The strength of a shaft-hub hybrid joint is affected by several factors, such as working temperature, interference level and coupling procedure. The first part of this study deals with temperature effect on the static response of shaft-hub hybrid joints. LOCTITE 648 anaerobic adhesive was applied for coupling 42CrMo4 tempered steel shafts to 16CrNi4Pb hardening steel hubs. The performance up to 100°C was experimentally investigated, involving press-fitted as well as shrink-fitted joints with interference up to 0.2%. Adhesive stripping upon coupling, adhesive degradation at high temperature and also frictional contribution decrease were highlighted. Afterwards, in the second part, the question of the adhesive being teared off under high interference was tackled. A hoop-channeled geometry was proposed, to increase the amount of adhesive remaining trapped at the joint interface. Hoop channels in the shafts proved to act as adhesive reservoir, thus facilitating adhesive dragging over the entire engagement length. Their effects on the joint strength were experimentally determined for both press-fitting and shrink-fitting coupling methods. The results, processed by the statistical tools of Analysis of Variance, orthogonality and pairwise tests, indicate the modified geometry is significantly beneficial for high interference press-fitted joints. Conversely, it may even be detrimental for shrink-fitted ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To prevent the preload loss, threadlockers are frequently used in threaded connections (e.g. to avoid self-loosening). Threadlockers are generally anaerobic adhesives and are commercially available either as semi-solid (pre-applied) or as liquid (to be applied just before tightening). Previous research deals with the frictional behavior of threaded joints with applied threadlocker. However, fasteners with applied threadlocker may sometimes operate at variable levels of temperature and humidity. A literature survey indicates there is a lack of data about the strength of joints with added threadlocker when they operate at different temperature/humidity levels with respect to conventional environmental conditions. In this research, the aforementioned issue has been tackled by means of an experimental campaign performed on liquid medium/high strength anaerobic adhesives (respectively, Loctite 243 and Loctite 270) applied to M10, 8.8 grade, zinc-coated screws. Following complete adhesive polymerization, the joints were aged in an environmental chamber, accounting for four combinations of temperature (room temperature – 90°C) and humidity (20–90%) for one week. The joints were then untightened, sampling the breakaway torque. Statistical analyses of the data were carried out, to assess the influence of each parameter on the breakaway torque of the aged joint, thus deriving useful data for design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

shank torque ,tribology ,screw ,bolt - Abstract
This work aims at determining the influence of tribological and stiffness characteristics of a bolted joint on the residual shank torque of the screw. Even if it is commonly accepted to consider such a residual torque equal to half the torque at the thread, the literature lacks experimental data about the topic. The residual shank torque combines with the axial preload and the external loads to bring about the overall stress on the screw. Hence, the higher the residual torque, the lower the admissible external load for given size and class of the screw. From there stems the need for an analytical tool allowing the designer to calculate the residual torque as a function of the key parameters of the joint.

Closed intramedullary nailing has become the "gold standard" in the treatment of displaced fractures of the tibial shaft. The material of choice for the manufacturing of intramedullary nails is Ti-alloy, while the structural performance requested to these components is steadily growing. Validation procedures pertaining to these components comprehend both compression and torsion tests. Finite element analysis could help shrinking down the time required for new product development, as fewer full scale experimental tests would be needed in the early design stages. In order for numerical models to be representative of the actual test, a number of parameters has to be accurately chosen: particularly, contact modeling must be fine-tuned based on experimental data. This contribution provides guidelines for the correct contact settings to use, referring to the Ansys software.

- Abstract
This paper focuses on cross-section optimization of both rectilinear and curvilinear beams. In particular, analytical models were developed, in order to detect how circular section resistance can be modified following a suitable cut. In fact, removing material from the furthest zone from the neutral axis, may even result in an increase of the section resistance modulus, with consequent beneficial reduction of the maximum stresses. The analytical model outcomes were confirmed by numerical analyses. This study deals with several applicative cases: in almost all of them a stress reduction was achieved, except for removing material from the extrados. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The Strategic Implementation Plan of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) proposed six Action Groups. After almost three years of activity, many achievements have been obtained through commitments or collaborative work of the Action Groups. However, they have often worked in silos and, consequently, synergies between Action Groups have been proposed to strengthen the triple win of the EIP on AHA. The paper presents the methodology and current status of the Task Force on EIP on AHA synergies. Synergies are in line with the Action Groups’ new Renovated Action Plan (2016-2018) to ensure that their future objectives are coherent and fully connected. The outcomes and impact of synergies are using the Monitoring and Assessment Framework for the EIP on AHA (MAFEIP). Eight proposals for synergies have been approved by the Task Force: Five cross-cutting synergies which can be used for all current and future synergies as they consider overarching domains (appropriate polypharmacy, citizen empowerment, teaching and coaching on AHA, deployment of synergies to EU regions, Responsible Research and Innovation), and three cross-cutting synergies focussing on current Action Group activities (falls, frailty, integrated care and chronic respiratory diseases). © 2017, Serdi and Springer-Verlag France.

The aim of this study was to deepen the evaluation of the effectiveness of LVA by performing a metaanalysis to provide information about its utility in specific anatomical sites, clinical stages, duration of lymphedema, and surgical technique. A systematic literature search using PubMed/Medline, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Database was performed in November 2019. Only original studies in which exclusively LVA was performed for primary and/or secondary lymphedema in humans were eligible for data extraction. A meta-analysis was performed on articles with a well-defined endpoint and a subgroup analysis was conducted in relation to surgical technique, duration of lymphedema, stage of pathology. Forty-eight studies, including 6 clinical trials and 42 lowrisk bias observational studies were included in our meta-analysis. 1,281 subjects were included and the majority of articles reported a pre-post analysis. Lymphaticovenular anastomosis appears to result effectively in treatment of lymphedema with an odds ratio of 0.07 (CI: 0.04, 0.13, p<0.001). All subgroup meta-analyses were statistically significant for LVAs specifically with regard to anatomical site, clinical stage, duration of LE, or type of microsurgical procedure (p<0.05). Our meta-analysis confirmed the efficacy of LVAs for the treatment of lymphedema, even when subgroup analysis was performed for clinical stage, duration of pathology, anatomical site of lymphedema, or type of microsurgical procedure. Further prospective trials with a common clearly defined outcome measure are warranted for an unbiased evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SHEAR strength ,ADHESIVES - Abstract
The aim of this research is to study the effect of the interference level and of the coupling procedure on the shear strength of Loctite 648 anaerobic adhesive. The tests involved shaft-hub joints with a quite large interference range and joined by a broad range of coupling strategies, which is one of the main issues of novelty of this research. 42CrMo4 tempered steel shaft specimens and 16CrNi4Pb hardening steel hub samples were used. Two factors were considered: the interference level and the assembly strategy. Four different levels of specific interference were analyzed up to a maximum value of 0.22%, performing five replications per level. Experimental trials were carried out with different coupling procedures: using press-fitted and shrink-fitted joints. Using the first procedure, a high level of interference induces scratches on the sample surfaces. These are conversely not produced by shrink-fitting. Some tests were devoted to friction coefficient estimation, thus also assessing the lubricating properties of the adhesive. Particularly, dry couplings and couplings and de-couplings with not yet cured adhesive were run to address this point. The results were processed by statistical methods, to assess the influence of the studied factors on the adhesive strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Threaded joints are widely used in the automotive industry, where threadlockers can be applied to prevent self-loosening and to possibly achieve a friction drop upon tightening. This study deals with this topic, investigating threadlocker tribological response before polymerization takes place. These lubricating properties are usually not considered in adhesive datasheets, but can be highly beneficial from the point of view of the achievable preload, thus preventing self-loosening. The topic was tackled experimentally, running an extensive campaign that involved a medium and a strong threadlocker (LOCTITE 243 and LOCTITE 270, respectively), used for tightening zinc-plated and black-oxidized screws. The testing procedure was inspired by a protocol being used by most manufacturers in the automotive field: in particular, the impacts of pre-tightening speed and of the time interval between pre-tightening and final tightening were investigated. The retrieved results indicate a lubricating effect of the medium threadlocker with achievable friction coefficients in the order of 0.11. Moreover, for both the threadlockers, a generally decreasing trend for the thread friction upon tightening for increasing time interval before tightening was observed. This is a particularly original outcome that could have remarkable implications for optimizing the assembly tasks of large sets of bolts.

Synergies are in line with the Action Groups' new Renovated Action Plan (2016-2018) to ensure that their future objectives are coherent and fully connected.

Synergies are in line with the Action Groups' new Renovated Action Plan (2016-2018) to ensure that their future objectives are coherent and fully connected.

Interval nodes (IN) are defined as lymph nodes that lie along the course of lymphatic collecting vessels between a primary tumor site and a draining node field. Sometimes INs contain metastases and a consensus on their surgical management is needed. Therefore, to optimize the surgical management of melanoma patients with metastatic lymphatic involvement, especially when the sentinel lymph node biopsy identifies an unusual drainage field, we identified patients treated at the Department of Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery of Bari between July 1994 and December 2012 identified with a primary-cutaneous melanoma who underwent lymphoscintigraphy and subsequent positive-IN the lymphadenectomy to evaluate the impact of this procedure on overall survival and disease-free-period. 51 patients presented INs, and lymphadenectomy (LA) of the subsequent lymphatic field was performed in 13 subjects with positive-IN. In 4 cases additional lymphatic metastases were detected in the usual basin beyond the IN+. Recurrence-free period and survival rate at 5 years were higher in patients with positive-IN who underwent LA than in subjects who underwent LA due to positive lymph nodes in the usual field. Immediate lymphadenectomy of the subsequent lymphatic field in patients with positive-INs may afford patients earlier stage treatment of their disease and improved prognosis.

- Abstract
This article focuses on the static structural analysis of a tibial intramedullary nail, carried out by the finite element method. The investigated subject is concerned with the issue of frictional contacts that, generating a non-linear problem, play an important role in numerical analyses. Experimental tests were also developed on tibial intramedullary nail specimens. The experimental results, in terms of force–displacement, were used to calibrate and validate the finite element analysis, by tuning the contact parameters available in the software.

Synergies are in line with the Action Groups' new Renovated Action Plan (2016-2018) to ensure that their future objectives are coherent and fully connected.

The aim of this study is to analyze how the fatigue behavior of DMLS built AlSi10Mg may be affected by heat and surface treatments. A three-by-three factorial plan has been arranged for this purpose. Particularly, regarding the heat treatment, three levels were considered (as built, age hardening and stress relief), whereas, for the surface treatment, three levels were investigated (micro shot-peening, micro shot-peening plus fine blasting and DMLS production, machining and lapping). Ten specimens per type were built with vertical orientation and with a cylindrical smooth geometry. 90 samples were tested on a four-point rotating bending machine, aiming at the determination of S-N curves in the finite life domain. The experimental results were statistically processed and compared. The outcome was that heat treatment significantly affects the fatigue response and stress relief may have a detrimental impact. Fractographic studies were performed as well, to individuate the crack initiation points. Finally, density measurements were carried out to quantify the porosity level.

The aim of this study is to estimate the relative displacement between the spindle nose and the clamping vice in a rotary transfer machine due to temperature variations. The study was focused on the relative displacements caused by temperature variations produced by two heat sources: the environment around the machine and the three-axis computer numerical control station during the duty cycle. Regarding the last point, an analytical model was developed, in order to account for different thermal sources inside the three-axis module (e.g., ball-screws, rolling bearings, and guideways friction heat, as well as heat generation in the motor). The complete numerical model was calibrated and successfully validated. A comparison was run between numerical results and experimental data in the framework of trials involving a newly developed transfer machine. Finally, the complete model, considering the combination of both the heat sources, has made it possible to estimate spindle nose-clamp relative displacement during a typical working day, highlighting that the radial displacement risks affecting seriously the accuracy of a workpiece.

This paper deals with the novel topic of the fatigue response of additively manufactured Maraging Stainless Steel CX. A two-by-two factorial plan was arranged, to experimentally assess the effects of heat treatment and machining on the fatigue strength in both finite and infinite life domains. The two factors were regarded as on–off, taking the untreated unmachined condition as a reference for comparisons. Cylindrical specimens with vertical build orientation were involved in the fatigue campaign under four-point rotating bending. The results indicate that the fatigue strength may be remarkably incremented (up to five times) with respect to the as received conditions, especially thanks to surface smoothing and taking advantage of a very low porosity level. Heat treatment strengthening mechanisms were also interpreted in the light of optical and electron microscope observations. Fatigue enhancement arises from precipitate size increment throughout the conducted heat treatment, although the fracture mode turns to be more brittle.

Threadlockers are widely used in threaded connections in order to prevent the preload loss (e.g., due to self-loosening). Threadlockers are commercially available in different formulations, such as liquid (to be applied just before tightening) or semi-solid (pre-applied on the screw). Previous research focused on both the frictional behaviour at tightening of the joint with applied threadlocker, and on the breakaway torque of the joint after complete polimerization of the threadlocker. Nonetheless, threadlocker-enhanced joints are often operated at variable levels of temperature and humidity. A literature survey reveals lack of data about the residual strength of threadlocker-enhanced joints after operation at temperature/humidity levels different by the reference ambient levels. The present research tackles the aforementioned issue, by means of an experimental campaign carried out on a liquid medium-strength anaerobic adhesive applied to metric, 8.8 grade, Zinc-coated screws. Upon complete polimerization of the adhesive, the joints have been aged in an environmental chamber at four different combinations of temperature (RT – 90°C) and humidity (20%–90%) for one week. The joints have then been unlocked, sampling the breakaway torque. Statistical analysis of the data has been carried out to determine the significance of each parameter on the breakaway torque of the aged joint.

The present paper investigates the influence of several design parameters on the frictional response at the underhead in a bolted joint, involving high strength socket-head screws: M8 class 14.9 with black oxidization coating. The experimentation deals with different underhead materials (Steel, Aluminium), lubrication conditions (dry, lubricated) and repeated tightening operations. The awareness of the actual friction coefficients, depending on the current operating parameters, is a useful tool, to support the most proper design of a bolted joint. The experimental campaign has been run by a testing rig for friction coefficient estimation, complying with the recommendations by International Standard ISO 16047 and the automotive Standard VW01131-1 in order to consider the effect of the tightening speed normally adopted in the automotive field. The axial preload generated upon tightening induces a high pressure on the remarkably small underhead surface of the utilized high strength socket-head screws and is therefore likely to affect the tribological response. Consequently, some differences may be expected with respect to the tribological behavior of screws belonging to lower strength grades. This is particularly true, when tightening is done without bearing lubrication, and through several repeated assembly-disassembly operations. The collected data have been processed by the tools of ANOVA and F-Test, in order to assess the significance of each factor, as well as related interactions.

Bolted joints are highly loaded components and serious issues may arise from improper fastening and in particular from too high or too low preload. Friction at the underhead plays an important role, as it significantly affects the achievable preload for fixed and controlled tightening torque. In addition, multiple tightening is usually performed on connecting rod screws, which may be a further source of friction increment. This study investigates the effect of two surface treatments, shot-peening and deep-rolling, on the tribological properties upon bolt fastening. This topic was tackled experimentally and the campaign involved MJ9 X 1 4 g grade 13.9 36 NiCrMo connecting rod screws, in both lubricated and dry conditions. The results, processed by statistical tools, indicate that deep-rolling does not affect friction, whereas shot-peening yields significant benefits. As an effect of the generation of dimples and multiple contacts, it is able to lower (up to 25%) the bearing frictional coefficient in lubricated conditions, also making the friction level independent of the number of re-tightenings. For a dry surface, an even higher friction decrease (up to 30%) is achieved. Without lubrication, the friction coefficient keeps increasing for the incremented number of tightenings, but the increase rate is lowered with respect to the untreated surface.

The present paper investigates the influence of several design parameters on the frictional response of a bolted joint, involving screws from strength grades 8.8 to 12.9, with black oxidization coating or zinc coatings. The experimentation deals with different underhead and nut materials (cast iron, aluminum), lubrication conditions (dry, lubricated, two different threadlockers: medium and strong), roughness condition in the underhead (cast, machined, painted, underhead washers) and cosidering also the effect of repeated tightenings. The friction coefficients of the actual application, retrieved based on the relevant operating parameters, are needed to support a correct design. The experimentation has been carried out by a purposely developed specimen, consisting of two parts: an instrumented sleeve, with a double array of strain gauges capable of sampling both the axial preload and the underhead torque, and interchangeable underhead washers. The testing apparatus is provided with a device which allows preventing undesired rotation of the washers. The washer material and surface treatment change among the different specimen sets. The tightening torque is applied by means of a 10-120Nm digital torque wrench. The collected data have been processed by the tools of ANoVa. Such tools allowed assessing the significance of each factor, as well as related interactions.

This contribution deals with the efficient numerical modeling of tapped thread joints. Commercial FE packages provide different strategies to tackle the problem of modeling threaded joints, which is a recurrent one for the design engineer. Different modeling techniques are characterised by how the screw is modeled: either three-dimensional elements (thetra, hexa or wedge) or mono-dimensional elements (beam) can be used. In the case of three-dimensional approaches, the thread helix is seldom modeled: the actual geometry is often replaced by a plain cylinder and a suitable choice of contact settings between the screw and the “threaded” hole. In the case of road vehicles, due to the high number of threaded connections to be modeled, it is paramount to reach a trade-off between modeling accuracy and computational effort. This paper aims at comparing two modeling approaches, namely a three dimensional approach (baseline) and a mono-dimensional one (simplified model). Based on several criteria, such as equivalent stress on the screw shank, pressure distribution at the interface of the plates and in the underhead region, optimal contact settings for the simplified model are suggested. These settings allow replicating the results provided by the three-dimensional approach for given load case. The comparison is carried out on single lap, single screw joints, by the ANSYS R17 software. The methodology can be easily extended to other softwares or joint configurations.

During operation, the overall stress state of a screw is a function of the direct stress generated by the axial preload, and the external loads, plus the shear stress due to the residual shank torque. All in all, the higher the residual torque, the lower the direct stress the screw can withstand prior to yielding. The residual shank torque stems from the tightening torque, part of which flows through the shank and it is, only partially, released after wrench removal, thanks to springback phenomena involving both the screw and the joined elements. This phenomenon has been tackled in a previous experimental and analytical work by the authors, which investigated the effect of the stiffness and frictional parameters of the joint on the amount of residual shank torque. Such research was based on a sleevelike specimen, and, in fact, the results were strictly applicable to the case of slender cylindrical joint. The present contribution aims at assessing the effect of the same parameters on the residual shank torque, namely: the ratio between the torsional stiffness of the screw and of the plates, the friction coefficients (underhead and thread). Nonetheless, thanks to a novel three-dimensional finite element model, the parameters have been varied in a much wider range, in order to analyze all the likely operating conditions. The model is capable of predicting the residual shank torque for both the cases of slender and thick joint (plate-like joint). The model has been developed in the Ansys R17 software, but the methodology can be extended to other codes with minimal changes.

Higher engagement length over screw diameter ratios (ER), are recommended to avoid thread shearing off in applications, where high strength steel screws are tightened into nuts of materials with lower strength. The aim of this study was to determine the frictional coefficients of bolts for three different engagement ratios, to be compared to those of a commercial threaded insert, whose use is also suggested for the aforementioned application. The tests were run over five repeated tightenings, on M6 class 12.9, black oxidized screws in lubricated conditions. Retightening does not affect friction, whereas ER does and the insert exhibits the highest friction coefficient. The ER threshold to avoid thread stripping was also estimated by experimental, numerical and analytical methods.

The main motivations for this study arise from the need for an assessment of the fatigue performance of DMLS produced Maraging Steel MS1, when it is used in the “as fabricated” state. The literature indicates a lack of knowledge from this point of view, moreover the great potentials of the additive process may be more and more incremented, if an easier and cheaper procedure could be used after the building stage. The topic has been tackled experimentally, investigating the impact of heat treatment, machining and micro-shot-peening on the fatigue strength with respect to the “as built” state. The results indicate that heat treatment significantly enhances the fatigue response, probably due to the relaxation of the post-process tensile residual stresses. Machining can also be effective, but it must be followed (not preceded) by micro-shot-peening, to benefit from the compressive residual stress state generated by the latter.
