The synthesis of a novel polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane functionalized with eight rigid and directional terpyridine-based arms (Ter-POSS) was successfully achieved via a Sonogashira reaction. The POSS based ligand was extensively characterized using different techniques including 1H, 13C and 29Si NMR as well as UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. The assembly of these nano-caged units in the presence of different transition metal ions (Fe2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+) as well as of a cation from the lanthanides (Eu3+) was investigated using absorption and emission spectroscopies. The final materials display an evident emission in different regions of the visible spectrum as a function of the cation employed. Additional insights into the structural organization of Ter-POSS in the presence of metal cations were obtained via molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics simulations. The polymeric material resulting from the complexation with europium displays a white light emission ascribed to the presence of combined contributions from the blue, green and red regions. The final self-assembled organizations display an increased quantum yield with the highest value (29.6%) obtained in the presence of Zn2+. Moreover, the white-light emitting europium-based nanostructure exhibits one of the highest quantum yields reported in the literature for similar solids.

Nanoscopic lateral confinement created on a graphite surface enabled the study of embryonic stages of molecular self-assembly on solid surfaces using scanning tunneling microscopy performed at the solution/solid interface.

Two-dimensional (2D) chirality has been actively studied in view of numerous applications of chiral surfaces such as in chiral resolutions and enantioselective catalysis. Here, we report on the expression and amplification of chirality in hybrid 2D metallosupramolecular networks formed by a nucleobase derivative. Self-assembly of a guanine derivative appended with a pyridyl node was studied at the solution-graphite interface in the presence and absence of coordinating metal ions. In the absence of coordinating metal ions, a monolayer that is representative of a racemic compound was obtained. This system underwent spontaneous resolution upon addition of a coordinating ion and led to the formation of a racemic conglomerate. The spontaneous resolution could also be achieved upon addition of a suitable guest molecule. The mirror symmetry observed in the formation of the metallosupramolecular networks could be broken

Graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) is an important heterogeneous metal-free catalytic material. Thermally induced post-synthetic modifications, such as amorphization and/or reduction, were recently used to enhance the photocatalytic response of these materials for certain classes of organic transformations, with structural defects possibly playing an important role. The knowledge of how these surface modifications modulate the photocatalytic response of gCN is therefore not only interesting from a fundamental point of view, but also necessary for the development and/or tuning of metal-free gCN systems with superior photo-catalytic properties. Herein, employing density functional theory calculations and combining both the periodic and molecular approaches, in conjunction with experimental EPR measurements, we demonstrate that different structural defects on the gCN surface generate distinctive radical defect states localized within the electronic bandgap, with only those correlated with amorphous and reduced gCN structures being photo-active. To this end, we (i) model defective gCN surfaces containing radical defect states; (ii) assess the interactions of these defects with the radical precursors involved in the photo-driven alkylation of electron-rich aromatic compounds (namely perfluoroalkyl iodides); and (iii) describe the photo-chemical processes triggering the initial step of that reaction at the gCN surface. We provide a coherent structure/photo-catalytic property relationship on defective gCN surfaces, elaborating how only specific defect types act as binding sites for the perfluoroalkyl iodide reagent and can favor a photo-induced charge transfer from the gCN surface to the molecule, thus triggering the perfluoroalkylation reaction.

In this study, a new bottom-up approach is proposed to predict the crystal structure of the substrate-induced polymorph (SIP) of an archetypal molecular semiconductor. In spite of intense efforts, the formation mechanism of SIPs is still not fully understood, and predicting their crystal structure is a very delicate task. Here, we selected lead phthalocyanine (PbPc) as a prototypical molecular material because it is a highly symmetrical yet nonplanar molecule and we demonstrate that the growth and crystal structure of the PbPc SIPs can be templated by the corresponding physisorbed self-assembled molecular networks (SAMNs). Starting from SAMNs of PbPc formed at the solution/graphite interface, the structural and energetic aspects of the assembly were studied by a combination of in situ scanning tunneling microscopy and multiscale computational chemistry approach. Then, the growth of a PbPc SIP on top of the physisorbed monolayer was modeled without prior experimental knowledge, from which the crystal structure of the SIP was predicted. The theoretical prediction of the SIP was verified by determining the crystal structure of PbPc thin films using X-ray diffraction techniques, revealing the formation of a new polymorph of PbPc on the graphite substrate. This study clearly illustrates the correlation between the SAMNs and SIPs, which are traditionally considered as two separate but conceptually connected research areas. This approach is applicable to molecular materials in general to predict the crystal structure of their SIPs.

International audience; Understanding the surface properties of hybrid perovskite materials is a key aspect to improve not only the interface properties in photovoltaic cells but also the stability against moisture degradation. In this work, we study the local electronic properties of two series of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskite films by atomic force microscopybased methods. We correlate nanoscale features such as the local surface potential (as measured by Kelvin probe force microscopy) to the current response (as measured by conductive atomic force microscopy). CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskites made using lead acetate as a precursor result in films with high purity and crystallinity and also result in heterogeneous local electrical properties, attributed to variations in the density of surface states. In contrast, when using lead iodide as a precursor, the perovskite surface exhibits a uniform distribution of surface states. This work also aims to understand the early stages of water-induced degradation at the surface of those films. Through high-precision exposure to small amounts of water vapor, we observe a higher stability for surfaces prepared with lead iodide precursors. More importantly, each precursor-based fabrication route is associated with either nor p-type behavior of the films. These characteristics are determined by the type of surface states, which also and eventually preside over stability. This work should help discriminate between perovskite synthesis routes and improve their stability in photovoltaic cell applications.

The rapid growth of wearables has created a demand for lightweight, elastic and conformal energy harvesting and storage devices. The conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) has shown great promise for thermoelectric generators, however, the thick layers of pristine poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) required for effective energy harvesting are too hard and brittle for seamless integration into wearables. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-elastomer composites have been developed to improve its mechanical properties, although so far without simultaneously achieving softness, high electrical conductivity, and stretchability. Here we report an aqueously processed poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polyurethane-ionic liquid composite, which combines high conductivity (>140 S cm−1) with superior stretchability (>600%), elasticity, and low Young’s modulus (, Though deformable thermoelectric materials are desirable for integrating thermoelectric devices into wearable electronics, typical thermoelectric materials are too brittle for practical application. Here, the authors report a high-performance elastic composite for stretchable thermoelectric modules.

International audience; We have investigated the potential as an OLED emitter of a spiro compound with phosphine substituents initially designed as a host layer for triplet emitters. This is motivated by the fact that the spiro architecture is expected to reduce the detrimental impact of intermolecular interactions, thus allowing for the use of a single-component layer. Moreover, theoretical calculations suggest that this compound displays all features required for a thermally-assisted delayed fluorescence (TADF) behavior. The photophysical properties of the compound in solution are extremely unusual, as illustrated in particular by a dual emission band with relative intensities strongly depending on the experimental conditions. Although no TADF behavior is evidenced in OLED devices, the compound unexpectedly generates a white light signal, which is interpreted as the result of the formation of both intramolecular and intermolecular (exciplex) charge-transfer states.

We report on the detection and stabilization of a previously unknown two-dimensional (2D) pseudopolymorph of an alkoxy isophthalic acid using lateral nanoconfinement. The self-assembled molecular networks formed by the isophthalic acid derivative were studied at the interface between covalently modified graphite and an organic solvent. When self-assembled on graphite with moderate surface coverage of covalently bound aryl groups, a previously unknown metastable pseudopolymorph was detected. This pseudopolymorph, which was presumably "trapped" in between the surface bound aryl groups, underwent a time-dependent phase transition to the stable polymorph typically observed on pristine graphite. The stabilization of the pseudopolymorph was then achieved by using an alternative nanoconfinement strategy, where the domains of the pseudopolymorph could be formed and stabilized by restricting the self-assembly in nanometer-sized shallow compartments produced by STM-based nanolithography carried out on a graphite surface with a high density of covalently bound aryl groups. These experimental results are supported by molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics simulations, which not only provide important insight into the relative stabilities of the different structures, but also shed light onto the mechanism of the formation and stabilization of the pseudopolymorph under nanoscopic lateral confinement. ispartof: JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY vol:143 issue:29 pages:11080-11087 ispartof: location:United States status: published

Phosphonium-based polythiophene conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with three different counterions (dodecylsulfate, octylsulfate and perfluorooctane sulfonate) are synthesized to determine how the nature of the counterion affects the thermal properties, the self-assembly in thin films and the performance as the cathode interfacial layer in polymer solar cells (PSCs). The counterion has a significant effect on the thermal properties of the CPEs, affecting both their glass transition and crystalline behaviour. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering studies also indicate that changing the nature of the counterion influences the microstructural organization in thin films (face-onversusedge-on orientation). The affinity of the CPEs with the underlying photoactive layer in PSCs is highly correlated with the counterion species. Finally, in addition to an increase of the power conversion efficiency ofca15% when using these CPEs as cathode interfacial layers in PSCs, a higher device stability is noted, compared to a reference device with a calcium interlayer. This work aims at presenting an innovative method for tailoring the morphology of functionalized plasma polymer films (PPF). The approach is based on the formation of a plasma polymer bilayer system in which the two layers differ by their chemical composition and cross-linking degree. As a case study, propanethiol-based plasma polymer films have been investigated. As revealed by a much higher S/C ratio than in the propanethiol precursor (i.e. 0.83 vs 0.33), it has been demonstrated that the bottom layer contains a large fraction of trapped sulfur-based molecules (e.g. H2S). When further covered by a denser PPF formed at higher energetic conditions, a three-dimensional morphological reorganization takes place giving rise to the micro/nano structuration of the organic material. The shape, the dimensions as well as the density of the generated structures are found to depend on the thickness of both coatings involved in the bilayer structure, offering a great flexibility for surface engineering. Annealing experiments unambiguously confirm the major role played by the sulfur-based trapped molecules for inducing the reshaping process. The whole set of data clearly paves the way for the development of an innovative approach for finely tailoring the morphology of functionalized PPF at the micro/nano scale.

International audience; To rationalize how the gelation ability of a low molecular weight gelator is influenced by its molecular structure, we performed extensive solubility tests of a group of thiazole-based gelators and made use of Hansen solubility parameter formalism. We observe that the increase of a linear alkyl chain in these gelators promotes an increase of the radius of the gelation sphere as well as a gradual shift of its center to lower values of the polar (δP) and hydrogen bonding (δH) components. The molecular packing within the fibers and the crystal habit were determined by a combination of X-ray diffraction and molecular modeling. We attribute the gradual and linear shift of the gelation sphere to the fact that all of the studied gelators share the same molecular packing, so that an increasing length of the alkyl chain reduces the proportion of polar groups at the surface, resulting in a gradual increase in the contact between apolar parts of the fiber and the solvent.

We have used atomistic simulations to study the network topology and the thermomechanical properties of the methyl-4,4-bis-[6-(3-phenyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-1,3-benzoxazine)]pentanoate based system (MDP-a), in comparison with commercially available bisphenol-A based benzoxazine (Ba-a). In the first part of the work, we focus on the effect of the transesterification reaction of the ester group of the MDP-a molecule on the overall properties of the crosslinked resin. Remarkably, this additional crosslink site shifts the Tg of the MDP-a thermoset by 116 °C as compared to the same resin generated with a conventional tetra-functional crosslinking scheme. The rapid increase of the thermomechanical stability is shown to be mostly related to the volume shrinkage of the thermoset upon curing. In the second part of this study, we report on the effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the properties of both BA-a and MDP-a polybenzoxazines, in particular on the glass transition temperature. We find that the addition of CNTs has a negligible impact on the Tg of the BA-a resin, whereas it induces a surge of 45 °C in Tg for the MDP-a nanocomposite. A detailed analysis suggests that the change of the thermomechanical stability of the CNT-nanocomposites is a result of the balance between different structural variations (free volume, crosslink and hydrogen bond densities, chain mobility) and the polymer/CNT interfacial energy.

A small percentage of an impurity was shown, via scanning tunneling microscopy, to drastically change the on-surface self-assembly behavior of an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid, by initiating the nucleation and growth of a different polymorph. International audience; Precise characterization of the hydrogen bond network present in discrete self-assemblies of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide monomers derived from amino-esters (ester BTAs) is crucial for the construction of elaborated functional co-assemblies. For all ester BTA dimeric structures previously reported, ester carbonyls in the side chain act as hydrogen bond acceptors, yielding well-defined dimers stabilized by six hydrogen bonds. The ester BTA monomer derived from glycine (BTA Gly) shows a markedly different self-assembly behaviour. We report herein a combined experimental and computational investigation aimed at determining the nature of the dimeric species formed by BTA Gly. Two distinct dimeric structures were characterized by single crystal X-Ray diffraction measurements. Likewise, a range of spectroscopic and scattering techniques as well as molecular modelling were employed to diagnose the nature of the dynamic dimeric structures in toluene. Our results unambigously establish that both ester and amide carbonyls are involved in the hydrogen bond network of the discrete dimeric species formed by BTA Gly. The participitation of roughly 4.5 ester carbonyls and 1.5 amide carbonyls per monomer as determined by FT-IR spectroscopy implies that several conformations coexist in solution. Moreover, NMR analysis and modelling data reveal rapid interconversion between these different conformers leading to a symmetric structure on the NMR timescale. Rapid hydrogen bond shuffling between conformers having three (three), two (four), one (five) and zero (six) amide carbonyl group (ester carbonyl respectively) as hydrogen bond acceptors is proposed to explain the magnetic equivalence of the amide N−H on the NMR timescale. When compared to other ester BTA derivatives for which only ester carbonyls are acting as hydrogen bonding acceptors, the fluxional behaviour of the hydrogen-bonded dimers of BTA Gly likely originates from a larger range of energetically-favorable conformations accessible through rotation of the BTA side chains.

New solid polymer electrolytes are of particular interest for next-generation high-energy batteries since they can overcome the limited voltage window of conventional polyether-based electrolytes. Herein, a flame-retardant phosphorus-containing polymer, poly(dimethyl(methacryloyloxy)methyl phosphonate) (PMAPC1) is introduced as a promising polymer matrix. Free-standing membranes are easily obtained by mixing PMAPC1 with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and a small amount of acetonitrile (AN). LiTFSI/AN mixed aggregates are formed that act as plasticizers and enable ionic conductivities up to 1.6 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 100 °C. The high content of LiTFSI used in our electrolytes leads to the formation of a stable LiF solid-electrolyte interphase, which can effectively suppress Li dendrites and the chemical degradation of AN in contact with Li. Accordingly the electrolyte membranes exhibit a wide electrochemical stability window above 4.7 V versus Li+/Li and fire-retardant properties due to the presence of the phosphorus-containing polymer. Atomistic molecular modeling simulations have been performed to determine the structure of the electrolytes on the microscopic scale and to rationalize the trends in ionic conductivity and the transport regime as a function of the electrolyte composition. Finally, our electrolyte membranes enable stable cycling performance for LiFePO4|PMAPC1 + LiTFSI + AN|Li batteries.

One major goal in medical imaging is the elaboration of more efficient contrast agents (CAs). Those agents need to be optimized for the detection of affected tissues such as cancers or tumors while decreasing the injected quantity of agents. The paramagnetic contrast agents containing fluorine atoms can be used for both proton and fluorine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and they open the possibility of simultaneously mapping the anatomy using 1H MRI and accurately locating the agents using 19F MRI. One of the challenges in this domain is to synthesize molecules containing several chemically equivalent fluorine atoms with relatively short relaxation times to allow the recording of 19F MR images in good conditions. With that aim, we propose to prepare a CA containing a paramagnetic center and nine chemically equivalent fluorine atoms using a cycloaddition reaction between two building blocks. These fluorinated contrast agents are characterized by 19F NMR, showing differences in the fluorine relaxation times T1 and T2 depending on the lanthanide ion. To complement the experimental results, molecular dynamics simulations are performed to shed light on the 3D-structure of the molecules in order to estimate the distance between the lanthanide ion and the fluorine atoms.

International audience; The effect of the post-annealing process on different properties of poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) nanofibers has been investigated in view of their use in energy-harvesting devices. Polymeric PLLA nanofibers were prepared by using electrospinning and then were thermally treated above their glass transition. A detailed comparison between as-spun (amorphous) and annealed (semi-crystalline) samples was performed in terms of the crystallinity, morphology and mechanical as well as piezoelectric properties using a multi-technique approach combining DSC, XRD, FTIR, and AFM measurements. A significant increase in the crystallinity of PLLA nanofibers has been observed after the post-annealing process, together with a major improvement of the mechanical and piezoelectric properties.

Fillers are widely used to improve the thermomechanical response of polymer matrices, yet often in an unpredictable manner because the relationships between the mechanical properties of the composite material and the primary (chemical) structure of its molecular components have remained elusive so far. Here, we report on a combined theoretical and experimental study of the structural and thermomechanical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT)–reinforced polybenzoxazine resins, as prepared from two monomers that only differ by the presence of two ethyl side groups. Remarkably, while addition of CNT is found to have no impact on the glass-transition temperature (Tg) of the ethyl-decorated resin, the corresponding ethyl-free composite features a surge by ∼47 °C (50 °C) in Tg, from molecular dynamics simulations (dynamic mechanical analysis measurements), as compared to the neat resin. Well‐defined pyrene‐based poly(2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyloxy‐4‐yl methacrylate) (PTMA) (co)polymers have been synthesized and combined with multi‐wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as electrode material for organic radical batteries. The influence of the number of pyrene pendent groups on the electrochemical response of the nanocomposite materials has been assessed, focusing on the capacity retention upon charge/discharge cycling and on the cycling rate. In parallel, the interactions between the polymethacrylate chains and the CNT surface have been investigated with molecular modeling techniques, to shed light on the nature and stability of the functionalized PTMA/CNT interface.

We have shown in our first articles [1] [2] that even after encapsulation, the first rapid phase of degradation mechanism observed has been attributed to oxidation of interfaces and an alteration of the charges collection process. A second phase slower is induced by the oxidation of the active film, namely a decrease in the absorption and a degradation of the charge transport process. We revealed that another decrease in power conversion efficiency which has been induced by a possible interfacial passivation occurred at the organic/cathode interface, owing to the presence of residual oxygen, moisture and other impurities. This is in reality the real cause of the first rapid phase of degradation mechanism observed.

Water-soluble binders can enable greener and cost-effective Li-ion battery manufacturing by eliminating the standard fluorine-based formulations and associated organic solvents. The issue with water-based dispersions, however, remains the difficulty in stabilizing them, requiring additional processing complexity. Herein, we show that mechanochemical conversion of a regular poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) water-based dispersion produces a hydrogel that meets all the requirements as binder for lithium-ion battery electrode manufacture. We particularly highlight the suitable slurry rheology, improved adhesion, intrinsic electrical conductivity, large potential stability window and limited corrosion of metal current collectors and active electrode materials, compared to standard binder or regular PEDOT:PSS solution-based processing. When incorporating the active materials, conductive carbon and additives with PEDOT:PSS, the mechanochemical processing induces simultaneous binder gelation and fine mixing of the components. The formed slurries are stable, show no phase segregation when stored for months, and produce highly uniform thin (25 μm) to very thick (500 μm) films in a single coating step, with no material segregation even upon slow drying. In conjunction with PEDOT:PSS hydrogels, technologically relevant materials including silicon, tin, and graphite negative electrodes as well as LiCoO

WC/C:H thin films have been synthesized by a hybrid Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition/Physical Vapor Deposition method consisting in the reactive sputtering of a tungsten target in Ar-C2H2 atmospheres. The influence of the gas mixture on the physico-chemical properties of WC/C:H layers including their chemical composition, morphology, tribological and mechanical features has been studied. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements reveal an increase in the carbon content and a higher aliphatic bonds density in detriment to the carbide ones as a function of the acetylene flow. These results, in combination with Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy data, allow to depict the material as crystallized WxC1 − y nano-spheres (corresponding to aggregate of smaller nanograins of W2C and WC1 − x) diluted in a hydrogenated carbon matrix; the ratio between the hard crystallized WC phase and the softer hydrogenated carbon matrix being reduced when increasing the acetylene flow. The film nanohardness and tribological properties (i.e. friction coefficient and wear rate) are directly connected to the film chemical composition and structure. High nanohardness (~ 20 GPa), friction coefficient of μ = 0.5 and high wear rate (5.4 · 10− 13 m2/N) are obtained for the lowest carbon content of 37 at.%. When increasing the carbon content in the film (77 at.%), the hardness strongly decreases to ~ 10 GPa and a lower friction coefficient (μ = 0.2) and wear rate (4.7 · 10− 15 m2/N) are obtained. These properties are similar and even better than the ones of Cr(VI) based electroplating coatings, demonstrating the attractiveness of our WC/C:H films as a potential alternative to these coatings.

Previously, we reported that the photo-oxidation of P3HT:PCBM was shown to induce an increase of the electric resistance at the active layer in the solar cells, resulting in a drop in the device performances. Meanwhile, fragments resulting from the partial molecular scission of P3HT chains were also detected by analyzing the produced materials using MALDI-TOF-MS. However, the way the photo-oxidation of these active materials actually impacts on the electric resistance of the resulting device yet remains to be investigated. In this work, we perform Conductive-AFM (C-AFM) and Space Charge Limited Current (SCLC) measurements on the photo-oxidized P3HT based films; the results indicate that the conductivity of P3HT decreases upon irradiation, mainly due to a decrease of the hole mobility. Even though the number average molecular weight of the P3HT only modestly decreases during the photo-oxidation, UV–vis spectra indicate a significant decrease of the long-range ordering of the P3HT chains. These results inferred that P3HT crystal formation may partially be prevented by the oxidized molecular fragments of reduced molecular weight, resulting in the decrease of P3HT hole mobility, hence leading to the observed resistance increase in these photovoltaic active layers.

TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNA) elaborated on transparent and conducting substrates are promising materials for photoanodes in dye-sensitized solar cells as the reduced dimensionality enhances their transport properties. TNA were obtained by anodization of Ti films deposited by magnetron sputtering on transparent conducting oxide-coated glass. This study presents the impact of introducing a compact TiO2 underlayer on the morphological, optical and electrochemical properties of the TNA photoanodes.The TNA morphology was found to be more regular with a TiO2 underlayer and the macroscopic homogeneity of the samples was also increased. This is ascribed to a strong reduction, in the presence of the compact TiO2 underlayer, of a side reaction leading to oxygen evolution and destructuring the TNA film during anodization.As a consequence, the optical and transport properties (characterized by UV–vis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, respectively) were improved, together with an increased photovoltaic efficiency. We present a comparative molecular modeling study of the thermomechanical properties of crosslinked benzoxazine resins. A crosslinking algorithm was developed in order to simulate the thermal curing of thermoset resins and monitor the evolution of their network topology. The resin properties (gelation point, crosslink density, volumetric expansion, glass transition temperature, thermal expansion coefficient and elastic constants) were probed as a function of the network composition. The simulation results are in line with analytical models and in very good agreement with experimental data. Our molecular dynamics simulations provide a detailed rationale for the differences in the measured thermomechanical properties of recently reported benzoxazine derivatives and pave the way to the design of improved resins using predictive modeling tools based on the monomer chemical structure as the sole input.

Chiral induction in self-assembled monolayers has garnered considerable attention in the recent past, not only due to its importance in chiral resolution and enantioselective heterogeneous catalysis but also because of its relevance to the origin of homochirality in life. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of homochirality in a supramolecular low-density network formed by achiral molecules at the interface of a chiral solvent and an atomically-flat achiral substrate. We focus on the impact of structure and functionality of the adsorbate and the chiral solvent on the chiral induction efficiency in self-assembled physisorbed monolayers, as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy. This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of a new hybrid material based on poly(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl-4-yl methacrylate) (PTMA) for lithium battery applications. Our strategy relies on the anchoring of nitroxide-embedding polymer chains onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The resulting hybrid material (MWCNT-g-PTMA) not only prevents the solubilization of the PTMA active material but also benefits from its structural design aspects. The MWCNT-g-PTMA structure confers high performances thanks to the precise distribution of the PTMA redox material with respect to the MWCNT conductive network, as confirmed by molecular modeling simulations of the polymer/MWCNT interface. Physicochemical characterizations are evidence of the success of MWCNT-g-PTMA synthesis with a polymer loading up to 30 wt%. Electrochemical analysis shows the potential of MWCNT-g-PTMA as a battery material, with a capacity reaching 85% of the theoretical value, a good cyclability (retention > 80% after 150 cycles) and excellent power performances (capacity at 60C exceeding 65% of the nominal value).

In the first approach a branched monomer is polymerized using three different catalysts which differentiate in the degree of association to the π-system of the polymer backbone. In the second approach a copolymerization is performed with the branched and a linear monomer. In a next step the influence of the different degrees of nonlinearity on the optoelectronic properties is investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Increasing the crystallinity of thin films in concert with the planarization of the conjugated backbones has long been considered as the key for success in the design of polymer materials with optimized charge transport properties. Recently, this general belief had to be revisited with the emergence of a new class of disordered or even seemingly amorphous donor− acceptor conjugated polymers that exhibit charge mobilities larger than 1 cm2 V−1 s −1 . By combining all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to electronic structure calculations on three representative polymers, we demonstrate that high crystallinity and planar conjugated backbones are not mandatory to reach low-energetic-disorder materials. It is rather the resilience to thermal fluctuations of the torsions along the conjugated backbones within and between structural domains and the bulkiness of the alkyl side chains that control the energy landscape.

Patterned and layered hydrophilic/phobic coatings were deposited on multiple surfaces using nonfluorinated precursors (AA, acrylic acid; PMA, propargyl methacrylate) with an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge operating in open air. Water contact angles of the resulting films could be tuned from 135° (very hydrophobic) by adjusting the AA/PMA feed ratio and/or via postdeposition exposure of films to an Ar/O2 plasma treatment. Coatings could be applied to any surface and were seen to be water stable, due in large part to cross-linking induced from the reactivity of the PMA pendant groups. Hybrid hydrophilic/phobic patterns at submillimeter length scales, and philic/phobic/philic laminates were produced using a shadow mask and sequential deposition, respectively. Chemical heterogeneity of films was assessed using XPS, SIMS, and micro-IR imaging and suggest that localization of COOH and OH groups are primarily responsible for hydrophilicity.
