We documented the nearshore ray-finned fishes in Puerto Morelos Reef National Park (PMRNP) by sampling 57 localities, including rocky intertidal pools, sandy bottoms, Thalassia beds, coral reefs, artificial reefs, karstic-slab bottoms, demersal-pelagic areas, and sessile-Sargassum patches. We recorded seven species new to Caribbean Mexican waters and one hundred and six species new to the PMRNP, most of which are small cryptobenthic reef fish. The resultant checklist includes 349 species, and specimens of 285 of which (81.7%) have been deposited in an ichthyological museum collection. These include both voucher organisms and with tissue samples for genetic analysis. A comparison with inventories at other localities of the Greater Caribbean indicates that more targeted sampling for cryptobenthic and deep-reef fishes is needed to provide a complete inventory. We also comment on the local use of some species as fishery resources.

Paranebris bauchotae, a new genus and species of sciaenid from the Gulf of Panama is described from three specimens (138-212 mm SL). It is distinguished from all other sciaenids by having granulated tooth plates on the jaws and the premaxillary tooth plates that are exposed laterally of the lower jaw when the mouth is closed. The new genus shares the following characters with the New World genus Nebris: a thick fleshy and cartilage gap present between premaxillary bones where the ascending processes form an A-frame arch; gas bladder with a pair of long U-shaped appendages; and a thick, oval-shaped sagitta with deeply grooved caudal section of the sulcus. Paranebris bauchotae is distinct from all Nebris species in having a firmer interorbital skin and scale cover (spongy to the touch in Nebris), a larger eye (6-7 vs. 8-12 times in head length) and large ctenoid scales (vs. small and cycloid in Nebris). Clipperton Atoll is the most isolated, most westerly and largest coral reef in the tropical eastero Pacific (TEP). We collected and recorded fishes to depths of 60m during a two week visit in April 1994. Previous collections were made late last century andby expeditions from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1956 and 1958. One hundred and fifteen identified species from 89 genera and 43 farnilies are now known from the island. The most speciose families present at the island are moray eels (Muraenidae, 14 species), jacks (Carangidae, 11 species), wrasses (Labridae, 8 species), surgeonfishes (Acanthuridae, 8. species), squirrelfishes (Holocentridae, 5 species), groupers (Serranidae, 5 species), and triggerfishes (Balistidae, 5 species). These represent -14% of the TEP nearshore fish fauna and 40% of its genera. The 115 species inelude 14 offshore pelagic species, 22 inshore pelagic and midwater species, 70 demersal species that live 011 hard reef substrata, and nine demersal species tltat live in or feed on unconsolídated substrata (rubble and sand). Among the IOlnon-oceanie species, 68% ate carnivoreson mobile organisms, 9.2% feed on sessile benthie invertebrates, 12.9% are planktivorous, and 17.8% are benthie feeding herbivores. At least 70 of the non-oceanie speeies appear to have resident (i.e. self sustaining) populatións at the atoll, while 17 species probably are vagrants. Clipperton's fishes inelude 63 rranspacific species (i.e. species that also oceur on the westero side of the Bastero Pacifie Barrier) and 52 species endemie to the TEP. While most (36) of the TEP species oeeur throughout the region, four oceur o¡:¡ly at boh Clipperton and the Revillagigedos, the nearest shoal habitat, 950 km to the north. Nine species or subspeeies Crom seven families a re endemie to Clipperton. They represent 11.3% of Clipperton's demersal shorefishes. The sister speeies of one of them likely is a transpacifie species, while the sister species of the other eight Iikely are TEP speeies. U n mínimo de 70 especies no oceánicas parecen s e r poblaciones residentes (e.g. autosostenidas) de el atolón, mientras que 17 especies probablemente son migratorias. Los peces de ClippertOll incluyen 63 especies transpacíficas (i.e. especies que también se encuentran en el lado occidental de la B3.1Tera del Pacifico Oriental ) y 52 especies son endémicas de el Pacífico Tropical Oriental. Mientras la mayoría (36) de l as especies del PTO se encuentran en toda la región, cuatro se localizan solo en Clipperton y las Islas ReviHagigedos. el más cercano hábitat de grava, 950 km hacia el norte.
