We characterise the thin-film structural properties and photoluminescence of femtosecond (40 fs, 800 nm) pulsed laser deposited Er3+-doped zinc-sodium tellurite glass on Si as a function of laser fluence. The laser fluence regime required for the formation of films composed of nanoparticles without droplets is found, the composition and crystallinity of the deposited material is reported and the photoluminescence of the films is characterised in dependence of film thickness.

Direct laser sintering on hard tissues is likely to open new pathways for personalised medicine. To minimise irradiation damage of the surrounding soft tissues, lasers operating at wavelengths that are ‘safe’ for the tissues and biomaterials with improved optical properties are required. In this work laser sintering is demonstrated with the use of an ultrafast, femtosecond (100 fs) pulsed laser operating at a wavelength of 1045 nm and two existing calcium phosphate minerals (brushite and hydroxyapatite) which have been improved after doping with iron (10 mol%). Femtosecond laser irradiation caused transformation of the Fe3+-doped brushite and Fe3+-doped HAp samples into β-calcium pyrophosphate and calcium-iron-phosphate, respectively, with simultaneous evidence for microstructural sintering and densification. After estimating the temperature profile at the surface of the samples we suggest that soft tissues over 500 μm from the irradiated zone would be safe from thermal damage. This novel laser processing provides a means to control the phase constitution and the morphology of the finished surfaces. The porous structure of β-pyrophosphate might be suitable for applications in bone regeneration by supporting osteogenic cell activity while, the densified Fe3+-rich calcium-iron-phosphate may be promising for applications like dental enamel restoration. We report the femtosecond laser (100 fs, 800 nm) ablation properties of Er3+ ion doped zinc-sodium tellurite glass. Ablation thresholds in dependence of the beam radius (13.9 and 32.0 μm), pulse number, and Er3+ ion dopant concentration have been determined. The ablation rate and crater profile depended on the applied fluence.

Candida esophagitis is being increasingly recognized in the practice of clinical gastroenterology. The widespread use of corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs, and cancer chemotherapy, combined with the frequent use of endoscopy for the evaluation of esophageal symptoms, often leads to the identification of Candida infection in this part of the gastrointestinal tract. The salient clinical features of Candida esophagitis include odynophagia and dysphagia, although gastrointestinal bleeding may occasionally be the sole presenting symptom. While the radiological signs of Candida esophagitis are nonspecific, the endoscopic appearance is quite characteristic. Demonstration of tissue invasion by fungal mycelia on mucosal biopsy of the esophagus is diagnostic. The role of serology in the diagnosis of Candida esophagitis is not well defined. Oral nystatin therapy has been extensively used to control Candida infection of the esophagus. More recently amphotericin-B, 5-fluorocytosine and imidazole derivatives have been effectively used to treat recalcitrant cases of Candida esophagitis.
