In the context of the 150th anniversary of the biological station of Roscoff, we describe here how cellular and molecular biology using marine metazoans has been developed at the station during the last 50 years. The discipline was first initiated by an interest in the endocrinology of marine invertebrates and allowed the characterization of the famous Maturation-Promoting Factor (MPF) in echinoderms. During this exciting period of time the biological station focused the interest of the international cell cycle scientific community. Then, discoveries made at the station played a founding role in developing applied research and creating companies offering innovative therapeutic solutions. Later, the scientific dynamics using marine metazoans has been perpetuated by studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms, such as ionic membrane transports or mRNA translation, that govern the life of cells and embryos. More recently, acquiring metazoan genomes has allowed researchers to analyze marine metazoan embryonic development in an evolutionary context. Finally, the Biological Station contributes to transfer this essential knowledge through international courses, which prepare the young generations for future scientific challenges.

International audience; Echinoderms, a sister group of chordates, is a group of exclusively marine animals. TheEchinodermata is an ancient phylum dating to at least 450 million years old and includingmore than 10,000 extant species present throughout the world’s oceans. The modernechinoderms belong to five classes: Echinoidea (e.g., sea urchins and sand dollars),Asteroidea (e.g., starfishes), Ophiuroidea (e.g., brittle stars), Holothuroidea (e.g., seacucumbers) and Crinoidea (e.g., sea lilies and feather stars).Sea urchin represents a well-established marine model in biological sciences. This chapterprovides a general description of echinoderms and focuses on the significant advances in celland developmental biology that the study of sea urchins has made possible. During the lastdecade, many genomic data concerning echinoderms and sea urchins in particular havebecome available. These new molecular tools have facilitated gene regulation analysis duringdevelopment and have boosted the possibilities offered by sea urchins as experimentalmodels.

The maintenance of paracellular barriers in invertebrate epithelia depends on the integrity of specific cell adhesion structures known as septate junctions (SJ). Multiple studies in Drosophila have revealed that these junctions have a stereotyped architecture resulting from the association in the lateral membrane of a large number of components. However, little is known about the dynamic organisation adopted by these multi-protein complexes in living tissues. We have used live imaging techniques to show that the Ly6 protein Boudin is a component of these adhesion junctions and can diffuse systemically to associate with the SJ of distant cells. We also observe that this protein and the claudin Kune-kune are endocytosed in epidermal cells during embryogenesis. Our data reveal that the SJ contain a set of components exhibiting a high membrane turnover, a feature that could contribute in a tissue-specific manner to the morphogenetic plasticity of these adhesion structures.

Creo que a estas alturas resulta pertinente preguntarse si la ciudad representa verdaderamente un estadio superior en la maduración de nuestra relativa autonomía frente al mundo natural o, lo que es lo mismo, de nuestra civilización, o es simplemente la apariencia (no necesariamente excelente) bajo la que se consagran de manera recurrente y peculiar los sistemas que alcanzan algún grado de hegemonía en el orden social y económico. Esta pregunta estaría relacionada con otra aún más radical: ¿existe vida (vida urbana sobre todo) más allá del capitalismo? Que tendría una respuesta no menos radical: sólo es posible algo que podría considerarse vida urbana cuando el capitalismo haya sido superado. Mientras tanto podemos hablar de procesos, cada vez más intensos y extensos, de urbanización.

El precio de la vivienda lleva camino de convertirse en uno de los arcanos de la era posindustrial. En esta época dominada por el conocimiento racional, esta dimensión tan pegada a lo cotidiano se escapa a las explicaciones y a los ensayos predictivos de los expertos. Es más fácil calcular la masa y la composición química de una estrella a la que nunca llegaremos que lo que le va a costar al ciudadano su vivienda la temporada que viene.

Este cambio de siglo ha coincidido con la crisis del modelo de desarrollo urbano que venía desde los 80 sustituyendo a la aglomeración industrial fordista. Fue aquella una sustitución que se hizo de manera poco uniforme porque, esta vez, no había una fórmula más o menos universal que reemplazara a la ciudad industrial, sino un organismo global cuyas componentes dependían del papel que cada ciudad consiguiera desempeñar en el nuevo orden planetario. La vieja literatura de manual que ayudó a la construcción de complejos industriales similares en el mundo desarrollado no servía para conducir esta transformación que en principio ensayó alternativas diversas, para terminar adoptando patrones espaciales muy parecidos. En realidad, la crisis de estos sustitutos es de momento una crisis teórica, en el sentido de que ciertas aproximaciones teóricas que han realizado algunas medidas de estos objetos muestran su inviabilidad a medio y largo plazo por su profunda insostenibilidad y su radical asimetría social. Sorprendentemente, los responsables locales y nacionales, y buena parte de su intelectualidad orgánica, no ven en ellos debilidades apreciables y prefieren, siguiendo el optimismo leibniziano del irreducible doctor Pangloss, «imaginarse en el mejor de los mundos posibles».

La morfología urbana y el deterioro de la ciudad han quedado fuera de los modelos interpretativos del auge inmobiliario y sus consecuencias. De éste se han destacado sus excesos, por los riesgos y problemas económicos que conllevan, dejando en segundo plano las transformaciones de la morfología y la destrucción urbana que implica. Sin embargo, estas prácticas inmobiliarias alejadas de los equilibrios mercantiles, están inequívocamente al servicio de un proceso de acumulación íntimamente asociado a estas transformaciones morfológicas. La Almendra Central madrileña, permite ilustrar esta deriva del espacio social, obligado a ofrecer una estructura suficientemente estable y ordenada —jerarquizada y excluyente— para dirigir y garantizar el proceso de acumulación que desarrolla el modelo. Se recurre a la economía política y a la historia urbana, para comprender y desvelar la secuencia de modalidades inmobiliarias y sus implicaciones morfológicas que remiten al imaginario colectivo en el que se elabora y materializa esta morfología., Urban morphology and city deterioration have stayed out of the interpretative models of the real-estate boom and its consequences. Surpluses have been outlined for the economic risks and problems they imply, subordinating morphological changes and processes of urban destruction. Nevertheless, these real-estate practices, far from the trading balances, are unequivocally serving a process of accumulation intimately associated with these morphologic transformations. The Almendra Central of Madrid illustrates this drift of the social space, obliged to offer a sufficiently stable and tidy structure —hierarchic and exclusive— to guide and guarantee the process of accumulation that the model develops. Drawing upon political economy and urban history, the sequence of real-estate modalities and its morphologic implications— that refer back to the collective imaginary in which this morphology is grounded— are understood and revealed.

In this work, we analyse the blistered function in wing vein development by studying genetic mosaics of mutant cells, genetic interactions with other genes affecting vein development and blistered expression in several mutant backgrounds. blistered encodes for a nuclear protein homologous to the mammalian Serum Response Factor and is expressed in presumptive intervein cells of third larval instar and pupal wing discs. Clones of blistered mutant cells proliferate normally but tend to grow along veins and always differentiate as vein tissue. These observations indicate that vein-determined wing cells show a particular behaviour that is responsible for their allocation to vein regions. We observe strong genetic interactions between blistered, veinlet and genes of the Ras signaling cascade. During disc proliferation, blistered expression is under the control of the Ras signal transduction pathway, but its expression is independent of veinlet. During the pupal period, blistered and veinlet expression become interdependent and mutually exclusive. These results link the activity of the Ras pathway to the process of early determination of intervein cells, by the transcriptional control of the blistered nuclear factor.
