Abstract Background The therapeutic role and prognostic relevance of lymphadenectomy in mast cell tumor (MCT) has historically been evaluated on regional rather than sentinel lymph nodes. Hypothesis/Objectives To update information about the association of histological nodal (HN) classes with clinical outcome in dogs with MCT after tumor excision and extirpation of normal‐sized sentinel nodes (SLN) guided by radiopharmaceutical. Animals Ninety‐four dogs with histologically‐confirmed treatment‐naïve MCT (71 cutaneous, 22 subcutaneous and 1 conjunctival MCT) were included if without: distant metastases, lymphadenomegaly, concurrent mixed cutaneous, and subcutaneous MCT. Methods This was a monoistitutional cohort study. Tumors characteristics were retrieved and SLNs were classified according to Weishaar's system. Incidence of MCT‐related events (local, nodal, distant relapse), de novo MCT or other tumors and death (MCT‐related and non‐MCT‐related), were recorded. Incidence curves were compared among the HN classes. Results Twenty‐seven dogs had HN0, 19 HN1, 37 HN2, and 11 HN3 SLN. Thirteen (2 HN0, 4 HN2, and 7 HN3) received adjuvant chemotherapies. Kiupel high grade, increasing number of SLN and lymphocentrums were associated with higher HN classes. Five dogs died for MCT‐related causes: 1 low‐grade (HN0) and 1 subcutaneous (HN3) had a local relapse, 2 high‐grade had distant relapse (HN3‐HN0) and 1 dog developed disease progression from a de novo subcutaneous MCT. No nodal relapse was registered. Fourteen dogs developed de novo MCTs. Conclusion/Discussion Low grade/low‐risk MCT with nonpalpable and normal sized SLN have a favorable outcome independently from the HN. Result should be considered strictly related to the successful SLN detection guided pre‐ and intraoperative by radiopharmaceutical markers.

In 1934, the American writer Roger Shaw stated that “the functioning of the NRA (National Recovery Administration) is clearly an American-style adaptation of the Italian corporate state”. Mussolini himself proudly recognised the mark of fascism in the New Deal overseas. The purpose of this paper, however, is not a historical-ideological comparison. Indeed, recent work has shown that rather than following fascism, the New Deal shows the entry of global tendencies into American politics and that the NRA’s precedent was the War Industries Board of 1917 rather than Alfredo Rocco and Carlo Costamagna’s Labour Charter. It is also now clear that fascist corporatism was one of those national experiments that enjoyed transnational and Atlantic appeal and circulation. Instead, the paper will focus on these main global tendencies, the emergence of plan thinking, and what we see as the red thread that holds together experiments in reforming and restructuring capitalism. Such experiments are varied and and not confined to the history of totalitarianism and the rise of authoritarian regimes. Therefore, the essay analyses how, with what weight and effects, plan thinking played a part in turning the fascist corporate state and the New Deal into alternatives to Soviet planning that threatened to be the only real alternative to capitalism.

The 1960s and 1970s constituted a fundamental turning point in US democracy marked by the apogee of liberalism and its crisis. In this context, one of the best known American economists, John Kenneth Galbraith, observes how technology, its constant advancement, transforms the relationship between state and market and redefines the role of institutions in society. His critique of the technostructure of the corporation, as a form of totalitarian planning that opposes and dominates the market, is aimed at revealing the project of social governance that it conceals. In his trilogy devoted to the new industrial state and what he calls the «affluent society», a new conceptualisation of social power and the possibility of re-establishing public authority over it emerges.

In his novel, Machines Like Me (2019), Ian McEwan offers an interesting example of “alternate history” while dealing with crucial ethical issues connected with the development of Artificial Intelligence. Instead of setting his story in the future, the author chooses to set it in the past, but he radically changes the contours of the latter. Hence, the England of the early 1980s is turned into a technologically advanced society, well ahead of the scientific progress of the early 21st century. Thus, the future casts its light on the past in what appears as a typically postmodernist mélange: besides mingling genres (from speculative fiction to uchronia), McEwan also performs an intriguing hybridization of fact and fiction. The paper intends to explore the rich historical dimension of the novel, which betrays the author’s interest in the reflection on history and on its narrativization – as well as its manipulation and/or contamination – within the literary text.

For bell hooks, the relationship between teaching and learning is historical. What the academy is from the perspective of a concept of knowledge that is historically located within differences of race, class and gender, what hierarchies it reaffirms and what spaces of thought it opens is the focus of hooks' reflection on education. Faced with the corporatization of the US university, the institutionalization of women's and black studies, hooks puts forward a radical vision of education, which considers teaching a transgression of any “bureaucratization of the mind:” learning is about opening up a process of collective transformation.

(1) Background: the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) has been reported to increase in some infectious or inflammatory diseases in dogs, but no information on the frequency of increases in a routine clinical setting exists. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of an increased ESR in dogs and to investigate its possible association with hematologic changes; (2) Methods: A total of 295 EDTA blood samples were randomly selected from the routine caseload of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Samples were grouped in controls and in pathologic groups based on the clinical presentation. A routine hemogram was performed, then the ESR was measured using the instrument MINI-PET; (3) Results: compared with controls, the ESR was significantly higher in all the pathologic groups, except for the hematological disorders group. The highest ESR was found in samples from dogs with chronic kidney disease or inflammation, followed by those from dogs with mild chronic disorders, severe/acute diseases, tumors and urinary disorders. The ESR negatively correlated with hematocrit and positively with neutrophil counts. (4) Conclusions: The ESR increases more frequently in dogs with clinically evident inflammation or CKD, but also in several other conditions, likely as a consequence of anemia and acute phase response.

On 31 August 1886 Eleanor Marx left Liverpool for Chicago for a trip that would be the perfect occasion to sharpen her feminist thought. Inquiring the American workers movement and women condition, Eleanor found the problem of the day. “How should woman organize?” became the crucial question of her socialist activism among women but also among men. The United States were the ground of an essential transformation of socialist politics, where sex, class and race were already political weapons the workers movement had to learn to use for their own freedom.

This essay intends to investigate John A. Hobson’s theory of liberal- ism from a political perspective, starting from his declaration of the death of liberalism, analysing his writings on social problems to ex- plain his so called science of human welfare. In particular, the essay focuses on some crucial knots around which his revision of liberalism moves: 1. the need for an ethical vision of economy; 2. the conception of society, subjectivity and the state in the face of the crisis of individualism and laissez faire; 3. his conception of an a «organic plan of social progress» and its political meaning. The analysis of these aspects of his work shows his importance for the history of political thought also beyond his famous study on imperialism and shows the rise of a new concept of liberal democracy, bringing into light its problems and contradictions.

Small extracellular vesicles (sEV) are a class of extracellular vesicles (30–150 nm), delivering molecules including proteins, metabolites, and microRNAs (miRNAs), involved in physiological intercellular crosstalk and disease pathogenesis. The present pilot study aims are (I) to develop an easy and fast protocol for the isolation of sEV from plasma of mast cell tumor (MCT)-affected dogs; (II) to evaluate if miR-21-5p (sEV-miR-21-5p), a miRNA overexpressed by MCT, is associated with sEV. Seventeen dogs have been enrolled in the study: 4 healthy and 13 (6 with and 7 without nodal metastasis) MCT-affected dogs. sEV were isolated using size exclusion chromatography (SEC) (IZON column 35nm) and were characterized by Western blot, Nanoparticle tracking analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. sEV-miR-21-5p was quantified using digital PCR. sEV expressed the specific markers CD9 and TSG101, and a marker of mast cell tryptase. The sEV mean concentration and size were 2.68E + 10 particles/ml, and 99.6 nm, 2.89E + 10 particles/ml and 101.7 nm, and 3.21E + 10 particles/ml and 124 nm in non-metastatic, nodal metastatic, and healthy samples, respectively. The comparative analysis demonstrated that the level of sEV-miR-21-5p was significantly higher in dogs with nodal metastasis compared to healthy (P = 0.038) and without nodal metastasis samples (P = 0.007). In conclusion, the present work demonstrated that a pure population of sEV can be isolated from the plasma of MCT-affected dogs using the SEC approach and that the level of sEV-miR-21-5p is higher in nodal metastatic MCT-affected dogs compared with healthy and MCT-affected dogs without nodal involvement.

The paper intends to propose a reading of Ian McEwan’s latest novel, Machines Like Me (2019), qua insightful reflection on the topic of Artificial Intelligence and its bearings on different aspects of human life, from interpersonal relationships to moral behaviour. At the same time, the novel also engages in a reflection on the value and the prospects of literature, whose very premises might be called in question in a posthuman context. Set in a 1980s world whose contours radically deviate from historical facts – the atomic bomb was never dropped; Kennedy was not killed in Dallas; the Beatles are still a band; and Alan Turing has survived the conviction for homosexuality and successfully carried on his studies on AI – the novel introduces the simulacrum in the form of an android, Adam, a hyper-sophisticated machine that enters the characters’ life and upsets it thoroughly. The troublesome relationship with Adam forces Charlie, the protagonist-narrator, to ponder on his own system of values, posing questions about the Other which inevitably end up throwing new light – but, above all, casting new doubts – on the Self and on what it ultimately means to be human. By way of his “What if novel” set in an alternative past, McEwan tackles pressing issues of our present, while trying to envisage a future that is not far to come. The paper intends to explore both the ethical and the metaliterary level of the story on the background of the contemporary theoretical debate on transhumanism and posthumanism, pointing to the simulacrum as the uncanny catalyser of the major topics the author intends to tackle.

Cytological evaluation of lymph nodes (LN) in canine cutaneous mast cell tumors (MCT) has a key role in MCT staging. However, cytological discrimination between metastatic and reactive LNs is debated and diagnostic criteria inconsistent. The aim of this study was to retrospectively quantify nodal mast cells (MCs) in non-oncological (NOD) and MCT-bearing dogs (MCTBD), using different sample preparation techniques, to evaluate the significance of the MCT number. Cytological specimens from NOD-LNs (10 fine-needle aspirates—FNAs) and MCTBD-LNs (10 FNAs, 10 scrapings, 10 touch imprints) were evaluated. MCTBD-LNs were grouped in: non-metastatic, possibly-metastatic, and metastatic based on current literature criteria. MCs were counted in 4, 8, and 20 high-power-fields, and over 500, 1000, and 2000 total cells. MCs were significantly more numerous in MCTBD-LNs than in NOD-LNs and in “metastatic” samples than in “non-metastatic”. There was no significant difference between “metastatic” and “possibly metastatic” samples. Sample preparation techniques did not influence these results. A negative correlation between MCs number and sample cellularity was observed. Results were confirmed regardless of the counting method applied. MCs counting per se cannot distinguish possibly metastatic and metastatic cytological samples. Sample preparation technique and the counting method applied seem to have no influence on cytological quantification of nodal MCs in MCTBDs.

Abstract Background Family caregivers are key actors in the ageing society. They are mediators between practitioners and patients and usually provide also essential daily services for the elders. However, till now, few services have been deployed to help caregivers in their care tasks as in improving their mental health which can experience sever burden due to caregiving duties. The purpose of the study is to implement a community-based participatory research project to co-design an innovative organizational model of social services for family caregivers of elderly health consumers living in remote rural areas in Italy. Methods This is a community-based participatory research project in the remote area of Vallecamonica involving four main phases. These included a quantitative analysis of caregiver needs, a scoping review on existing services for caregivers, co-design workshops with local stakeholders and caregivers to create a novel service the piloting and a first implementation of the service and the assessment of project transferability to other contexts. Results As the hours dedicated to elder care increases, both objective and developmental caregiver’s burden significantly increases. Conversely, higher levels of engagement were associated with lower physical and emotional burden, and caregiver engagement was positively correlated with their perceived self-efficacy in managing disruptive patient behaviours. Based on these preliminary results, four co-design workshops with caregivers were conducted and led to the definition of the SOS caregivers service, built on four pillars structured upon the previous need analysis: a citizens’ management board, training courses, peer-to-peer meetings, and project and service information. We found that co-design is an effective means of creating new services for family caregivers, whose experiential knowledge proved to be a key resource for the project team in delivering and managing services. Less positively, the transferability analysis indicated that local municipalities remain reluctant to acknowledge caregivers’ pivotal role. Conclusions A dedicated support service for caregivers can ameliorate caregiving conditions and engagement levels. The service has resulted a successful co-productive initiative for a psycho-social intervention for family caregivers. For the future, we suggest that family caregiver should be considered an active partner in the process of designing novel psycho-social services and not just as recipients to enhance a better aging-in-place process.

Abstract Prostatic leiomyosarcoma is an uncommon tumor encountered in male dogs, with only 2 cases reported in the veterinary literature with no follow‐up described. A 12‐year‐old male intact German Wirehaired Pointer presented for evaluation of straining to defecate and urinate. Whole body computed tomography (CT) examination identified a spherical multicavitary expansile mass arising from the prostate gland and severely obliterating the pelvic canal. Partial subcapsular prostatectomy was performed, and histological and immunohistochemical results were consistent with prostatic leiomyosarcoma. Metronomic cyclophosphamide and nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs were administered as adjuvant chemotherapy. Follow‐up CT 10 months later indicated no signs of recurrence or metastasis. To the best of our knowledge, this patient represents the first report of successful multidisciplinary treatment consisting of partial subcapsular prostatectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy for prostatic leiomyosarcoma in a dog. After 15 months of follow‐up, the patient remained recurrence‐free without metastasis.

Abstract Introduction Anhedonia is defined as the reduced ability to feel pleasure and is a core symptom of various psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. The Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) was developed to assess the presence of anhedonia. The objective of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the SHAPS. Methods In this study, the SHAPS (14 items) was translated into Brazilian Portuguese and validated using data obtained from 228 subjects within a clinical sample. Psychometric properties were assessed using item response theory (logistic models) and classical test theory (Cronbach’s alpha). We checked for external validity using a non-parametric correlation with an independent scale: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale – Depression subscale (HAD-D). Results The SHAPS presented good internal consistency, with a Cronbach’s α coefficient of 0.759 and adequacy to an IRT 1 parameter logistic (Rasch) model. The SHAPS presented significant correlation with the external measure HAD-D, with Spearman’s ρ = 0.249 (S = 1368914; p < 0.001). Conclusion These results suggest that the Brazilian Portuguese version of the SHAPS is a reliable and valid instrument to assess hedonic tone.

Methylene Blue (MB) is combined with radiopharmaceutical for intraoperative sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping, but its role during SLN extirpation has not been investigated yet in veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was to assess whether MB increased surgical detection of SLN beyond the use of intraoperative gamma-probe (IGP) alone in clinically node-negative dogs with mast cell tumors (MCTs) following the detection of sentinel lymphocentrums (SLCs) via preoperative planar lymphoscintigraphy. Dogs enrolled underwent MCT excision and SLC exploration guided by both MB and IGP. Data recorded for each SLN were staining (blue/non-blue), radioactivity (hot/non-hot), and histopathological status (HN0-1 vs. HN2-3). A total of 103 dogs bearing 80 cutaneous, 35 subcutaneous, and 1 mucocutaneous MCTs were included; 140 SLCs were explored, for a total of 196 SLNs removed. Associating MB with IGP raised the SLNs detection rate from 90% to 95%. A total of 44% of SLNs were metastatic: 86% were blue/hot, 7% were only blue, 5% were only hot, and 2% were non-blue/non-hot. All HN3 SLNs were hot. Combining MB with IGP can increase the rate of SLN detection in dogs with MCTs; nonetheless, all lymph nodes identified during dissection should be removed, as they might be unstained but metastatic.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation is the main therapeutic alternative for patients with advanced liver disease. These patients have high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities that may negatively interfere in clinical outcomes and quality of life. It is not clear in the literature whether the different etiologies of hepatic disease have the same prevalence of psychiatric disorders. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether patients in the liver transplant list showed differences in psychiatric characteristics, medical variables and quality of life among different etiological groups. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study that evaluates quality of life, psychiatric and clinical comorbidities through the application of validated questionnaires and instruments in 248 patients who were on transplant waiting list from 2010 to 2014, assisted in a University Hospital and in a Private Hospital in Salvador/Bahia, Brazil. The patients were evaluated through the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I. PLUS 5.0) and Medical Outcomes Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). RESULTS: The etiology of the most prevalent liver disease was hepatitis C virus. A prevalence of 50.8% of at least one mental disorder was identified. When alcohol abuse/dependence was excluded, the prevalence was 25.8%. Mental health did not show a statistically significant difference in the diverse etiological groups, but a higher prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities was detected among women and younger than 40 years. No cases of psychotic disorders were detected, possibly by exclusion prior to listing. There was no difference in the quality of life domains in the different liver etiological groups. CONCLUSION: A high-prevalence of psychiatric disorders was found among all clinical conditions most associated with indication for liver transplantation. Attention is drawn to the absence of patients with psychotic disorders, which suggests that transplantation may not have been indicated for this group of patients. For these reasons, professionals caring for liver transplant candidates should be highly vigilant for the presence of mental disorders, regardless of the etiology of liver disease. Specialized care is recommended to minimize the early exclusion of patients with no other therapeutic possibilities, as well as care of all people with mental disorders.

Abstract Background Pet dogs spontaneously develop lymphoma. An anthracycline-based multidrug chemotherapy regimen represents the treatment cornerstone; however, cure is rarely achieved. We have been treating dogs with B-cell lymphoma with an autologous vaccine (APAVAC®) and CHOP-based chemotherapy since 2011. Methods To better characterize the safety and efficacy of APAVAC®, and to find the best candidates for immunotherapy, we designed a retrospective study on all dogs treated with chemo-immunotherapy to date and compared them with those dogs treated with chemotherapy only. All dogs were completely staged and re-staged at the end of treatment. The primary endpoint was the effectiveness of chemo-immunotherapy, measured as time to progression (TTP), lymphoma-specific survival (LSS), and 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates. The secondary objective was safety. Results Three hundred dogs were included: 148 (49.3%) received chemotherapy and 152 (50.7%) chemo-immunotherapy. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is a well-established staging tool in canine oncology. This study aims to explore the feasibility of SLN biopsy in dogs with scars from prior excised solid malignancies that were referred for further tumor staging and/or adjuvant treatment options. Mapping was either performed using radiopharmaceutical, methylene blue, and/or near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) imaging. Thirty-three dogs with 34 scars from prior excision of the mast cell tumor (MCT) (n = 29), soft tissue sarcoma (n = 2), oral melanoma (n = 1), subungual melanoma (n = 1), and mammary adenocarcinoma (n = 1) were retrospectively enrolled. Primary treatment consisted of curative intent/wide tumor excisions in 50.0% of dogs and marginal excision in the remaining 50.0%. The median time between tumor excision and SLN biopsy was 50 days (range 17–110 days). The procedure was successful in 31/34 scars, translating to a detection rate of 91.2%. The SLN did not correspond to the regional lymph node in 19/31 scars (61.3%). SLN metastases were histologically identified in 13/31 (41.9%) dogs, all of them affected by MCT. Based on our results, SLN biopsy using lymphoscintigraphy/methylene blue and/or NIRF is feasible in dogs presenting with scars from the prior surgical excision of solid tumors, and should be suggested for accurate nodal staging.

Introduction Engaging family caregivers could be a critical asset to make the ‘ageing-in-place’ imperative a reality. This is particularly evident in rural and remote areas, where caregivers can fill the gaps that exist due to the fragmentation of the welfare system. However, there is little knowledge about the expectations that family caregivers have from healthcare services in rural and remote areas.Place4Carers (P4C) project aims to co-produce an innovative organisational model of social and healthcare services for family caregivers of older citizens living in Vallecamonica (Italy). The project is expected to facilitate ageing-in-place for older citizens, thus helping caregivers in their daily care activities.Methods and analysis P4C is a community-based participatory research project featuring five work packages (WPs). WP1 consists of a survey of unmet needs of caregivers and older people receiving services in Vallecamonica. WP2 consists of a scoping literature review to map services that provide interventions of support to caregivers living in remote areas and promote engagement. WP3 organises co-creation workshops with caregivers to co-design, co-manage, and co-assess ideas and proposals for shaping caregiver-oriented services and organisational models. WP3 enriches the results of WP1 (survey) and WP2 (scoping literature review), and aims to co-create new ideas for intervention support with and for caregivers in relation to the objectives, features and characteristics of a new service able to address the caregivers’ needs and expectations. WP4 tests the service ideas co-created in WP3 through piloting an intervention based on ideas co-created with caregivers. Finally, WP5 assesses the transferability of the intervention to other similar contexts.Ethics and dissemination The study has been approved by the Ethics Committees of the Department of Psychology of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and Politecnico of Milan. Results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, scientific meetings and meetings with the general population.

Historically the plan has been about much more than economic planning. By plan-based thought I mean a concept of social governance that requires a multiple but structured articulation of social, economic, administrative and political forces and institutions and aims at shaping new forms of integration and social control using a specific scientific discourse. The following essays provide an analysis of global planning starting from different historical and geographical situations and different disciplinary perspectives. The broad picture that emerges shows points of continuity and discontinuity between different contexts and theories but also reveals a common theme: the conflictual relationship between economics and politics which not only reflects the hierarchies between state and society but also shows the dialectic between different forms and conceptions of power and their social reproduction. Plan-based thought does not only concern temporary institutional transformations, but reacts and is connected to the management of social conflicts over time.

Yevgeni A. Preobrazhensky was one of the main economists of Soviet Russia. In his analysis of the transition from the NEP to socialism we find structural elements of what the author calls plan-based thought. The concept of «socialist rationality» and «primitive socialist accumulation», the formulation of a «new economic and administrative science», the concept of planning as a result of «social rationalization» and the idea of «forecasting» as an expression of a specific conception of time that claims to impose the future in the present, are fundamental for understanding plan-based thought and its transformations on a global level.

Adjuvant treatments are recommended in dogs with incompletely excised cutaneous soft-tissue sarcoma (STS) to reduce the risk of local recurrence (LR), although guidelines are lacking on how to manage clean but close margins (CbCM). This retrospective study investigates the impact of CbCM on LR of canine STS. Ninety-eight surgically excised canine STS at first presentation were included. Tissue samples were routinely trimmed and analyzed. Cumulative incidence of LR was estimated for each category of margins (tumor-free, infiltrated, CbCM), and included CbCM in the tumor-free and infiltrated category, respectively. The prognostic impact on LR was then adjusted for relevant prognostic factors. Cumulative incidence of LR at three years differed significantly between the three categories (p = 0.016), and was estimated to be 42% with infiltrated margins, 23% with CbCM, 7% with tumor-free margins. Both when CbCM were grouped with infiltrated margins (p = 0.033; HR = 5.05), and when CbCM were grouped with tumor-free margins (p = 0.011; HR = 3.13), a significant difference between groups was found. STS excised with infiltrated margins had the greatest risk of LR. The rate of LR with CbCm was greater than recurrence rate of tumor-free margins. The category CbCM may be considered as a separate prognostic category.

The recent literature supports the sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy in dogs with MCT due to discrepancy with the regional lymph node and the high percentage of occult metastasis. However, the SLN biopsy includes additional anesthesiologic, diagnostic, and surgical procedures, and additional costs. The study aimed to assess the association between clinicopathological variables and SLN status, determining the identification of dogs at lower risk of SLN metastases. Dogs with integumentary MCT were admitted to the lymphoscintigraphic mapping and subsequent biopsy of SLN. The association between clinicopathological variables of MCT and SLN status was statistically tested, both considering occult and overt metastasis together (HN2-HN3) and overt metastasis (HN3) alone. Fifty low-grade cutaneous MCT and 16 subcutaneous MCT were included. A small to moderate association between integumentary MCT ≥ 3 cm and HN2-HN3 SLN was found. A strong association of integumentary MCT dimension and subcutaneous MCT with HN3 SLN occurred. Dimension of low-grade cutaneous and subcutaneous MCT seems to correlate with SLN status, but additional study should confirm this data before excluding small MCT to the SLN biopsy. On the contrary, the study results induce a solid suggestion for mapping and biopsy of the SLN in MCT > 3 cm and subcutaneous MCT.

Resumo

Aim: Veterinarians have frequently to deal with wounds to the skin, subcutis, and underlying muscle. The aim was to explore the application of hyaluronic acid (HA)-containing dressing on open skin wounds in dogs. The progress of healing was assessed by wound area reduction and two scoring scales applied in human medicine. Materials and Methods: Ten client-owned dogs with 12 cutaneous open wounds healed by the second intention were included. All wounds were treated using available in commerce HA-containing wound dressing from admission to complete re-epithelialization. At every clinical examination, wound area and scale scoring assessments were performed. Results: After debridement, an increased wound size was obtained while an improvement was determined by both grading systems. The median numbers of return to the clinic for bandage change were 5 times. The median time to complete wound healing was 34.5 days. The mean wound area at day 7, 14, 21, and 28 were, respectively, 90.4%, 47.7%, 22.4%, and 14.8% of the original size (for linear measurement) and 95.5%, 54.4%, 23.10%, and 14.8% of the original size (for software measurement). Regarding wound healing assessment tools, the agreement between two operators was considered high for both scales. Conclusions: HA-containing dressing may be a possible wound treatment for cutaneous open wounds in dogs. The assessment of wound quality using scale scoring system could be useful especially in the 1st week and to direct clinical decision-making process.

Feminist thought is a constitutive part of political thought and its history. It is both a method of inquiry, a voice and a stance on the world, a claim of women’s political centrality, and a paradoxical critique of modern political and philosophical thought. As unexpected objection, feminist discourse constantly stretches the borders of the political canon and produces critical political theory, imposing the redefinition of the categories used to interpret the present and the past. Going through six centuries of history, from the reappropriation of tradition in XV century to the tension with neoliberalism in XX century, protofeminist and feminist discourse constitutes in time a constant interruption of the monologue of Western patriarchal civilization, showing its centrality in the production, crisis and redefinition of political and social order. Thus, feminist discourse is an essential source of the history of political thought.

PURPOSE: To analyze emotional reactions related to cataract surgery in two groups of patients (monocular vision - Group 1; binocular vision - Group 2). METHODS: A transversal comparative study was performed using a structured questionnaire from a previous exploratory study before cataract surgery. RESULTS: 206 patients were enrolled in the study, 96 individuals in Group 1 (69.3 ± 10.4 years) and 110 in Group 2 (68.2 ± 10.2 years). A infestação por carrapatos em bovinos é responsável por perdas econômicas significativas à indústria animal em várias regiões brasileiras, incluindo o Rio Grande do Sul. As perdas se devem ao stress, a perdas de peso e a injúrias na pele, bem como aos custos com tratamentos. O uso indiscriminado de carrapaticidas tem contribuído para o aparecimento da resistência genética dos ixodídeos a várias drogas, representando um sério problema no controle de carrapatos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a susceptibilidade das diferentes espécies de campo de Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus aos acaricidas usados nos controles dos parasitas. Para tanto, amostras de carrapato foram coletadas em 42 propriedades localizadas em diferentes municípios do Estado para a realização do teste de imersão de teleóginas (biocarrapaticidograma). A associação do amitraz e do clorpirifós resultou na droga que apresentou maior eficácia em 100% das propriedades testadas (11/11). Associações com cipermethrina-clorpirifós-citronelol foram eficientes nos carrapatos em 61% das propriedades (25/41) e cipermetrina-ethion, em 37% (10/27). A cipermetrina foi eficiente em 20,7% (6/29) e o amitraz, um dos produtos mais utilizados nas propriedades, foi eficiente em 14,2% (6/42) das propriedades. Os resultados demonstraram que muitas drogas utilizadas no controle do R. (B.) microplus no Estado apresentaram baixa eficácia, conforme os resultados dos testes in vitro. A baixa eficácia das drogas provavelmente se deve à resistência genética desenvolvida pelos parasitas devido ao uso indiscriminado dos carrapaticidas a campo.Infestation by ticks is responsible for significant economic losses to the cattle industry in several regions, including Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state. Losses may be derived from animal stress, weight loss and skin damage, as well as from costs with treatment. The indiscriminated use of pesticides against these parasites has resulted in high levels of genetic resistance to several drugs, representing a problem for disease control. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the susceptibility of field specimens of Rhipcephalus (Boophilus) microplus to the acaricides used in the control of the parasite. Female ticks obtained from 42 farms in different counties of RS were submitted to the engorgeted female immersion test, to estimate the resistance of the parasite to the drugs. Amitraz in combination with chlorpyriphos was the most efficient drug, acting effectively in ticks from 100% of the tested farms (11/11). Associations of cypermethrin-chlorpyriphos-citronelol were efficient in ticks from 61% of the farms (25/41) and cypermethrin-ethion in 37% (10/27). Cypermethrin alone was efficient in 20,7% (6/29) and Amitraz. one of the most used products, was efficient in ticks from only 14,2% (6/42) of the farms. These results demonstrate that most drugs used in the control of R. B. microplus in the state present low efficacy, as measured by in vitro tests. The low drug efficacy is probably derived from the genetic resistance developed by the parasites due to the indiscriminated and inadequate use of these acaricides in the field.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the quality of life for persons affected by age-related macular degeneration that results in monocular or binocular legal blindness. METHODS: An analytic transversal study using the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) was performed. Inclusion criteria were persons of both genders, aged more than 50 years old, absence of cataracts, diagnosis of age-related monocular degeneration in at least one eye and the absence of other macular diseases. The control group was paired by sex, age and no ocular disease. RESULTS: Group 1 (monocular legal blindness) was composed of 54 patients (72.22% females and 27.78% males, aged 51 to 87 years old, medium age 74.61 ± 7.27 years); group 2 (binocular legal blindness ) was composed of 54 patients (46.30% females and 53.70% males aged 54 to 87 years old, medium age 75.61 ± 6.34 years). The control group was composed of 40 patients (40% females and 60% males, aged 50 to 81 years old, medium age 65.65 ± 7.56 years). The majority of the scores were statistically significantly higher in group 1 and the control group in relation to group 2 and higher in the control group when compared to group 1. CONCLUSIONS: It was evident that the quality of life of persons with binocular blindness was more limited in relation to persons with monocular blindness. Both groups showed significant impairment in quality of life when compared to normal persons.OBJETIVO: Avaliar a qualidade de vida de portadores de degeneração macular relacionada à idade com cegueira legal monocular e binocular. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado estudo transversal analítico por meio do questionário National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25). Os critérios de inclusão foram: indivíduos de ambos os sexos, idade maior que 50 anos, ausência de catarata, diagnóstico de degeneração macular relacionada à idade avançada em pelo menos um dos olhos, sem outras maculopatias. O Grupo Controle foi pareado por sexo, idade e sem doença ocular. RESULTADOS: O Grupo 1 (cegueira monocular) foi composto por 54 pacientes (72,22% de mulheres e 27,78% de homens, idade entre 51 e 87 anos, média de 74,61 anos ± 7,27 anos); o Grupo 2 (cegueira binocular), por 54 (46,30% de mulheres e 53,70% de homens, idade entre 54 e 87 anos, média de 75,61 anos ± 6,34 anos). O Grupo Controle foi composto por 40 pacientes (40% de mulheres e 60% de homens, idade entre 50 e 81 anos, média de 65,65 anos ± 7,56 anos). A maioria dos escores foi significativamente maior no Grupo 1 e no Controle em relação ao Grupo 2 e maior no Controle comparado ao Grupo 1. CONCLUSÕES: Evidenciou-se que a qualidade de vida de indivíduos com cegueira binocular foi mais limitada em relação aos portadores de cegueira monocular. Quando comparados com indivíduos normais, ambos os grupos tiveram prejuízo na qualidade de vida foi significativo.

ABSTRACT: When a major author engages in writing a book for children, it always turns out to be more than a mere incursion into a less prestigious genre. This paper proposes a reading of Ian McEwan’s The Daydreamer aimed at unveiling its different levels of signification through a study of its paratextual, intertextual, structural, and metafictional components, as well as of its illustrations, in order to show how they synergically contribute to the creation of a dense and most intriguing book capable of throwing new light on our very idea of “children’s literature”. RIASSUNTO: Quando un romanziere famoso decide di scrivere un libro per bambini, la sua esperienza va sempre ben oltre l’incursione in un genere minore. Questo saggio si propone di analizzare The Daydreamer di Ian McEwan studiandone i diversi livelli di significazione attraverso le componenti paratestuali, intertestuali, strutturali e autoreferenziali, nonché l’apparato di illustrazioni, al fine di evidenziare il modo in cui esse contribuiscono sinergicamente alla creazione di un libro denso e accattivante, capace di gettare nuova luce sulla “letteratura infantile” come genere.

Objetivo: Identificar percepções e significados referentes à perda visual de pacientes que apresentavam visão monocular e diagnóstico de catarata, com indicação cirúrgica, por comprometimento visual significativo. Métodos: Desenvolveu-se estudo qualitativo, por meio de entrevistas abertas, com 8 sujeitos identificados por Campanha da Catarata, realizada no Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (HC-FMUSP), em novembro de 2004.Resultados: Dos entrevistados, 4 eram do sexo feminino e 4 do sexo masculino, tendo a idade variado de 38 a 86 anos. Referiram atividades profissionais como responsáveis pela perda visual, apontaram dificuldades para conseguir o atendimento médico, manifestaram desconhecimento e crenças populares em relação ao próprio problema ocular e dificuldades encontradas no cotidiano em decorrência da doença. Conclusões: Foram identificados significados, percepções, sentimentos, reações e experiências relacionados à catarata e à perda visual. A ocorrência da catarata no único olho significou angústia e situação conflituosa relacionadas à perda da independência. A expectativa de voltar a enxergar mediante intervenção cirúrgica prendeu-se ao sentimento de ter uma vida “normal”, de sentir-se útil e do retorno ao mercado de trabalho.
