Across the planet the biogeographic distribution of human cultural diversity tends to correlate positively with biodiversity. In this paper we focus on the biogeographic distribution of mammal species and human cultural diversity. We show that not only are these forms of diversity similarly distributed in space, but they both scale superlinearly with environmental production. We develop theory that explains that as environmental productivity increases the ecological kinetics of diversity increases faster than expected because more complex environments are also more interactive. Using biogeographic databases of the global distributions of mammal species and human cultures we test a series of hypotheses derived from this theory and find support for each. For both mammals and cultures, we show that (1) both forms of diversity increase exponentially with ecological kinetics; (2) the kinetics of diversity is faster than the kinetics of productivity; (3) diversity scales superlinearly with environmental productivity; and (4) the kinetics of diversity is faster in increasingly productive environments. This biogeographic convergence is particularly striking because while the dynamics of biological and cultural evolution may be similar in principle the underlying mechanisms and time scales are very different. However, a common currency underlying all forms of diversity is ecological kinetics; the temperature-dependent fluxes of energy and biotic interactions that sustain all forms of life at all levels of organization. Diversity begets diversity in mammal species and human cultures because ecological kinetics drives superlinear scaling with environmental productivity.

Experimental archaeology continues to mature methodologically and theoretically. Around the world, practitioners are increasingly using modern materials that would have been unavailable to prehistoric people in archaeological experiments. The use of a modern material substitute can offer several benefits to experimental method, design, control, replicability, feasibility, and cost, but it should be directly compared to its “traditional” analogue to understand similarities and differences. Here, aluminum is introduced as a substitute for chert in prehistoric ballistics research because, critically, aluminum is safe, inexpensive, easy to process, and it and chert possess densities that differ by less than 4%. The aluminum casting process for replicating stone artifacts is presented, and it is shown that the aluminum castings are essentially identical in form, flake-scar patterning, and mass to their stone counterparts. We then present a proof-of-concept ballistics experiment that demonstrates no difference between aluminum and stone points in terms of target penetration.

Most previous studies investigated the remarkably low and complex friction properties of meniscus and cartilage under constant loading and motion conditions. However, both load and relative velocity within the knee joint vary considerably during physiological activities. Hence, the question arises how friction of both tissues is affected by physiological testing conditions occurring during gait. As friction properties are of major importance for meniscal replacement devices, the influence of these simulated physiological testing conditions was additionally tested for a potential meniscal implant biomaterial. Using a dynamic friction testing device, three different friction tests were conducted to investigate the influence of either just varying the motion conditions or the normal load and also to replicate the physiological gait conditions. It could be shown for the first time that the friction coefficient during swing phase was statistically higher than during stance phase when varying both loading and motion conditions according to the physiological gait pattern. Further, the friction properties of the exemplary biomaterial were also higher, when tested under dynamic gait parameters compared to static conditions, which may suggest that static conditions can underestimate the friction coefficient rather than reflecting the in vivo performance.

Estimating the total human population size (i.e., abundance) of the preagricultural planet is important for setting the baseline expectations for human-environment interactions if all energy and material requirements to support growth, maintenance, and well-being were foraged from local environments. However, demographic parameters and biogeographic distributions do not preserve directly in the archaeological record. Rather than attempting to estimate human abundance at some specific time in the past, a principled approach to making inferences at this scale is to ask what the human demography and biogeography of a hypothetical planet Earth would look like if populated by ethnographic hunter-gatherer societies. Given ethnographic hunter-gatherer societies likely include the largest, densest, and most complex foraging societies to have existed, we suggest population inferences drawn from this sample provide an upper bound to demographic estimates in prehistory. Our goal in this paper is to produce principled estimates of hunter-gatherer abundance, diversity, and biogeography. To do this we trained an extreme gradient boosting algorithm (XGBoost) to learn ethnographic hunter-gatherer population densities from a large matrix of climatic, environmental, and geographic data. We used the predictions generated by this model to reconstruct the hunter-gatherer biogeography of the rest of the planet. We find the human abundance of this world to be 6.1±2 million with an ethnolinguistic diversity of 8,330±2,770 populations, most of whom would have lived near coasts and in the tropics.Significance StatementUnderstanding the abundance of humans on planet Earth prior to the development of agriculture and the industrialized world is essential to understanding human population growth. However, the problem is that these features of human populations in the past are unknown and so must be estimated from data. We developed a machine learning approach that uses ethnographic and environmental data to reconstruct the demography and biogeography of planet Earth if populated by hunter-gatherers. Such a world would house about 6 million people divided into about 8,330 populations with a particular concentration in the tropics and along coasts.

Comparative phylogenetic analyses based on linguistic data are useful for reconstructing the cultural evolution of recent expansions of humans around the world. It is an exciting time for phylogenetic comparative studies in lowland South America given the emergence of more comprehensive ethnolinguistic datasets. Phylogenetic methods can now be applied to more lowland language families to facilitate the study of pre-historical population expansions and cultural variation. This chapter investigates phylogenetic relationships among the six major lowland South American language families using structural linguistic data. Two cultural traits that are likely to have deep evolutionary histories that extend back to last common ancestors of several large language families include uxorilocal postmarital residence (women continue to live near natal families after marriage) and partible paternity beliefs (conception belief that multiple men can be co-genitors of one child). The Carib-Pano-Tupi-Jê clade is mostly uxorilocal with partible paternity beliefs in thirty-eight of forty-three societies.

A key feature of the distribution of life on Earth is the positive correlation between environmental productivity and biodiversity. This correlation also characterizes the distribution of human cultural diversity, which is highest near the equator and decreases exponentially toward the poles. Moreover, it is now understood that the tropics house more biodiversity than would be expected from energy availability alone suggesting “diversity begets diversity”. Here we show the same is also true for human cultural diversity. This convergence is particularly striking because while the dynamics of biological and cultural evolution may be similar in principle the mechanisms and time scales involved are very different. However, a common currency underlying all forms of diversity is ecological kinetics; the temperature-dependent fluxes of energy and biotic interactions that sustain life at all levels of biological and social organization. Using macroecological theory and the analysis of global databases we show both mammal diversity and cultural diversity scale superlinearly with environmental productivity at rates predicted by the ecological kinetics of environmental productivity. Diversity begets diversity in human cultures and mammal species because the kinetics of energy availability and biotic interactions result in superlinear scaling with environmental productivity.

Short-term hunter-gatherer residential camps have been a central feature of human settlement patterns and social structure for most of human evolutionary history. Recent analyses of ethnohistoric hunter-gatherer data show that across different environments, the average size of hunter-gatherer bands is remarkably constant and that bands are commonly formed by a small number of coresident families. Using ethnoarchaeological data, we examine the relationship between the physical infrastructure of camps and their social organization. We compiled a dataset of 263 ethnoarchaeologically observed hunter-gatherer camps from 13 studies in the literature. We focus on both the scale of camps, or their average size, structure, and composition, and the dynamics that governed their variation. Using a combination of inferential statistics and linear models, we show that the physical infrastructure of camps, measured by the number of household features, reflects the internal social organization of hunter-gatherer bands. Using scaling analyses, we then show that the variation among individual camps is related to a predictable set of dynamics between camp area, infrastructure, the number of occupants, and residence time. Moreover, the scale and dynamics that set the statistical variance in camp sizes are similar across different environments and have important implications for reconstructing prehistoric hunter-gatherer social organization and behavior from the archaeological record.

Purpose To restore meniscal function after excessive tissue damage, a silk fibroin implant for partial meniscal replacement was developed and investigated in an earlier sheep model. After 6 months implantation, it showed promising results in terms of chondroprotection and biocompatibility. To improve surgical fixation, the material was subjected to optimisation and a fibre mesh was integrated into the porous matrix. The aim of the study was the evaluation of this second generation of silk fibroin implants in a sheep model. Methods Nine adult merino sheep received subtotal meniscal replacement using the silk fibroin scaffold. In nine additional animals, the defect was left untreated. Sham surgery was performed in another group of nine animals. After 6 months of implantation macroscopic, biomechanical and histological evaluations of the scaffold, meniscus, and articular cartilage were conducted. Results Macroscopic evaluation revealed no signs of inflammation of the operated knee joint and most implants were located in the defect. However, there was no solid connection to the remaining peripheral meniscal rim and three devices showed a radial rupture at the middle zone. The equilibrium modulus of the scaffold increased after 6 months implantation time as identified by biomechanical testing (before implantation 0.6 ± 0.3 MPa; after implantation: 0.8 ± 0.3 MPa). Macroscopically and histologically visible softening and fibrillation of the articular cartilage in the meniscectomy- and implant group were confirmed biomechanically by indentation testing of the tibial cartilage. Conclusions In the current study, biocompatibility of the silk fibroin scaffold was reconfirmed. The initial mechanical properties of the silk fibroin implant resembled native meniscal tissue. However, stiffness of the scaffold increased considerably after implantation. This might have prevented integration of the device and chondroprotection of the underlying cartilage. Furthermore, the increased stiffness of the material is likely responsible for the partial destruction of some implants. Clinically, we learn that an inappropriate replacement device might lead to similar cartilage damage as seen after meniscectomy. Given the poor acceptance of the clinically available partial meniscal replacement devices, it can be speculated that development of a total meniscal replacement device might be the less challenging option.

The human species is diverse in the size, structure and complexity of our social organizations. Today, human sociopolitical complexity ranges from stateless small-scale societies to complex states that integrate millions of individuals over vast geographic areas. Here, we explore major transitions across this range of complexity. In particular, we examine the statistical structure of these transitions using Horton-Strahler branching, generalized Horton Laws, and allometric spatial mixed-effect models. We show that all major transitions in sociopolitical complexity follow an invariant fractal-like growth process; with each transition there is an additional level of jurisdictional hierarchy, a four-fold increase in population size, a two-fold increase in population area, and therefore a doubling of population density. These statistics fully describe all transitions from the least to the most complex societies. However, these transitions are probabilistic, not deterministic in nature. This fact explains the asymmetry of human sociopolitical evolution: while more complex societies were necessarily once less complex, less complex societies do not necessarily become more complex.

Group living is common in mammals, particularly in primates and humans. Across species, groups are social networks where co-residing members exchange information and balance trade-offs between competition and cooperation for space, resources, and reproductive opportunities. From a macroecological perspective, species-specific group sizes are ultimately constrained by body size, population density, and the environmental supply rate of home ranges. Here, we derive an allometric null model for group size in mammals based on individual energy demands and ecological constraints. Using Bayesian phylogenetic mixed models we show that primates exhibit unique allometries relative to other mammals. Moreover, as large-bodied primates, human hunter-gatherers have among the largest social groups of any mammal. We then explore the consequences of this unique social allometry by considering how mammalian brain size scales up in social groups that differ in size across mammals. We show similarly unique allometries in what we term the collective brain mass of social groups in primates relative to all other mammals. These results show that for a given body size primates have both larger brains and larger social networks than other mammals. Consequently, proportionally larger primate brains interact in proportionally larger social networks with important consequences for group cognition. We suggest that the size, scale, and complexity of human social networks in the 21stcentury have deep evolutionary roots in primate ecology and mammalian brain allometry.

The aim of the current study was to verify if a previously developed silk fibroin scaffold for meniscal replacement is able to restore the physiological distribution of contact pressure (CP) over the articulating surfaces in the human knee joint, thereby reducing peak loads occurring after partial meniscectomy. The pressure distribution on the medial tibial articular surface of seven human cadaveric knee joints was analysed under continuous flexion–extension movements and under physiological loads up to 2,500 N at different flexion angles. Contact area (CA), maximum tibiofemoral CP, maximum pressure under the meniscus and the pressure distribution were analysed for the intact meniscus, after partial meniscectomy as well as after partial medial meniscal replacement using the silk fibroin scaffold. Implantation of the silk fibroin scaffold considerably improved tibiofemoral contact mechanics after partial medial meniscectomy. While the reduced CA after meniscectomy was not fully restored by the silk fibroin scaffold, clinically relevant peak pressures on the articular cartilage surface occurring after partial meniscectomy were significantly reduced. Nevertheless, at high flexion angles static testing demonstrated that normal pressure distribution comparable to the intact meniscus could not be fully achieved. The current study demonstrates that the silk fibroin implant possesses attributes that significantly improve tibiofemoral CPs within the knee joint following partial meniscectomy. However, the failure to fully recapitulate the CAs and pressures observed in the intact meniscus, particularly at high flexion angles, indicates that the implant's biomechanical properties may require further improvement to completely restore tibiofemoral contact mechanics. © 2019 The Authors. The menisci protect the articular cartilage by reducing contact pressure in the knee. To restore their function after injury, a new silk fibroin replacement scaffold was developed. To elucidate its tribological properties, friction of the implant was tested against cartilage and glass, where the latter is typically used in tribological cartilage studies. The silk scaffold exhibited a friction coefficient against cartilage of 0.056, which is higher than meniscus against cartilage but in range of the requirements for meniscal replacements. Further, meniscus friction against glass was lower than cartilage against glass, which correlated with the surface lubricin content. Concluding, the tribological properties of the new material suggest a possible long-term chondroprotective function. In contrast, glass always produced high, non-physiological friction coefficients., Highlights • A new silk fibroin scaffold provides low friction coefficient against articular cartilage. • A high friction coefficient is observed when tested against glass due to the missing interstitial fluid load support. • Friction studies of non-biological materials, e.g. for implants, should be carried out against articular cartilage. • Meniscus has a higher lubricin content on its surface in comparison to articular cartilage.

The south coast of South Africa provides the earliest evidence for Middle Stone Age (MSA) coastal resource exploitation by early Homo sapiens. In coastal archaeology worldwide, there has been a debate over the general productivity of intertidal foraging, leading to studies that directly measure productivity in some regions, but there have been no such studies in South Africa. Here we present energetic return rate estimates for intertidal foraging along the southern coast of South Africa from Blombos Cave to Pinnacle Point. Foraging experiments were conducted with Khoi-San descendants of the region, and hourly caloric return rates for experienced foragers were measured on 41 days near low tide and through three seasons over two study years. On-site return rates varied as a function of sex, tidal level, marine habitat type and weather conditions. The overall energetic return rate from the entire sample (1492 kcal h(-1)) equals or exceeds intertidal returns reported from other hunter-gatherer studies, as well as measured return rates for activities as diverse as hunting mammals and plant collecting. Returns are projected to be exceptionally high (∼ 3400 kcal h(-1) for men, ∼ 1900 kcal h(-1) for women) under the best combination of conditions. However, because of the monthly tidal cycle, high return foraging is only possible for about 10 days per month and for only 2-3 h on those days. These experiments suggest that while intertidal resources are attractive, women and children could not have subsisted independently, nor met all their protein-lipid needs from marine resources alone, and would have required substantial additional energy and nutrients from plant gathering and/or from males contributing game.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common malignant bone tumor of children and young adults. Although the optimization of combination chemotherapy has led to significantly improved prognosis, survival remains poor for patients with recurrent tumor or metastatic disease at diagnosis. The expansion of the human species out of Africa in the Pleistocene, and the subsequent development of agriculture in the Holocene resulted in waves of linguistic diversification and replacement across the planet. Analogous to the growth of populations or the speciation of biological organisms, languages diversify over time to form phylogenies of language families. However, the dynamics of this diversification process are unclear. Bayesian methods applied to lexical and phonetic data have created dated linguistic phylogenies for 18 language families encompassing ∼3,000 of the world’s ∼7,000 extant languages. In this paper we use these phylogenies to quantify how fast languages expand and diversify through time both within and across language families. The overall diversification rate of languages in our sample is ∼0.001 yr-1(or a doubling time of ∼700 yr) over the last 6,000 years with evidence for nonlinear dynamics in language diversification rates over time, where both within and across language families, diversity initially increases rapidly and then slows. The large-scale replacement of the world’s hunter-gatherer languages by agricultural languages over the Holocene was a non-constant process.

Background The world’s last uncontacted indigenous societies in Amazonia have only intermittent and often hostile interactions with the outside world. Knowledge of their locations is essential for urgent protection efforts, but their extreme isolation, small populations, and semi-nomadic lifestyles make this a challenging task. Methods Remote sensing technology with Landsat satellite sensors is a non-invasive methodology to track isolated indigenous populations through time. However, the small-scale nature of the deforestation signature left by uncontacted populations clearing villages and gardens has similarities to those made by contacted indigenous villages. Both contacted and uncontacted indigenous populations often live in proximity to one another making it difficult to distinguish the two in satellite imagery. Here we use machine learning techniques applied to remote sensing data with a training dataset of 500 contacted and 25 uncontacted villages. Results Uncontacted villages generally have smaller cleared areas, reside at higher elevations, and are farther from populated places and satellite-detected lights at night. A random forest algorithm with an optimally-tuned detection cutoff has a leave-one-out cross-validated sensitivity and specificity of over 98%. A grid search around known uncontacted villages led us to identify three previously-unknown villages using predictions from the random forest model. Our efforts can improve policies toward isolated populations by providing better near real-time knowledge of their locations and movements in relation to encroaching loggers, settlers, and other external threats to their survival.

Objectives Genealogies contain information on the prevalence of different sibling types that result from past reproductive behavior. Full sibling sets stem from stable monogamy, paternal half siblings primarily indicate male reproductive skew, and maternal half siblings reflect unstable pair bonds. Methods Full and half sibling types are calculated for a total of 61,181 siblings from published genealogies for 80 small-scale societies, including foragers, horticulturalists, agriculturalists, and pastoralists from around the world. Results Most siblings are full (61%) followed by paternal half siblings (27%) and maternal half siblings (13%). Paternal half siblings are positively correlated with more polygynous marriages, higher at low latitudes, and slightly higher in nonforagers, Maternal half sibling fractions are slightly higher at low latitudes but do not vary with subsistence. Partible paternity societies in Amazonia have more paternal half siblings indicating higher male reproductive skew. Conclusions Sibling counts from genealogies provide a convenient method to simultaneously investigate the reproductive skew and pair-bond stability dimensions of human mating systems cross-culturally. This essay addresses the significance and evidence surrounding the debate about how hunter-gatherers and other humans organize their residential groups. In most species of mammals, either males or female remain in their natal group (the philopatric sex) while the other sex disperses at maturity (the dispersing sex). Sex-biased philopatry and dispersal has many downstream effects on all aspects of social bonds and organization. Recent genetic data and detailed cross-cultural ethnographic information suggest that human societies are quite variable and flexible in nature with males and females likely to either stay or disperse from natal families. Brothers and sisters commonly coreside in the same community and form life-long bonds in a system quite unlike that of our primate relatives. This multilocal human residence pattern of flexible residence combined with marriage exchange systems create complex meta-group social structures with kin-based coalitions that extend across multiple residential groups. Human kinship and social networks that encompass multiple communities led to the emergence of large alliances at scales unparalleled by other species.

Partible paternity, the belief that a child can have more than one biological father, is widespread in lowland South America. An analysis of demographic data sets from four lowland tribes (Aché, Barí, Ese Eja, and Surui) reveals a systematic variation in the sex ratios of live births with respect to the number of fathers to whom the births are attributed. Births attributed to only one father show a sex ratio that is unexceptional for South America; births with two fathers are highly male biased, while children with three or more fathers are female biased. This pattern may be a manifestation of a phenomenon predicted by the Trivers-Willard hypothesis, which proposes that, in many circumstances, females in good condition might bias their offspring toward males, whereas those in poor condition would produce a preponderance of females. If, as suggested below, a woman with a husband and a single extramarital lover tends to be better cared for before and during a pregnancy than other women, this difference might result in the improved maternal condition required by the Trivers-Willard hypothesis for excess males, whereas women who accept two or more lovers might be preponderantly those who are already in distress, thus tending to produce female-biased offspring.

Hypotheses on the benefits of the practice of partible paternity are tested using demographic data for Ache foragers of Paraguay. Partible paternity refers to the institution of multiple males considered to contribute to the conception of a single offspring. Analyses focus on patterns of primary and secondary co-fatherhood among men, genealogical relationships between co-fathers, and relation between band co-residence and co-fatherhood. Results indicate that men who had more secondary fatherhood also had more primary fatherhood; co-fathers are more closely related, on average, than men who are not co-fathers; and co-fathers were also more likely to reside together than men who were not co-fathers, even after controlling for relatedness. The relatedness of human groups has important ramifications for kin (group) selection to favor more collective action and invites the potential for more exploitation by political leaders. Endogamous marriages among kin create intensive kinship systems with high group relatedness, while exogamous marriages among nonrelatives create extensive kinship with low group relatedness. Here, a sample of 58 societies (7,565 adults living in 353 residential groups) shows that average group relatedness is higher in lowland horticulturalists than in hunter–gatherers. Higher relatedness in horticulturalists is remarkable given that village sizes are larger, harboring over twice the average number of adults than in hunter–gatherer camps. The relatedness differential between subsistence regimes increases for larger group sizes. Large and dense networks of kin may have favored an increased propensity for some forms of in-group cooperation and political inequality that emerged relatively recently in human history, after the advent of farming.

Objectives Marriages among kin have the dual effect of both increasing average group relatedness as well as reducing the total number of kin by eliminating more genealogically and geographically distant individuals from kinship networks. Marriage decisions therefore face a tradeoff between density of kin, or formation of intensive kinship systems, and the diversity of kin, or extensive kinship systems. This article tests the hypothesis that extensive kinship systems best characterize hunter-gatherer societies, whereas more intensive forms of subsistence, like horticultural, agricultural, and pastoral economies, are more likely to have intensive kinship systems. Methods Here, we investigate the wide range of variation in prevalence of kin marriages across a sample of 46 small-scale societies, split evenly between hunter-gatherers and agropastoralists (including horticulturalists), using genealogies that range in depth from 4 to 16 generations. Regression methods examine how subsistence and polygyny relate to spousal relatedness and inbreeding across societies. Results On average, hunter-gatherers show limited numbers of kin marriages and low levels of inbreeding, whereas some agropastoralists are characterized by much higher levels of both, especially in societies where polygynous marriages are more common. Conclusion Intensive kinship systems emerge in some intensive economies. This pattern may have favored a kin-selected increase in more large-scale cooperation and inequality occurring relatively recently in human history after the advent of domesticated plants and animals.
