Background Direct endoluminal imaging, such as with our previously described microangioscope, is an emerging adjunct in endovascular cerebral aneurysm management that enables clinicians to delineate between thrombi and visualize neoepithelialization after stent placement with high resolution. The present study sought to study flow diversion in vivo under direct endoluminal imaging, and to validate our findings with histopathology. Methods In a rabbit model, we implanted each left common carotid artery with a shielded flow diverter (FD) (Medtronic Pipeline Vantage) and nonshielded FD (Medtronic Pipeline Flex) in the right common carotid artery. We studied 9 animals in 3 groups: (1) no periprocedural antiplatelet therapy, (2) aspirin 81 mg daily, and (3) aspirin 81 mg and clopidogrel 75 mg daily. FD thrombosis, stenosis, malapposition, and neoepithelialization were all evaluated by diagnostic cerebral angiography and microangioscopy after 30 days. Diagnostic cerebral angiography and angioscopic video were analyzed by independent evaluators and compared with histopathologic analysis. Results In the aspirin and dual antiplatelet therapy groups, there were no significant observed differences in stent thrombosis, stenosis, malapposition, or neoepithelialization between the shielded and non‐shielded FD groups. There was significantly more thrombus formation in Group 1. Neointimal thickness as measured by the microangioscope was highly correlated with histology (r = 0.72; P = 0.016). Interrater agreement of microangioscope videos was highest for FD thrombosis and stenosis. Conclusion In‐stent thrombosis, stenosis, malapposition, and neopithelialization demonstrated no significant difference between shielded and non‐shielded FDs. Microangioscopy measurements for neointimal thickness were highly correlated with pathology and may be a helpful adjunct to diagnostic cerebral angiography in FD follow‐up.

The relentless growth of modern Machine Learning models has spurred the adoption of sparsification techniques to simplify their architectures and reduce the computational demands. Network pruning has demonstrated success in maintaining original network accuracy while shedding significant portions of the original weights. However, leveraging this sparsity efficiently remains challenging due to computational irregularities, particularly in GPU kernels. A new trend of template-based GPU kernels for semi-structured sparsity shows promise in efficiency but lacks autotuning capabilities to adapt to input dynamics, often underperforming in scenarios where they have not been meticulously hand-tuned. We present STuning-DL, the first pruning-aware autotuner for third-party template-based implementations enabling efficient optimization of sparse kernels for Deep Learning, spanning from high-level aspects (CUDA C++ level) down to GPU-native instructions specifics (assembly-level). STuning-DL tunes and optimizes at run-time sparse kernels’ performance for each input problem, yielding speedups of up to $5.42\times $ on NVIDIA T4-16GB and up to $3.6\times $ on NVIDIA A100-40GB GPU in sparse matrices from real world models compared to existing heuristics from sparse libraries like cuSparse and cuSparseLt.

As medicine becomes more complex, there is pressure for new and more innovative educational methods. Given the economic burden associated with in-person simulation, healthcare, including the realm of surgical education, has begun employing virtual reality (VR). Potential benefits of the addition of VR to surgical learning include increased pre-operative resident exposure to surgical techniques and procedures and better patient safety outcomes. However, these new technological advances, such as VR, may not replicate organic tissues or accurately simulate medical care and surgical scenarios, creating unrealistic pseudo-environments. Similarly, while advancements have been made, there are ongoing disparities concerning the utilization of these technologies. These disparities include aspects such as the availability of stable internet connections and the cost of implementing these technologies. In accordance with other innovative technologies, VR possesses upfront economic costs that may preclude equitable use in different academic centers around the world. As such, VR may further widen educational quality between high- and low-resource nations. This analysis integrates recent innovations in VR technology with existing discourse on global health and surgical equality. In doing so, it offers preliminary guidance to ensure that the implementation of VR occurs in an equitable, safe, and sustainable fashion.

Histiotus is a Neotropical genus of bat that currently includes 11 species. The systematics of Histiotus has been the focus of several studies over the last decades. However, no broad systematic revision has been made, and taxonomic issues such as synonymies, use of subspecies, and specimens that do not fit the description of valid species still persist, as pointed out by several authors. Histiotus alienus was described in 1916 and is known only by the holotype. Here we present a second record of H. alienus and an amended diagnosis of this species. We use qualitative, quantitative, and morphometric analyses based on data from 184 specimens of Histiotus and almost all valid species. Our amended diagnosis establishes the taxonomic limits of H. alienus, as well as a comprehensive comparison with congeners. We also explore new diagnostic characters for H. alienus and provide a few notes on the natural history of this species. Our results highlight skull similarities among Histiotus species and reinforce the usefulness of external morphology for their correct identification. Despite our new insights into the taxonomy of the genus, several taxonomic issues remain, and a comprehensive revision of the genus is needed.

Introduction: Postoperative management following primary cleft lip repair varies across institutions, cleft care teams, and individual surgeons. Postoperative precautions employed after cleft lip repair include dietary restrictions, pacifier limitations, and immobilization, with arm restraints long being used. Yet, restraint distress has led to the exploration of other forms of immobilization. Thus, this study aims to assess cleft lip scar quality and complication rates after postoperative immobilization with arm restraints versus hand mittens. Methods: A retrospective review of patients with unilateral cleft who underwent primary repair with the senior surgeon was done. Data on demographics, surgical characteristics, and immobilization utilized were gathered. A survey with pictures of postoperative scars were sent to laypeople who assessed scar quality with Modified Scar-Rating Scale scores for surface appearance, height, and color of the scar tissue. Statistical analysis was carried out for significance. Results: Twenty-eight patients with a unilateral cleft underwent arm restraints after primary lip repair, and twenty-seven utilized mittens. In total, 42 medical students completed the scar assessment. Photographs were taken an average of 23.9 (±5.8) and 28.2 (±11.9) months postoperatively in the restraint and mitten groups, respectively (p = 0.239). There were no statistically significant differences in scores between scar surface, height, color, or overall scar appearance. Complication rates were also similar between groups. Conclusions: Arm restraints appear to have no additional benefit relative to scar quality, as compared to mittens. Considering the arm restraints’ burden of care, mittens should be considered as a measure to protect the lip after primary repair.

Air pollution is caused by the presence of polluting elements. Ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and particulate matter (PM) are the most controlled gasses because they can be released into the atmosphere naturally or as a result of human activity, which affects air quality and causes disease and premature death in exposed people. Depending on the substance being measured, ambient air monitors have different types of air quality sensors. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in designing drones as mobile sensors for monitoring air pollution. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive patent review to gain insight into the proprietary technologies currently used in drones used to monitor outdoor air pollution. Patent searches were conducted using three different patent search engines: Google Patents, WIPO’s Patentscope, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The analysis of each patent consists of extracting data that supply information regarding the type of drone, sensor, or equipment for measuring PM, the lack or presence of a cyclone separator, and the ability to process the turbulence generated by the drone’s propellers. A total of 1473 patent documents were retrieved using the search engine. However, only 13 met the inclusion criteria, including patent documents reporting drone designs for outdoor air pollution monitoring. Therefore, was found that most patents fall under class G01N (measurement; testing) according to the International Patents Classification, where the most common sensors and devices are infrared or visible light cameras, cleaning devices, and GPS tracking devices. The most common tasks performed by drones are air pollution monitoring, assessment, and control. These categories cover different aspects of the air pollution management cycle and are essential to effectively address this environmental problem.

Background: Socio-economic status, living environments, and race have been implicated in the development of different congenital abnormalities. As orofacial clefting is the most common anomaly affecting the face, an understanding of its prevalence in the United States and its relationship with different determinants of health is paramount. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the modern prevalence of oral–facial clefting in the United States and its association with different social determinants of health. Methods: Utilizing Epic Cosmos, data from approximately 180 US institutions were queried. Patients born between November 2012 and November 2022 were included. Eight orofacial clefting (OC) cohorts were identified. The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) was used to assess social determinants of health. Results: Of the 15,697,366 patients identified, 31,216 were diagnosed with OC, resulting in a prevalence of 19.9 (95% CI: 19.7–20.1) per 10,000 live births. OC prevalence was highest among Asian (27.5 CI: 26.2–28.8) and Native American (32.8 CI: 30.4–35.2) patients and lowest among Black patients (12.96 CI: 12.5–13.4). Male and Hispanic patients exhibited higher OC prevalence than female and non-Hispanic patients. No significant differences were found among metropolitan (20.23/10,000), micropolitan (20.18/10,000), and rural populations (20.02/10,000). SVI data demonstrated that OC prevalence was positively associated with the percentage of the population below the poverty line and negatively associated with the proportion of minority language speakers. Conclusions: This study examined the largest US cohort of OC patients to date to define contemporary US prevalence, reporting a marginally higher rate than previous estimates. Multiple social determinants of health were found to be associated with OC prevalence, underscoring the importance of holistic prenatal care. These data may inform clinicians about screening and counseling of expectant families based on socio-economic factors and direct future research as it identifies potential risk factors and provides prevalence data, both of which are useful in addressing common questions related to screening and counseling.

To determine the optimal germination temperature for Pyrus ussuriensis seeds and whether they experienced the phenomenon of thermodormancy and its inciting factors, several germination tests were conducted using non-dormant P. ussuriensis seeds for comparison. The results showed that the highest germination rate of P. ussuriensis seeds was reached at a constant temperature of 5 °C and variable temperature (night/day) of 5 °C/10 °C. Constant temperatures of 25 °C for three days induced thermodormancy, triggering significant drops in seeding emergence. Thermodormancy was related to the inhibitory effect of endogenous substances in the seed coat and an elevated abscisic acid concentration. The embryo, by contrast, remained non-dormant. Thermodormant and non-dormant seed embryos showed higher germination rates than dormant seed embryos when applied exogenous abscisic acid and gibberellic acid. We found that P. ussuriensis seeds showed thermodormancy; thus, during early spring sowing, high temperatures should be avoided to prevent low seed germination capacity. Additionally, applying exogenous gibberellic acid, shading and increasing soil moisture can be helpful to enhance the species seed germination.

Background:. In October 2012, an open-access, multimedia digital cleft simulator was released. Its purpose was to address global disparities in cleft surgery education, providing an easily accessible surgical atlas for trainees globally. The simulator platform includes a three-dimensional surgical simulation of cleft care procedures, intraoperative videos, and voiceover. This report aims to assess the simulator's demographics and usage in its tenth year since inception. Finally, we also aim to understand the traction of virtual reality in cleft surgical education. Methods:. Usage data of the simulator over 10 years were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Data parameters included the number of users, sessions, countries reached, and content access. An electronic survey was emailed to registered users to assess the benefits of the simulator. Results:. The total number of new and active simulator users reached 7687 and 12,042. The simulator was accessed an average of 172.9.0 ± 197.5 times per month. Low- to middle-income regions accounted for 43% of these sessions. The mean session duration was 11.4 ± 6.3 minutes, yielding a total screen time of 3022 hours. A total of 331 individuals responded to the survey, of whom 80.8% found the simulator to be very useful or extremely useful. Of those involved in education, 45.0% implemented the simulator as a teaching tool. Conclusions:. Global utilization of the simulator has been sustained after 10 years from inception with an increased presence in low- to middle-income nations. Future similar surgical simulators may provide sustainable training platforms to surgeons in low- and high-resource areas.

Priapism, an unwanted, painful, prolonged erection that is unrelated to sexual stimulation, is a common complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). Priapic events in SCD are stuttering, meaning they occur repeatedly with intervening periods of detumescence. Without health care intervention, repeated episodes can lead to erectile dysfunction. There are limited treatment options for SCD-related priapism and no approved targeted therapies. Crizanlizumab is a monoclonal antibody that binds to P-selectin and is used to reduce the frequency of vaso-occlusive crises in patients with SCD. Here, we report the cases of 3 patients with SCD-related priapism who were treated with crizanlizumab. All patients were African American men who experienced numerous priapic episodes that interfered with their daily lives. Upon treatment with crizanlizumab, priapic events were reduced in all 3 patients. These successful cases suggest a potential role for crizanlizumab in the prevention of SCD-related priapism.

Abstract Designing advanced single-digit shape-anisotropy MRAM cells requires an accurate evaluation of spin currents and torques in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with elongated free and reference layers. For this purpose, we extended the analysis approach successfully used in nanoscale metallic spin valves to MTJs by introducing proper boundary conditions for the spin currents at the tunnel barrier interfaces, and by employing a conductivity locally dependent on the angle between the magnetization vectors for the charge current. The experimentally measured voltage and angle dependencies of the torques acting on the free layer are thereby accurately reproduced. The switching behavior of ultra-scaled MRAM cells is in agreement with recent experiments on shape-anisotropy MTJs. Using our extended approach is absolutely essential to accurately capture the interplay of the Slonczewski and Zhang-Li torque contributions acting on a textured magnetization in composite free layers with the inclusion of several MgO barriers.

Pinus koraiensis is famous for its high-quality timber production all the way and is much more famous for its high value health-care nut oil production potential since 1990’s, but the less understanding of its reproduction biology seriously hindered its nut productivity increase. Exploring the effects of reproduction on nutrient uptake, allocation and storage help to understand and modify reproduction patterns in masting species and high nut yield cultivar selection and breeding. Here, we compared seasonality in growth and in nitrogen ([N]) and phosphorus ([P]) concentrations in needles, branches and cones of reproductive (cone-bearing) and vegetative branches (having no cones) of P. koraiensis during a masting year. The growth of one- and two-year-old reproductive branches was significantly higher than that of vegetative branches. Needle, phloem and xylem [N] and [P] were lower in reproductive branches than in vegetative branches, although the extent and significance of the differences between branch types varied across dates. [N] and [P] in most tissues were high in spring, decreased during summer, and then recovered by the end of the growing season. Overall, [N] and [P] were highest in needles, lowest in the xylem and intermediate in the phloem. More than half of the N (73.5%) and P (51.6%) content in reproductive branches were allocated to cones. There was a positive correlation between cone number and N and P content in needles (R2 = 0.64, R2 = 0.73) and twigs (R2 = 0.65, R2 = 0.62) of two-year-old reproductive branches. High nutrient sink strength of cones and vegetative tissues of reproductive branches suggested that customized fertilization practices can help improve crop yield in Pinus koraiensis.

Abstract One of the current ways to continue space research is to launch ballistic rockets that carry scientific payloads. To improve the accuracy of the instantaneous evolution of the payload impact on the Earths surface, it is necessary to estimate indirect measures more efficiently. This study proposes a comprehensive approach to determine the impact point prediction of ballistic rocket payloads. This approach combines tracking algorithms that are based on stochastic estimators with artificial neural network (ANN) models. Four existing stochastic estimators, namely a recursive Kalman filter (RKF), an extended Kalman filter (EKF), an unscented Kalman filter (UKF), and a particle filter (PF) are compared with four proposed stochastic estimators. These include a recursive Kalman filter aided by an ANN (RKFN), an extended Kalman filter aided by an ANN (EKFN), an unscented Kalman filter aided by an ANN (UKFN), and a particle filter aided by an ANN (PFN). This study shows that the results that are obtained through the proposed tracking algorithms RKFN, EKFN, UKFN, and PFN are better than those of the existing tracking algorithms RKF, EKF, UKF, and PF. The proposed estimators can be efficient low‐cost tools to mitigate inaccuracies during tracking up to the payload's impact.

Introduction: Older adults aged 65 and over are vulnerable to functional decline during hospitalization and negative outcomes associated with immobility such as pressure injuries and falls. Studies reveal that nurses overlook patient mobilization due to competing priorities and a lack of comfort with patient mobilization. Hospital-associated functional decline can be mitigated through mobilization protocols. A 36-bed medical surgical unit in a South Florida hospital did not have a protocol for patient mobility. Methods: Nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding patient mobility were assessed using a pre-implementation survey. A virtual education program about the mobility protocol was provided via an online platform. Three weeks later, a post-implementation survey was administered to those who attended the education. Results: Fourteen nurses completed both the pre- and post-test surveys. The nurse-led mobility protocol educational intervention was associated with (a) an increase in average scores from the pre-test nursing mobility attitudes (M = 3.50) and behavior subscales (M = 3.40) to the post-test scores (M = 3.56 and M =3.75, respectively) and (b) a significant increase in the average knowledge scores from the pre-test survey (M = 4.31) to the post test survey (M = 4.62), t(13) = -2.74, p < 0.05. Discussion: The results suggest that the mobility education was successful in increasing nurse mobilization knowledge. Methods to improve nurses’ attitudes and behaviors toward patient mobility should be further explored.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the energy issue from the Human Development approach and the triple transition (the social, economic and energy transition) that become the strategic axis to formulate a national public policy for this country. The analysis and proposals had structure the National Human Development Report, Paraguay 2020. Energy and Human Development, produced by United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Paraguay. For this Agency of the United Nations System, promoting human development is key to its work. Furthermore, it should guide all public policies that aim at ensuring that the population as a whole enjoys better living conditions and wellbeing, thus expanding their capabilities and freedoms. The main results could be summarized in 1) There is a need for more human development and less inequalities; 2) The country ought to transition to a more complex and diversified economy with a resilient middle class and social inclusion; 3) Enable more affordable, clean and sustainable energy (SDG 7), in response to the 2030 National Development Plan, and develop new energy sources; 4) Strengthen policies for energy equity, eradication of energy poverty and vulnerability and support MSMEs, introducing electromobility; and 5) Implement the energy national policy 2040, particularly its governance proposals, with the creation of a Ministry of Energy, and the proposals to transform the income hydroelectric plants into a development bank. Its main contribution is a set of strategic lines of public policy on Energy and Human Development. Besides this strategic axis, there are another three which are energy and equity, sectoral policies, and State policies.

Patterns of growth of crocodilians vary geographically within the same species, so models developed in one area may not predict size-age relationships in others. We used recapture data for three females and six males of Paleosuchus trigonatus from the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam area on the Xingu River to validate a growth model developed on a tributary of the Rio Negro. Individuals were recaptured between two and 10 years after marking (2012–2022). The data indicate that the monomolecular (von Bertalanffy by length) model is adequate to model growth of intermediate size animals. Recapture of one female after eight years indicates that the Rio Negro model can be used to model growth with accuracy for individuals from the Xingu River.

Introduction: Pathologic remodeling of the brain following ischemic stroke results in neuronal loss, increased inflammation, oxidative stress, astrogliosis, and a progressive decrease in brain function. We recently demonstrated that stimulation of steroid receptor coactivator 3 with the small-molecule stimulator MCB-613 improves cardiac function in a mouse model of myocardial ischemia. Since steroid receptor coactivators are ubiquitously expressed in the brain, we reasoned that an MCB-613 derivative (MCB-10-1), could protect the brain following ischemic injury. To test this, we administered MCB-10-1 to rats following middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion.Methods: Neurologic impairment and tissue damage responses were evaluated on day 1 and day 4 following injury in rats treated with control or 10-1.Results: We show that 10-1 attenuates injury post-stroke. 10-1 decreases infarct size and mitigates neurologic impairment. When given within 30 min post middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion, 10-1 induces lasting protection from tissue damage in the ischemic penumbra concomitant with: (1) promotion of reparative microglia; (2) an increase in astrocyte NRF2 and GLT-1 expression; (3) early microglia activation; and (4) attenuation of astrogliosis.Discussion: Steroid receptor coactivator stimulation with MCB-10-1 is a potential therapeutic strategy for reducing inflammation and oxidative damage that cause neurologic impairment following an acute ischemic stroke.

ABSTRACT Family farming in Brazil is responsible for the country’s food security, ensuring most of the food consumed by Brazilians. However, the agricultural machinery and equipment industry has not been dedicated to providing innovations to this sector, focusing mainly on supplying large agribusiness properties with the most advanced technology equipment. Thus, the introduction of new technological solutions regarding agricultural machines for family farming is necessary. Considering the need to supply this branch of the Brazilian agricultural sector with new technologies, this study aimed to establish the design specifications of an autonomous electric vehicle that serves as a multifunction platform, which was primarily designed to remove weeds, mainly meeting the needs of family farmers. The product development methodology in its informational phase was applied to obtain and study these needs. As a result, 19 design specifications were established with their associated target values, allowing defining the physical and economic parameters that will be the basis for the development of the autonomous electric vehicle in its conceptual phase.

Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) is one of the many utilities made possible by embedded systems with internet connections. Through the usage of vehicular cameras, it’s possible to capture and classify traffic signs in real time with Artificial Intelligence (AI), more specifically, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) based techniques. This article discusses the implementation of such TSR systems, and the building process of datasets for AI training. Such datasets include a brand new class to be used in TSR, vegetation occlusion. The results show that this approach is useful in making traffic sign maintenance faster since this application turns vehicles into moving sensors in that context. Leaning on the proposed technique, identified irregularities in traffic signs can be reported to a responsible body so they will eventually be fixed, contributing to a safer traffic environment. This paper also discusses the usage and performance of different YOLO models according to our case studies.

Background: Primary cardiac sarcomas (PCS) are extremely rare malignant tumors involving the heart. Only isolated case reports have been described in the literature over different periods of time. This pathology has been associated with a dismal prognosis and given its rarity; treatment options are very limited. Furthermore, there are contrasting data about the effectiveness of current treatment modalities in improving the survival of patients with PCS, including surgical resection which is the mainstay of therapy. There is a paucity of data on the epidemiological characteristics of PCS. This study has the objective of investigating the epidemiologic characteristics, survival outcomes, and independent prognostic factors of PCS. Methods: A total of 362 patients were ultimately registered in our study from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The study period was from 2000 to 2017. Demographics such as clinical characteristics, overall mortality (OM), and PCS-specific mortality (CSM) were taken into account. A p value of p < 0.001), followed by age 60–79 (HR = 1.429, 95% CI 1.028–1.986, p = 0.033); and PCS with distant metastases (HR = 1.888, 95% CI 1.389–2.566, p < 0.001). Patients that underwent surgical resection of the primary tumor and patients with malignant fibrous histiocytomas (HR = 0.657, 95% CI 0.455–0.95, p = 0.025) had a better OM (HR = 0.606, 95% CI 0.465–0.791, p < 0.001). The highest cancer-specific mortality was observed in age 80+ (HR = 5.037, 95% CI 2.606–9.736, p < 0.001) and patients with distant metastases (HR = 1.953, 95% CI 1.396–2.733, p < 0.001). Patients with malignant fibrous histiocytomas (HR = 0.572, 95% CI 0.378–0.865, p = 0.008) and those who underwent surgery (HR = 0.581, 95% CI 0.436–0.774, p < 0.001) had a lower CSM. Patients in the age range 80+ (HR = 13.261, 95% CI 5.839–30.119, p < 0.001) and advanced disease with distant metastases (HR = 2.013, 95% CI 1.355–2.99, p = 0.001) were found to have a higher OM in the multivariate analyses adjusting for covariates). Lower OM was found in patients with rhabdomyosarcoma (HR = 0.364, 95% CI 0.154–0.86, p = 0.021) and widowed patients (HR = 0.506, 95% CI 0.263–0.977, p = 0.042). Multivariate cox proportional hazard regression analyses of CSM also revealed higher mortality of the same groups, and lower mortality in patients with Rhabdomyosarcoma. Conclusion: In this United States population-based retrospective cohort study using the SEER database, we found that cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma was associated with the lowest CSM and OM. Furthermore, as expected, age and advanced disease at diagnosis were independent factors predicting poor prognosis. Surgical resection of the primary tumor showed lower CSM and OM in the crude analysis but when adjusted for covariates in the multivariate analysis, it did not significantly impact the overall mortality or the cancer-specific mortality. These findings allow for treating clinicians to recognize patients that should be referred to palliative/hospice care at the time of diagnosis and avoid any surgical interventions as they did not show any differences in mortality. Surgical resection, adjuvant chemotherapy, and/or radiation in patients with poor prognoses should be reserved as palliative measures rather than an attempt to cure the disease.

Abstract This study aimed to identify species of Astyanax bimaculatus group from four Itaipu Reservoir tributaries (Paraná River Basin) by cytogenetics and molecular markers (COI) to investigate the possible occurrence of cryptic diversity in part of this basin. The four populations showed only one karyotype formula and simple AgNORs. FISH with 18S rDNA probe showed a high variation, and 5S rDNA probes evidenced simple sites in most of the specimens, although multiple sites are present in two specimens. The variations of 5S and 18S cistrons generated 13 cytotypes. The molecular data did not reveal cryptic diversity in the populations; however, its grouping with 82 sequences from other stretches of the Paraná River Basin originated three haplogroups (distances of 3.12% and 8.82%) and 33 haplotypes were identified. DNA Barcode suggests that cytogenetic variations represent a high polymorphism degree, and it identified the analyzed specimens as Astyanax lacustris, which confirms the morphological identification. Our data suggest that the cryptic diversity of this group in the tributaries of the Paraná River Basin is different than the proposed by the synonymizations of A. altiparanae and A. asuncionensis to A. lacustris. This study reinforces the importance of integrative cytogenetics and molecular methods for taxonomy.

Abstract In 2019, a massive oil spill impacted coastal ecosystems in eleven Brazilian states; these ecosystems were diverse with regard to their different geological settings (sandy beaches, rocky coasts, estuaries, tidal flats, mangroves, and reef systems) being impacted. Here, we present a temporal analysis on the occurrence of remaining contaminants on three beaches (Paiva, Itapuama, and Enseada) of the Cabo de Santo Agostinho City, Pernambuco State. The approach focuses on the systematic mapping of residues, collection of sediment samples, photographic documentation, and qualitative microscopic analysis. Grain size, calcium carbonate, and total organic matter content analyses provided a faciological and energetic characterization of the environment. The objective was to verify the relationship between the remaining contaminants and the geological setting. The results showed intense weathering of the remaining oil residues due to the high energy environment. We found tar balls reworked by seasonal erosion on the three beaches and no tar residues in shallow subsurface sediments. A large quantity of tar residues remains on rock surfaces in Itapuama Beach, which bears the higher permanence of contamination because it is less affected by weathering and beach erosion. This investigation allowed for an impact assessment of the geological-morphological characteristics of the beaches.

Se presentan 11 observaciones de em-bolias arteriales agudas de los miembros, analizando la literatura nacional sobre el tema. Se hace una puesta al día d e la clínica y tratamiento de esta afección, insistiendo particularmente en la importancia del tratamiento quirúrgico precoz. Se operaron todos los pacientes practicando la embolectomía, dos de ellos hicieron gangrena de miembros falleciendo después, dos repitieron las embolias y dos fallecieron -en el postoperatorio inmediato. Se señala la gravedad de la afección vascular embolígena que es la causante de casi todas las muertes por embolia cerebral o mesentérica.

Selection of improved genotypes is important for pasture-based feeding systems in subtropical regions. Our goal was to identify hybrids of Paspalum with enhanced forage yield and cold tolerance across 2 sites [Bagé and Eldorado do Sul (ES)], in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We evaluated 19 P. plicatulum × P. guenoarum hybrids, P. plicatulum genotype 4PT, P. guenoarum cultivars Azulão and Baio and, as Control, Megathyrsus maximus cv. Aruana. At both sites, the experimental design was a completely randomized block with 4 replications. Total dry mass (total-DM), leaf-DM and cold tolerance (ColdT) were recorded. At Bagé, hybrid 102069 produced higher total-DM and leaf-DM than the progenitors and cv. Aruana, while at ES, hybrids 102069 and 10308 produced higher total-DM than 4PT, Azulão and Aruana; hybrid 102069 had higher leaf-DM. At Bagé, 16 hybrids displayed ColdT similar to their progenitors and higher than Aruana, while at ES, 12 hybrids showed ColdT similar to Azulão and Baio and higher than 4PT and Aruana. This study demonstrated that hybrids of Paspalum with superior forage yield to their progenitors and Aruana, and hybrids with higher ColdT than 4PT and Aruana are in existence. The hybridization technique shows potential for producing alternative genotypes with higher forage yield and ColdT for sowing in subtropical regions.

As scaling of the feature size - the main driving force behind an outstanding increase of the performance of modern electronic circuits - displays signs of saturation, the main focus of engineering research in microelectronics shifts towards finding new paradigms. Any future solution must be scalable and energy efficient while delivering high performance, superior to that of CMOS-based circuits. In order to benefit from the outstanding potential of highly advanced silicon processing technology, any new solution must be CMOS compatible. Emerging nonvolatile memories, including magnetoresistive memories, satisfy the necessary requirements: purely electrical addressability, simple structure, high endurance and fast operation. In this work we present the recent developments in the research of spin-transfer torque and spin-orbit torque random access memories and give a brief overview of spin-based logic. Here, the advantages and challenges of these two main contenders in the magnetic memory field are described and the current technological trends are noted. Areas facing computational challenges due to the long-range interaction of the demagnetizing field are highlighted and an existing solution is presented. The use of reinforcement learning to optimize handling of a purely electrically controllable spin-orbit torque memory cell is introduced and first results showing the switching reliability of an optimized switching pulse sequence under thermal fluctuations are reported.

Currently, air pollution is a critical public health problem, which means that the daily measurement of urban air quality can be enriched if measured in a personalized way. Personal environmental monitoring devices can guide the population to take action. They can track their daily activities, avoiding situations that could affect their health, allowing them to precisely know the air quality they breathe in real-time in various microenvironments. In this work, we present a review of cyclonic separation technology patents, such as pre-separators in monitoring devices. We focused on the state-of-the-art commercially available personal monitoring devices, the classification of kinds of patents, and a review of cyclone patents and gas–particle separation behaviors. The World Intellectual Property Organization IP’s portal and Google Patents search engine were used, using international patent classification plus mesh terms involving a cyclone in an air particulate monitor after predefining inclusion and exclusion criteria such as gas–air cyclones, high efficiency, and fine particle separation. Twenty-nine patents were analyzed according to the main characteristics (e.g., cut point, flow rate, and cyclone improvement) available in the patent document. The wide range of cyclones indicates a maximum flow rate of between 0.5 and 4.5 Lpm and a lower cyclone cut point of 0.8 μm. This review includes a discussion of the most relevant features of the patent documents (flow rate, particle cut point, some cyclone improvements, and technology detection). This paper aims to give an overview of the use of cyclones as pre-separators for personal air monitoring devices and to acknowledge the patented improvements of new inventors or developers.

Nucleosomes are stable complexes of DNA and histone proteins that are essential for the proper functioning of the genome. These structures must be unwrapped and disassembled for processes such as gene expression, replication, and repair. Histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) are known to play a significant role in regulating the structural changes of nucleosomes. However, the underlying mechanisms by which these modifications function remain unclear. In this study, we report the results of single molecule micromanipulation experiments on DNA–protein complexes composed of hyperacetylated histone proteins using transverse magnetic tweezers. The experiments were conducted by pre-extending λ-DNA with a force less than 4 pN before introducing hyperacetylated histones into the sample chamber. The DNA shortened as the histones formed complexes with it and the nucleosome arrays were then exposed to increasing tension, resulting in quantized changes in the DNA’s extension with step sizes of (integral multiples of) ~50 nm. We also compared results of experiments using PTM histones and native histones with data collected for both types of histones for the same force ranges (2–80 pN) and loading rates. Our data show that hyperacetylated nucleosomes require an unbinding force of around ~2.5 pN, which is similar to that required for native histones. Moreover, we identified clear differences between the step-size distributions of native and hyperacetylated histones and found that in contrast to tethers reconstituted with native histones, the majority of nucleosomes in tethers compacted with hyperacetylated histones underwent disassembly at forces significantly lower than 6 pN.

In this paper, an integrative analysis is conducted for both sides of the border of Mexicali B.C. and Imperial Valley, regarding the official procedures and ways in which the collection, organization and disposal of data is carried out for the following: pollutant molecules such as PM2.5, PM10, CO, and O3; meteorological data such as temperature and relative humidity; data produced by epidemiological surveillance of acute respiratory infections; and deaths from all causes minus external ones. Some points around the binational surveillance system, raised in a technical report, are collected, giving continuity to the previous work carried out on this matter. Challenges are identified, recommendations are made, and possible solutions are offered to achieve a binational, unified and integrative system that centralizes meteorological, clinical, and pollution data, and that guarantees the quality and expeditious availability of the data concerning of the effects of air pollution on respiratory diseases and/or natural deaths of the local population. According to our results, air monitoring in Mexicali, clinical data on acute respiratory infections, morbidity, and mortality records must be improved, as well as the cooperation and coordination with the institutions of Imperial Valley. Finally, we show that despite the deficiencies and limitations found in the data generated in the locality, especially data on pollution and clinical data, it is possible, with great effort, to build models that measure and explain the effects of air pollution on health. Examples include the relative risk of death from exposure to PM2.5, PM10, CO, and O3; particulate matter air pollution effects on activation of pulmonary tuberculosis; the association between personal PM10 exposure and pulmonary function; and the estimation of costs and public health benefits by PM10 mitigation, among others.

A fin de precisar la condición de estabilidad de los taludes del yacimiento polimetálico Castellano, el objetivo de este estudio fue calcular el factor de seguridad en tres escenarios representados por tres taludes (frentes I, II y III) y bajo dos condiciones: incluyendo en los cálculos el valor del coeficiente sísmico de la región, y no considerarlo. Se utilizó para la modelación y cálculo el software Slide v.6.0. Según los valores obtenidos del factor de seguridad los tres escenarios analizados del yacimiento Castellano son inestables bajo ambas situaciones de sismicidad evaluadas. Los valores del factor de seguridad obtenidos, entre 0,281 y 0,444 están muy por debajo de 1,3 que es el valor límite de estabilidad. Ello indica la necesidad de implementar medidas de estabilización, como pudieran ser las zanjas de drenaje, atendiendo a que se tratan de taludes inactivos sin operaciones de minado.

Abstract Lychnophorinae comprises 19 genera and 117 species. Its representatives are found mostly in the rocky grasslands (“campos rupestres”) of Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Goiás States, Brazil. This study presents a palynological investigation of 10 species belonging to the genus Piptolepis, endemic to the rocky grasslands of the Espinhaço Mountains, in Minas Gerais State. The plant material used in this investigation was obtained from specimens deposited in Brazilian herbaria. Pollen grains were processed by the acetolysis method, measured, described, and photomicrographed in light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Morphological observations revealed Piptolepis pollen to be large, prolate spheroidal in most species, 3-colporate, ectoapertures long, sexine subechinolophate or sublophate. Endoapertures vary from almost circular, lalongate or lalongate, with a median constriction observed only in three species. Three types of spines were identified: prostrate and disorganized, elongated and narrow, and conical, erect, apex acute in the other species. This first palynological study of Piptolepis species allowed the separation of representatives of the genus using pollen keys. The most significant characters were pollen shape, ornamentation, endoaperture, and presence of median constriction in the endoaperture. The findings presented here do not support the infrageneric classification of Piptolepis, as pollen characters were not unique to any section.

Aims: The processes linking long-term bisphosphonate treatment to atypical fracture remain elusive. To establish a means of exploring this link, we have examined how long-term bisphosphonate treatment with prior ovariectomy modifies femur fracture behaviour and tibia mass and shape in murine bones. Methods: Three groups (seven per group) of 12-week-old mice were: 1) ovariectomized and 20 weeks thereafter treated weekly for 24 weeks with 100 μm/kg subcutaneous ibandronate (OVX+IBN); 2) ovariectomized (OVX); or 3) sham-operated (SHAM). Quantitative fracture analysis generated biomechanical properties for the femoral neck. Tibiae were microCT scanned and trabecular (proximal metaphysis) and cortical parameters along almost its whole length measured. Results: Fracture analyses revealed that OVX+IBN significantly reduced yield displacement (vs SHAM/OVX) and resilience, and increased stiffness (vs SHAM). OVX+IBN elevated tibial trabecular parameters and also increased cortical cross-sectional area and second moment of area around minor axis, and diminished ellipticity proximally. Conclusion: These data indicate that combined ovariectomy and bisphosphonate generates cortical changes linked with greater bone brittleness and modified fracture characteristics, which may provide a basis in mice for interrogating the mechanisms and genetics of atypical fracture aetiology.

This paper, based upon historical sociology, deals with the building of a national memory through the ephemeris established in the Asunción nomenclature during recent history (1942-2007), and achieved via three historical steps (military nationalism-Stroessner Era-transition). This dates contribute to complete the construction of the official national memory. Nation is remembered through thirty-one street names : seventeen refer to war events, six to religious ones, five to events dealing with foundations or “births” and three represent civic nature.

Bromeliads are important habitats for reptiles and amphibians, and are constantly used as shelter, refuge, foraging or thermoregulation sites due to their foliar architecture, which allows for constant maintenance of humidity and temperature. This study aimed to identify the herpetofauna inhabiting the non-phytotelmata rupicolous bromeliad Encholirium spectabile Mart. ex Schult. & Schult.f. and to analyze the microhabitat usage of these bromeliads by different species in the Caatinga of northeastern Brazil. From January 2011 to August 2012, we collected data by active search throughout three paralel transects in a rock outcrop in the municipality of Santa Maria, state of Rio Grande do Norte. We recorded four species of anuran amphibians, six lizards, and seven snakes in the bromeliads. The average air temperature was lower and air humidity higher inside than outside the bromeliads, and bromeliads at the rock outcrop borders had lower temperatures and higher humidity than those at the center. We found a significant difference in the distribution of individuals throughout the rock outcrop, with most specimens found at the borders. We also found significant differences regarding the use of each microhabitat by the taxonomic groups, with lizards and snakes using green leaves and dry leaves evenly, along with fewer records in inflorescence stems, and anurans mainly using green leaves, with few records on dry leaves, and no records in the inflorescence stems. This study highlights rupicolous bromeliads as key elements in the conservation and maintenance of amphibians and reptiles in the rock outcrops of Brazilian semi-arid Caatinga.

Phase-pure cubic SmLuO3 and EuLuO3 interlanthanides were synthesized for the first time from nanostructured hydrothermally-derived precursors. LuO(OH), Sm(OH)3 and Eu(OH)3 materials were firstly obtained by hydrothermal synthesis at 250 °C for 24 h. X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopies were employed to investigate the thermal behavior of the mixed systems Sm(OH)3–LuO(OH) and Eu(OH)3–LuO(OH), up to 1600 °C. It was observed that the precursors were converted to lanthanide oxides in the temperature range 800–1200 °C, followed by chemical reactions that allowed the production of a mixture of monoclinic and cubic SmLuO3 or EuLuO3 materials at 1400 °C. Phase-pure cubic (Ia3¯ space group, #206) interlanthanides were produced at 1600 °C, as corroborated by micro-Raman scattering probing the phonon modes, which were determined and assigned. Introduction: Neonatal resuscitation demands equipment for respiratory support not always available in rural areas. Innovative devices are required, and rapid prototyping allows to generate them using three-dimensional (3D) designs and printers. Objective: To evaluate the non-clinical performance and the acceptability by health personnel of a neonatal respiratory device produced by rapid prototyping. Methods: Observational study, descriptive, of proof of concept developed in two steps. Step 1: Manufacture of the device with rapid prototyping in three-dimensional (3D) scanners and printers. Step 2: Demonstration of the invention during training programs in neonatal resuscitation for health personnel in three regions of Peru (Tarapoto, Huánuco and Ayacucho). In both steps, we evaluated the performance of the device connected to a gas flow analyser. A survey was administered to the health workers of Tarapoto and Ayacucho to know their acceptability. Results: The developed prototype is T-shaped with two side bellows that, when pressed with one hand, project air through the centre towards a facial adapter. The use of the prototype in the laboratory generated an average air flow of 4.8 Lt /min (SD ± 1.7) and an average pressure of 5.9 cmH2O (SD ± 1.4). This device was considered to be “very simple to use” in an acceptability survey involving 39 nurses and 11 doctors in remote areas of the capital of Peru. Conclusions: The evaluated prototype is acceptable by the staff and has a performance capable of generating spontaneous breathing at birth.

Liver is the main target organ for colorectal cancer (CRC) metastases. It is estimated that ~25% of CRC patients have synchronous metastases at diagnosis, and about 60% of CRC patients will develop metastases during the follow up. Although several teams have performed simultaneous laparoscopic resections (SLR) of liver and colorectal lesions, the feasibility and safety of this approach is still widely debated and few studies on this topic are present in the literature. The purpose of this literature review is to understand the state of the art of SLR and to clarify the potential benefits and limitations of this approach. Several studies have shown that SLR can be performed safely and with short-term outcomes similarly to the separated procedures. Simultaneous laparoscopic colorectal and hepatic resections combine the advantages of one stage surgery with those of laparoscopic surgery. Several reports compared the short-term outcomes of one stage laparoscopic resection with open resections and showed a similar or inferior amount of blood loss, a similar or lower complication rate, and a significant reduction of hospital stay for laparoscopic surgery respect to open surgery but much longer operating times for the laparoscopic technique. Few retrospective studies compared long term outcomes of laparoscopic one stage surgery with the outcomes of open one stage surgery and did not identify any differences about disease free survival and the overall survival. In conclusion, hepatic and colorectal SLR are a safe and effective approach characterized by less intraoperative blood loss, faster recovery of intestinal function, and shorter length of postoperative hospital stay. Moreover, laparoscopic approach is associated to lower rates of surgical complications without significant differences in the long-term outcomes compared to the open surgery.

The novel Coronavirus has proven challenging for many healthcare organizations. Hospitals are pressed to secure sufficient personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of their healthcare personnel and various strategies have been implemented to stop the spread of the virus. There are still many unknowns about COVID-19 and hospitals are rapidly adapting to new information while trying to maintain the safety and wellbeing of healthcare personnel. Baptist Hospital of Miami developed a collaborative data driven plan to monitor, disseminate vital information, and implement various strategies to protect employees and patients during the pandemic.

On March 11, 2020, Miami-Dade County had its first diagnosed case of COVID-19 and quickly became the top hotspot of COVID-19 cases in Florida. Hospitals were challenged to find effective treatments to combat the virus. A collaborative effort between Doctors Hospital and Boca Raton Regional Hospital established a robust convalescent plasma program for critically ill patients diagnosed with COVID-19 within Baptist Health South Florida.

ABSTRACT Variation in the spatial distribution of leaf chlorophyll content associated with the progression of the phenological cycle of crops may occur in cultivated areas as a result of the variability of environmental conditions and of the intrinsic properties of the plants. The objective of the present study was to model the trend in variation and assess the temporal stability of index of chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll (Chla, Chlb, and Chlt, respectively), and to characterize the spatial distribution of Chlt index in grapevine cv. ‘Chardonnay’. The assessments consisted of in situ measurements made with a portable meter in a commercial vineyard located in the municipality of Espírito Santo do Pinhal, state of São Paulo, Brazil, in the period between flowering and fruit maturation. Descriptive statistics were applied to the indices and regression models were fitted to ascertain the relationship of their mean variation with time. The temporal stability of Chlt index was estimated using Spearman's rank correlation analysis and thematic maps were created using geostatistical analysis and spatial estimation by ordinary kriging. The Chlb and Chlt indices were non-linearly associated with cycle progression and their decrease after the start of maturation was estimated. The temporal stability of the Chlt index was low and variation in its spatial distribution was observed over the assessed period.
