Abstract

The Banger River, bordered by settlements, industrial sites, and agricultural land, has faced critical pollution challenges due to waste generated by surrounding activities. This contamination has led to a significant decline in both the quality and quantity of available clean water, a situation further exacerbated by rapid population growth. For years, the presence and severity of fecal pollution in natural water bodies have been monitored through the measurement of coliform bacteria, serving as a vital indicator. In this study, numerical simulation models were utilized to assess the distribution of total coliforms in the waters of Pekalongan. The findings indicated that the distribution of total coliforms was significantly affected by tidal currents, which predominantly flowed westward along the coastline. The coliforms were sourced from various runoff pathways throughout the Banger River, with concentrations increasing up to 65,693 CFU/mL as one moves further west. In the coastal area of Pekalongan, coliform concentrations range between 15,252 and 62,332 CFU/mL. These results underscore the urgent need for effective water management strategies to mitigate fecal contamination and protect public health in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Plastic‐containing waste generated from industrial and household activities is usually discharged into rivers. Pekalongan Regency has several rivers that flow into the Java Sea, one of which is the Sengkarang River. Microplastic is a serious pollutant that has prompted enhanced research and experimentation. This study aims to determine the concentration and distribution of microplastics in water and sediment at the mouth of the Sengkarang River, Pekalongan. A total of 10 water samples and five sediment samples were collected from the river body to the deep water area around the Sengkarang River. Modeling of microplastic distribution is made using hydrodynamic modeling and particle tracking models using two‐dimensional mathematical model. The results showed that the abundance of microplastics ranged from 131 to 360 particle/m3 in water samples and 552.5–972.5 particle/kg in sediment samples. The most common types of microplastics found were fibers and fragments. The greatest abundance and distribution of microplastics are found in coastal areas in water samples and mangrove areas in sediment samples. 7. Estimation of Suspended Particulate Matter Using Landsat 9 Imagery: Generating Algorithms and Spatio-Temporal Distributions.

Abstract

The fluctuation of suspended particulate matter (SPM) is essential to the biogeochemical cycle and ecological health of coastal waters. Anthropogenic activities potentially trigger an increase in SPM, so it needs to be monitored continuously. Spatial and temporal monitoring of SPM can be carried out cost-effectively with broad coverage using a remote sensing application. This study aims to build the SPM algorithm and estimate its temporal variability. The algorithm model in this study is based on an empirical formula between field data and reflectance data with the same acquisition. Water samples were taken from 100 stations in July 2022. Half were used for model building and the other for model validation. Suspended Particulate Matter was determined gravimetrically and estimated their temporal variability was based on Landsat 9 image records from December 2021 - November 2022. The results of the analysis show that the best algorithm for SPM estimation can be built based on coastal aerosol canals (B1), blue canals (B2), and green canals (B3) with the accuracy test result of (R² = 0.68; RMSE = 5.551 mg.L-1; MAPE= 7.07%; Bias= 0.28). The SPM temporal fluctuations were generally higher in the west monsoon and lowered in the east monsoon, ranging from 30 to 70 mg.L-1. On the other hand, the spatial distribution shows a higher magnitude in the estuary than in the offshore waters, with a deviation of about 30 mg.L-1. Abstract

[Analysis of Absorbed Dose Rate for NORM Material in Sediment of Banda Waters, Central Sulawesi] Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) are materials contained in the earth and generally come from several sources such as coal burning, oil and gas production, and mining. The coastal areas of the Banda water, especially along Luwuk, Morowali, and Kendari, Central Sulawesi, are areas that become locations for several activities, such as mining, oil and gas industry, and power plants. The purpose of this study is to assess the distribution of the absorbed dose rate of NORM material in the sediment of Banda water, especially along Luwuk, Morowali, and Kendari, Central Sulawesi, and to analyze its value against existing quality standards. The absorbed dose rate of 226Ra, 232Th, dan 40K were measured at 5 stations and the results are 52.53 nGy/h; 355.75 nGy/h; 45.88 nGy/h; 131.86 nGy/h; and 35.38 nGy/h. The study shows that the distribution of the absorbed dose rate was influenced by the activities of the NORM-producing industry close to the location of the measured station.
