Xipapillomavirus includes a group of viruses almost exclusively reported in both beef cattle and dairy breeding, in which they induce papillomatosis and occasionally malignant tumors. Bovine papillomaviruses (BPVs) infection impacts greatly on animal productions, and this is amplified by their cosmopolitan distribution. Cutaneous proliferative lesions in bovines can relate to leather depreciation and impaired milk production by giving rise to obstruction of the teat and hygiene limitations, often leading to hemorrhagic mastitis. This study reports the identification of a novel Xipapillomavirus type associated with udder papilloma in a Jersey cow in Costa Rica. Viral genome was fully sequenced and molecularly characterized. Histopathology and viral phylogeny and evolution are also presented and discussed by comparison with already described BPVs. Based on results, a novel Xipapillomavirus type, namely BPV30, is proposed. BPV30 is a typical Xipapillomavirus 2 most similar to BPV12, from which it separated roughly 18 million years ago. The absence of E6 and the presence of E10 in BPV30 confirm an E6 loss occurring along the clade leading to BPV12. The identification of this novel BPV is fundamental to the development of specific prophylactic tools, which represent the most effective weapon to fight viral circulation, to prevent infections, and eventually controlling associated proliferative lesions. Los xipapilomavirus comprenden un grupo de virus señalados casi exclusivamente en el ganado vacuno de carne y en la cría de ganado lechero, en los que inducen papilomatosis y ocasionalmente tumores malignos. La infección por los papilomavirus bovinos (BPV) tiene un gran impacto en las producciones animales, que se ve amplificado por su distribución cosmopolita. Las lesiones proliferativas cutáneas en los bovinos pueden relacionarse con la depreciación de la piel y el deterioro de la producción de leche al dar lugar a la obstrucción del pezón y a limitaciones higiénicas, lo que a menudo conduce a la mastitis hemorrágica. En este estudio se informa de la identificación de un nuevo tipo de Xipapillomavirus asociado al papiloma de la ubre en una vaca Jersey de Costa Rica. El genoma viral fue completamente secuenciado y caracterizado molecularmente. También se presentan y discuten la histopatología y la filogenia y evolución virales mediante la comparación con los BPV ya descritos. A partir de los resultados, se propone un nuevo tipo de Xipapillomavirus, el BPV30. El BPV30 es un Xipapillomavirus 2 típico muy similar al BPV12, del que se separó hace aproximadamente 18 millones de años. La ausencia de E6 y la presencia de E10 en el BPV30 confirman una pérdida de E6 a lo largo del clado que lleva al BPV12. La identificación de este nuevo BPV es fundamental para el desarrollo de herramientas profilácticas específicas, que representan el arma más eficaz para luchar contra la circulación viral, prevenir las infecciones y, eventualmente, controlar las lesiones proliferativas asociadas. Physical inactivity (PI) and sedentary behaviours constitute a global health problem that has negative consequences for health and is also considered the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. A European project named ‘Professional and Personal Experience through Lifelong Learning and Regular Sport’ aims to encourage voluntary participation in sporting activities to achieve its benefits on health. First, a report will be carried out on the effects of physical activity (PA) or inactivity on health, which is often linked to school failure, obesity, self-esteem, etc. The data will be obtained through a completely anonymous online sport and health questionnaire, addressed to all profiles. The data collected through this survey will serve as a basis for understanding the reality of Europeans in terms of quality of life, demographics, physical fitness, and other factors. It is also intended to design a handbook with recommendations for improving health holistically through PA. Finally, the goal is to translate this project into a teaching system for sports professionals, so that they can transfer this knowledge as educational methods to improve people’s health, while adapting it to the particularities of each country, i.e., to provide these sports professionals with tools to train other people.

The aim of the present investigation was to assess the role of cardiac diastole on the hemodynamic response to metaboreflex activation. We wanted to determine whether patients with diastolic function impairment showed a different hemodynamic response compared with normal subjects during this reflex. Hemodynamics during activation of the metaboreflex obtained by postexercise muscle ischemia (PEMI) was assessed in 10 patients with diagnosed heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and in 12 age-matched healthy controls (CTL). Subjects also performed a control exercise-recovery test to compare data from the PEMI test. The main results were that patients with HFpEF achieved a similar mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) response as the CTL group during the PEMI test. However, the mechanism by which this response was achieved was markedly different between the two groups. Patients with HFpEF achieved the target MAP via an increase in systemic vascular resistance (+389.5 ± 402.9 vs. +80 ± 201.9 dynes·s−1·cm−5 for HFpEF and CTL groups respectively), whereas MAP response in the CTL group was the result of an increase in cardiac preload (−1.3 ± 5.2 vs. 6.1 ± 10 ml in end-diastolic volume for HFpEF and CTL groups, respectively), which led to a rise in stroke volume and cardiac output. Moreover, early filling peak velocities showed a higher response in the CTL group than in the HFpEF group. This study demonstrates that diastolic function is important for normal hemodynamic adjustment to the metaboreflex. Moreover, it provides evidence that HFpEF causes hemodynamic impairment similar to that observed in systolic heart failure. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study provides evidence that diastolic function is important for normal hemodynamic responses during the activation of the muscle metaboreflex in humans. Moreover, it demonstrates that diastolic impairment leads to hemodynamic consequences similar to those provoked by systolic heart failure. In both cases the target blood pressure is obtained mainly by means of exaggerated vasoconstriction than by a flow-mediated mechanism.

The muscle metaboreflex is enhanced in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients, and this fact has been associated with the early fatigue shown by these patients in response to exercise. In animal studies of CHF, it was found that the limited capacity to enhance ventricular performance is responsible for a functional shift from a cardiac output to a systemic vascular resistance (SVR) increase in the mechanism by which the cardiovascular system raises blood pressure in response to the metaboreflex. However, the existence of this functional shift is still unknown in humans. The present study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that a similar hemodynamic response was also present in humans with CHF. The hemodynamic response to metaboreflex activation obtained through postexercise ischemia was assessed in nine patients with CHF and nine healthy controls (CTL) by means of impedance cardiography. The main results were that 1) the blood pressure rise due to the metaboreflex was similar in the two groups; 2) the CTL group achieved the blood pressure response via cardiac output increase, and the CHF group, via SVR increase; and 3) stroke volume was enhanced in the CTL group and decreased in the CHF group. This study demonstrates that in CHF patients, metaboreflex recruitment causes a functional shift from flow increase to peripheral vasoconstriction in the mechanism through which blood pressure is increased. The incapacity to enhance cardiac performance and stroke volume is probably the primary cause of this cardiovascular alteration.

The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-ischemic and antianginal activity and the duration of the new dihydropyridine calcium blocker nisoldipine (NIS) in patients with stable angina pectoris. The research was carried out on 16 patients, all male, 41-68 (mean of 58) years of age, with stable angina pectoris and fixed ischemic threshold (variations15%). After a 10-day washout period, patients were randomized to treatment with either 10 mg of nisoldipine or placebo (PL), twice daily for 21 days, according to a double-blind, crossover design. Patients underwent maximal symptom-limited exercise testing at 10 W/min on a bicycle ergometer, twice during the washout period, and once at the end of each treatment period, 3 and 12 h after oral administration of the drugs. In comparison with placebo, nisoldipine increased the ischemic threshold (N, 704 +/- 45 s; PL, 548 +/- 35 s; p0.01) and anginal threshold (N, 766 +/- 44 s; PL, 699 +/- 42 s; p0.01) for at least 12 h, and the ST-segment depression significantly decreased at maximal work (PL, 2.4 +/- 0.1 mm; N, 1.8 +/- 0.2 mm; p0.01) and at maximal common work (PL, 2.4 +/- 0.1 mm; N, 1.15 +/- 0.2 mm; p0.01). Similar to placebo the rate-pressure product was not significantly changed at higher submaximal effort after N, but it was significantly increased at the level of ischemic threshold, suggesting an increase in coronary blood flow to ischemic zones. Nisoldipine possesses anti-ischemic and antianginal activity lasting at least 12 h. This activity seems to be due to an increase in coronary blood flow to ischemic zones.

Gallopamil (GSR) is a new calcium-channel blocker. The anti-ischemic activity of GSR was investigated in 12 patients with stable angina of effort, with fixed ischemic threshold (variations < 15%). After a 7-day washout period, patients were randomized to receive treatment with either GSR 100 mg or placebo twice daily for 7 days. Patients underwent maximal symptom-limited exercise test, 10 W/min on a bicycle, during washout (twice) and after the end of each treatment period. Patients were studied by electrocardiogram and the cuff method for determining systolic blood pressure. After treatment with GSR, ischemic and anginal thresholds were increased for at least 12 h in comparison with placebo (ischemic threshold: GSR 663 +/- 37, placebo 571 +/- 36, p < 0.01; anginal threshold: GSR 708 +/- 32, placebo 646 +/- 38, p < 0.05). Rate-pressure product was not changed at the same levels of exercise, but it was significantly increased during exercise at ischemic threshold. In conclusion, GSR possesses an anti-ischemic and antianginal activity lasting at least 12 h. This activity seems due to an increase of coronary blood flow to ischemic areas.
