Abstract: The AEg̅IS collaboration at CERN’s AD produces antihydrogen atoms in the form of a pulsed, isotropic source with a precisely defined formation time. AEg̅IS has recently undergone major upgrades to fully benefit from the increased number of colder antiprotons provided by the new ELENA decelerator and to move toward forming a horizontal beam to directly investigate the influence of gravity on the H̅ atoms, thereby probing the Weak Equivalence Principle for antimatter. This contribution gives an overview of these upgrades as well as subsequent results from the first beam times with ELENA.

Abstract: Silicon nanochannel plates (NCPs) are efficient positron to positronium converters and are employed as sources of abundant cold positronium. Characterization of the emitted positronium energy spectrum is crucial to assess the NCP performance and support their further optimization. We present here a Time-of-Flight (ToF) system optimized to measure the energy spectrum of positronium produced by NCP converters held at cryogenic temperatures. The ToF-apparatus was tested by implanting 7 keV positrons into NCPs at room temperature before performing ToF experiments using positron implantation energies of 7 and 11 keV into NCPs held at 20 K. At these conditions we succeeded in determining the energy spectrum of the positronium escaping from the nanochannels into the vacuum down to an energy of 10 meV.

Abstract: In this work, we discuss the possibility of inertial sensing with positronium in the 2$^{3}$S metastable state for the measurement of optical dipole, relativistic and gravitational forces on a purely leptonic matter-antimatter system. Starting from the characteristics of an available 2$^{3}$S beam, we estimate the time necessary to measure accelerations ranging from ~10$^{5}$ m/s$^{2}$ to 9.1 m/s$^{2}$ with two different inertial sensitive devices: a classical moiré deflectometer and a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. The sensitivity of the Mach–Zehnder interferometer has been estimated to be several tens of times better than that of the moiré deflectometer, for the same measurement time. Different strategies to strengthen the 2$^{3}$S beam flux and to improve the sensitivity of the devices are proposed and analyzed. Among them, the most promising are reducing the divergence of the positronium beam through 2D laser Doppler cooling and coherent positronium Raman excitation from the ground state to the 2$^{3}$S level. If implemented, these improvements promise to result in the time required to measure an acceleration of 9.1 m/s$^{2}$ of few weeks and 100 m/s$^{2}$ of a few hours. Different detection schemes for resolving the fringe pattern shift generated on 2$^{3}$S positronium crossing the deflectometer/interferometer are also discussed. Abstract: This work reports on the first attempt to prepare bioderived polymer films by blending polylactic acid (PLA) and poly(dodecylene furanoate) (PDoF). This blend, containing 10 wt% PDoF, was filled with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in variable weight fractions (from 0.25 to 2 phr), and the resulting nanocomposites were characterized to assess their microstructural, thermal, mechanical, optical, electrical, and gas barrier properties. The PLA/PDoF blend resulted as immiscible, and the addition of rGO, which preferentially segregated in the PDoF phase, resulted in smaller (from 2.6 to 1.6 µm) and more irregularly shaped PDoF domains and in a higher PLA/PDoF interfacial interaction, which suggests the role of rGO as a blend compatibilizer. rGO also increased PLA crystallinity, and this phenomenon was more pronounced when PDoF was also present, thus evidencing a synergism between PDoF and rGO in accelerating the crystallization kinetics of PLA. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) showed that the glass transition of PDoF, observed at approx. 5 °C, shifted to a higher temperature upon rGO addition. The addition of 10 wt% PDoF in PLA increased the strain at break from 5.3% to 13.0% (+145%), and the addition of 0.25 phr of rGO increased the tensile strength from 35.6 MPa to 40.2 MPa (+13%), without significantly modifying the strain at break. Moreover, rGO decreased the electrical resistivity of the films, and the relatively high percolation threshold (between 1 and 2 phr) was probably linked to the low aspect ratio of rGO nanosheets and their preferential distribution inside PDoF domains. PDoF and rGO also modified the optical transparency of PLA, resulting in a continuous decrease in transmittance in the visible/NIR range. Finally, rGO strongly modified the gas barrier properties, with a remarkable decrease in diffusivity and permeability to gases such as O2, N2, and CO2. Overall, the presented results highlighted the positive and sometimes synergistic role of PDoF and rGO in tuning the thermomechanical and functional properties of PLA, with simultaneous enhancement of ductility, crystallization kinetics, and gas barrier performance, and these novel polymer nanocomposites could thus be promising for packaging applications.

Abstract: Antihydrogen atoms with K or sub-K temperature are a powerful tool to precisely probe the validity of fundamental physics laws and the design of highly sensitive experiments needs antihydrogen with controllable and well defined conditions. We present here experimental results on the production of antihydrogen in a pulsed mode in which the time when 90% of the atoms are produced is known with an uncertainty of ~250 ns. The pulsed source is generated by the charge-exchange reaction between Rydberg positronium atoms—produced via the injection of a pulsed positron beam into a nanochanneled Si target, and excited by laser pulses—and antiprotons, trapped, cooled and manipulated in electromagnetic traps. The pulsed production enables the control of the antihydrogen temperature, the tunability of the Rydberg states, their de-excitation by pulsed lasers and the manipulation through electric field gradients. The production of pulsed antihydrogen is a major landmark in the AE $$\bar{g}$$ IS experiment to perform direct measurements of the validity of the Weak Equivalence Principle for antimatter. Antihydrogen atoms are a unique type of antimatter that can be used to probe small violations of fundamental laws of physics. The authors present experimental results obtained with the AEgIS project at CERN for the production of antihydrogen atoms (Hbar) via charge exchange with laser excited positronium that allow for precise timing of Hbar production.

Abstract: International audience; In this work we present a hybrid detection method providing simultaneous imaging and timing information suitable for fully monitoring positronium (Ps) formation, its laser excitation, and its spatial propagation for the first trials of pulsed antihydrogen ($\bar{H}$) production through a charge-exchange reaction with trapped antiprotons ($\bar{p}$). This combined method, based on the synchronous acquisition of an EJ-200 scintillation detector and a microchannel plate (MCP) detector with a dual readout (phosphor screen image and electrical pick-up signal), allows all relevant events in the experiment to be accurately determined in time while allowing high resolution images of e$^{+}$ from Ps laser photodissociations to be acquired. The timing calibration process of the two detectors discussed in details as well as the future perspectives opened by this method.

Abstract: We characterized the pulsed Rydberg-positronium production inside the Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy (AE$\overline{\textrm{g}}$IS) apparatus in view of antihydrogen formation by means of a charge exchange reaction between cold antiprotons and slow Rydberg-positronium atoms. Velocity measurements on the positronium along two axes in a cryogenic environment (≈10K) and in 1T magnetic field were performed. The velocimetry was done by microchannel-plate (MCP) imaging of a photoionized positronium previously excited to the $n$=3 state. One direction of velocity was measured via Doppler scan of this $n$=3 line, another direction perpendicular to the former by delaying the exciting laser pulses in a time-of-flight measurement. Self-ionization in the magnetic field due to the motional Stark effect was also quantified by using the same MCP-imaging technique for Rydberg positronium with an effective principal quantum number $n_\textrm{eff}$ ranging between 14 and 22. We conclude with a discussion about the optimization of our experimental parameters for creating Rydberg positronium in preparation for an efficient pulsed production of antihydrogen. Abstract: From the experimental point of view, very little is known about the gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter. In particular, the Weak Equivalence Principle, which is of paramount importance for the General Relativity, has not yet been directly probed with antimatter. The main goal of the AEgIS experiment at CERN is to perform a direct measurement of the gravitational force on antimatter. The idea is to measure the vertical displacement of a beam of cold antihydrogen atoms, traveling in the gravitational field of the Earth, by the means of a moiré deflectometer. An overview of the physics goals of the experiment, of its apparatus and of the first results is presented.

FACT is designed to detect pions originating from the annihilation of antiprotons. Its 794 scintillating fibers operate at 4K and are read out by silicon photomultipliers (MPPCs) at near room temperature. FACT provides the antiproton/antihydrogen annihilation position information with a few ns timing resolution. We present the hardware and software developments which led to the successful operation of the detector for antihydrogen detection and the results of an antiproton-loss based efficiency assessment. The main background to the antihydrogen signal is that of the positrons impinging onto the positronium conversion target and creating a large amount of gamma rays which produce a sizeable signal in the MPPCs shortly before the antihydrogen signal is expected. We detail the characterization of this background signal and its impact on the antihydrogen detection efficiency. Abstract: An innovative plant configuration joining a thermal energy storage device with a 2 kWTh parabolic solar dish collector (PDC) has been designed. The novelty of this small-scale solar plant prototype consists in the use of molten salts (MS) both as fluid carrier and thermal energy storage medium. An eutectic mixture of NaNO3, NaNO2 and KNO3 has been used allowing a 10 kWh energy storage accomplished with two 50-L tanks. An experimental campaign has been planned to test the behavior of each of the assembled components and to provide a preliminary analysis of the plant performances. As first evaluation, the energy efficiency of the system has been calculated in correspondence to selected MS flow rates referred to steady state conditions. This has been achieved by monitoring the MS temperature in correspondence to suitable points of the inlet and outlet sections of the receiver. The preliminary confirmations of this investigation looks promising to integrate the PDC technology within district heating systems for advanced renewable energy exploitations.

Abstract: Graphene laminated (GL) coatings formed by stacked few layer graphene (FLG) nanocrystals were deposited on low-density polyethylene (PE) films by the mechanical rubbing technique. Molecular transport through the bilayer membrane was studied by the gas phase permeation technique by monitoring the CO2, N-2 and H-2(2) transport fluxes in transient conditions. The results evidenced that the transport exhibited anomalous character. The experimental data could be reproduced assuming that the penetrant concentration in the GL coating, c(int)(t), reached a saturation value c(s) following compressed exponential kinetics c(int)(t) = c(s)[1 - e(-(lambda relt)beta)]. The relaxation time tau(rel) = 1/lambda(rel) showed thermally activated behavior, and its value increased with the kinetic diameter of the penetrant molecules. The critical exponent beta = 1.5 +/- 0.1 for CO2 and N-2 and beta = 2.0 +/- 0.1 for H-2(2) did not change with temperature. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) analysis indicated that the average cross-section (h(g)) of the cavities in the GL coating exhibited comparable size to the kinetic diameter (sigma(k)) of the penetrant molecules. The results could be explained by assuming that the molecular infiltration in the GL structure occurred in nano-channels having distributed path lengths where the penetrant transport obeyed a configurational diffusion mechanism.

Abstract: We have studied the kinetics of gas transport through films made of self-assembled cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) by a time-resolved mass spectroscopy technique. Few micrometers thick films deposited on polylactic acid (PLA) substrates act as impermeable barriers for CO2, O2, and N2 and reduce the 2H2 (deuterium) and He permeation flux by a factor of ∼103 with respect to the uncoated substrate. Penetrant transport is controlled by the solution-diffusion mechanism and the coating acts as a diffusive barrier. 2H2 and He diffusivity values are in the 10–10 and 10–9 cm2 s–1 range, respectively, and their migration occurs by thermally activated process with 39 ± 1 and 33 ± 2 kJ mol–1 activation energy. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy analysis indicates that the diffusive path between the packed nanofibrils consists of elongated cavities with cross-sectional size ∼ 0.31 nm. Abstract: The gas transport properties of polymer nanocomposite membranes made of Few Layer Graphene nanoplatelets dispersed in amine-modified epoxy resins were studied by gas phase permeation analysis with H2, N2 and CO2. The gas permeability of the nanocomposites decreases with increasing filler content. Filler addition does not change the gas selectivity of the pure epoxy membrane. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy analysis indicates that, by increasing the filler content, the free volume structure does not change but the fractional free volume decreases. Gas transport results were explained by the formation of a constrained polymer region of thickness l i f at the filler-matrix interface. The l i f parameter was evaluated from the reduction of the fractional free volume of the nanocomposite samples with respect to that of the epoxy matrix. The average value of l i f , ∼ 20 nm, permits to reproduce quantitatively the experimental data at all examined temperatures, filler concentration and test gas.

Abstract: Epoxy membranes with same chemical structure but different free volumes were prepared using aliphatic epoxide and polyether diamines as cross-linking agents. Their fractional free volume f h ( T ) was previously evaluated as a function of temperature and cross-linking density [P. N. Patil et al., PhysChemChemPhys 18 (2016) 3817–3824]. Original H2 permeation measurements were performed changing sample temperature and network structure and compared with CO2 and N2 transport data. Modelling gas permeability Φ in the framework of the free volume theory we observe that the Arrhenius-type behavior of Φ for test gases is consequence of the f h ( T ) linear increase with temperature and that at equal f h value membranes exhibit increasing Φ values by decreasing the cross-linking density. Analysis of permeability data on this set of test molecules with different size and condensation properties suggests that increasing the cross-linking between polymer chains limits their thermal fluctuations and the redistribution of the free volume elements where diffusional jumps of penetrant molecules occur.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we show recent measurements of $2^{3}S$ long-lived positronium production via spontaneous decay from the 3 3P level. The possibility to tune the velocity of the $2^{3}S$ positronium, excited following this scheme, is presented. In the light of these results, we discuss the use of the $3^{3}P$→ $2^{3}S$ transition to realize a monochromatic pulsed $2^{3}S$ positronium beam with low angular divergence. Preliminary tests of $2^{3}S$ beam production are presented. The possibility to overcome the natural $3^{3}P$ → $2^{3}S$ branching ratio via stimulated emission, and thus increasing the intensity of the $2^{3}S$ source, is also shown. A position-sensitive detector for a pulsed beam of positronium, with spatial resolution of ≈ 90 $\mu m$, is finally described in view of its possible application for the spatial characterization of the $2^{3}S$ beam

Abstract: International audience; In this contribution, the system of the external plastic scintillator slabs of the AEgIS experiment is presented. These slabs, surrounding the superconducting magnet and operating at room temperature, are read out by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) that are calibrated and equalised to be exploited as a whole detector with useful segmentation and redundancy to effectively detect single antiparticle annihilations. In particular, thanks to periodically recurring calibrations with cosmic rays and to a detailed study of the system in different operational conditions, including extensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, these scintillators can be used to identify antiproton annihilations over the constant background represented by cosmic rays and over the strongly time-dependent background due to positrons/positronium annihilations. By means of the sampling and digitization of the analog signal produced by each phototube and the consequent analysis of the amplitude of the recorded events, the energy released by the particle in the scintillator slab can be estimated consistently and with good accuracy. As a consequence, we are able to identify an amplitude range where positrons/positronium annihilations can be univocally excluded. This prerequisite allows us to exploit the array of external plastic scintillators for antihydrogen annihilations tagging.

Abstract: International audience; We report on recent developments in positronium work in the frame of antihydrogen production through charge exchange in the AEgIS collaboration [1]. In particular, we present a new technique based on spatially imaging a cloud of positronium by collecting the positrons emitted by photoionization. This background free diagnostic proves to be highly efficient and opens up new opportunities for spectroscopy on antimatter, control and laser manipulation of positronium clouds as well as Doppler velocimetry.

Abstract: The CO2 transport process was studied in a series of amine-modified epoxy resins having different cross-linking densities but the same chemical environment for the penetrant molecules. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) was used to monitor the free volume structure of the samples and experimentally evaluate their fractional free volume fh(T) and its temperature evolution. The analysis of the free volume hole size distribution showed that all the holes have a size large enough to accommodate the penetrant molecules at temperatures T above the glass transition temperature Tg. The measured gas diffusion constants at T > Tg have been reproduced in the framework of the free volume theory of diffusion using a novel procedure based on the use of fh(T) as an input experimental parameter.

Abstract: Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH) nanocomposite films containing 0.25 wt % of Graphene Oxide (GO) nanoparticles were prepared by solution-casting and characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-Rays Diffraction (XRD) and Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS). Gas transport properties were analyzed in the 295–343 K interval using CO2, N2, D2 and He. Neat PHBH films showed a semi-crystalline structure with lamellar crystalline domains of 30 ± 1 and 5 ± 1 nm size in the (020) and (002) direction, respectively. GO dispersion increases the PHBH crystalline fraction from 0.28 to 0.60 wt. % without changing the size of crystalline domains and the structure of the PHBH free volume. Nanocomposite films show mechanical properties similar to those of the neat PHBH film but improved gas barrier properties as consequence of the larger number density the of gas- impermeable crystalline domains.

Abstract: The process of implantation and diffusion of positron in nanochanneled silicon crystals has been simulated in detail through the Monte Carlo technique. Our implantation simulations evidenced the fraction of empty volume inside the sample to be the decisive factor in the determination of the shape of the implantation profile, with the specific shape of the nanoscopic structure playing a marginal role for implantation processes with an energy above 3 keV. Moreover we observed that, due to the high density of surfaces inside of the silicon sample, the subsequent diffusion process is highly suppressed and that thermalized positrons reach the surface of a nanoscopic channel close to their implantation depth. Due to this suppression of the diffusion process, 60–80% of the positrons implanted at an energy comprised between 4 and 13 keV will reach, at thermal energy, the surface of a channel without escaping the sample or undergoing annihilation.

Abstract: Amine-modified epoxy resins were prepared by a mixture of an aliphatic epoxy resins (neo-pentyldiglycidyl ether) and polyether diamines (polyoxypropylene) as cross-linking agent. Four types of resins with different molecular packing structures were prepared by altering their cross-linking densities and hence their glass transition temperature. Gas phase permeation measurements show that the CO2 and N2 transport through the present epoxy membranes obeys to the solution-diffusion mechanism. It is observed that, decreasing the cross-linking density both the membrane permeability and the CO2/N2 selectivity increase. These findings reveal that the gas transport process is mainly dependent on the cross linking density which strongly affects the gas diffusivity while weakly changing the gas solubility. The change in gas diffusivity is discussed in the frame of polymer free volume theory.

Abstract: AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) is an experiment that aims to perform the first direct measurement of the gravitational acceleration g of antihydrogen in the Earth’s field. A cold antihydrogen beam will be produced by charge exchange reaction between cold antiprotons and positronium excited in Rydberg states. Rydberg positronium (with quantum number n between 20 and 30) will be produced by a two steps laser excitation. The antihydrogen beam, after being accelerated by Stark effect, will fly through the gratings of a moir´e deflectometer. The deflection of the horizontal beam due to its free fall will be measured by a position sensitive detector. It is estimated that the detection of about 103 antihydrogen atoms is required to determine the gravitational acceleration with a precision of 1%. In this report an overview of the AEgIS experiment is presented and its current status is described. Details on the production of slow positronium and its excitation with lasers are discussed.

Abstract: The characteristics of low energy antiproton annihilations on nuclei (e.g. hadronization and product multiplicities) are not well known, and Monte Carlo simulation packages that use different models provide different descriptions of the annihilation events. In this study, we measured the particle multiplicities resulting from antiproton annihilations on nuclei. The results were compared with predictions obtained using different models in the simulation tools GEANT4 and FLUKA. For this study, we exposed thin targets (Cu, Ag and Au) to a very low energy antiproton beam from CERN's Antiproton Decelerator, exploiting the secondary beamline available in the AEgIS experimental zone. The antiproton annihilation products were detected using emulsion films developed at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics in Bern, where they were analysed at the automatic microscope facility. The fragment multiplicity measured in this study is in good agreement with results obtained with FLUKA simulations for both minimally and heavily ionizing particles. Abstract: International audience; The AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy) experiment is designed with the objective to test the weak equivalence principle with antimatter by studying the free fall of antihydrogen in the Earth’s gravitational field. A pulsed cold beam of antihydrogen will be produced by charge exchange between cold Ps excited in Rydberg state and cold antiprotons. Finally the free fall will be measured by a classical moiré deflectometer. The apparatus being assembled at the Antiproton Decelerator at CERN will be described, then the advancements of the experiment will be reported: positrons and antiprotons trapping measurements, Ps two-step excitation and a test-measurement of antiprotons deflection with a small scale moiré deflectometer.

Abstract: In this work a characterization study of forward emission from a thin, meso-structured silica Received 17 March 2017 positron/positronium (Ps) converter following implantation of positrons in light of possible antihydrogen production is presented. The target consisted of a similar to 1 mu m thick ultraporous silica film e-gun evaporated onto a 20 nm carbon foil. The Ps formation and emission was studied via Single Shot Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy measurements after implantation of pulses with 3 4.10(7) positrons and 10 ns temporal width. The forward emission of implanted positrons and secondary electrons was investigated with a micro-channel plate phosphor screen assembly, connected either to a CCD camera for imaging of the impinging particles, or to a fast photomultiplier tube to extract information about their time of flight. The maximum Ps formation fraction was estimated to be similar to 10%. At least 10% of the positrons implanted with an energy of 3.3 keV are forward-emitted with a scattering angle smaller than 50 and maximum kinetic energy of 1.2 keV. At least 0.1-0.2 secondary electrons per implanted positron were also found to be forward-emitted with a kinetic energy of a few eV. The possible application of this kind of positron/positronium converter for antihydrogen production is discussed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We demonstrate laser excitation of the n=3 state of positronium (Ps) in vacuum. A specially designed high-efficiency pulsed slow positron beam and single shot positronium annihilation lifetime spectroscopy were used to produce and detect Ps. Pulsed laser excitation of n=3 level at 205 nm was monitored via Ps photoionization induced by a second intense laser pulse at 1064 nm. About 15% of the overall positronium emitted in vacuum was excited to n=3 and photoionized. Saturation of both the n=3 excitation and the following photoionization was observed and is explained by a simple rate equation model. Scanning the laser frequency allowed us to extract the positronium transverse temperature related to the width of the Doppler-broadened line. Moreover, preliminary observation of excitation to Rydberg states (n = 15...17) using n=3 as intermediate level was observed, giving an independent confirmation of efficient excitation to the 33P state. We demonstrate the laser excitation of the n=3 state of positronium (Ps) in vacuum. A combination of a specially designed pulsed slow positron beam and a high-efficiency converter target was used to produce Ps. Its annihilation was recorded by single-shot positronium annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Abstract: International audience; The weak equivalence principle states that the motion of a body in a gravitational field is independent of its structure or composition. This postulate of general relativity has been tested to very high precision with ordinary matter, but no relevant experimental verification with antimatter has ever been carried out. The AEGIS experiment will measure the gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen to ultimately 1% precision. For this purpose, a pulsed horizontal antihydrogen beam with a velocity of several 100 m s−1 will be produced. Its vertical deflection due to gravity will be detected by a setup consisting of material gratings coupled with a position-sensitive detector, operating as a moiré deflectometer or an atom interferometer. The AEGIS experiment is installed at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator, currently the only facility in the world which produces copious amounts of low-energy antiprotons. The construction of the setup has been going on since 2010 and is nearing completion. A proof-of-principle experiment with antiprotons has demonstrated that the deflection of antiparticles by a few μm due to an external force can be detected. Technological and scientific development pertaining to specific challenges of the experiment, such as antihydrogen formation by positronium charge exchange or the position-sensitive detection of antihydrogen annihilations, is ongoing.

Abstract: Production of antihydrogen by using the charge exchange reaction, as proposed by AEgIS (Antimatter Experiment: gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy), requires the formation of a dense cloud of positronium atoms excited to Rydberg states. In this work, the recent advances in AEgIS towards this result are described. Namely, the manipulation of positrons to produce bunches containing more than 108 particles and the laser excitation of positronium to Rydberg states, using n=3 as intermediate level, are presented.

Abstract: see paper for full list of authors; International audience; We present here the first results obtained employing the Timepix3 for the detection and tagging of annihilations of low energy antiprotons. The Timepix3 is a recently developed hybrid pixel detector with advanced Time-of-Arrival and Time-over-Threshold capabilities and has the potential of allowing precise kinetic energy measurements of low energy charged particles from their time of flight. The tagging of the characteristic antiproton annihilation signature, already studied by our group, is enabled by the high spatial and energy resolution of this detector. In this study we have used a new, dedicated, energy selection beamline (GRACE). The line is symbiotic to the AEgIS experiment at the CERN Antiproton Decelerator and is dedicated to detector tests and possibly antiproton physics experiments. We show how the high resolution of the Timepix3 on the Time-of-Arrival and Time-over-Threshold information allows for a precise 3D reconstruction of the annihilation prongs. The presented results point at the potential use of the Timepix3 in antimatter-research experiments where a precise and unambiguous tagging of antiproton annihilations is required.

Abstract: Nanoporous zirconia is used in gas sensors and as a membrane in high-temperature fuel cells. In the present work, positron annihilation spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed on pure zirconia-sintered nanopowders, to determine the porosity. The ortho-positronium annihilation parameter R of zirconia samples, treated at 800°C and 700°C and annealed in oxygen–nitrogen atmosphere with different O2 contents, were obtained. The photoluminescence, positron annihilation spectroscopy, and TEM studies show presence of defects in all samples. Furthermore, the positron annihilation studies indicate a presence of large free volumes (of the order of few atomic units, at least), open towards the nanocrystals surface what was confirmed by TEM observations which detected a few types of defects such as voids within ≈2–4 interplane distances, stacking faults, terraces and point defects.

Abstract: AEgIS (Antimatter experiment: gravity, interferometry, spectroscopy) is an experiment approved by CERN with the goal of studying antihydrogen physics. In AEgIS, antihydrogen will be produced by charge exchange reactions of cold antiprotons with positronium atoms excited in a Rydberg state (n > 20). In the first phase of the experiment, controlled acceleration by an electric field gradient (Stark effect) and subsequent measurement of free fall in a Moiré deflectometer will allow a test of the weak equivalence principle. In a second phase, the antihydrogen will be slowed, confined, and laser-cooled to perform CPT studies and detailed spectroscopy. In the present work, after a general description of the experiment, the present status of advancement will be reviewed, with special attention to the production and excitation of positronium atoms.

Abstract: We compare recent measurements of total cross sections for positron scattering in benzene from Trento laboratory [G.P. Karwasz, R.S. Brusa, Z. Idziaszek, A. Karbowski, Eur. J. Phys. D 144 (2007) 197] with early [O. Sueoka, J. Phys. B 21 (1988) L631], later [O. Sueoka, M.K. Kawada, M. Kimura, Nucl. Instr. Method. Phys. B 171 (2000) 96] and the most recent [C. Makochekanwa, O. Sueoka, M. Kimura, Phys. Rev. A 68 (2003) 32707-1] data from Tokyo laboratory. The latter data are significantly lower than the two other sets. A simple calculation shows that an angular resolution correction, rising strongly in the limit of zero energy, should be applied to measured values if wide apertures in the scattering cell and or strong guiding magnetic fields are used. We show, with the help of the modified effective range theory, that the data from Trento and those of Sueoka (1988) would agree well with those of Sueoka et al. (2000) if the data from Sueoka et al. (2000) were artificially low, as a result of the big angular resolution error due to the experimental conditions present in Sueoka et al. (2000).

Abstract: International audience; We describe a system designed to re-bunch positron pulses delivered by an accumulator supplied by a positron source and a Surko-trap. Positron pulses from the accumulator are magnetically guided in a 0.085 T field and are injected into a region free of magnetic fields through a μμ-metal field terminator. Here positrons are temporally compressed, electrostatically guided and accelerated towards a porous silicon target for the production and emission of positronium into vacuum. Positrons are focused in a spot of less than 4 mm FWTM in bunches of ∼8 ns FWHM. Emission of positronium into the vacuum is shown by single shot positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy.

It is currently taking data with antiprotons, electrons and positrons. The apparatus is designed to form a cold, pulsed beam of antihydrogen to measure the Earth’s gravitational acceleration g on antimatter and to perform spectroscopy measurements. This paper describes the main features of the apparatus and shows a selected review of some achieved results.

Abstract: International audience; The goal of the AEgIS experiment is to measure the gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen ? the simplest atom consisting entirely of antimatter ? with the ultimate precision of 1%. We plan to verify the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP), one of the fundamental laws of nature, with an antimatter beam. The experiment consists of a positron accumulator, an antiproton trap and a Stark accelerator in a solenoidal magnetic field to form and accelerate a pulsed beam of antihydrogen atoms towards a free-fall detector. The antihydrogen beam passes through a moir? deflectometer to measure the vertical displacement due to the gravitational force. A position and time sensitive hybrid detector registers the annihilation points of the antihydrogen atoms and their time-of-flight. The detection principle has been successfully tested with antiprotons and a miniature moir? deflectometer coupled to a nuclear emulsion detector.

Abstract: Some applications of controlled-energy positron beams in material studies are discussed. In porous organic polysilicates, measurements of 3γ annihilation by Doppler broadening (DB) method at the Trento University allowed to trace pore closing and filling by water vapor. In silicon coimplanted by He+ and H+, DB data combined with positron lifetime measurements at the München pulsed positron beam allowed to explain Si blistering. Presently measured samples of W for applications in thermonuclear reactors, irradiated by W+ and electrons, show vast changes of positron lifetimes, indicating complex dynamics of defects.

Abstract: Zecca [this issue] makes a-posteriori operations on experimental data for positron–helium scattering [G.P. Karwasz, D. Pliszka, A. Zecca, R.S. Brusa, Nucl. Instr. and Meth. B 240 (2005) 666], instead of performing independent checks and tests on He and other light gases. We find his judgments on a hypothetical background due to the ion-feedback and on the energy resolution not fully documented. Awaiting independent experimental verification, we stress again the as-far-as-possible accuracy and completeness of apparatus settings, pre-and post-experiment checks and measurement procedures in the Ar and He experiment by Karwasz, Pliszka and Brusa.

Abstract: Preliminary total cross section data for positron scattering on argon and krypton between 250 and 5000 eV are presented. A Ramsauer-type apparatus, previously used for electron-scattering measurements has been modified. To check for the convergence between electron and positron total cross sections, a semiempirical analysis has been applied. The analysis for argon indicates an asymptotic convergence for electron and positron projectiles – the high energy parameters of the both fits are equal within the uncertainty limits. No such a clear conclusion is possible with the present data up to 5000 eV for krypton.

Abstract: It is well-known that the characteristics of aluminum nitride thin films mainly depend on their morphologies, the quality of the film-substrate interfaces and the open volume defects. A study of the depth profiling and morphological characterization of AlN thin films deposited on two types of Si substrates is presented. Thin films of thicknesses between 200 and 400 nm were deposited during two deposition times using a reactive sputter magnetron. These films were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction and imaging techniques (SEM and TEM). To analyze the composition of the films, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was applied. Positron annihilation spectroscopy, specifically Doppler broadening spectroscopy, was used to gather information on the depth profiling of open volume defects inside the films and the AlN films-Si substrate interfaces. The results are interpreted in terms of the structural changes induced in the films as a consequence of changes in the deposition time (i.e., thicknesses) and of the orientation of the substrates.
