Search

(abridged) Expanding the sample of directly imaged companions to nearby, young stars that are amenable to detailed astrometric and spectroscopic studies is critical for the continued development and validation of theories of their evolution and atmospheric processes. The recent release of the {\it Gaia} astrometric catalogue allows us to efficiently search for these elusive companions by targeting those stars that exhibit the astrometric reflex motion induced by an orbiting companion. The nearby (27 pc), young (24 Myr) star AF Leporis (AF Lep) was targeted because of its astrometric acceleration, consistent with a wide-orbit planetary companion detectable with high-contrast imaging. We used the SPHERE instrument on the VLT to search for faint substellar companions in the immediate vicinity of AF Lep. We used observations of a nearby star interleaved with those of AF Lep to efficiently subtract the residual point spread function. This provided sensitivity to faint planetary-mass companions within 1 arcsec ($\sim$30 au) of the star. We detected the companion AF Lep b at a separation of 339 mas (9 au), within the inner edge of its unresolved debris disk. The measured $K$-band contrast and the age of the star yield a model-dependent mass of 4 and 6 $M_{\rm Jup}$, consistent with the mass derived from an orbital fit of $4.3_{-1.2}^{+2.9}$ $M_{\rm Jup}$. The near-infrared SED of the planet is consistent with an object at the L--T spectral type transition, but under-luminous with respect to field-gravity objects. AF Lep b joins a growing number of substellar companions imaged around stars in the young $\beta$ Pic moving group. With a mass of between 3 and 7 $M_{\rm Jup}$, it occupies a gap in this isochronal sequence between the hotter, more massive companions like PZ~Tel~B and $\beta$~Pic~b, and the cooler 51~Eri~b, which is sufficiently cool for methane to form within its photosphere., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures. We present a high-contrast imaging survey of intermediate-mass (1.75--4.5 $M_\odot$) stars to search for the most extreme stellar binaries, i.e., for the lowest mass stellar companions. Using adaptive optics at the Lick and Gemini observatories, we observed 169 stars and detected 24 candidates companions, 16 of which are newly discovered and all but three are likely or confirmed physical companions. Despite obtaining sensitivity down to the substellar limit for 75\% of our sample, we do not detect any companion below 0.3 $M_\odot$, strongly suggesting that the distribution of stellar companions is truncated at a mass ratio of $q_\mathrm{min} \gtrsim0.075$. Combining our results with known brown dwarf companions, we identify a low-mass companion desert to intermediate mass stars in the range $0.02\lesssim q \lesssim0.05$, which quantitatively matches the known brown dwarf desert among solar-type stars. We conclude that the formation mechanism for multiple systems operates in a largely scale-invariant manner and precludes the formation of extremely uneven systems, likely because the components of a proto-binary accrete most of their mass after the initial cloud fragmentation. Similarly, the mechanism to form "planetary" ($q \lesssim 0.02$) companions likely scales linearly with stellar mass, probably as a result of the correlation between the masses of stars and their protoplanetary disks. Finally, we predict the existence of a sizable population of brown dwarf companions to low-mass stars and of a rising population of planetary-mass objects towards $\approx 1\,M_\mathrm{Jup}$ around solar-type stars. A rich zoo of peculiar objects forms when Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars, undergo interactions in a binary system. For example, Barium (Ba) stars are main-sequence and red-giant stars that accreted mass from the outflows of a former AGB companion, which is now a dim white dwarf (WD). Their orbital properties can help us constrain AGB binary interaction mechanisms, and their chemical abundances are a tracer of the nucleosynthesis processes that took place inside the former AGB star. The observational constraints concerning the orbital and stellar properties of Ba stars have increased in the past years, but important uncertainties remained concerning their WD companions. In this contribution, we used HD76225 to demonstrate that by combining radial-velocity data with Hipparcos and Gaia astrometry, one can accurately constrain the orbital inclinations of these systems and obtain the absolute masses of these WDs, getting direct information about their AGB progenitors via initial-final mass relationships., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables. The four directly imaged planets orbiting the star HR 8799 are an ideal laboratory to probe atmospheric physics and formation models. We present more than a decade's worth of Keck/OSIRIS observations of these planets, which represent the most detailed look at their atmospheres to-date by its resolution and signal to noise ratio. We present the first direct detection of HR 8799 d, the second-closest known planet to the star, at moderate spectral resolution with Keck/OSIRIS (K-band; R~4,000). Additionally, we uniformly analyze new and archival OSIRIS data (H and K band) of HR 8799 b, c, and d. First, we show detections of water (H2O) and carbon monoxide (CO) in the three planets and discuss the ambiguous case of methane (CH4) in the atmosphere of HR 8799b. Then, we report radial velocity (RV) measurements for each of the three planets. The RV measurement of HR 8799 d is consistent with predictions made assuming coplanarity and orbital stability of the HR 8799 planetary system. Finally, we perform a uniform atmospheric analysis on the OSIRIS data, published photometric points, and low resolution spectra. We do not infer any significant deviation from to the stellar value of the carbon to oxygen ratio (C/O) of the three planets, which therefore does not yet yield definitive information about the location or method of formation. Scattered light imaging studies have detected nearly two dozen spiral arm systems in circumstellar disks, yet the formation mechanisms for most of them are still under debate. Although existing studies can use motion measurements to distinguish leading mechanisms such as planet-disk interaction and disk self-gravity, close-in stellar flybys can induce short-lived spirals and even excite arm-driving planets into highly eccentric orbits. With unprecedented stellar location and proper motion measurements from Gaia DR3, here we study for known spiral arm systems their flyby history with their stellar neighbours by formulating an analytical on-sky flyby framework. For stellar neighbors currently located within 10 pc from the spiral hosts, we restrict the flyby time to be within the past $10^4$ yr and the flyby distance to be within $10$ times the disk extent in scattered light. Among a total of $12570$ neighbors that are identified in Gaia DR3 for $20$ spiral systems, we do not identify credible flyby candidates for isolated systems. Our analysis suggests that close-in recent flyby is not the dominant formation mechanism for isolated spiral systems in scattered light., 14 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, ApJS accepted. The atmospheres of gas giant planets are thought to be inhomogeneous due to weather and patchy clouds. We present two full nights of coronagraphic observations of the HR 8799 planets using the CHARIS integral field spectrograph behind the SCExAO adaptive optics system on the Subaru Telescope to search for spectrophomometric variability. We did not detect significant variability signals, but placed the lowest variability upper limits for HR 8799 c and d. Based on injection-recovery tests, we expected to have a 50% chance to detect signals down to 10% H-band photometric variability for HR 8799 c and down to 30% H-band variability for HR 8799 d. We also investigated spectral variability and expected a 50% chance to recovery 20% variability in the H/K flux ratio for HR 8799 c. We combined all the data from the two nights to obtain some of the most precise spectra obtained for HR 8799 c, d, and e. Using a grid of cloudy radiative-convective-thermochemical equilibrium models, we found all three planets prefer supersolar metallicity with effective temperatures of ~1100 K. However, our high signal-to-noise spectra show that HR 8799 d has a distinct spectrum from HR 8799 c, possibly preferring more vertically extended and uniform clouds and indicating that the planets are not identical., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, Accepted to AJ, time series photometry and stacked spectra available as text files

The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is a dedicated high-contrast imaging facility designed for the direct detection and characterization of young Jupiter mass exoplanets. After six yrs of operation at Gemini South, GPI has helped establish that Jovian planets are rare at wide separations, but have higher occurrence rates at small separations. This motivates an upgrade of GPI to achieve deeper contrasts, especially at small inner working angles, while leveraging its current capabilities. GPI has been funded to undergo a major science-driven upgrade as part of a relocation to Gemini North (GN). Gemini plans to remove GPI at the end of 2020A. We present the status of the proposed upgrades to GPI including a EMCCD-based pyramid wavefront sensor, broadband low spectral resolution prisms and new apodized-pupil Lyot coronagraph designs. During its move from the mountaintop of Cerro Pachon in Chile to the peak of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the Gemini Planet Imager will receive various upgrades, including a pyramid wavefront sensor. As a non-linear sensor, a standard approach to linearize the response of the pyramid is induce a rapid circular modulation of the beam around the pyramid tip, trading off sensitivity for robustness during high turbulence. Using high temporal resolution Fourier Optics based simulations, we investigate phase reconstruction approaches that attempt to optimize the performance of the sensor with a dynamically adjustable modulation parameter. We have studied the linearity and gain stability of the sensor under different modulation and seeing conditions, and the ability of the sensor to correct non-common-path errors. The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is a high-contrast imaging instrument designed to directly image and characterize exoplanets. GPI is currently undergoing several upgrades to improve performance. In this paper, we discuss the upgrades to the GPI IFS. This primarily focuses on the design and performance improvements of new prisms and filters. This includes an improved high-resolution prism which will provide more evenly dispersed spectra across y, J, H and K-bands. Additionally, we discuss the design and implementation of a new low-resolution mode and prism which allow for imaging of all four bands (y, J, H and K-bands) simultaneously at R≈10. We explore the possibility of using a multiband filter which would block the light between the four spectral bands. We discuss possible performance improvements from the multiband filter, if implemented. The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is a high-contrast adaptive optics instrument designed to detect and characterize substellar companions and circumstellar debris disks around nearby young stars using infrared integral field spectroscopy and polarimetry. GPI has been in routine operations at Gemini South for the past six years. Because precise astrometry and photometry of exoplanets is critical to GPI's science, we undertook extensive efforts both in-lab and on-sky to refine the astrometric and photometric calibration of the instrument. We describe revisions to the GPI Data Reduction Pipeline (DRP) that account for these revised calibrations, and that fix several issues identified over the previous six years, including some subtle issues affecting astrometric calibrations caused by a drift of the instrument’s clock. These calibrations are critical for the interpretation of observations obtained with GPI, and for a comparison with measurements from other high-contrast imaging instruments.

HR4796A hosts a well-studied debris disk with a long history due to its high fractional luminosity and favorable inclination lending itself well to both unresolved and resolved observations. We present new J- and K1-band images of the resolved debris disk HR4796A taken in the polarimetric mode of the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI). The polarized intensity features a strongly forward scattered brightness distribution and is undetected at the far side of the disk. The total intensity is detected at all scattering angles and also exhibits a strong forward scattering peak. We use a forward modelled geometric disk in order to extract geometric parameters, polarized fraction and total intensity scattering phase functions for these data as well as H-band data previously taken by GPI. We find the polarized phase function becomes increasingly more forward scattering as wavelength increases. We fit Mie and distribution of hollow spheres grain (DHS) models to the extracted functions. We find that while it is possible to describe generate a satisfactory model for the total intensity using a DHS model, but not with a Mie model. We find that no single grain population of DHS or Mie grains of arbitrary composition can simultaneously reproduce the polarized fraction and total intensity scattering phase functions, indicating the need for more sophisticated grain models., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. 3 tables, 11 figures

We have obtained Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) J-, H-, K1-, and K2-Spec observations of the iconic debris ring around the young, main-sequence star HR 4796A. We applied several point-spread function (PSF) subtraction techniques to the observations (Mask-and-Interpolate, RDI-NMF, RDI-KLIP, and ADI-KLIP) to measure the geometric parameters and the scattering phase function for the disk. To understand the systematic errors associated with PSF subtraction, we also forward-modeled the observations using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo framework and a simple model for the disk. We found that measurements of the disk geometric parameters were robust, with all of our analyses yielding consistent results; however, measurements of the scattering phase function were challenging to reconstruct from PSF-subtracted images, despite extensive testing. As a result, we estimated the scattering phase function using disk modeling. We searched for a dependence of the scattering phase function with respect to the GPI filters but found none. We compared the H-band scattering phase function with that measured by Hubble Space Telescope STIS at visual wavelengths and discovered a blue color at small scattering angles and a red color at large scattering angles, consistent with predictions and laboratory measurements of large grains. We present new $H$-band scattered light images of the HD 32297 edge-on debris disk obtained with the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI). The disk is detected in total and polarized intensity down to a projected angular separation of 0.15", or 20au. On the other hand, the large scale swept-back halo remains undetected, likely a consequence of its markedly blue color relative to the parent body belt. We analyze the curvature of the disk spine and estimate a radius of $\approx$100au for the parent body belt, smaller than past scattered light studies but consistent with thermal emission maps of the system. We employ three different flux-preserving post-processing methods to suppress the residual starlight and evaluate the surface brightness and polarization profile along the disk spine. Unlike past studies of the system, our high fidelity images reveal the disk to be highly symmetric and devoid of morphological and surface brightness perturbations. We find the dust scattering properties of the system to be consistent with those observed in other debris disks, with the exception of HR 4796. We report the results of a ${\sim}4$-year direct imaging survey of 104 stars to resolve and characterize circumstellar debris disks in scattered light as part of the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey. We targeted nearby (${\lesssim}150$ pc), young (${\lesssim}500$ Myr) stars with high infrared excesses ($L_{\mathrm{IR}} / L_\star > 10^{-5}$), including 38 with previously resolved disks. Observations were made using the Gemini Planet Imager high-contrast integral field spectrograph in $H$-band (1.6 $��$m) coronagraphic polarimetry mode to measure both polarized and total intensities. We resolved 26 debris disks and three protoplanetary/transitional disks. Seven debris disks were resolved in scattered light for the first time, including newly presented HD 117214 and HD 156623, and we quantified basic morphologies of five of them using radiative transfer models. All of our detected debris disks but HD 156623 have dust-poor inner holes, and their scattered-light radii are generally larger than corresponding radii measured from resolved thermal emission and those inferred from spectral energy distributions. To assess sensitivity, we report contrasts and consider causes of non-detections. Detections were strongly correlated with high IR excess and high inclination, although polarimetry outperformed total intensity angular differential imaging for detecting low inclination disks (${\lesssim} 70 ��$). Based on post-survey statistics, we improved upon our pre-survey target prioritization metric predicting polarimetric disk detectability. We also examined scattered-light disks in the contexts of gas, far-IR, and millimeter detections. Comparing $H$-band and ALMA fluxes for two disks revealed tentative evidence for differing grain properties. We present a study of the HD 165054 astrometric calibration field that has been periodically observed with the Gemini Planet Imager. HD 165054 is a bright star within Baade's Window, a region of the galactic plane with relatively low extinction from interstellar dust. HD 165054 was selected as a calibrator target due to the high number density of stars within this region ($\sim 3$ stars per square arcsecond with $H, 25 pages, 12 figures

orbitize! is an open-source, object-oriented software package for fitting the orbits of directly-imaged objects. It packages the Orbits for the Impatient (OFTI) algorithm and a parallel-tempered Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm into a consistent and intuitive Python API. orbitize! makes it easy to run standard astrometric orbit fits; in less than 10 lines of code, users can read in data, perform one fit using OFTI and another using MCMC, and make two publication-ready figures. Extensive pedagogical tutorials, intended to be navigable by both orbit-fitting novices and seasoned experts, are available on our documentation page. We have designed the orbitize! API to be flexible and easy to use/modify for unique cases. orbitize! was designed by members of the exoplanet imaging community to be a central repository for algorithms, techniques, and know-how developed by this community. We intend for it to continue to expand and change as the field progresses and new techniques are developed, and call for community involvement in this process. We present κ Andromeda b's photometry and astrometry taken with Subaru/SCExAO+HiCIAO and Keck/NIRC2, combined with recently published SCExAO/CHARIS low-resolution spectroscopy and published thermal infrared photometry to further constrain the companion's atmospheric properties and orbit. The Y/Y−K colors of κ And b are redder than field dwarfs, consistent with its youth and lower gravity. Empirical comparisons of its Y-band photometry and CHARIS spectrum to a large spectral library of isolated field dwarfs reaffirm the conclusion from Currie et al. that it likely has a low gravity but admit a wider range of most plausible spectral types (L0–L2). Our gravitational classification also suggests that the best-fit objects for κ And b may have lower gravity than those previously reported. Atmospheric models lacking dust/clouds fail to reproduce its entire 1–4.7 μm spectral energy distribution (SED), and cloudy atmosphere models with temperatures of ~1700–2000 K better match κ And b data. Most well-fitting model comparisons favor 1700–1900 K, a surface gravity of log(g) ~ 4–4.5, and a radius of 1.3–1.6 R_(Jup); the best-fit model (DRIFT-PHOENIX) yields the coolest and lowest-gravity values: T_(eff) = 1700 K and log g = 4.0. An update to κ And b's orbit with ExoSOFT using new astrometry spanning 7 yr reaffirms its high eccentricity (0.77 ± 0.08). We consider a scenario where unseen companions are responsible for scattering κ And b to a wide separation and high eccentricity. If three planets, including κ And b, were born with coplanar orbits, and one of them was ejected by gravitational scattering, a potential inner companion with mass ≳10 M_(Jup) could be located at ≾25 au.

We present a revision to the astrometric calibration of the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), an instrument designed to achieve the high contrast at small angular separations necessary to image substellar and planetary-mass companions around nearby, young stars. We identified several issues with the GPI Data Reduction Pipeline (DRP) that significantly affected the determination of angle of north in reduced GPI images. As well as introducing a small error in position angle measurements for targets observed at small zenith distances, this error led to a significant error in the previous astrometric calibration that has affected all subsequent astrometric measurements. We present a detailed description of these issues, and how they were corrected. We reduced GPI observations of calibration binaries taken periodically since the instrument was commissioned in 2014 using an updated version of the DRP. These measurements were compared to observations obtained with the NIRC2 instrument on Keck II, an instrument with an excellent astrometric calibration, allowing us to derive an updated plate scale and north offset angle for GPI. We present $L$'-band imaging of the PDS 70 planetary system with Keck/NIRC2 using the new infrared pyramid wavefront sensor. We detected both PDS 70 b and c in our images, as well as the front rim of the circumstellar disk. After subtracting off a model of the disk, we measured the astrometry and photometry of both planets. Placing priors based on the dynamics of the system, we estimated PDS 70 b to have a semi-major axis of $20^{+3}_{-4}$~au and PDS 70 c to have a semi-major axis of $34^{+12}_{-6}$~au (95\% credible interval). We fit the spectral energy distribution (SED) of both planets. For PDS 70 b, we were able to place better constraints on the red half of its SED than previous studies and inferred the radius of the photosphere to be 2-3~$R_{Jup}$. The SED of PDS 70 c is less well constrained, with a range of total luminosities spanning an order of magnitude. With our inferred radii and luminosities, we used evolutionary models of accreting protoplanets to derive a mass of PDS 70 b between 2 and 4 $M_{\textrm{Jup}}$ and a mean mass accretion rate between $3 \times 10^{-7}$ and $8 \times 10^{-7}~M_{\textrm{Jup}}/\textrm{yr}$. For PDS 70 c, we computed a mass between 1 and 3 $M_{\textrm{Jup}}$ and mean mass accretion rate between $1 \times 10^{-7}$ and $5 \times~10^{-7} M_{\textrm{Jup}}/\textrm{yr}$. We present a revision to the visual orbit of the young, directly-imaged exoplanet 51 Eridani b using four years of observations with the Gemini Planet Imager. The relative astrometry is consistent with an eccentric ($e=0.53_{-0.13}^{+0.09}$) orbit at an intermediate inclination ($i=136_{-11}^{+10}$\,deg), although circular orbits cannot be excluded due to the complex shape of the multidimensional posterior distribution. We find a semi-major axis of $11.1_{-1.3}^{+4.2}$\,au and a period of $28.1_{-4.9}^{+17.2}$\,yr, assuming a mass of 1.75\,M$_{\odot}$ for the host star. We find consistent values with a recent analysis of VLT/SPHERE data covering a similar baseline. We investigated the potential of using absolute astrometry of the host star to obtain a dynamical mass constraint for the planet. The astrometric acceleration of 51~Eri derived from a comparison of the {\it Hipparcos} and {\it Gaia} catalogues was found to be inconsistent at the 2--3$\sigma$ level with the predicted reflex motion induced by the orbiting planet. Potential sources of this inconsistency include a combination of random and systematic errors between the two astrometric catalogs or the signature of an additional companion within the system interior to current detection limits. We also explored the potential of using {\it Gaia} astrometry alone for a dynamical mass measurement of the planet by simulating {\it Gaia} measurements of the motion of the photocenter of the system over the course of the extended eight-year mission. We find that such a measurement is only possible ($>98$\% probability) given the most optimistic predictions for the {\it Gaia} scan astrometric uncertainties for bright stars, and a high mass for the planet ($\gtrsim3.6$\,M$_{\rm Jup}$)., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. We present constraints on the presence of substellar companions to the nearby ($d\sim7.6$ pc), young ($440\pm40$ Myr) K4Ve star TW Piscis Austrini, the wide ($\sim$0.3 pc) companion to the A4V star Fomalhaut. We combined absolute astrometry from Hipparcos and Gaia with literature radial velocity measurements and dedicated high-contrast imaging observations obtained with Keck/NIRC2 to achieve sensitivity to brown dwarf and planetary-mass companions ($\gtrsim2$ M$_{\rm Jup}$) over many decades of orbital period ($\lesssim 10^3$ yr). The significant astrometric acceleration measured between the Hipparcos and Gaia catalogues, reported previously in the literature, cannot be explained by the orbital motion of TW PsA around the barycenter of the Fomalhaut triple system. Instead, we find that it is consistent with the reflex motion induced by an orbiting substellar companion. The combination of astrometry, radial velocities, and a deep $L^{\prime}$ imaging dataset leads to a constraint on the companion mass of $1.2_{-0.6}^{+0.7}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$. However, the period of the companion is poorly constrained, with a highly multi-modal period posterior distribution due to aliasing with the 24.25 year baseline between Hipparcos and Gaia. We conducted a 12-month monitoring campaign of 33 T Tauri stars (TTS) in Taurus. Our goal was to monitor objects that possess a disk but have a weak Halpha line, a common accretion tracer for young stars, to determine whether they host a passive circumstellar disk. We used medium-resolution optical spectroscopy to assess the objects' accretion status and to measure the Halpha line. We found no convincing example of passive disks; only transition disk and debris disk systems in our sample are non-accreting. Among accretors, we find no example of flickering accretion, leading to an upper limit of 2.2% on the duty cycle of accretion gaps assuming that all accreting TTS experience such events. Combining literature results with our observations, we find that the reliability of traditional Halpha-based criteria to test for accretion is high but imperfect, particularly for low-mass TTS. We find a significant correlation between stellar mass and the full width at 10 per cent of the peak (W10%) of the Halpha line that does not seem to be related to variations in free-fall velocity. Finally, our data reveal a positive correlation between the Halpha equivalent width and its W10%, indicative of a systematic modulation in the line profile whereby the high-velocity wings of the line are proportionally more enhanced than its core when the line luminosity increases. High-contrast medium resolution spectroscopy has been used to detect molecules such as water and carbon monoxide in the atmospheres of gas giant exoplanets. In this work, we show how it can be used to derive radial velocity (RV) measurements of directly imaged exoplanets. Improving upon the traditional cross-correlation technique, we develop a new likelihood based on joint forward modelling of the planetary signal and the starlight background (i.e., speckles). After marginalizing over the starlight model, we infer the barycentric RV of HR 8799 b and c in 2010 yielding -9.2 +- 0.5 km/s and -11.6 +- 0.5 km/s respectively. These RV measurements help to constrain the 3D orientation of the orbit of the planet by resolving the degeneracy in the longitude of ascending node.
