Abstract

The ever-increasing demands in traffic fueled by bandwidth hungry applications are pushing data centers to their limits challenging the capacity and scalability of currently established transceiver and switching technologies in data center interconnection (DCI) networks. Coherent optics emerged as a promising solution for inter-DCIs offering unprecedented capacities closer to data centers and relaxing the power budget restrictions of the link. QAMeleon, an EU funded R and D project, is developing a new generation of faster and greener sliceable bandwidth-variable electro-optical transceivers and WSS switches able to handle up to 128 Gbaud optical signals carrying flexible M-QAM constellations and novel modulation techniques. A summary of the progress on the QAMeleon transponder and Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) concepts is presented in this paper.

Abstract

We demonstrate the hybrid integration of a multi-format tunable transmitter and a coherent optical receiver based on optical polymers and InP electronics and photonics for next generation metro and core optical networks. The transmitter comprises an array of two InP Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) with 42 GHz bandwidth and two passive PolyBoards at the back- and front-end of the device. The back-end PolyBoard integrates an InP gain chip, a Bragg grating and a phase section on the polymer substrate capable of 22 nm wavelength tunability inside the C-band and optical waveguides that guide the light to the inputs of the two InP MZMs. The front-end PolyBoard provides the optical waveguides for combing the In-phase and Quadrature-phase modulated signals via an integrated thermo-optic phase shifter for applying the pi/2 phase-shift at the lower arm and a 3-dB optical coupler at the output. Two InP-double heterojunction bipolar transistor (InP-DHBT) 3-bit power digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are hybridly integrated at either side of the MZM array chip in order to drive the IQ transmitter with QPSK, 16-QAM and 64-QAM encoded signals. The coherent receiver is based on the other side on a PolyBoard, which integrates an InP gain chip and a monolithic Bragg grating for the formation of the local oscillator laser, and a monolithic 90° optical hybrid. This PolyBoard is further integrated with a 4-fold InP photodiode array chip with more than 80 GHz bandwidth and two high-speed InP-DHBT transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) with automatic gain control. The transmitter and the receiver have been experimentally evaluated at 25Gbaud over 100 km for mQAM modulation showing bit-error-rate (BER) performance performance below FEC limit.

Abstract

We propose a pattern recognition approach to analyze subsurface radar images and recognize the hyperbolic signatures produced by targets. After enhancing these signatures using a wavelet denoising procedure, pixels are grouped into significant hyperbolic shapes by fuzzy clustering. The approach also provides a validation measure for each recognized shape using so-called 'shell thickness.' Excellent experimental results justify the use of this algorithm for automatic interpretation of subsurface radar images. Index Terms--FCQS term, fuzzy clustering, ground penetrating radar (GPR), image interpretation.

Abstract

International audience; The foundations of the Roman Theatre "Zairo" were discovered, about 1.5 m deep, in 1775 during the land reclamation works of the swampy aren of Prato della Valle - Padua. The theatre wns completely destroyed during Middle Age and Rinascimento by people who used it like building material quarry for the new S. Giustina Clwrch.Today the aren is partially occupied by a channel, a lawn and a big asphalted square, parts of the foundations, the radial walls, are still visible at the bottom of the channel used to reclaiming the area.In the square and the lawn were carried out three geophysical surveys: the first employing capacitive electrodes, the second with a multifrequency GPR array (200 - 600 MHz), in mono and bistatic mode, and the last with multielectrode system.All methods gave good results, theatre structural elements, like the radial walls under the lawn and asphalted road and the foundations of the orchestra and scena, have been resolved. The capacitive electrodes survey covered only a part of GPR area. ln the overlapping area we could see a good correlation between the two methods results. GPR could map structures in the area not covered by Capacitive and Multielectrode systems, confirmed the results and allowed to better locate a powered electrical line.; Nel 1775, durante i lavori di bonifica e risistemazione paesaggistico-ambientale dell'area paludosa del Prato della Valle, vennero alla luce le fondazioni del teatro romano "Zairo" ad una profondità di circa 1.5 metri. Il teatro venne completamente distrutto durante il Medio Evo ed il Rinascimento ed il materiale riutilizzato per Ia costruzione della vicina Basilica di S. Giustina.Attualmente In parte centrale del Prato è occupata dall'isola Memmia, circondata da una canaletta, nel cui letto sono visibili i resti delle fondazioni a raggiera del teatro, da un marciapiede lastricato e da aiuole allungate che separano quest'area dal resto del Prato interamente asfaltato.In una parte del Prato vennero condotte tre indagini geofisiche impiegando degli elettrodi capacitivi, un radar multifrequenziale (200 e 600 MHz) com antenne ad array mono e bistatiche ed il sistema multielettrodo.Tutti i metodi fornirono risultati soddisfacenti nel senso che si sono potuti individuare gli elementi strutturali del teatro quali i muri radiali, ricoperti dal tappeto erboso e dall'asfalfo e le fondazioni dell'orchestra e della scena.Anche se l'area prospettata con gli elettrodi capacitivi è risultata minore di quella ricoperta dalle misure radar, si è potuta constatare Ia buona correlazione dei risultati, confermanti tra l'altro dalle misure multielettrodo in resistività e Polarizzazione Inotta, quest'ultima permettendo anche di individuare un cavo elettrico sepolto ed alimentato.
