Certification schemes are a significant focal point for organizations, offering promising avenues for achieving excellence, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainability. However, our understanding of the relationship between organizations and certification schemes remains limited and fragmented. This study addresses this knowledge gap by elucidating the evolution of research on this topic within the categories of business and economics, engineering, and sustainability. We conducted a comprehensive literature synthesis spanning from 1999 to 2022, employing a four-stage PRISMA protocol. The analysis incorporated bibliometric methods to uncover the underlying knowledge structure within the literature. Notably, the Institut National De La Recherche Agronomique in France and the Journal of Cleaner Production emerged as the most productive institutions and journals in this domain. Furthermore, Olivier Boiral stood out as the most co-cited author. Additionally, we identified thirteen distinct research clusters. We propose future research directions based on these clusters, considering the categories of business and economics, engineering, and sustainability. The results enhance the ongoing discussion regarding the worldwide adoption of certification schemes and their viability as strategies to tackle grand challenges, particularly in the context of global environmental change.

We conducted a discrete choice experiment to explore whether providing information about a lesser-known issue related to climate change, ocean acidification (OA), affects consumers’ preferences for seafood products in a middle-income country in the southern hemisphere. Our objective was to determine whether OA information affects consumer preferences for seafood using stated preference (SP) techniques. Seafood attributes include shell size and appearance, meat color, texture, taste, nutritional composition, product assortments, and price. We applied a split-sample approach to test for information effects, with one sample receiving information about OA while the other did not. We analyze the differences between samples using visual instruments and statistical tests. The results demonstrate that although the statistical test does not identify a difference between models, we did find that OA information increases the precision of ’consumers’ responses. Moreover, using visual instruments, we found differences in specific parameters – not detected in the statistical analysis - which can lead to substantial differences in the willingness to pay for seafood attributes. The article is relevant as understanding these matters is essential when generating more effective communicational strategies regarding the impacts of global changes.

ABSTRACTVarious novel platform technologies have been used for the development of COVID-19 vaccines. In this nested cohort study among healthcare workers in Australia and Brazil who received three different COVID-19-specific vaccines, we (a) evaluated the incidence of adverse events following immunization (AEFI); (b) compared AEFI by vaccine type, dose and country; (c) identified factors influencing the incidence of AEFI; and (d) assessed the association between reactogenicity and vaccine anti-spike IgG antibody responses. Of 1302 participants who received homologous 2-dose regimens of ChAdOx1-S (Oxford-AstraZeneca), BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) or CoronaVac (Sinovac), 1219 (94%) completed vaccine reaction questionnaires. Following the first vaccine dose, the incidence of any systemic reaction was higher in ChAdOx1-S recipients (374/806, 46%) compared with BNT162b2 (55/151, 36%; p = 0.02) or CoronaVac (26/262, 10%; p

El aprendizaje de programación de computadoras se ha convertido en una habilidad esencial en la era digital, presentando desafíos y oportunidades significativas para los estudiantes. Este estudio examinó el nivel de motivación y autoeficacia percibida como factores en el aprendizaje inicial de programación de computadoras y su posible correlación con el rendimiento académico de estudiantes de Ciencia de Cómputos en una Universidad de Puerto Rico. El enfoque fue cuantitativo, utilizando un diseño de investigación por encuesta (transversal), con un cuestionario autoadministrado en línea. Se recopilaron evidencias de validez relacionadas con el contenido, proceso de respuesta y estructura interna, y se empleó un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia. Los datos fueron procesados con el paquete estadístico SPSS. Los resultados mostraron una correlación de Spearman positiva significativa entre los ítems de las subescalas de autoeficacia y motivación con el rendimiento académico informado por los participantes en el curso de fundamentos de la programación. El estudio concluyó que la autoeficacia y la motivación de los aprendices de programación inciden favorablemente en el rendimiento académico, contribuyendo al desarrollo de habilidades de pensamiento superior como la resolución de problemas y la creatividad, destacándose como factores fundamentales en el aprendizaje inicial de la programación de computadoras.

Abstract The need for the identification of risk factors associated to COVID-19 disease severity remains urgent. Patients’ care and resource allocation can be potentially different and are defined based on the current classification of disease severity. This classification is based on the analysis of clinical parameters and routine blood tests, which are not standardized across the globe. Some laboratory test alterations have been associated to COVID-19 severity, although these data are conflicting partly due to the different methodologies used across different studies. This study aimed to construct and validate a disease severity prediction model using machine learning (ML). Seventy-two patients admitted to a Brazilian hospital and diagnosed with COVID-19 through RT-PCR and/or ELISA, and with varying degrees of disease severity, were included in the study. Their electronic medical records and the results from daily blood tests were used to develop a ML model to predict disease severity. Using the above data set, a combination of five laboratorial biomarkers was identified as accurate predictors of COVID-19 severe disease with a ROC-AUC of 0.80 ± 0.13. Those biomarkers included prothrombin activity, ferritin, serum iron, ATTP and monocytes. The application of the devised ML model may help rationalize clinical decision and care.

Summary: Background: The emergence of COVID-19 variants with immune scape and the waning of primary vaccine schemes effectiveness have prompted many countries to indicate first and second booster COVID-19 vaccine doses to prevent severe COVID-19. However, current available evidence on second booster dose effectiveness are mostly limited to high-income countries, older adults, and mRNA-based vaccination schemes scenarios. We aimed to investigate the relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of the fourth dose compared to three doses for severe COVID-19 outcomes in Brazil; and compare the rVE of a fourth dose with an mRNA vaccine compared to adenovirus-based product in the same settings. Methods: We performed a target emulated trial using a population-based cohort of individuals aged 40 years or older who have received a homologous primary scheme of CoronaVac, ChAdOx1, or BNT162b2, and any third dose product and were eligible for the fourth dose in Brazil. The primary outcome was COVID-19 associated hospitalization or death. We built Cohort A matching individuals vaccinated with a fourth dose to individuals who received three doses to estimate the rVE of the fourth dose. We built Cohort B, a subset of Cohort A, matching mRNA-based (mRNA) to adenovirus-based fourth dose vaccinated individuals to compare their relative hazards for severe COVID-19. Findings: 46,693,484 individuals were included in Cohort A and 6,763,016 in Cohort B. 45% of them were aged between 40 and 60 years old, and 48% between 60 and 79 years old. In Cohort A, the most common previous series was a ChAdOx1 two-dose followed by BNT162b2 (44%), and a CoronaVac two-dose followed by a BNT162b2 (36%). Among those fourth dose vaccinated, 36.9% received ChAdOx1, 32.7% Ad26.COV2.S, 25.8% BNT162b2, and 4.7% CoronaVac. In Cohort B, among those who received an adenovirus fourth dose, 53.7% received ChAdOx1 and 46.3% received Ad26.COV2.S. The estimated rVE for the primary outcome of four doses compared to three doses was 44.1% (95% CI 42.3–46.0), with some waning during follow-up (rVE 7–60 days 46.8% [95% CI 44.4–49.1], rVE after 120 days 33.8% [95% CI 18.0–46.6]). Among fourth dose vaccinated individuals, mRNA-based vaccinated individuals had lower hazards for hospitalization or death compared to adenovirus-vaccinated individuals (HR 0.81, 95% CI 0.75–0.87). After 120 days, no difference in hazards between groups was observed (HR 1.35, 95% CI 0.93–1.97). Similar findings were observed for hospitalization and death separately, except no evidence for differences between fourth dose brands for death in Cohort B. Interpretation: In a heterogeneous scenario of primary and first booster vaccination combinations, a fourth dose provided meaningful and durable protection against severe COVID-19 outcomes. Compared to adenovirus-based booster, a fourth dose wild-type mRNA vaccine was associated with immediate lower hazards of hospitalization or death unsustained after 120 days. Funding: None.

In recent decades, interest has been aroused worldwide in the use of silicon in nutrition; however, information on its effect on nutrition and metabolism of fish is limited. The objective of the research was to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with organic silicon on the growth performance, blood biochemistry, digestive enzymes, morphohistology and intestinal microbiota and stress resistance in hybrid Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus × Oreochromis niloticus). Methodologically, six levels of organic silicon (DOS) [control (0), 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mg·kg−1] were used to feed juvenile fish (initial weight 7.51 ± 0.25 g) grown for eight weeks in 18 aquariums (15 fish/aquarium). The results indicated that growth performance showed differences (p < 0.05) for specific growth rate, feed conversion and survival. Triglycerides, cholesterol and glucose, transaminases and digestive enzymes were significantly influenced by DOS levels. The histological study confirmed that the administered diets did not cause damage and induced significant morphological changes in the proximal intestine. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis of the gut microbiota showed a high diversity and richness of OTU/Chao-1, with Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Acidobacteria predominating in the DOS treatments compared to the control (p < 0.05). Induction of hypoxia stress after the feeding period showed a significant relative survival rate of 83.33% in fish fed 50 mg·kg−1. It is concluded that the DOS treatments performed better than the control treatment in most of the variables analysed. DOS had no negative effects on the fish. The results showed that up to 50 mg·kg−1 DOS improved digestive, metabolic and growth performance in hybrid Tilapia.

Alginate/gelatin (Alg-Gel) hydrogels have been used experimentally, associated with mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs), to guide bone tissue formation. One of the main challenges for clinical application is optimizing Alg-Gel stiffness to guide osteogenesis. In this study, we investigated how Alg-Gel stiffness could modulate the dental pulp stem cell (DPSC) attachment, morphology, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation, identifying the optimal conditions to uncouple osteogenesis from the other cell behaviors. An array of Alg-Gel hydrogels was prepared by casting different percentages of alginate and gelatin cross-linked with 2% CaCl2. We have selected two hydrogels: one with a stiffness of 11 ± 1 kPa, referred to as “low-stiffness hydrogel”, formed by 2% alginate and 8% gelatin, and the other with a stiffness of 55 ± 3 kPa, referred to as “high-stiffness hydrogel”, formed by 8% alginate and 12% gelatin. Hydrogel analyses showed that the average swelling rates were 20 ± 3% for the low-stiffness hydrogels and 35 ± 2% for the high-stiffness hydrogels. The degradation percentage was 47 ± 5% and 18 ± 2% for the low- and high-stiffness hydrogels, respectively. Both hydrogel types showed homogeneous surface shape and protein (Alg-Gel) interaction with CaCl2 as assessed by physicochemical characterization. Cell culture showed good adhesion of the DPSCs to the hydrogels and proliferation. Furthermore, better osteogenic activity, determined by ALP activity and ARS staining, was obtained with high-stiffness hydrogels (8% alginate and 12% gelatin). In summary, this study confirms the possibility of characterizing and optimizing the stiffness of Alg-Gel gel to guide osteogenesis in vitro without altering the other cellular properties of DPSCs.

ABSTRACT Objective: To report outcomes from the largest multicenter series of penile cancer patients undergoing video endoscopic inguinal lymphadenectomy (VEIL). Materials and Methods: Retrospective multicenter analysis. Authors of 21 centers from the Penile Cancer Collaborative Coalition-Latin America (PeC-LA) were included. All centers performed the procedure following the same previously described standardized technique. Inclusion criteria included penile cancer patients with no palpable lymph nodes and intermediate/high-risk disease and those with non-fixed palpable lymph nodes less than 4 cm in diameter. Categorical variables are shown as percentages and frequencies whereas continuous variables as mean and range. Results: From 2006 to 2020, 210 VEIL procedures were performed in 105 patients. Mean age was 58 (45-68) years old. Mean operative time was 90 minutes (60-120). Mean lymph node yield was 10 nodes (6-16). Complication rate was 15.7%, including severe complications in 1.9% of procedures. Lymphatic and skin complications were noted in 8.6 and 4.8% of patients, respectively. Histopathological analysis revealed lymph node involvement in 26.7% of patients with non-palpable nodes. Inguinal recurrence was observed in 2.8% of patients. 10y- overall survival was 74.2% and 10-y cancer specific survival was 84.8%. CSS for pN0, pN1, pN2 and pN3 were 100%, 82.4%, 72.7% and 9.1%, respectively. Conclusion: VEIL seems to offer appropriate long term oncological control with minimal morbidity. In the absence of non-invasive stratification measures such as dynamic sentinel node biopsy, VEIL emerged as the alternative for the management of non-bulky lymph nodes in penile cancer.

Según la NOAA, los resultados de una valoración económica son aplicables como política pública si cumplen dos condiciones: racionalidad y plausibilidad. En el presente estudio, se realiza la valoración económica de conservar la biodiversidad del Parque Nacional del Manu en Perú (país megabiodiverso), a partir de tres representaciones: especies, hábitat y funcionalidad. Se identificó la presencia de sensibilidad al alcance en la mayor parte de atributos empleados. Al incluir características socioeconómicas se identificó que el género y los niveles salariales afectan las preferencias. Los resultados muestran que las especies de flora amenazada y la funcionalidad cumplen con ambas condiciones.

Summary: Background: Recurrences of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in the orofacial region (herpes labialis or cold sores) impact quality-of-life. We aimed to study whether the bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine can attenuate cold sore recurrences through off-target immunomodulatory effects. Methods: In this nested randomised controlled trial within the multicentre, phase 3 BRACE trial, 6828 healthcare workers were randomised in 36 sites in Australia, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and Brazil, to receive BCG-Denmark or no BCG (1:1 ratio using a web-based procedure) and followed for 12 months with 3-monthly questionnaires. Exclusion criteria included contraindication to BCG vaccine or previous vaccination with BCG within the past year, any other live-attenuated vaccine within the last month, or any COVID-specific vaccine. The intervention group received one intradermal dose of 0.1 mL of BCG-Denmark corresponding to 2−8 x 105 colony forming units of Mycobacterium bovis, Danish strain 1331. The primary outcome was the difference in restricted mean survival time (i.e., time to first cold-sore recurrence), in participants with frequent recurrent herpes labialis (≥4 recurrences/year), analysed by intention-to-treat. Secondary outcomes addressed additional questions, including analyses in other sub-populations. Adverse events were monitored closely during the first 3 months and were reported in all participants who received one dose of study drug according to intervention received. The BRACE trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04327206. Findings: Between March 30, 2020 and February 18, 2021, 84 individuals with frequent recurrent cold sores were randomly assigned to BCG (n = 38) or control (n = 46). The average time to first cold-sore recurrence was 1.55 months longer in the BCG group (95% CI 0.27–2.82, p = 0.02) than the control group (hazard ratio 0.54, 95% CI 0.32–0.91; intention-to-treat). The beneficial effect of BCG was greater in the as-treated population (difference 1.91 months, 95% CI 0.69–3.12, p = 0.003; hazard ratio 0.45, 95% CI 0.26–0.76). In prespecified subgroup analyses, only sex modified the treatment effect (interaction p = 0.007), with benefit restricted to males. Over 12 months, a greater proportion of participants in the BCG group compared with the control group reported a decrease in duration (61% vs 21%), severity (74% vs 21%), frequency (55% vs 21%), and impact on quality of life (42% vs 15%) of cold sore recurrences. In participants who had ever had a cold sore, there was also a decrease in self-reported burden of recurrences in the BCG group. In participants who had never had a cold sore, there was an increased risk of a first episode in the BCG group (risk difference 1.4%; 95% CI 0.3–2.6%, p = 0.02). There were no safety concerns. Interpretation: BCG-Denmark vaccination had a beneficial effect on herpes labialis, particularly in males with frequent recurrences, but may increase the risk of a first cold sore. Comparison between the performance of female and male-managed firms has long been a subject of research interest. Although the argument is that firms run by women have lower performance than those run by men, there is no agreement on the effects of managerial gender on companies’ financial outcomes. This study conducts a methodological review of quantitative research on the relationship between female business leadership and firm performance from 2010 to 2020. This review identifies the most frequently used dependent and explanatory variables and econometric models in the literature. Most studies have not considered endogeneity bias in their model specifications; therefore, these results could be biased and unreliable. We select empirical models to test the female underperformance hypothesis using a sample of Chilean firms. Our findings suggest that managers’ gender does not significantly affect business performance when endogeneity is addressed. Our methodological review reveals a significant gap in the research on female managers and firm performance in the Latin American context, and the empirical test provides new evidence in this vein.

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neuropsychiatric disease affecting many elderly people and is characterized by progressive cognitive impairment of memory, visuospatial, and executive functions. As the elderly population is growing, the number of AD patients is increasing considerably. There is currently growing interest in determining AD’s cognitive dysfunction markers. We used exact low-resolution-brain-electromagnetic-tomography independent-component-analysis (eLORETA-ICA) to assess activities of five electroencephalography resting-state-networks (EEG-RSNs) in 90 drug-free AD patients and 11 drug-free patients with mild-cognitive-impairment due to AD (ADMCI). Compared to 147 healthy subjects, the AD/ADMCI patients showed significantly decreased activities in the memory network and occipital alpha activity, where the age difference between the AD/ADMCI and healthy groups was corrected by linear regression analysis. Furthermore, the age-corrected EEG-RSN activities showed correlations with cognitive function test scores in AD/ADMCI. In particular, decreased memory network activity showed correlations with worse total cognitive scores for both Mini-Mental-State-Examination (MMSE) and Alzheimer’s Disease-Assessment-Scale-cognitive-component-Japanese version (ADAS-J cog) including worse sub-scores for orientation, registration, repetition, word recognition and ideational praxis. Our results indicate that AD affects specific EEG-RSNs and deteriorated network activity causes symptoms. Overall, eLORETA-ICA is a useful, non-invasive tool for assessing EEG-functional-network activities and provides better understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the disease.

Antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 are central to recovery and immunity from COVID-19. However, the relationship between disease severity and the repertoire of antibodies against specific SARS-CoV-2 epitopes an individual develops following exposure remains incompletely understood. Here, we studied seroprevalence of antibodies to specific SARS-CoV-2 and other betacoronavirus antigens in a well-annotated, community sample of convalescent and never-infected individuals obtained in August 2020. One hundred and twenty-four participants were classified into five groups: previously exposed but without evidence of infection, having no known exposure or evidence of infection, seroconverted without symptoms, previously diagnosed with symptomatic COVID-19, and recovered after hospitalization with COVID-19. Prevalence of IgGs specific to the following antigens was compared between the five groups: recombinant SARS-CoV-2 and betacoronavirus spike and nucleocapsid protein domains, peptides from a tiled array of 22-mers corresponding to the entire spike and nucleocapsid proteins, and peptides corresponding to predicted immunogenic regions from other proteins of SARS-CoV-2. Antibody abundance generally correlated positively with severity of prior illness. A number of specific immunogenic peptides and some that may be associated with milder illness or protection from symptomatic infection were identified. No convincing association was observed between antibodies to Receptor Binding Domain(s) (RBDs) of less pathogenic betacoronaviruses HKU1 or OC43 and COVID-19 severity. However, apparent cross-reaction with SARS-CoV RBD was evident and some predominantly asymptomatic individuals had antibodies to both MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV RBDs. Findings from this pilot study may inform development of diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutic antibodies, and provide insight into viral pathogenic mechanisms.

This study investigates the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccine boosters following a primary series of CoronaVac vaccination. Using data from Brazil during the Omicron wave, the authors show that boosters provided protection against severe disease, with higher effectiveness from a BNT162b2 than CoronaVac booster.

Multiple factors, including vaccine platform and prior vaccinations, influence vaccine responses. We compared antibody responses to CoronaVac (Sinovac) and ChAdOx1-S (AstraZeneca-Oxford) vaccination in 874 healthcare workers in Brazil. As participants were randomised to BCG vaccination or placebo in the preceding 0-6 months as part of the BCG vaccination to reduce the impact of COVID-19 in healthcare workers (BRACE) trial, we also investigated the influence of recent BCG vaccination on antibody responses to these COVID-19 vaccines. Twenty-eight days after the second dose of each vaccine, ChAdOx1-S induced a stronger anti-spike IgG response than CoronaVac vaccination. Recent BCG vaccination did not impact IgG antibody responses to ChAdOx1-S or CoronaVac.

14-3-3 proteins play critical roles in controlling multiple aspects of the cellular response to stress and DNA damage including regulation of metabolism, cell cycle progression, cell migration, and apoptotic cell death by binding to protein substrates of basophilic protein kinases following their phosphorylation on specific serine/threonine residues. Although over 200 mammalian proteins that bind to 14-3-3 have been identified, largely through proteomic studies, in many cases the relevant protein kinase responsible for conferring 14-3-3-binding to these proteins is not known. To facilitate the identification of kinase-specific 14-3-3 clients, we developed a biochemical approach using high-density protein filter arrays and identified the translational regulatory molecule PABPC1 as a substrate for Chk1 and MAPKAP Kinase-2 (MK2) in vitro, and for MK2 in vivo, whose phosphorylation results in 14-3-3-binding. We identify Ser-470 on PABPC1 within the linker region connecting the RRM domains to the PABC domain as the critical 14-3-3-binding site, and demonstrate that loss of PABPC1 binding to 14-3-3 results in increased cell proliferation and decreased cell death in response to UV-induced DNA damage.

Abstract Motility is an indicator of sperm cell viability due to higher probability in swimming through the female reproductive tract and undergo fertilization with the egg cell. Centrifugation method is a technique to process high volume semen and isolate motile sperm cells but decreases the biochemical integrity of spermatozoa due to the contact with reactive oxygen species (ROS) from dead cells released during centrifugation. This study uses solution electrospun poly(ε-caprolactone) membranes as an alternative in isolating motile spermatozoa by utilizing a rationally designed 3D printed module set up, providing the same benefits as commercially available techniques with minimal processing time, and bypassing the centrifugation step to provide higher quality sperm cells. The membranes, with nominal pore size distributions ranging from 5 to 6 µm are highly porous structures suitable for establishing baseline data for sperm cell sorting by motility. The proposed method allows for isolation of motile sperm cells with 74% purity, while decreasing the processing time by 98% when compared to centrifugation techniques. This novel approach provides a facile method for isolating motile spermatozoa directly from frozen semen samples without any pretreatments and is easily scalable for small and medium scale farms as well as larger industries.

Electron removal (target ionization and/or projectile electron loss) in neutral–atom collisions is theoretically studied for the impact of H0, He0 and He+ beams on noble gases (He, Ne and Ar). These reactions are investigated theoretically within the Continuum Distorted Wave-Eikonal Initial State model. New features have been included in the theoretical model: (i) a scaled projectile charge depending on its velocity and charge, (ii) a dynamic projectile-effective-charge depending on the momentum transfer, and (iii) a dynamic target-effective-charge depending on the kinematics of the emitted electron. The energy and angular spectra of emitted electrons from the target and from the projectile are calculated and compared with the available experimental data. Also, the influence of each one of the corrections on the resulting spectra will be studied.

Abstract This study aimed at comparing the prevalence of abnormal blood pressure (BP) phenotypes among 241 adolescents referred for hypertension (15.4 ± 1.4 years, 62% males, 40% obese) according to mostly used or available criteria for hypertension [AAP or ESH criteria for high office BP (OBP); Arsakeion or Goiânia schools’ criteria for high home BP monitoring (HBPM)]. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have antimicrobial and antifungal activity. SeNPs using Se resistant bacteria is a low cost and eco-friendly technology. Fungal contamination of wood during drying is one of the main causes of economic losses in the wood industry. The bacterium Delftia sp. 5 resistance to Se and its ability to produce SeNPs able to inhibit the growth of the wood brown-rotting fungus Oligoporus pelliculosus was analyzed. The strain showed an optimal SeNPs production when selenite concentration was 160 mg L−1. The SeNPs were spherical with an average size 192.33 ± 8.6 nm and a zeta potential of -41.4 ± 1.3 nm. The SeNPs produced by Delftia sp. 5 (33.6 ± 0.1 mg L−1 Se) inhibited the growth of O. pelliculosus in agar plates and in Nothofagus pumilio (Lenga) wood samples. Delftia sp. 5 SeNPs could be used for embedding lenga wood prior to drying for preventing the growth of the deteriorating fungi O. pelliculosus.

Metabolic diseases and low-grade chronic inflammation are interconnected: obese persons are at higher risk of developing periodontitis. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in the development and progression of periodontitis in an obesogenic microenvironment in response to periodontopathogens are still lacking. This study aims to investigate the combined effects of palmitate and Porphyromonas gingivalis on the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and on transcriptional landscape modifications in macrophage-like cells. U937 macrophage-like cells were treated with palmitate and stimulated with P. gingivalis for 24h. Cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 were measured by ELISA in the culture medium and cell extracted RNA was submitted to a microarray analysis followed by Gene Ontology analyses. P. gingivalis, in presence of palmitate, potentiated IL-1β and TNF-α secretion in comparison to palmitate alone. Gene Ontology analyses also revealed that the combination palmitate-P. gingivalis potentiated the number of gene molecular functions implicated in the regulation of immune and inflammatory pathways compared to macrophages treated with palmitate alone. Our results provide the first comprehensive mapping of gene interconnections between palmitate and P. gingivalis during inflammatory responses in macrophage-like cells. These data highlight the importance of considering systemic conditions, specifically obesogenic microenvironment, in the management of periodontal disease in obese patients.

Undiagnosed concussions increase the risk of additional concussion and persistent symptoms from concussion. Because there are no reliable objective markers of concussion, self-reporting of subjective and non-visible symptoms are critical to ensuring proper concussion management. For this reason, educational interventions target concussion reporting, but the majority of studies have examined the efficacy of single educational interventions or compared interventions to one another. This randomized crossover study sought to identify whether there was benefit to administering multiple concussion education programs in tandem, back to back. The study randomized 313 male high school football players to first receive CrashCourse concussion education (CC) or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention video concussion education (CDC) followed by crossover with the other education. Athlete concussion-reporting intention, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and enjoyment of education were assessed at baseline and after each intervention. There were statistically significant improvements across all measures, both after single intervention and crossover (all p?0.001). Abstract Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have revealed the capability to augment various types of behavioural interventions. We aimed to augment the effects of mindfulness, suggested for reducing anxiety, with concurrent use of tDCS. We conducted a double-blind randomized study with 58 healthy individuals. We introduced treadmill walking for focused meditation and active or sham tDCS on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for 20 min. We evaluated outcomes using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-State Anxiety (STAI) before the intervention as well as immediately, 60 min, and 1 week after the intervention, and current density from electroencephalograms (EEG) before and after the intervention. The linear mixed-effect models demonstrated that STAI-state anxiety showed a significant interaction effect between 1 week after the intervention and tDCS groups. As for alpha-band EEG activity, the current density in the rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC) was significantly reduced in the active compared with the sham stimulation group, and a significant correlation was seen between changes in STAI-trait anxiety and the current density of the rACC in the active stimulation group. Our study provided that despite this being a one-shot and short intervention, the reduction in anxiety lasts for one week, and EEG could potentially help predict its anxiolytic effect.

Independientemente de la metodología de diseño los ingenieros de software deben satisfacer las necesidades del usuario en una interfaz que sea eficiente y amigable en el entendido de que no todos los usuarios son nativos digitales o su interacción con las tecnologías es mínima, cuando no nula. El artículo presentado es una investigación documental sobre los requerimientos de software y las características de accesibilidad, facilidad de uso y seguridad que representa para el usuario en salud, trabajo y educación como fenómenos sociales relativos a todos los ciudadanos. La principal conclusión es el estado panameño debe invertir en el desarrollo de la infraestructura digital de soporte como política de Estado para que los sistemas de información cumplan con su rol con eficiencia.

Brain aging causes loss of synaptic spines, neuronal apoptosis, and a reduction in neurotransmitter levels. These aging phenomena disturb cortical electrical activity and its synchronization with connected regions. Previous electroencephalography (EEG) studies reported an age-related decrease in electrical activity in the alpha frequency band at occipital, parietal, and temporal areas as well as a decrease in occipital delta activity. However, there is an ongoing debate about whether there is an increase or decrease of the activity in other frequency bands with aging due to inconsistent study findings. In this study, we aimed to detect age-related changes of cortical electrical activities in all five frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma) in a large sample of healthy subjects for the first time. Using eLORETA (exact low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography) analysis, we applied an eLORETA source estimation method to resting-state EEG data in 147 healthy subjects (median age 55, IQR 26.5–67.0) to obtain cortical electrical activity and assessed age-related changes in this activity using correlation analysis with multiple comparison correction. The combination of the eLORETA source estimation method and correlation analysis implemented in eLORETA software detected age-related changes in specific cortical regions for each frequency band: (1) delta and theta cortical electrical activities decreased at the occipital area with age, (2) alpha cortical electrical activity decreased at the occipitoparietotemporal areas with age, (3) beta cortical electrical activity increased at the insula, sensorimotor area, supplementary motor area, premotor area, and right temporal areas with age (most significant correlation at the right insula), (4) gamma cortical electrical activity increased at the frontoparietal and left temporal areas with age. These findings extend previous EEG study findings and provide valuable information related to mechanisms of healthy aging. Overall, our findings revealed that even healthy aging greatly affects cortical electrical activities in a region-specific way.

La actual pandemia SARS-CoV-2 ha cambiado nuestra manera de trabajar y relacionarnos. Fue notificada en Wuhan, provincia de Hubei, en China, en diciembre de 2019. Habían existido dos brotes previos importantes de Coronavirus: el SARS, en 2002-2003 y el MERS, en 2012. Este artículo pretende ser una breve revisión acerca de algunos aspectos de la infección COVID-19 desde los aspectos fisiopatológicos, hallazgos por imagen y de las principales indicaciones de las pruebas de imagen, si bien estas siempre serán individualizadas. Tampoco podemos dejar de lado la posibilidad de que algunos de estos pacientes presente una evolución a fibrosis pulmonar. Finalmente, mencionaremos algunas recomendaciones para protegernos en nuestro puesto de trabajo.

Abstract This study investigated the impact of changing abnormal home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) cutoff from 135/85 to 130/80 mmHg on the prevalence of hypertension phenotypes, considering an abnormal office blood pressure cutoff of 140/90 mmHg. We evaluated 57 768 individuals (26 876 untreated and 30 892 treated with antihypertensive medications) from 719 Brazilian centers who performed HBPM. Changing the HBPM cutoff was associated with increases in masked (from 10% to 22%) and sustained (from 27% to 35%) hypertension, and decreases in white‐coat hypertension (from 16% to 7%) and normotension (from 47% to 36%) among untreated participants, and increases in masked (from 11% to 22%) and sustained (from 29% to 36%) uncontrolled hypertension, and decreases in white‐coat uncontrolled hypertension (from 15% to 8%) and controlled hypertension (from 45% to 34%) among treated participants. In conclusion, adoption of an abnormal HBPM cutoff of 130/80 mmHg markedly increased the prevalence of out‐of‐office hypertension and uncontrolled hypertension phenotypes.

Dynamic and vibration difficulties have begun to play a major part in structural analysis as a result of the increasing complexity and slimness of bridges. Nonetheless, creating numerical models that accurately capture the true behaviour of structures remains a challenge. It can be caused by the lack of references that characterise the dynamic and vibration properties of the material. For that reason, the main goal of this work is to investigate experimental methods to characterise materials that are commonly used to build reduced scale physical models. We tested four types of materials in order to achieve this goal, as well as evaluating the major influence of reinforcement on the material’s elastic stiffness. That presents a novel approach to support engineers to suitably select scaled physical models materials. In addition to identifying the basic static properties of the studied materials, material damping and material relaxation were also characterised through the following: General logarithmic decrement method, Half-power band, modal damping and random decrement. In order to evaluate the material damping, we analysed the acceleration and displacement of cantilever specimens using a data acquisition module. As a result, the confidence level of each approach in contrast to the experimental data could be determined. Finally, the material behaviour of each material was examined in order to determine the best material for producing reduced scaled models of reinforced concrete bridges. As a result, it was easy to see that modal damping indicates higher confidence, whereas logarithmic decrement indicates lower confidence. It is also important to keep in mind that most methods for determining damping ratios are based on viscous damping. As a result, non-linear regression and modal damping were deemed the best methods for characterising vibration and dynamic responses of materials.

Los modelos de agricultura familiar, han sido utilizados para analizar ex-ante diferentes políticas; sin embargo, se desconoce el estado del arte con relación a la evaluación de la biodiversidad dentro de estos modelos. Por esta razón, se desarrolló una revisión sistemática de modelos de agricultura familiar que integren la variable “biodiversidad”. Para tal efecto, se consultaron buscadores especializa-dos, aplicando una estrategia de búsqueda genérica, que permitió identificar 1420 artículos, de los cuales solo 23 fueron seleccionados en base a criterios de inclusión específicos. Se evidencia un vacío en la evaluación de la biodiversidad dentro de los modelos de agricultura familiar.

Aim of study: To demonstrate the virulence of a Mycobacterium bovis local pig isolate in order to contribute to a better understanding of the pathological and immunological consequences of M. bovis infection in previous sensitized animals. Area of study: Buenos Aires, Argentina Material and methods: One group of ten pigs received two oral doses of killed M. bovis suspension and a comparative intradermal tuberculin test (CIT) (multiple sensitized) and then was infected with the M. bovis strain. Another group only received the CIT (single sensitized) and the infective dose. Humoral immune response was followed monthly, and gross pathology, histopathological and bacteriological analysis were performed at necropsy 100 days after infection. Main results: M. bovis oral infection induced lesions and allowed bacterial growth in most of the animals. Previous sensitization with killed M. bovis suspension slightly raised the intensity of the response, as the multiple sensitized group showed higher lesion scores and humoral response. Research highlights: Although the differences in lesion scores were not statistically significant, oral route infection after sensitization can modify the course of infections towards a fast development of lesions with a higher fibrotic component suggestive of increased resistance to infection in the right conditions.

We report measurements of double differential cross section for zero-degree binary encounter electrons emitted in collisions of 4.9 MeV and 13 MeV B(2−5)+ ions with H2 targets. The corresponding calculations based on continuum distorted-wave (CDW) theories are critically compared to the measurements. CDW in its post form exhibits a very good agreement with the measurements in all cases. The CDW theories utilized along with the well-known eikonal-initial-state (CDW-EIS) approximation are also examined and their results are compared to both the measurements and the CDW calculations. In particular, CDW-EIS using a recently proposed dynamic effective charge for the final channel projectile distortion exhibits a substantial improvement in comparison with an effective net-charge approximation.

Objective: Neurophysiological changes related to meditation have recently attracted scientific attention. We aimed to detect changes in electroencephalography (EEG) parameters induced by a meditative intervention in subjects with post-traumatic residual disability (PTRD), which has been confirmed for effectiveness and safety in a previous study. This will allow us to estimate the objective effect of this intervention at the neurophysiological level. Methods: Ten subjects with PTRD were recruited and underwent psychological assessment and EEG recordings before and after the meditative intervention. Furthermore, 10 additional subjects were recruited as normal controls. Source current density as an EEG parameter was estimated by exact Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (eLORETA). Comparisons of source current density in PTRD subjects after the meditative intervention with normal controls were investigated. Additionally, we compared source current density in PTRD subjects between before and after meditative intervention. Correlations between psychological assessments and source current density were also explored. Results: After meditative intervention, PTRD subjects exhibited increased gamma activity in the left inferior parietal lobule relative to normal controls. In addition, changes of delta activity in the right precuneus correlated with changes in the psychological score on role physical item, one of the quality of life scales reflecting the work or daily difficulty due to physical problems. Conclusions: These results show that the meditative intervention used in this study produces neurophysiological changes, in particular the modulation of oscillatory activity of the brain. Significance: Our meditative interventions might induce the neurophysiological changes associated with the improvement of psychological symptoms in the PTRD subjects. Huntington’s disease (HD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by GAG expansion in exon 1 of the huntingtin (HTT) gene. AAV5-miHTT is an adeno-associated virus serotype 5-based vector expressing an engineered HTT-targeting microRNA (miHTT). Preclinical studies demonstrate the brain-wide spread of AAV5-miHTT following a single intrastriatal injection, which is partly mediated by neuronal transport. miHTT has been previously associated with extracellular vesicles (EVs), but whether EVs mediate the intercellular transmission of miHTT remains unknown. A contactless culture system was used to evaluate the transport of miHTT, either from a donor cell line overexpressing miHTT or AAV5-miHTT transduced neurons. Transfer of miHTT to recipient (HEK-293T, HeLa, and HD patient-derived neurons) cells was observed, which significantly reduced HTT mRNA levels. miHTT was present in EV-enriched fractions isolated from culture media. Immunocytochemical and in situ hybridization experiments showed that the signal for miHTT and EV markers co-localized, confirming the transport of miHTT within EVs. In summary, we provide evidence that an engineered miRNA—miHTT—is loaded into EVs, transported across extracellular space, and taken up by neighboring cells, and importantly, that miHTT is active in recipient cells downregulating HTT expression. This represents an additional mechanism contributing to the widespread biodistribution of AAV5-miHTT.

The Internet has become the ultimate platform for convergence, closely associated with network, technology, and media, due to its open and nondiscriminatory architecture. Convergence in telecommunications is propelled by ideas, ideologies, and policies progressively and cyclically, bringing further technological advancement, market, business, and policy changes. As a response to convergence, net neutrality seeks to regulate the relationship between Internet service providers and users to avoid discriminatory practices and ensure the openness of the Internet as a platform for innovation, economic development, and access to information for all. The objective of this work is to analyze the development of convergence in the telecommunications sector and the progress of net neutrality policies in South America, with five specific cases using a qualitative empirical approach. Within the findings, we identify different approaches for legislating net neutrality, controversies concerning the levels of commitment to the principles, ambiguity for effective enforcement of the rules, and commercial arrangements that in practice violate net neutrality.

Undiagnosed concussions increase risk of additional injuries and can prolong recovery. Because of the difficulties recognizing concussive symptoms, concussion education must specifically target improving athlete concussion reporting. Many concussion education programs are designed without significant input from athletes, resulting in a less enjoyable athlete experience, with potential implications on program efficacy. Athlete enjoyment of previous concussion education programs moderates the improvement in concussion-reporting intention after experiencing the research version of CrashCourse (CC) concussion education. Prospective cohort study. Level of evidence: Level IV. Quantitative assessment utilizing ANOVA with moderation analysis of 173 male high school football players, aged 13 to 17, who completed baseline assessments of concussion knowledge, concussion reporting, and attitudes about prior educational interventions. Athletes were subsequently shown CC, before a follow-up assessment was administered assessing the same domains. At baseline, only 58.5% of athletes reported that they enjoyed their previous concussion education. Diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis is usually achieved by testing sputum for presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by microscopy, culture or nucleic acid amplification tests. However, many individuals are unable to produce sputum, particularly early in the course of illness. Studies have reported that oral swabs, assayed by nucleic acid amplification tests, may be a suitable substitute or complement to sputum testing. To determine whether this method could be useful of case finding, in which bacillary load is often lower, we evaluated it in the setting of a mass tuberculosis screening study in prison inmates in Brazil. For this sub-study, we enrolled 128 individuals with pulmonary tuberculosis confirmed by sputum Xpert testing, and 128 controls who tested negative by sputum culture and Xpert. We collected two oral swabs by participant, prior to starting treatment. Swabs were collected from the tongue by brushing along the surface for 10 times. The sensitivity of a single oral swab was 43% (N = 55/128; 95% CI: 34–52%). Using two consecutive oral swabs the sensitivity increased to 51% (N = 66/128; 95% CI: 43–60%). The specificity was 100% (128/128). In participants with high mycobaterial load in the sputum, the combined sensitivity was 90% (N = 9/10). In the participants with medium mycobaterial load in the sputum, the combined sensitivity was 79% (N = 23/29). In the participants with low or very low mycobaterial load in the sputum, the combined sensitivity was 38% (N = 34/89). Our data suggest that oral swab sampling, assayed by Xpert, has comparable sensitivity to sputum in participants with high and medium mycobacterial load in the sputum. However, 70% (89/128) of individuals identified through our mass screening study (Carbone et al.) had detection number low or very low in their sputum. In this population, oral swab testing may not have sufficient sensitivity as currently performed. Further studies are needed to identify alternative non-sputum sampling strategies in this population.

Absolute double differential cross sections (DDCS) of electrons emitted from uracil and 5-bromouracil (BrU) in collisions with protons of energy 200 keV have been measured for various forward and backward emission angles over wide range of electron energies. The measured DDCS are compared with the continuum distorted wave-eikonal initial state (CDW-EIS) calculations. The optimized structure of the BrU was estimated along with the population analysis of all the occupied orbitals using a self-consistent field density. A comparison between the measured DDCS data for the two molecules show that the cross section of low energy electrons emitted from BrU is substantially larger than that for uracil. The BrU-to-uracil DDCS ratios obtained from the present measurements indicate an enhancement of the electron emission by a factor which is as large as 2.0 to 2.5. These electrons being the major agent for damaging the DNA/RNA of the malignant tissues, the present results are expected to provide an important input for the radiosensitization effect in hadron therapy. It is noteworthy to mention that the CDW-EIS calculations for Coulomb ionization cannot predict such enhancement. A large angular asymmetry is observed for uracil with a broad structure, which is absent in case of BrU.

Quantum Darwinism posits that the emergence of a classical reality relies on the spreading of classical information from a quantum system to many parts of its environment. But what are the essential physical principles of quantum theory that make this mechanism possible? We address this question by formulating the simplest instance of Darwinism – CNOT-like $fan$-$out$ interactions – in a class of probabilistic theories that contain classical and quantum theory as special cases. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for any theory to admit such interactions. We find that every theory with non-classical features that admits this idealized spreading of classical information must have both entangled states and entangled measurements. Furthermore, we show that Spekkens' toy theory admits this form of Darwinism, and so do all probabilistic theories that satisfy principles like strong symmetry, or contain a certain type of decoherence processes. Our result suggests the counter-intuitive general principle that in the presence of local non-classicality, a classical world can only emerge if this non-classicality can be "amplified" to a form of entanglement.

The Sierras de Córdoba are the easternmost uplifted ranges of the Sierras Pampeanas geological province of Argentina. They are composed of a Neoproterozoic–Paleozoic basement arranged in north–south aligned mountain ranges, limited by west-vergent reverse faults, reactivated or formed by compressive tectonics during the Andean orogeny. The ranges are also affected by oblique subvertical lineaments, probably related to pan-Gondwanan structures. The recorded seismicity shows anomalously deep earthquakes (up to 80 km depth) concentrated in the northwestern area. We attribute this seismicity to the current tectonic activity of the Ojo de Agua Lineament. This lineament is a N130º–135° strike, 70º–80° NE dip, macrostructure with more than 80 km depth and 160 km length. A sinistral transcompressional kinematics (convergent oblique shear) is deduced by the focal mechanism of a deep earthquake, together with hydrological and geomorphological features strongly modified. The continental lithosphere under the Sierras de Córdoba would be colder and more rigid than in a normal subduction area, due to the retraction of the asthenospheric wedge to the foreland, causing seismicity to depths greater than 40 km, below the Mohorovičić discontinuity. Neogene volcanism would be closely related to this lineament, allowing the rapid ascent of melts from the mantle.

Quantum Darwinism proposes that the proliferation of redundant information plays a major role in the emergence of objectivity out of the quantum world. Is this kind of objectivity necessarily classical? We show that if one takes Spekkens’s notion of noncontextuality as the notion of classicality and the approach of Brandão, Piani, and Horodecki to quantum Darwinism, the answer to the above question is “‘yes,” if the environment encodes the proliferated information sufficiently well. Moreover, we propose a threshold on this encoding, above which one can unambiguously say that classical objectivity has emerged under quantum Darwinism.

Objectives: The aim of this paper is to investigate cortical electric neuronal activity as an indicator of brain function, in a mental arithmetic task that requires sustained attention, as compared to the resting state condition. The two questions of interest are the cortical localization of different oscillatory activities, and the directional effective flow of oscillatory activity between regions of interest, in the task condition compared to resting state. In particular, theta and alpha activity are of interest here, due to their important role in attention processing. Methods: We adapted mental arithmetic as an attention ask in this study. Eyes closed 61-channel EEG was recorded in 14 participants during resting and in a mental arithmetic task (“serial sevens subtraction”). Functional localization and connectivity analyses were based on cortical signals of electric neuronal activity estimated with sLORETA (standardized low resolution electromagnetic tomography). Functional localization was based on the comparison of the cortical distributions of the generators of oscillatory activity between task and resting conditions. Assessment of effective connectivity was based on the iCoh (isolated effective coherence) method, which provides an appropriate frequency decomposition of the directional flow of oscillatory activity between brain regions. Nine regions of interest comprising nodes from the dorsal and ventral attention networks were selected for the connectivity analysis. Results: Cortical spectral density distribution comparing task minus rest showed significant activity increase in medial prefrontal areas and decreased activity in left parietal lobe for the theta band, and decreased activity in parietal-occipital regions for the alpha1 band. At a global level, connections among right hemispheric nodes were predominantly decreased during the task condition, while connections among left hemispheric nodes were predominantly increased. At more detailed level, decreased flow from right inferior frontal gyrus to anterior cingulate cortex for theta, and low and high alpha oscillations, and increased feedback (bidirectional flow) between left superior temporal gyrus and left inferior frontal gyrus, were observed during the arithmetic task. Conclusions: Task related medial prefrontal increase in theta oscillations possibly corresponds to frontal midline theta, while parietal decreased alpha1 activity indicates the active role of this region in the numerical task. Task related decrease of intracortical right hemispheric connectivity support the notion that these nodes need to disengage from one another in order to not interfere with the ongoing numerical processing. The bidirectional feedback between left frontal-temporal-parietal regions in the arithmetic task is very likely to be related to attention network working memory function. Significance: The methods of analysis and the results presented here will hopefully contribute to clarify the roles of the different EEG oscillations during sustained attention, both in terms of their functional localization and in terms of how they integrate brain function by supporting information flow between different cortical regions. The methodology presented here might be clinically relevant in evaluating abnormal attention function.
