15. Room Temperature Magnetoresistance at Low Magnetic Fields in La0.7 Ba0.3 MnO3.

Abstract

This paper examines the possibility of enhancing the room temperature magnetoresistance at low applied magnetic fields in single layer La0.7 Ba0.3 MnO3 thin films. The influence of lattice mismatch strain, as well as the effect of different frequency regimes, on the magnetoresistance is explored. The effects of lattice mismatch strain are studied by measuring the magnetoresistance as a function of the La0.7 Ba0.3 MnO3 film thickness, oxygen annealing, and lattice matched buffer layers. We find that the release of the lattice mismatch strain improves the magnetoresistance at room temperature and at low magnetic fields. In fact, the highest magnetoresistance at room temperature (−1.7% at 500 Oe) has been found for the 1600 Å as-grown La0.7 Ba0.3 MnO3 film, whereas the largest magnetoresistance (−1.9% at 500 Oe) is found at 309 K for the 1000 Å La0.7 Ba0.3 MnO3 film annealed in flowing O2 for 1 h at 900°C. Finally, we find that the microwave magnetoresistance is the same as the dc magnetoresistance when the cavity corrections are applied. In the single layer La0.7 Ba0.3 MnO3 system, the low field magnetoresistance at room temperature is far from being technologically viable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

16. The effect of denervation on leukocyte function in soft tissue infection

Abstract

Background: The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of denervation on leukocyte function in soft-tissue infection in an isolated in vivo ovine flap model. Methods: Fifteen adult ewes were divided into three groups. An island pedicle flap was raised on the right buttock. In group I (no denervation), the cutaneous nerve remained intact, whereas in group II (acute denervation) the nerve was divided acutely. In group III (prolonged denervation) the nerve was divided 7 days before flap elevation. All flaps received intradermal inoculation of 10^7Staphylococcus aureus, and the animals were observed for 96 hours. Results: In both groups II and III, the leukocyte chemiluminescence and chemotaxis were significantly decreased when compared with group I. Furthermore, there was profound impairment of leukocyte functions in group III compared with group II. Group III also had significantly higher bacterial counts, larger septic foci, lower viable leukocyte ratios, and decreased bacterial killing compared with group I. Conclusions: Denervation, particularly over a period of time, results in increased bacterial growth of soft-tissue septic foci. This appears to be due to decreased leukocyte function resulting in diminished bacterial killing. (Surgery 1999; 126:933-8.)

18. Frostbite: experimental and clinical evaluations of treatment

Abstract

Based on experimental and clinical data, this review emphasizes the need for proper treatment of frostbite injuries. Experimentally employed anti-eicosanoid therapy in the modified Weatherly White model enhanced tissue survival, as each agent's inhibitory properties became more specific, when compared to controls. Topical methylprednisolone had a 17.5% tissue survival, while aspirin, Aloe veracream and methimazole had 22.5%, 28.2% and 34.3% survival, respectively (p< 0.05). One hundred fifty-four (154) humans were evaluated as to therapeutic modalities; 56 were treated with topical Aloe veracream and systemic ibuprofen, while 98 were treated with other modalities. Patient demographics were similar. However, hospital stay, tissue loss and morbidity were significantly (p< 0.001) reduced in the Aloeplus ibuprofen group when compared to the other therapeutic modalities, average 13 days v. 20 days, 79.9% healed v. 32.7% healed, and 7% morbidity v. 32.7% morbidity. Tissue loss from frostbite can be reduced if topical Aloe veraand systemic ibuprofen are employed as adjunctive therapies.
