Because of the increased insight into the biological role of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) under physiological and pathological conditions and the role it presumably plays in the action of natural and synthetic redox-active drugs, there is a need to accurately define the type and magnitude of reactions that may occur with this intriguing and key species of redoxome. Historically, and frequently incorrectly, the impact of catalase-like activity has been assigned to play a major role in the action of many redox-active drugs, mostly SOD mimics and peroxynitrite scavengers, and in particular MnTBAP3– and Mn salen derivatives. The advantage of one redox-active compound over another has often been assigned to the differences in catalase-like activity. Our studies provide substantial evidence that Mn(III) N-alkylpyridylporphyrins couple with H2O2 in actions other than catalase-related. Herein we have assessed the catalase-like activities of different classes of compounds: Mn porphyrins (MnPs), Fe porphyrins (FePs), Mn(III) salen (EUK-8), and Mn(II) cyclic polyamines (SOD-active M40403 and SOD-inactive M40404). Nitroxide (tempol), nitrone (NXY-059), ebselen, and MnCl2, which have not been reported as catalase mimics, were used as negative controls, while catalase enzyme was a positive control. The dismutation of H2O2 to O2 and H2O was followed via measuring oxygen evolved with a Clark oxygen electrode at 25 °C. The catalase enzyme was found to have kcat(H2O2)=1.5×106 M–1 s–1. The yield of dismutation, i.e., the maximal amount of O2 evolved, was assessed also. The magnitude of the yield reflects an interplay between the kcat(H2O2) and the stability of compounds toward H2O2-driven oxidative degradation, and is thus an accurate measure of the efficacy of a catalyst. The kcat(H2O2) values for 12 cationic Mn(III) N-substituted (alkyl and alkoxyalkyl) pyridylporphyrin-based SOD mimics and Mn(III) N, N′-dialkylimidazolium porphyrin, MnTDE-2-ImP5+, ranged from 23 to 88 M–1 s–1. The analogous Fe(III) N-alkylpyridylporphyrins showed ~10-fold higher activity than the corresponding MnPs, but the values of kcat(H2O2) are still ~4 orders of magnitude lower than that of the enzyme. While the kcat(H2O2) values for Fe ethyl and n-octyl analogs were 803.5 and 368.4 M–1 s–1, respectively, the FePs are more prone to H2O2- driven oxidative degradation, therefore allowing for similar yields in H2O2 dismutation as analogous MnPs. The kcat(H2O2) values are dependent on the electron deficiency of the metal site as it controls the peroxide binding in the first step of the dismutation process. SOD-like activities depend on electron deficiency of the metal site also, as it controls the first step of View the MathML source dismutation. In turn, the kcat(View the MathML source) parallels the kcat(H2O2). Therefore, the electron-rich anionic non-SOD mimic MnTBAP3– has essentially very low catalase-like activity, kcat(H2O2)=5.8 M–1 s–1. The catalase-like activities of Mn(III) and Fe(III) porphyrins are at most, 0.0004 and 0.05% of the enzyme activity, respectively. The kcat(H2O2) values of 8.2 and 6.5 M–1 s–1 were determined for electron-rich Mn(II) cyclic polyamine-based compounds, M40403 and M40404, respectively. The EUK-8, with modest SOD-like activity, has only slightly higher kcat(H2O2)=13.5 M–1 s–1. The biological relevance of kcat(H2O2) of MnTE-2-PyP5+, MnTDE- 2-ImP5+, MnTBAP3–, FeTE-2-PyP5+, M40403, M40404, and Mn salen was evaluated in wild-type and peroxidase/catalase-deficient E. coli.

Stability of bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) in an electric field in the presence of Co-porphyrin in the solution surrounding BLM is investigated. We have shown that the presence of porphyrin in a solution reduces line tension of the pore edge and surface tension of BLM and increases the number of pores on the BLM. It is also shown that a decrease in the stability of BLM in the electric field in the presence of the porphyrin is a result of the reduction of line tension of the pore edge and increase in the number of pores.

Porphyrins have a unique aromatic structure determining particular photochemical properties that make them promising photosensitizers for anticancer therapy. Previously, we synthesized a set of artificial porphyrins by modifying side-chain functional groups and introducing different metals into the core structure. Here, we have performed a comparative study of the binding properties of 29 cationic porphyrins with plasma proteins by using microarray and spectroscopic approaches. The porphyrins were noncovalently immobilized onto hydrogel-covered glass slides and probed to bio-conjugated human and bovine serum albumins, as well as to human hemoglobin. The signal detection was carried out at the near-infrared fluorescence wavelength (800 nm) that enabled the effect of intrinsic visible wavelength fluorescence emitted by the porphyrins tested to be discarded. Competition assays on porphyrin microarrays indicated that long-chain fatty acids (FAs) (palmitic and stearic acids) decrease porphyrin binding to both serum albumin and hemoglobin. The binding affinity of different types of cationic porphyrins for plasma proteins was quantitatively assessed in the absence and presence of FAs by fluorescent and absorption spectroscopy. Molecular docking analysis confirmed results that new porphyrins and long-chain FAs compete for the common binding site FA1 in human serum albumin and meso-substituted functional groups in porphyrins play major role in the modulation of conformational rearrangements of the protein.

Tetrapyrrolic compounds such as porphyrins are known to be prospective chemotherapeutics and photosensitizers for cancer treatment and diagnosis. In this work, water-soluble, meso-substituted cationic pyridyl-porphyrins and their metallocomplexes bearing various central metal atoms ( Ag , Zn , Co , and Fe ) in the porphine ring and various functional groups (allyl, oxyethyl, butyl, and methallyl) at the nitrogen atom in the pyridine ring were synthesized and characterized by1H and13C NMR and UV-visible spectroscopy. Cytotoxic and photodynamic activities of new porphyrins and their metal derivatives were investigated in vitro (KCL-22 cancer cell line of human chronic myeloid leukemia). The cytotoxicity of porphyrins was shown to be dependent on the presence and type of the central metal atom in the porphine ring. Ag -derivatives were more cytotoxic than Co −, Zn −, and Fe − metallocomplexes. The porphyrins bearing allyl-functional groups were evidenced to be more cytotoxic than those which included butyl-, oxyethyl-, and methallyl-groups. The change of nitrogen position in the pyridine ring of Ag -metalloporphyrins from 3(3-N-pyridylporphyrins) to 4(4-N-pyridylporphyrins) induced an increase in the cytotoxic activity of metallocomplexes. All synthesized Ag-metalloporphyrins, except, the oxyethyl-containing one were more cytotoxic than cisplatin. Allyl containing free porphyrin and its Zn -metallocomplex had higher phototoxicity than Ag −, Co −, and Fe -metalloporphyrins. The results obtained can be useful for further investigation of new porphyrins as potential chemotherapeutics and photosensitizers.

Porphyrins and porphyrin derivatives have an outstanding potential for discovery of novel pharmacological agents due to their ability for numerous chemical modifications and a variety of mechanisms of biological effects. New water-soluble Ag and Zn derivatives of tetrachloride meso-tetra (4- N-oxiethylpyridyl) porphyne were synthesized. Cyto- and genotoxicity of these substances were tested in vitro by the vital dye (trypan blue) exclusion and the micronucleus tests, respectively. Both metalloporphyrins were shown to be cytotoxic for Cos-7 (fibroblast-like African green monkey kidney cells transformed by simian virus 40 [SV40]), DU 145 (epithelial-like cells of human prostate carcinoma), and K-562 (human chronic myeloid leukemia cells) cell lines. At the same time they did not cause chromosome fragmentation in K-562 cell line at as high concentrations as IC50 (20 μmol/L for Ag and 70 μmol/L for Zn derivative). Thus, the metalloporphyrins tested meet at least two important demands to potential anticancer drugs as they combine the cytotoxicity with low genotoxicity. The three in vitro tumor models used are relevant to further in vitro and in vivo pre-clinical investigation of the studied metalloporphyrins as potential chemotherapeutics.

Bovine serum albumin complexes with water-soluble cationic porphyrins, Cu - and Co-meso-tetra(4- N -hydroxyethylpyridyl)porphyrins ( CuT4OEPyP , CoT4OEPyP ), and their 3- N -analogs, meso-tetra(3- N -hydroxyethylpyridyl)porphyrins ( CuT3OEPyP , CoT3OEPyP ), have been investigated. The porphyrin-bovine serum albumin binding was monitored by the absorption in the visible region at 400-460 nm. The stoichiometry of binding and the binding constants of the porphyrins to bovine serum albumin were determined using binding isotherms and Scatchard plots. The K b values obtained for these porphyrin- bovine serum albumin complexes are 1.7 × 105 M −1, 3.2 × 105 M −1, 1.4 × 105 M −1 and 3 × 105 M −1 respectively. Binding constants are sensitive to pH and ionic strength of the solution.

The binding of nanoparticles zeolite with a number of cationic porphyrins are studied. Previously, it was established that the main mechanism of binding the zeolite nanoparticles with cationic porphyrins is an ionic bond. Since binding of porphyrins as ligands to nanoparticles at the initial stage of interaction is determined by the Brownian motion of porphyrins, it is obvious that the interaction of porphyrins with nanoparticles may depend on the temperature. In the present paper by methods of absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy was studied the complexation of porphyrins with zeolite nanoparticles at different temperature conditions. It was established that there is a clear temperature dependence of the complexation of cationic metalloporphyrins with zeolite naonoparticles, and for correct determination of the percentage of binding must be strict thermostating of the experimental conditions.

We employed UV light absorption and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopic measurements to study the binding of novel water-soluble porphyrins meso-tetra-(4N-allylpyridyl)porphyrin [TAlPyP4], and its Ag containing derivative to the poly(rA)poly(rU) and poly(rI)poly(rC) RNA duplexes. Our results suggest that TAlPyP4 associate with the duplexes via intercalation, whereas the conservative CD spectra indicates that AgTAlPyP4 preferably binds via outside self-stacking mode. We used our determined binding isotherms for each ligand-RNA binding event to calculate the binding constant, Kb, and binding free energy, DeltaGb = -RTlnKb. By performing these experiments as a function of temperature, we evaluated the van't Hoff binding enthalpies, DeltaH. The binding entropies, DeltaSb, were calculated as DeltaSb = (DeltaHb - DeltaGb)/T. We interpret our data in terms of specific interactions that stabilize/destabilize each ligand-RNA complex studied in this work. Taken together, our data provide important new information about the thermodynamics of interactions of porphyrins with nucleic acids.

The low-temperature interaction of NO(15NO ) with sublimed layers of meso-mono-4-pyridyl-tri-phenyl- and meso-mono-3-pyridyl-tri-phenyl-porphyrinatocobalt(II) ( CoM4PyTPP (I) and CoM3PyTPP (II), respectively) has been investigated by means of FTIR and UV-visible spectroscopy. In addition to the stable five-coordinate nitrosyl complexes that are similar to the closely-related meso-tetraphenylporphyrinatocobalt(II)-nitrosyl Co(TPP)(NO) complex, a new type of complex with coordinated NO (15 NO ) has been found for the layers that were maintained at room temperature overnight before addition of nitric oxide at low temperature. The ν{ NO (15 NO )} in this species are more than 20 cm−1 lower than in five-coordinate compounds. These adducts are assigned to six-coordinate nitrosyl complexes, in which the fifth coordination site is occupied by the pyridyl group of the adjacent I (II) molecules. Warming the layers containing six-coordinate nitrosyl complexes of I almost completely transforms them to stable five-coordinate nitrosyl species indicating oligomers' disruption rather than loss of nitric oxide. In the case of II, however, a noticeable fraction of the six-coordinate species is left upon warming. Introducing new portions of NO to these layers at low temperature leads to formation of additional quantities of the six-coordinate species. Hence, part of six-coordinate complexes in II decomposed upon warming by releasing NO instead of by breaking Co -pyridyl bonds, therefore leaving free the sixth coordination sites in these layers. This result suggests a good possibility for creating solid state NO storage devices in which nitrogen monoxide can be kept and easily released by warming of the system.

Photodynamic inactivation of some microorganisms ( St. aureus, E.coli ) was investigated and their dependence on photo-physical properties of photosensitizers (PS) (cationic porphyrins and metalloporphyrins) was shown. One of the most important criteria for the effectiveness of the PS`s is the quantum yield of singlet oxygen (γ Δ ). Our investigations were shown that γ Δ of metalloporphyrins, containing Zn, significantly higher than of metal-free porphyrins (85-97% and 77-79%, respectively). Previousl y experimentally we were found that under the action cationic porphyrins and metalloporphyrins on Gram (+) and Gram (-) microorganisms efficiency of metalloporphyrins Zn-TOEt4PyP and Zn-TBut4PyP in 3-5 times was higher than the metal-free porphyrins. In this study under the action of porphyrins and their Zn-derivatives on microorganism St. aureus such an effect was confirmed. Using the LED with a peak emission of 405 nm and a power density of 70 mW/cm 2 , and irradiation time of microorganisms from 5 to 30 minutes we have found, that at a concentration of 0.1 ug/ml the highest efficiency is observed of metalloporphyrin Zn-TBut3PyP. Upon irradiation of 10 and 15 min his efficiency is 3-5 times higher than the metal-free porphyrin TOEt4PyP, and irradiation for 30 min via Zn-TBut3PyP is practically completely kills microorganisms. These data correlate with the quantum yield of singlet oxygen for photosensitizers. The 30 mindirect sun exposure (power density of 70 mW/cm 2 ) of photosensitizer solutions showed that a significant photobleaching of porphyrins and metalloporphyrins does not occur. Thus, Zn-containing cationic metalloporphyrins are highly efficient photosensitizers for photodynamic inactivation of microorganisms and PDT.

In the present study we have synthesized a novel amphiphilic porphyrin and its Ag(II) complex through modification of water-soluble porphyrinic structure in order to increase its lipophilicity and in turn pharmacological potency. New cationic non-symmetrical meso-substituted porphyrins were characterized by UV-visible, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), (1)H NMR techniques, lipophilicity (thin-layer chromatographic retention factor, Rf), and elemental analysis. The key toxicological profile (i.e. cytotoxicity and cell line- (cancer type-) specificity; genotoxicity; cell cycle effects) of amphiphilic Ag porphyrin was studied in human normal and cancer cell lines of various tissue origins and compared with its water-soluble analog. Structural modification of the molecule from water-soluble to amphiphilic resulted in a certain increase in the cytotoxicity and a decrease in cell line-specificity. Importantly, Ag(II) porphyrin showed less toxicity to normal cells and greater toxicity to their cancerous counterparts as compared to cisplatin. The amphiphilic complex was also not genotoxic and demonstrated a slight cytostatic effect via the cell cycle delay due to the prolongation of S-phase. As expected, the performed structural modification affected also the photocytotoxic activity of metal-free amphiphilic porphyrin. The ligand tested on cancer cell line revealed a dramatic (more than 70-fold) amplification of its phototoxic activity as compared to its water-soluble tetracationic metal-free analog. The compound combines low dark cytotoxicity with 5 fold stronger phototoxicity relative to Chlorin e6 and could be considered as a potential photosensitizer for further development in photodynamic therapy.

It is known that nanoparticles of colloidal silver and zeolites due to the porosity have an extremely large specific surface, which is an order of magnitude increases their sorption capacity. Previously we synthesized a set of water-soluble cationic porphyrins and metalloporphyrins and in the laboratory in vitro had shown their high effectiveness against the various cancer cell lines, and against a variety of microorganisms. The aim of this work was to study of processes sorption/desorption of porphyrins on nanoparticles of silver and zeolites. The interaction of cationic porphyrins with silver nanoparticles of 20 nm diameter was studied in the visible spectrum, in the range 350-800 nm. Investigation of sorption dynamics of porphyrins in the silver nanoparticles using two porphyrins: a) meso-tetra (4-N-butyl pyridyl) porphyrin (TBut4PyP), b) Ag-TBut4PyP, as well as of photosensitizer Al-phthalocyanine was carried out. Analysis of the dynamics of change in the absorption spectra for porphyrins TBut4PyP, Ag-TBut4PyP, Zn-TBut4PyP and Zn-TOEt4PyP by adding of nanoparticles of colloidal silver and zeolites leads to the conclusions: 1. nanoparticles of colloidal silver and zeolites are promising adsorbents for cationic porphyrins (sorption of 55-60% and 90-95%, respectively); 2. sorbents stable long (at least 24 hours) keeps the cationic porphyrins; 3. on nanoparticles of colloidal silver and zeolites an anionic and neutral porphyrins not be adsorbed or adsorbed bad.

Antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation has been successfully used against Gram (+) microorganisms, but most of the photosensitizers (PSs) on Gram (-) bacteria acts weakly. PSs are the natural or synthetic origin dyes, mainly porphyrins. We have synthesized more than 100 new cationic porphyrins and metalloporphyrins with different functional groups (hydroxyethyl, butyl, allyl, methallyl) and metals (cobalt, iron, copper, zinc, silver and other); from the nettle have also been purified pheophytin (a+b) and pheophytin (a) and have synthesized their Ag-and Zn-metalloporphyrins. It was found that in the dark (cytotoxic) mode, the most highly efficiency against microorganisms showed Agmetalloporphyrins of both types of porphyrins (synthetic and natural). Metalloporphyrin of natural origin Ag-pheophytin (a + b) is a strong antibacterial agent and causes 100% death as the Gram (+) microorganisms (St. aureus and MRSA) and the Gram (-) microorganisms (E.coli and Salmonella). It is established that for the destruction of Gram (+) and Gram (-) microorganisms in photodynamic mode cationic water-soluble synthetic metalloporphyrins, especially Zn-TBut4PyP, many times more effective than pheophytins. In vivo conditions on mice established that the best therapeutic activity against various strains of the microorganism St. aureus has the synthetic metalloporphyrin Ag-TBut4PyP. It is significantly more efficient than known drug "Chlorophyllipt" (2.5-3 times) and leads the survival rate of animals up to 50-60%.

Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) of microorganisms is successfully applied against Gram (+) microorganisms. However the majority of photosensitizers poorly affect on Gram (-) microorganisms. At present number of works have shown that cationic photosensitizers are able to induce photoinactivation both Gram (+) and Gram (-) microorganisms. The purpose of this work was definition of more effective new cationic pyridylporphyrins with various coordinated metals and functional groups for destruction of Gram (-) microorganisms. The efficiency of new cationic porphyrins and metalloporphyrins (9 compounds) was tested against Gram (-) microorganism E. coli (strain Κ-12). The testing results show high efficiency of metalloporphyrins, especially silver complexes, against E. coli microorganism under dark conditions. 50 % and 100 % cell growth inhibitory concentrations (IC50 and IC100 values, accordingly) of studied metallocomplexes are considerably lower in comparison with metal-free porphyrins. At the same time the Zncomplexes of porphyrins are more phototoxic than their metal-free analogues. Zn-metalloporphyrins with allyl and butyl functional groups were shown the highest efficiency against E. coli. The photodynamic action of cationic Zn -TBut4PyP metalloporphyrin against Gram(+) (St. aureus and St. epidermis) and Gram(-) (E.coli, strain K-12 and Salmonella sp.) microorganisms was investigated. It is revealed, that Gram (+) microorganisms were 3-5 times more susceptible to the compounds' phototoxic influence than Gram (-) microorganisms.

Influence of hypericin and synthetic (see manuscript for formula) on haemolysis of human erythrocytes was investigated. It was shown that both hypericin and synthetic porphyrins (TOEPyP and Zn-TOEPyP) did not cause haemolysis in the dark (24 hrs incubation), whereas Ag-TOEPyP leaded to haemolysis already after 40 min incubation, i.e. was cytotoxic. Hypericin (25 μM -125 μM) possessed haemolytic activity upon light exposure (visible spectrum, 30 mW/cm2, 5 min and more). Total haemolysis of erythrocytes was observed at 15 min exposure to light at all the investigated concentrations of hypericin. Dose-dependent haemolytic effect of TOEPyP and Zn-TOEPyP depending on light exposure time was also investigated. TOEPyP demonstrated considerably higher haemolytic activity compared to Zn-TOEPyP. Ag-TOEPyP demonstrated the weakest photodynamic activity. The effect of ascorbic acid on porphyrin-induced haemolysis was also revealed. Ascorbic acid at the concentration of 0.15 μM and above significantly increased haemolysis induced by hypericin, whereas at concentration of 0.75 μM and less it appeared to possess protective property. TOEPyP and Zn-TOEPyP did not demonstrate photodynamic properties in the presence of ascorbic acid (3.75 μM and more). The ascorbic acid at the concentrations below 3.75 μM did not have any influence on erythrocyte haemolysis induced by TOEPyP, while it increased haemolytic effect of Zn-TOEPyP. Thus, the full inhibition of photohaemolysis induced by (see manuscript for formula) by singlet oxygen quenchers - ascorbic acid and tryptophan - was shown. This testifies to the fact, that the photohaemolysis induced by these porphyrins is caused by Type II reactions.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the method of photosensitized tumor treatment. It is based on the photosensitizer (PS) selective accumulation in tumors, its subsequent activation under the light influence and oxygen active form formation that results in tumor destruction. Photodynamic action of some new water-soluble porphyrins was investigated in our laboratory. Dose-dependent effect of these porphyrins was shown on PC-12 murine pheochromocytoma cell line. The results revealed that the efficiency of the investigated porphyrins decreased in the following way: TOEPyP (meso-tetra-(4-N-oxyethylpyridyl)porphyrin) > Zn-TOEPyP > Ag-TOEPyP. It was shown that TOEPyP possessed nearly the same photodynamic activity (LD50) as well-known photosensitizer chlorin e6. These porphyrins have also demonstrated quite high photodynamic activity in vivo. The results were obtained in the experiments on white mice with engrafted C-180 (Croker's sarcoma). Antitumor activity of these porphyrins in the dark was 30-40%, whereas photodynamic activity was 45-60%.

The necessity of researches of antitumor efficiency of new photosensitizers (PS) is explained by the opportunity of their application in photodynamic therapy of tumors. PS, selectively accumulated in cancer cells and activated by the light, generate the active oxygen species that cause apoptosis. Earlier, it was shown that PS chlorin e6 (0.3-0.5 μg/ml) induces rat embryo fibroblast-like cell apoptosis. In present work antitumor activity of the new photosensitizers, water-soluble cationic porphyrins and their metal complexes, is investigated. The dose-dependent destruction of cancer cells was shown on PC-12 (pheochromocytoma, rat adrenal gland) and Jurkat (human lymphoma) cell lines. Meso-tetra-[4-N-(2 `- oxyethyl) pyridyl] porphyrin (TOEPyP) and chlorin e6 possessed the same toxicity at LD50 dose on PC-12 cell line, whereas phototoxicity of TOEPyP was 3 times less compared to chlorin e6(LD50=0.2 and 0.075 μg/ml accordingly). The results have shown weak photosensitizing effect of Zn-and Ag-derivatives of TOEPyP on PC-12 cell line. TOEPyP and Zn-TOEPyP (0.1 - 50 μg/ml) were non-toxic for Jurkat cell line, whereas Ag-TOEPyP was toxic at 10 μg/ml (LD90). TOEPyP and chlorin e6 have shown phototoxic effect in the same dose range (LD50=0.5 and 0.3 μg/ml accordingly). The investigation of toxic and phototoxic effects of the new porphyrins revealed significantly different sensitivity of various cell lines to PSs.

Reaction of NO with amorphous Mn(TPP) layers gives two Mn(TPP)(NO) isomers with linear and bent Mn-N-O geometries that reversibly interconvert with changes in temperature. DFT computations predict that the linear complex is the singlet ground state while the bent structure is a triplet state.

The interaction of porphyrins with membranes is an important part in understanding the mechanism of action of porphyrins on the biological object. Porphyrins exhibit biological effect as a result of direct interaction with biological membranes, or interaction with intracellular structures, as a result of its passing through the membrane. That's why it is very important to study the interaction of different porphyrins with membranes and to check if this interaction had any effect on the physicochemical properties of membranes. Because of the complicated organization and functioning of cellular membranes, it is appropriate to conduct experiments on model object, such is bilayer lipid membrane (BLM).The effect of meso-tetra-[4-N-(2′-oxyethyl) pyridyl] and Zn-meso-tetra-[4-N-(2′- oxyethyl) pyridyl] porphyrins on the permeability of BLM is studied using optical (UV/Vis absorption) method. The special cell adapted to UV/VIS spectrophotometer is made for the investigation of porphyrin penetration through BLM. The passage of porphyrins through the membrane is investigated by absorption in the Soret band as a function of time. As a result the permeability coefficient of BLM is calculated for these porphyrins by the method of least-squares [1].Obtained results allow to understand the mechanisms of porphyrins passage through the cell membranes. This approach is aimed at understanding and optimizing the chemical structure and pharmacological properties of porphyrins usable in medicine. These investigations are also important in terms of interaction of porphyrins with liposomes [2], as liposomes, the structural basis of which are bilayer membranes, are widely used as transportation to deliver drugs (for example, based on porphyrins) to the target-cell.[1] A.
