In the framework of the "Smart ElectroMagnetic Environment" (SEME), an innovative strategy leveraging Equivalence Source concepts is introduced for enhancing the performance of large-scale outdoor wireless communication systems. The proposed Opportunistic Sources Synthesis (OSS) approach is aimed at unconventionally synthesizing the primary source (i.e., the base transceiver station (BTS) antenna array), so that the complex scattering phenomena induced in the surrounding scatterers are profitably exploited to enhance the received power within user-defined regions of interest (RoIs). To yield a computationally feasible synthesis process, an innovative "Embedded-plus-Environment Patterns" (EPEPs) method is introduced. A set of representative numerical examples, concerned with realistic large-scale outdoor scenarios, is presented to assess the effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed optimization-driven approach for a realistic SEME implementation.

The design of sub-arrayed phased arrays (PAs) with sub-array-only amplitude and phase controls that afford arbitrary-shaped power patterns matching reference ones is addressed. Such a synthesis problem is formulated in the power pattern domain and an innovative complex-excitations clustering method, which is based on the decomposition of the reference power pattern in a number of elementary patterns equal to the array elements, is presented. A set of representative results is reported to illustrate the features of the proposed approach as well as to assess its effectiveness in comparison with benchmark results from the state-of-the-art (SoA) excitation matching-based clustering methods.

The design of irregular planar phased arrays (PAs) characterized by a highly-modular architecture is addressed. By exploiting the property of self-replicating tile shapes, also known as rep-tiles, the arising array layouts consist of tiles having different sizes, but equal shape, all being generated by assembling a finite number of smaller and congruent copies of a single elementary building-block. Towards this end, a deterministic optimization strategy is used so that the arising rep-tile arrangement of the planar PA is an optimal trade-off between complexity, costs, and fitting of user-defined requirements on the radiated power pattern, while guaranteeing the complete overlay of the array aperture. As a representative instance, such a synthesis method is applied to tile rectangular apertures with L-shaped tromino tiles. A set of representative results, concerned with ideal and real antenna models, as well, is reported for validation purposes, but also to point out the possibility/effectiveness of the proposed approach, unlike state-of-the-art tiling techniques, to reliably handle large-size array apertures., Comment: 56 pages, 22 figures

A method for the analysis of the power pattern of phased array antennas (PAs) based on the quantum Fourier transform (QFT) is proposed. The computation of the power pattern given the set of complex excitations of the PA elements is addressed within the quantum computing (QC) framework by means of a customized procedure that exploits the quantum mechanics principles and theory. A representative set of numerical results, yielded with a quantum computer emulator, is reported and discussed to assess the reliability of the proposed method by pointing out its features in comparison with the classical approach based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), as well., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures

An innovative millimeter-wave (mm-wave) microstrip edge-fed antenna (EFA) for 77 GHz automotive radars is proposed. The radiator contour is modeled with a sinusoidal spline-shaped (SS) profile characterized by a reduced number of geometrical descriptors, but still able to guarantee a high flexibility in the modeling for fulfilling challenging user-defined requirements. The SS-EFA descriptors are effectively and efficiently optimized with a customized implementation of the System-by-Design (SbD) paradigm. The synthesized EFA layout, integrated within a linear arrangement of identical replicas to account for the integration into the real radar system, exhibits suitable impedance matching, isolation, polarization purity, and stability of the beam shaping/pointing within the target band [76:78][GHz]. The experimental assessment, carried out with a Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) system on a printed circuit board (PCB)-manufactured prototype, assess the reliability of the outcomes from the full-wave (FW) simulations as well as the suitability of the synthesized SS-EFA for automotive radars.

The optimal planning of electromagnetic skins (EMSs) installed on the building facades to enhance the received signal strength, thus the wireless coverage and/or the quality-of-service (QoS) in large-scale urban areas, is addressed. More specifically, a novel instance of the System-by-Design (SbD) paradigm is proposed towards the implementation of a smart electromagnetic environment (SEME) where low-cost passive static reflective skins are deployed to enhance the level of the power received within selected regions-of-interest (RoIs). Thanks to the ad-hoc customization of the SbD functional blocks, which includes the exploitation of a digital twin (DT) for the accurate yet fast assessment of the wireless coverage condition, effective solutions are yielded. Numerical results, dealing with real-world test-beds, are shown to assess the capabilities, the potentialities, and the current limitations of the proposed EMSs planning strategy.

The design of modular, passive, and static artificial metasurfaces to be used as electromagnetic skins (EMSs) of buildings for improving the coverage in urban millimeter-wave communication scenarios is addressed. Towards this end, an ad-hoc design strategy is presented to determine optimal trade-off implementative solutions that assure a suitable coverage of the areas of interest, where the signal from the base station is too weak, with the minimum complexity. More specifically, the admissible surface in the building facade is first partitioned into tiles, which are the minimum-size elements of the artificial coating (i.e., the building block of an EMS). Then, the search for the optimal EMS layout (i.e., the minimum number and the positions of the tiles to be installed) is carried out with a binary multi-objective optimization method. Representative numerical results are reported and discussed to point out the features and the potentialities of the EMS solution in the smart electromagnetic environment (SEME) as well as the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

An innovative process for the design of static passive smart skins (SPSSs) is proposed to take into account, within the synthesis, the electromagnetic (EM) interactions due to their finite (macro-level) size and aperiodic (micro-scale) layouts. Such an approach leverages on the combination of an inverse source (IS) formulation, to define the SPSS surface currents, and of an instance of the System-by-Design paradigm, to synthesize the unit cell (UC) descriptors suitable for supporting these currents. As for this latter step, an enhanced Artificial Intelligence (IA)-based digital twin (DT) is built to efficiently and reliably predict the relationships among the UCs and the non-uniform coupling effects arising when the UCs are irregularly assembled to build the corresponding SPSS. Towards this end and unlike state-of-the-art approaches, an aperiodic finite small-scale model of the SPSS is derived to generate the training database for the DT implementation. A set of representative numerical experiments, dealing with different radiation objectives and smart skin apertures, is reported to assess the reliability of the conceived design process and to illustrate the radiation features of the resulting layouts, validated with accurate full-wave simulations, as well.

The design of a conical phased array antenna for air traffic control (ATC) radar systems is addressed in this work. The array, characterized by a fully digital beam-forming (DBF) architecture, is composed of equal vertical modules consisting of linear sparse arrays able to generate on receive multiple instantaneous beams pointing along different elevation directions. The synthesis problem is cast in the Compressive Sensing (CS) framework to achieve the best trade-off between the antenna complexity (i.e., minimum number of array elements and/or radio frequency components) and radiation performance (i.e., matching of a set of reference patterns). Towards this aim, the positions of the array elements and the set of complex element excitations of each beam are jointly defined through a customized CS-based optimization tool. Representative numerical results, concerned with ideal as well as real antenna models, are reported and discussed to validate the proposed design strategy and point out the features of the deigned modular sparse arrays also in comparison with those obtained from conventional arrays with uniformly spaced elements.

Thinning antenna arrays through quantum Fourier transform (QFT) is proposed. Given the lattice of the candidate locations for the array elements, the problem of selecting which antenna location has to be either occupied or not by an array element is formulated in the quantum computing (QC) framework and then addressed with an ad-hoc design method based on a suitable implementation of the QFT algorithm. The computationally-efficient solution of fully non-linear microwave inverse scattering problems (ISPs) is addressed. An innovative System-by-Design (SbD) based method is proposed to enable, for the first time to the best of the authors knowledge, an effective, robust, and time-efficient exploitation of an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to perform the global minimization of the data-mismatch cost function. According to the SbD paradigm as suitably applied to ISPs, the proposed approach founds on (i) a smart re-formulation of the ISP based on the definition of a minimum-dimensionality and representative set of degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) and on (ii) the artificial-intelligence (AI)-driven integration of a customized global search technique with a digital twin (DT) predictor based on the Gaussian Process (GP) theory. Representative numerical and experimental results are provided to assess the effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed approach also in comparison with competitive state-of-the-art inversion techniques.

An innovative approach for the synthesis of inexpensive holographic smart electromagnetic (EM) skins with advanced beamforming features is proposed. The complex multiscale smart skin design is formulated within the Generalized Sheet Transition Condition (GSTC) framework as a combination of a mask-constrained isophoric inverse source problem and a micro-scale susceptibility dyadic optimization. The solution strategy integrates a local search procedure based on the iterative projection technique (IPT) and a System-by-Design (SbD)-based optimization loop for the identification of optimal metasurface descriptors matching the desired surface currents. The performance and the efficiency of the proposed approach are assessed in a set of representative test cases concerned with different smart skin apertures and target pattern masks.

The modular design of planar phased arrays arranged on orthogonal polygon-shaped apertures is addressed and a new method is proposed to synthesize domino-tiled arrays fitting multiple, generally conflicting, requirements. Starting from an analytic procedure to check the domino-tileability of the aperture, two multi-objective optimization techniques are derived to efficiently and effectively deal with small and medium/large arrays depending on the values of the bounds for the cardinality of the solution space of the admissible clustered solutions. A set of representative numerical examples is reported to assess the effectiveness of the proposed synthesis approach also through full-wave simulations when considering non-ideal models for the radiating elements of the array.
