Abstract: The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Electromagnetic showers are reconstructed in a cylindrical scintillating fiber calorimeter inside the magnet and a lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification is achieved by measuring energy loss in the wire chambers and using the flight time of particles between the target and detectors outside the magnet. The signals from all detectors are recorded with flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions with a latency of 3.3 $\mu$s. The detector operates routinely at trigger rates of 40 kHz and data rates of 600 megabytes per second. Abstract: We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for the reaction $\vec{\gamma} p\to K^+\Sigma^0$(1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2-8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable $t$, and a single value of $\Sigma$ was extracted for events produced in the $u$-channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for the reaction in this energy range. For the $t$-channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the $t$-range studied, $-t=(0.1-1.4)~$(GeV/$c$)$^{2}$, with an average value of $\Sigma = 1.00\pm 0.05$. This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the $K^{*}$(892) Regge trajectory. A value of $\Sigma = 0.41 \pm 0.09$ is obtained for the $u$-channel integrated up to $-u=2.0$~(GeV/$c$)$^{2}$.

These measurements are made as a function of momentum transfer $-t$, with significantly higher statistical precision than our earlier $\eta$ measurements, and are the first measurements of $\eta^{\prime}$ in this energy range. We compare the results to theoretical predictions based on $t$--channel quasi-particle exchange. We also compare the ratio of $\Sigma_{\eta}$ to $\Sigma_{\eta^{\prime}}$ to these models, as this ratio is predicted to be sensitive to the amount of $s\bar{s}$ exchange in the production. We find that photoproduction of both $\eta$ and $\eta^{\prime}$ is dominated by natural parity exchange with little dependence on $-t$., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We report on the measurement of the $\gamma p \rightarrow J/\psi p$ cross section from $E_\gamma = 11.8$ GeV down to the threshold at $8.2$ GeV using a tagged photon beam with the GlueX experiment. We find the total cross section falls toward the threshold less steeply than expected from two-gluon exchange models. The differential cross section $d\sigma /dt$ has an exponential slope of $1.67 \pm 0.39$ GeV$^{-2}$ at $10.7$ GeV average energy. The LHCb pentaquark candidates $P_c^+$ can be produced in the $s$-channel of this reaction. We see no evidence for them and set model-dependent upper limits on their branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(P_c^+ \rightarrow J/\psi p)$ and cross sections $\sigma(\gamma p \to P_c^+)\times\mathcal{B}(P_c^+ \to J/\psi p) $., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Data were collected on both plastic and liquid hydrogen targets, and much of the detector has been commissioned. All of the detector systems are now performing at or near design specifications and events are being fully reconstructed, including exclusive production of $\pi^{0}$, $\eta$ and $\omega$ mesons. Abstract: The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: p¯ p→ Λ¯ Λ and p¯ p→ Ξ¯ +Ξ-. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA.

Abstract: We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry \ud Σ\ud for the reaction \ud γ⃗p→K+Σ0\ud (1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected by using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2–8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry \ud Σ\ud was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable \ud t\ud , and a single value of \ud Σ\ud was extracted for events produced in the \ud u\ud channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry \ud Σ\ud for the reaction in this energy range. For the \ud t\ud channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the \ud t\ud range studied, \ud −\ud t\ud =\ud (\ud 0.1\ud –\ud 1.4\ud )\ud (\ud GeV\ud /\ud c\ud )\ud 2\ud , with an average value of \ud Σ\ud =\ud 1.00\ud ±\ud 0.05\ud . This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the \ud K\ud ∗\ud (892) Regge trajectory. A value of \ud Σ\ud =\ud 0.41\ud ±\ud 0.09\ud is obtained for the \ud u\ud channel integrated up to \ud −\ud u\ud =\ud 2.0\ud (\ud GeV\ud /\ud c\ud )\ud 2\ud .

Abstract: The GLUEX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Electromagnetic showers are reconstructed in a cylindrical scintillating fiber calorimeter inside the magnet and a lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification is achieved by measuring energy loss in the wire chambers and using the flight time of particles between the target and detectors outside the magnet. The signals from all detectors are recorded with flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions with a latency of 3.3 mu s. The detector operates routinely at trigger rates of 40 kHz and data rates of 600 megabytes per second. We describe the photon beam, the GLUEX detector components, electronics, data-acquisition and monitoring systems, and the performance of the experiment during the first three years of operation.

Abstract: Aim: To determine if a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) will allow frail older patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to better attain their treatment goals and improve their frailty and quality of life, while being cost-effective. Background(s): There is an increasing number of frail older patients with CKD. Many of them face deteriorating health and functional status, which adversely affects their quality of life. CGA is an effective intervention to improve survival and independence of older people but its effect in people with CKD remains unknown. Method(s): GOAL is a NHMRC-funded cluster randomized controlled trial developed by consumers, clinicians and researchers. It will recruit patients from January 2021 aged >=65 with CKD stage 3-5/5D and a Frailty Index >0.25. The intervention clusters will receive a CGA by a geriatrician to identify medical, social and functional needs, optimize medication prescribing and arrange multidisciplinary referral if required. The primary outcome is attainment of patient determined goals assessed by standardized Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) at 3 months. Secondary outcomes include GAS scores at 6 and 12 months, quality of life (EQ-5D-5L), frailty (Frailty Index - Short Form), transfer to residential aged care facilities, cost effectiveness and safety (causespecific hospitalizations, mortality) at 12 months. Result(s): A two-arm design of 16 clusters with 1:1 allocation (~500 participants) has 90% power to detect a clinically meaningful mean difference in GAS score of 10 units. Conclusion(s): The GOAL trial addresses patient-prioritized outcomes and will be conducted, disseminated and implemented in partnership with patients and their caregivers. This is the first study, internationally, to evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of CGA in improving patient-important health outcomes in frail older people with CKD.

23. Patient priorities and perspectives on incremental haemodialysis: A workshop.

Abstract: Aim: This patient workshop aimed to describe consumer views on key outcomes of interest to inform trial design for a multinational randomised controlled trial comparing safety, clinical and cost efficacy of standard vs incremental haemodialysis. Background(s): Haemodialysis is burdensome, costly and associated with poor quality of life. Starting haemodialysis incrementally at 2 sessions per week may benefit residual kidney function and quality of life whilst remaining safe and cost-effective. Method(s): We convened two 60-minute online workshops in Australia with patients and caregivers to identify key outcomes of interest from a list provided relating to initiation of dialysis using an incremental dialysis approach. New suggestions for key outcomes of interest were also included during the workshop. A points system was used to prioritise outcomes. We identified safety concerns and descriptive themes from the patient's priorities regarding initiation of dialysis. Result(s): This workshop involved 31 attendees (1 caregiver and 30 patients). Patients were currently, previously or soon to be dialysis dependent. All participants agreed that incremental dialysis would be preferred. The top five outcomes of interest were quality of life (56 points), residual kidney function (27 points), mortality (16 points), fluid overload (12.5 points) and ability to work (10 points). Four key themes were identified which underpinned the prioritised outcomes of interest when commencing haemodialysis: unpreparedness and pressure to adapt, disruption to daily living, threats to safety and hope/future planning. Conclusion(s): The concept of incremental haemodialysis is viewed favourably by patients with kidney failure, who considered enriched quality of life as the most important outcome to study. Clinical trials in dialysis must be informed by patient perspectives on key outcomes, trial design, safety and acceptability of intervention.

Abstract: Background: The Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (PDOPPS) is an international, prospective study following persons treated by peritoneal dialysis (PD) to identify modifiable practices associated with improvements in PD technique and person survival. The aim of this study was to assess the representativeness of the Australian cohort included in PDOPPS compared to the complete Australian PD population, as reported to the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant (ANZDATA) Registry. Method(s): Adults with at least one PD treatment reported to ANZDATA Registry during the census period of PDOPPS Phase I (November 2014 to April 2018) were compared to the Australian PDOPPS cohort. The primary outcomes were the representativeness of centres and persons. Secondary outcomes explored the association of person characteristics with consent to study participation. Result(s): After data linkage, 511 PDOPPS participants were compared to 5616 Australians treated with PD. Within centres eligible for PDOPPS, selected centres were similar to other Australian centres. The PDOPPS participants' cohort tended to include older persons, more males, a higher proportion of Caucasians and more persons with higher socioeconomic advantage compared to the Australian PD population. Differences in distribution across sex and ethnicities between the PDOPPS cohort and the overall PD population were in part due to the selection and consent processes, during which females and non-Caucasians were more likely to not consent to PDOPPS participation. Conclusion(s): Sampling methods used in PDOPPS allowed for good national representativeness of the included centres. However, representativeness of the unweighted PDOPPS sample was suboptimal in regard to some participant characteristics.Copyright © The Author(s) 2021.

Abstract: We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry ς for the reaction γ - p→K+ς0(1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected by using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2-8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry ς was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable t, and a single value of ς was extracted for events produced in the u channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry ς for the reaction in this energy range. For the t channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the t range studied, -t=(0.1-1.4)(GeV/c)2, with an average value of ς=1.00±0.05. This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the K∗(892) Regge trajectory. A value of ς=0.41±0.09 is obtained for the u channel integrated up to -u=2.0 (GeV/c)2. © 2020 American Physical Society.

Abstract: We report on the measurement of the beam asymmetry \ud Σ\ud for the reactions \ud →\ud γ\ud p\ud →\ud p\ud η\ud and \ud →\ud γ\ud p\ud →\ud p\ud η\ud ′\ud from the GlueX experiment using an 8.2–8.8-GeV linearly polarized tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory. These measurements are made as a function of momentum transfer \ud −\ud t\ud with significantly higher statistical precision than our earlier \ud η\ud measurements and are the first measurements of \ud η\ud ′\ud in this energy range. We compare the results to theoretical predictions based on \ud t\ud -channel quasiparticle exchange. We also compare the ratio of \ud Σ\ud η\ud to \ud Σ\ud η\ud ′\ud to these models as this ratio is predicted to be sensitive to the amount of \ud s\ud ¯\ud s\ud exchange in the production. We find that photoproduction of both \ud η\ud and \ud η\ud ′\ud is dominated by natural parity exchange with little dependence on \ud −\ud t\ud .

Abstract: We report on the measurement of the γp→J/ψp cross section from Eγ=11.8 GeV down to the threshold at 8.2 GeV using a tagged photon beam with the GlueX experiment. We find that the total cross section falls toward the threshold less steeply than expected from two-gluon exchange models. The differential cross section dσ/dt has an exponential slope of 1.67±0.39 GeV-2 at 10.7 GeV average energy. The LHCb pentaquark candidates Pc+ can be produced in the s channel of this reaction. We see no evidence for them and set model-dependent upper limits on their branching fractions B(Pc+→J/ψp) and cross sections σ(γp→Pc+)×B(Pc+→J/ψp).

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Elevated serum urate levels are associated with progression of chronic kidney disease. Whether urate-lowering treatment with allopurinol can attenuate the decline of the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in patients with chronic kidney disease who are at risk for progression is not known. METHODS: In this randomized, controlled trial, we randomly assigned adults with stage 3 or 4 chronic kidney disease and no history of gout who had a urinary albumin: creatinine ratio of 265 or higher (with albumin measured in milligrams and creatinine in grams) or an eGFR decrease of at least 3.0 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 of body-surface area in the preceding year to receive allopurinol (100 to 300 mg daily) or placebo. The primary outcome was the change in eGFR from randomization to week 104, calculated with the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration creatinine equation. RESULTS: Enrollment was stopped because of slow recruitment after 369 of 620 intended patients were randomly assigned to receive allopurinol (185 patients) or placebo (184 patients). Three patients per group withdrew immediately after randomization. The remaining 363 patients (mean eGFR, 31.7 ml per minute per 1.73 m2; median urine albumin: creatinine ratio, 716.9; mean serum urate level, 8.2 mg per deciliter) were included in the assessment of the primary outcome. The change in eGFR did not differ significantly between the allopurinol group and the placebo group (-3.33 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 per year [95% confidence interval {CI}, -4.11 to -2.55] and -3.23 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 per year [95% CI, -3.98 to -2.47], respectively; mean difference, -0.10 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 per year [95% CI, -1.18 to 0.97]; P = 0.85). Abstract: Background Hyperphosphatemia is associated with increased fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), arterial calcification, and cardiovascular mortality. Effects of phosphate-lowering medication on vascular calcification and arterial stiffness in CKD remain uncertain. Methods To assess the effects of non-calcium-based phosphate binders on intermediate cardiovascular markers, we conducted a multicenter, double-blind trial, randomizing 278 participants with stage 3b or 4 CKD and serum phosphate.1.00 mmol/L (3.10 mg/dl) to 500 mg lanthanum carbonate or matched placebo thrice daily for 96 weeks. We analyzed the primary outcome, carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, using a linear mixed effects model for repeated measures. Secondary outcomes included abdominal aortic calcification and serum and urine markers of mineral metabolism. Results A total of 138 participants received lanthanum and 140 received placebo (mean age 63.1 years; 69% male, 64% White). Mean eGFR was 26.6 ml/min per 1.73 m2; 45% of participants had diabetes and 32% had cardiovascular disease. Mean serum phosphate was 1.25 mmol/L (3.87 mg/dl), mean pulse wave velocity was 10.8 m/s, and 81.3% had abdominal aortic calcification at baseline. At 96 weeks, pulse wave velocity did not differ significantly between groups, nor did abdominal aortic calcification, serum phosphate, parathyroid hormone, FGF23, and 24-hour urinary phosphate. Serious adverse events occurred in 63 (46%) participants prescribed lanthanum and 66 (47%) prescribed placebo. Although recruitment to target was not achieved, additional analysis suggested this was unlikely to have significantly affected the principle findings. Conclusions In patients with stage 3b/4 CKD, treatment with lanthanum over 96 weeks did not affect arterial stiffness or aortic calcification compared with placebo. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Delayed graft function, the requirement for dialysis due to poor kidney function post-transplant, is a frequent complication of deceased donor kidney transplantation and is associated with inferior outcomes and higher costs. Intravenous fluids given during and after transplantation may affect the risk of poor kidney function after transplant. The most commonly used fluid, isotonic sodium chloride (0.9% saline), contains a high chloride concentration, which may be associated with acute kidney injury, and could increase the risk of delayed graft function. Whether using a balanced, low-chloride fluid instead of 0.9% saline is safe and improves kidney function after deceased donor kidney transplantation is unknown. METHODS: BEST-Fluids is an investigator-initiated, pragmatic, registry-based, multi-center, double-blind, randomized controlled trial. The primary objective is to compare the effect of intravenous Plasma-Lyte 148 (Plasmalyte), a balanced, low-chloride solution, with the effect of 0.9% saline on the incidence of delayed graft function in deceased donor kidney transplant recipients. From January 2018 onwards, 800 participants admitted for deceased donor kidney transplantation will be recruited over 3 years in Australia and New Zealand. Participants are randomized 1:1 to either intravenous Plasmalyte or 0.9% saline peri-operatively and until 48 h post-transplant, or until fluid is no longer required; whichever comes first. Follow up is for 1 year. The primary outcome is the incidence of delayed graft function, defined as dialysis in the first 7 days post-transplant. Secondary outcomes include early kidney transplant function (composite of dialysis duration and rate of improvement in graft function when dialysis is not required), hyperkalemia, mortality, graft survival, graft function, quality of life, healthcare resource use, and cost-effectiveness. Abstract: We report on the measurement of the γp→J/ψp cross section from Eγ=11.8 GeV down to the threshold at 8.2 GeV using a tagged photon beam with the GlueX experiment. We find that the total cross section falls toward the threshold less steeply than expected from two-gluon exchange models. The differential cross section dσ/dt has an exponential slope of 1.67±0.39 GeV-2 at 10.7 GeV average energy. The LHCb pentaquark candidates Pc+ can be produced in the s channel of this reaction. We see no evidence for them and set model-dependent upper limits on their branching fractions B(Pc+→J/ψp) and cross sections σ(γp→Pc+)×B(Pc+→J/ψp). © 2019 American Physical Society.

Abstract: We report on the measurement of the beam asymmetry ς for the reactions γ - p→pη and γ - p→pη′ from the GlueX experiment using an 8.2-8.8-GeV linearly polarized tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory. These measurements are made as a function of momentum transfer -t with significantly higher statistical precision than our earlier η measurements and are the first measurements of η′ in this energy range. We compare the results to theoretical predictions based on t-channel quasiparticle exchange. We also compare the ratio of ςη to ςη′ to these models as this ratio is predicted to be sensitive to the amount of ss exchange in the production. We find that photoproduction of both η and η′ is dominated by natural parity exchange with little dependence on -t. © 2019 American Physical Society.

Apart from the proof of principle for natural width and line shape measurements of very narrow resonances with PANDA, the achievable sensitivities are quantified for the concrete example of the charmonium-like X(3872) state discussed to be exotic, and for a larger parameter space of various assumed signal cross-sections, input widths and luminosity combinations.
