1. Impact of dynamic co-evaporation schemes on the growth of methylammonium lead iodide absorbers for inverted solar cells

Abstract

Abstract A variety of different synthesis methods for the fabrication of solar cell absorbers based on the lead halide perovskite methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3, MAPI) have been successfully developed in the past. In this work, we elaborate upon vacuum-based dual source co-evaporation as an industrially attractive processing technology. We present non-stationary processing schemes and concentrate on details of co-evaporation schemes where we intentionally delay the start/end points of one of the two evaporated components (MAI and PbI2). Previously, it was found for solar cells based on a regular n-i-p structure, that the pre-evaporation of PbI $$_2$$ 2 is highly beneficial for absorber growth and solar cell performance. Here, we apply similar non-stationary processing schemes with pre/post-deposition sequences for the growth of MAPI absorbers in an inverted p-i-n solar cell architecture. Solar cell parameters as well as details of the absorber growth are compared for a set of different evaporation schemes. Contrary to our preliminary assumptions, we find the pre-evaporation of PbI2 to be detrimental in the inverted configuration, indicating that the beneficial effect of the seed layers originates from interface properties related to improved charge carrier transport and extraction across this interface rather than being related to an improved absorber growth. This is further evidenced by a performance improvement of inverted solar cell devices with pre-evaporated MAI and post-deposited PbI2 layers. Finally, we provide two hypothetical electronic models that might cause the observed effects.

Abstract

To determine if preoperative intravenous dextrose affects the incidence and ease of treatment of spinal-induced hypotension in parturients having elective Cesarean section under spinal anesthesia.In this prospective, double-blind study, following informed consent, 119 ASA I, II parturients for elective Cesarean section were randomized to receive intravenously either dextrose 5% in normal saline (Group D) or normal saline (Group NS) at 125 ml x hr(-1) for two hours prior to delivery. Following a bolus of 15 ml x kg(-1) normal saline iv, spinal anesthesia was induced with hyperbaric bupivacaine 0.75%, fentanyl and morphine. Hypotension (systolic blood pressure100 mm Hg or20% decrease) was treated with fluids and/or vasopressor.demographics, blood glucose concentrations (fasting, time of spinal, delivery), blood pressure (baseline, one minute intervals from spinal to delivery), neonatal Apgar scores, umbilical blood gas analyses, glucose and lactate concentrations.There was no difference between the two groups in the rate of hypotension (P = 0.272). All parturients who experienced hypotension received fluids, and there was also no difference between the groups in vasopressor requirement [mean dose of ephedrine: Group D = 21.6 mg (95% CI 15.1-28.2), Group NS = 16 mg (95% CI 12.0-20.5)].The routine administration of dextrose 5% at a rate of 5.22 g x hr(-1) preoperatively does not affect the hypotension rate, or make it easier to treat.

Abstract

Reliability of polymeric encapsulants is being assured using suitable additives. Especially UV absorbers and UV stabilizers are important to protect the encapsulants from solar radiation. Identifying the additives and their quantities is essential for quality control and lifetime predictions. In this work a new method for quantitative additive characterization by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (PY-GCMS) is presented. A general workflow for qualitative analysis and additive quantification is proposed which is based on solvent-free sample preparation. A series of polymer film samples has been prepared with different additive concentrations for method development and validation. Using the two-step thermo desorption extraction all admixed additives can be detected. Furthermore, it was shown that the desorption behavior of the UV protecting additives dissolved in n-hexane strongly differs from the desorption of additives bound inside the polymer matrix. Thus, the use of reference samples is required for calibration. Finally, using verification samples as well as one commercial polymer film, the determination of the mass fractions of the studied UV absorber and UV stabilizer was shown to be possible with high accuracy. While this work is focused on ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) as encapsulant for photovoltaic modules, the derived methodology is very likely directly transferable to other encapsulant and additive compositions.

Abstract

To report the management of labour analgesia and subsequent anaesthesia for postpartum bleeding in a 19-yr-old parturient with Noonan's syndrome.The patient presented in active labour at 36-wk gestation. She was known to have Noonan's syndrome and had been assessed regularly throughout pregnancy. Features of the syndrome exhibited by the patient included typical facies, chest skeletal abnormalities, pulmonary valve dysplasia, mental retardation and lymphoedema. In addition, she had Factor XI deficiency (0.46 mg.L-1) and thrombocytopenia (92 x 10(9).L-1), previously unreported in a parturient with this syndrome. Although epidural analgesia may have been considered the labour analgesic technique of choice, the risk of epidural haematoma caused by her bleeding diathesis made this unacceptable. This risk was balanced against the possibility of a potentially difficult intubation due to facial abnormalities, should emergency operative delivery become necessary. Labour analgesia was provided with intravenous patient controlled opioid analgesia (fentanyl 25 micrograms bolus, five minute lockout) despite her mental retardation. Dilatation and curettage required general anaesthesia after intubation with awake direct laryngoscopy using cautious sedation.Noonan's syndrome is characterised by multi-system involvement, requiring thorough preoperative assessment of cardiovascular, skeletal, haematological and central nervous systems. Clotting and platelet defects considerably restrict the possible analgesic and anaesthetic options for labouring patients with this syndrome.
