Los selladores de fosas y fisuras han demostrado ser una alternativa eficiente y eficaz para proteger las superficies oclusales del desarrollo de lesiones cariosas. Se realiza una revisión del aire abrasivo usado en odontología resturadora y se presenta un caso clínico del uso de esta tecnologia para la colocación de selladores de fosas y fisuras.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the microhardness of caries-affected dentin and color stability of teeth restored after treatments with silver diamine fluoride (SDF) associated to potassium iodide (KI) and Biosilicate.Different samples from bovine teeth were obtained. For color readings, 80 cavities (6 mm × 6 mm × 2 mm) were prepared, and for microhardness, teeth were flattened into dentine to obtain 40 samples. All samples were submitted to cariogenic challenge and separated in 4 groups, according to the treatment used: 12% SDF + KI; 38% SDF; Biosilicate and control (no treatment). Cavities were restored with resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC, Vitremer, 3 M ESPE) or composite resin (CR, Z350, 3 M ESPE). After restoration, the samples were submitted to thermo-mechanical cycling (TMC) for 1,200,000 cycles. Color readings (EasyShade, Vita) were performed after restorations, after TMC, and 30 days after TMC. Knoop microhardness was evaluated on the planned samples before and after cariogenic challenge, after treatments, and after 30 days. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluated the dentine surface after treatments. Data were analyzed (ANOVA, Bonferroni, p .05).The results showed a higher color alteration for RMGIC than CR. The time of analysis was significant (p .05) for the 12% SDF + KI and control group. There was no difference (p .05) in microhardness between groups. However, there was evidence of dentin remineralization after treatments.It was concluded that the samples treated with Biosilicate resulted in a color alteration similar to control. The treatments presented dentin remineralizing potential for microhardness, below the demineralization level, caused by the cariogenic challenge.Considering the remineralizing potential presented by Biosilicate, this agent is a promising alternative that overcomes the SDF adverse effects such as tooth staining.

This study evaluated the effect of phytosphingosine (PHS) and bioactive glass-ceramic (Biosilicate) on dental enamel in terms of color alteration (ΔE), microhardness, and surface roughness when submitted to erosive challenge (EC). Sixty specimens of bovine teeth (6×6×2mm) were obtained. Initial color (Easyshade, VITA), KHN (HMV-2, Shimadzu), and Ra (SJ-201P, Mitutoyo) measurements were performed. Specimens were separated into groups according to treatments: PHS, 10% Biosilicate, PHS+10% Biosilicate, and artificial saliva (control) and submitted to EC with Coca-Cola for 2 min. This cycle was repeated 4 times daily/15 days. Between cycles, specimens remained in artificial saliva (2 h/37°C). After daily cycles, they were also stored in artificial saliva at 37ºC. Final color, microhardness, and surface roughness measurements were done. Color and KHN data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s test; and Ra, by 2-way ANOVA, repeated measures, and Tukey’s test (p.05) aos outros grupos, exceto Saliva+DE. Ceramic chipping occurs frequently in veneered all-ceramic crowns, and the decision to repair or replace them depends on many factors. The least invasive method is the intraoral repair. This case report describes a conservative restorative treatment performed on a chipped dental crown. A 59-year-old patient fractured her all-ceramic crown, revealing chipping and debonding of the feldspathic ceramic veneer and exposure of the zirconia framework. The fractured fragment was brought to the dental office. Due to the patient's esthetic concerns about prolonged treatment, it was decided to use the fragment to repair the crown intraorally. The result exceeded the patient's expectations. The intraoral repair of a chipped all-ceramic crown is a conservative and low-cost alternative that allows for immediate restoration of the function and esthetics. It is essential to establish protocols that can support clinician decision-making about the most appropriate clinical treatment, seeking the longevity of the restoration and the dental structure.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of natural bleaching products on the color, whiteness, and superficial properties of dental enamel. Seventy fragments of bovine teeth were obtained (6mm x 6mm x 2mm). Initial surface roughness (Surfcorder SE1700, Kosakalab), microhardness (HMV-2, Shimadzu), color (EasyShade, VITA), and surface gloss (Micro-Gloss 45º BYK, Gardner) readings were done. Samples were separated into five groups (n=14) according to the treatments used: CT-conventional toothpaste (negative control); CH-charcoal; TU-turmeric; BP-banana peel, and CP16%-16% carbamide peroxide gel (positive control, 4 h/day for 14 days), and then brushed for 560 cycles (T1) and 1200 cycles (T2), equivalent to 14 and 30 days of brushing. Materials and Methods: Ninety-six specimens of bovine teeth (6 mm × 6 mm × 2 mm) were cut, and initial color (Easyshade, VITA), microhardness (HMV-2, Shimadzu) and fluorescence (Matlabs software, Matworks) measurements were performed. Specimens were separated into four groups according to the treatments: Distilled water (control); Human saliva (HS); PHS; PHS + HS. Specimens (n = 6) were submitted to staining procedures: Distilled water (immersion for 30 days—control); Coffee (15 minutes, twice a day/for 15 days); Black tea (as described for Coffee) and cigarette smoke (20 cigarettes/sample). Final measurements were performed, and data were analyzed (Color—CIEDE2000, fluorescence—2-way ANOVA, Tukey, and microhardness—Kruskal-Wallis Dunn, P .05) for the groups control (water = 1.0 + − 0.5/ cigarette = 2.3 0.3) and PHS (water = 0.8 0.4/ cigarette = 2.3 0.4). PHS + HS demonstrated intermediate means than PHS and HS when stained with coffee and tea. After treatments, the least fluorescence alterations occurred for the groups treated with distilled water and cigarette, regardless of the treatment, with no difference (P >.05) between them. There was a significant difference (P PHS > HS > Distilled water. Conclusions: It was concluded that PHS treatment did not protect the staining of the enamel by coffee and tea, but increased the microhardness, both in the presence and absence of a salivary pellicle. Practical Implications: Phytoshingosine is a novel agent and considered a promising component for anti-biofilm and anti-erosion properties by the formation of a diffusion barrier on the dental enamel. In line, PHS might be considered for anti-staining purposes.

Editorial No decorrer da história do Programa de Pós Graduação em Odontologia (Reabilitação Oral), da Faculdade de Odontologia de Ribeirão Preto, da Universidade de São Paulo, o Curso de Verão vem divulgando as atividades e linhas de pesquisas desenvolvidas pelo Programa e Departamento com o objetivo de incentivar a docência e pesquisa odontológica Brasileira. Contudo, devido a condição sanitária imposta pela pandemia do SARS-CoV-2, com a necessidade de isolamento social e a característica dos participantes do curso serem de diferentes regiões do Brasil e da América Latina, o curso que vinha sendo preparado com formato presencial, foi replanejado de forma que as atividades propostas pudessem ser realizadas de forma remota, à distância. Graças às tecnologias digitais e empenho da Comissão Organizadora da XIII Edição do Curso de Verão do Programa de Pós Graduação em Reabilitação Oral, o curso pode ser oferecido aos seus 80 participantes, de todos os estados do país e de outros países da américa latina, com uma programação científica que contou com a participação de docentes, pós-graduandos egressos do Programa e pós-graduandos da Unidade. O engajamento da comissão organizadora juntamente com a qualidade de material apresentado pelos palestrantes proporcionou uma experiencia única, concretizando ainda mais a existência do curso dentro do programa e aumentando a abrangência das nossas feitorias para a população. Ainda, graças à possibilidade ofertada aos participantes para apresentação de seus trabalhos e ao alto nível dos trabalhos selecionados, garantindo a troca de experiências entre as diversas universidades, apresentamos a terceira edição dos Anais do Curso de Verão. Certos de que o objetivo do Curso foi alcançado, mesmo frente aos desafios impostos pela Pandemia, agradecermos a participação de todos no evento, com muita responsabilidade, dedicação e carinho. OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the influence of over-the-counter agents on the maintenance of color and microhardness of the enamel after home bleaching protocol. MATERIALS AND METHODS Specimens of bovine teeth (6 × 6 × 2 mm) were prepared, and color (Easyshade, VITA) and microhardness (HMV-2, Shimadzu) readings were performed. All the specimens were bleached using 22% carbamide peroxide (22%CP), except for the control group, and then separated into seven groups (n = 10) according to the interaction of toothpaste (whitening, conventional, and whitening with peroxide) and mouth rinse (whitening and conventional). Objective. This study evaluated, in vitro and in situ, the effect of phytosphingosine (PHS) associated with toothbrushing regarding color stability, surface roughness, and microhardness. Methods. Sixty-four specimens of bovine teeth (6x6x2 mm) were separated in 8 groups (n=8): S+TB: PHS (spray) + toothbrushing; TB+S: toothbrushing + PHS (spray); I+TB: PHS (immersion) + toothbrushing; TB+I: toothbrushing + PHS (immersion); TB: toothbrushing; S: PHS spray; I: immersion in PHS solution and Saliva: immersion in saliva. Toothbrushing simulation (Mavtec, Brazil) was performed (356 rpm, 3.8 centimeters course by the toothbrush - Soft Tek) for 1, 7, 15, and 30 days. PHS remained in contact with specimens for 15 minutes. The specimens were evaluated before and after toothbrushing for color alteration (Easy Shade, VITA), surface roughness (Model SJ-201P Mitutoyo), and Knoop microhardness (HMV-2, Shimadzu Corporation). For the in situ analyses, 8 participants were recruited and received an intraoral device with 6 fragments of bovine enamel (6x6x2 mm). The properties evaluated were the same as those of the in vitro study. Participants were randomized following best results of in vitro tested protocols, for 15 days: TB; TB+S; I+TB. Data obtained by in vitro (two-way ANOVA, Tukey, p Results. The in vitro study showed a greater color change was found after 30 days. The greatest differences in surface roughness occurred between the initial value and after 1 day. Regarding microhardness, the highest values occurred after 15 and 30 days, which were similar. The in situ study showed greater color changes for the TB and I + TB, and greater surface roughness changes for TB and a similar increase in microhardness for the PHS protocols, which were higher than TB. Conclusions. Phytosphingosine leads to an increase in performance regarding color stability, surface roughness, and microhardness when applied. In general, the application of PHS after brushing showed a positive impact on its performance.Clinical relevance. Phytosphingosine showed to be interesting to compound prevention formulations in the dentistry field.

This study evaluated the effect of incorporating different concentrations of biosilicate in an experimental self-etch adhesive (SE).Biosilicate microparticles (0, 2, 5, and 10 wt%) were incorporated into the primer, and degree of conversion (DC) and wettability were tested (one-way ANOVA, Tukey's test, p0.05). The two best concentrations were selected (2% and 5%) for µTBS evaluation. Sound human molars (n=20) were sectioned into quarters and randomly assigned to 4 experimental groups: 1. experimental SE + 0% biosilicate (Exp0%; negative control); 2. experimental SE + 2% biosilicate (Exp2%); 3. experimental SE + 5% biosilicate (Exp5%); 4. AdheSE (Ivoclar Vivadent, positive control). After adhesive application, Filtek Z350 (3M Oral Care) composite was built up incrementally to 5 mm. Each quarter tooth was sectioned into sticks (0.9 mm2) and stored in distilled water (37°C) for 24 h, 6 months, or 1 year. After storage, sticks were submitted to µTBS (0.75 mm/min). The Ca:P ratio was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA with Bonferroni's correction, with statistical siginificance set at p0.05. Fracture patterns were observed under a digital microscope and adhesive interfaces with transmission electron microscopy (TEM).Exp2% presented the highest DC (p0.05), Exp5% exhibited the lowest µTBS (p0.05), and adhesive failures were predominant in all groups. TEM suggested remineralized areas in Exp2% and to a lesser degree in Exp5%. Exp2% and Exp5% showed a higher Ca:P ratio after aging (p0.05).The incorporation of biosilicate microparticles can improve the properties of self-etch adhesives. It increased the DC of the experimental adhesive as well as mineral deposition. However, the adhesive properties are concentration dependent, as a higher concentration of microparticles can adversely affect the mechanical properties of an adhesive.

Evaluate the influence of enamel pre-treatment using Biosilicate, associated or not to other treatments; on the bond strength (BS) of pit-and-fissure sealant, with or without saliva contamination.Ninety slices (4 mm × 4 mm) were obtained from 30 bovine incisors. Each slice was embedded in acrylic resin with their buccal surface exposed and polished to obtain a flat enamel surface. Half of them were contaminated with human saliva. All specimens were randomly divided into five groups (n = 9) according to the surface pre-treatment tested: acid etching (AE); AE + Biosilicate (B); AE + B + total-etch adhesive (Ad); Biosilicate; control (no treatment). Then, a 1 mm layer of sealant (Clinpro XT Varnish, 3M ESPE) was applied; and to provide support, a composite resin (Opallis, FGM) block was built up over it. Samples were thermocycled (500 cycles/5-55 °C) and sectioned obtaining sticks (1 × 1 × 10 mm) for microtensile BS testing (0.5 mm/min). Data were analysed with two-way ANOVA, Bonferroni test, p 0.05. Failure patterns were evaluated using a stereomicroscope.There was no difference among contaminated and non-contaminated groups, and between non-contaminated groups (p 0.05). When contaminated, AE + B + Ad Group showed the highest BS values, differing (p 0.05) from B Group and Control; similar between them (p 0.05). Cohesive fractures were found in AE + B + Ad Group, submitted or not to contamination.Since a surface pre-treatment was used, whether Biosilicate was applied or not, the sealant/enamel BS was the same in saliva-contaminated or non-contaminated enamel.

Sendo assim a comissão organizadora da XII Edição do Curso de Verão do Programa de Pós Graduação em Reabilitação Oral ofereceu aos seus participantes de diversos estados do país e de outros países uma gama de oportunidades dentro da Faculdade de Odontologia de Ribeirão Preto, com a sua grade cientifica voltada para pesquisas laboratoriais e clínicas, das quais diversos docentes da unidade expuseram as suas linhas de pesquisa.Essa edição do curso atingiu proporções inimagináveis, com altos números de inscrições, nunca obtido nas versões anteriores. Além disso o engajamento da comissão organizadora juntamente com a qualidade de material apresentado pelos palestrantes proporcionaram uma experiencia que tem sido avaliada pelos participantes como única e imensurável, concretizando ainda mais a existência do curso dentro do programa e aumentando a abrangência das nossas feitorias para a população.Assim, damos início a série de Anais do Curso de Verão, da qual essa é a segunda edição que possibilitou aos seus participantes apresentarem seus trabalhos, garantindo a troca de experiencias entre as diversas universidades. Objectives This study evaluated the influence of thermo-mechanical cycling (TMC) on the bond strength (BS) of a universal adhesive system (UAS - Adper Single Bond Universal, 3M ESPE) to dentin treated or not with 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX). Methods Eighty human molars were flattened until reach the dentin and separated into 4 groups according to the bonding protocol: ENR Group: 37% phosphoric acid + 3-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system (ENR); UAS Group: UAS in self-etch mode; ENR + CHX Group: 37% phosphoric acid + CHX + ENR; UAS + CHX Group: CHX + UAS in self-etch mode. After treatments, teeth were restored (Filtek Z350, 3M ESPE). Samples (n = 10) were submitted to aging process: stored in distilled water at 37°C/30 days or TMC (ERIOS - 98N/1.6Hz + thermal cycling 5/37/55 °C - 1,200,000 cycles). Specimens were sectioned into sticks (1.0 mm2) and submitted to the microtensile test (Mechanical Test Machine - 0.5 mm/min). Fracture patterns and hybrid layer integrity were analyzed under Stereomicroscope and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results The BS results (3-way ANOVA, Bonferroni's test, α = 5%) showed that groups treated with CHX presented higher BS values than control groups; significant in all cases (p < .05), except for ENR submitted to TMC (p > .05). When CHX was applied and samples were cycled, UAS revealed higher BS (p < .05) than ENR. After TMC, cohesive fractures increased for UAS, regardless of CHX application. SEM analysis demonstrated different hybridization patterns for the adhesive systems tested. Conclusion The performance of the universal adhesive system used in self-etch mode was better than that of the 3-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system. Clinical significance Universal adhesive systems have been developed in order to simplify the dentin hybridization protocol. Este estudo in vitro avaliou o efeito do uso de própolis associada a suspensão de Biosilicato na resistência de união (RU) à dentina de restaurações em compósito. Foram selecionados 320 dentes molares humanos hígidos e preparadas cavidades oclusais (5 mm de comprimento, 4 mm de largura e 4 mm de profundidade) utilizando brocas carbide. Metade das amostras foram submetidas a protocolos Des-Re para formação de cárie artificial. Posteriormente, todos os dentes foram separados em oito grupos (n = 20) de acordo com o tratamento recebido antes do adesivo (Single Bond Universal - 3M ESPE): Grupo Controle - Sistema Adesivo; Grupo CHX - Cloredixina a 0,12% (CHX); Grupo Bio - Suspensão de Biosilicato a 10% (Bio); Grupo P16 - Extrato de própolis com baixo teor de polifenóis (P16); Grupo P45 - Extrato de própolis com alto teor de polifenóis (P45); Grupo CHX Bio - CHX + Bio; Grupo P16 Bio - P16 + Bio; P45 Bio - P45 + Bio. Após restauração (Filtek Z350, 3M ESPE), as amostras foram seccionadas em formato de palitos, divididos e armazenados em água destilada a 37 ºC por 24 horas, 6 meses e 1 ano. Após o período de armazenamento, foram submetidos ao teste de microtração (0,5 mm/min). Os dados foram analisados (ANOVA de dois fatores, teste de Bonferroni, p < .05), os padrões de fratura observados com microscópio óptico (VH-M100, Keyence) e MEV (EVO MA10, ZEISS); e a interface adesiva, através da MET (JEM-1010, JEOL). A associação de tratamentos resultou em maior RU (p < .05) nos dentes cariados em relação às amostras Controle, testados após 24 horas, sem diferença entre si (p > .05). Entre os hígidos testados após 6 meses, o grupo P16 mostrou maior RU que os grupos Bio e Controle (p < .05). Dentre os dentes cariados, o grupo P45 mostrou maior RU do que o grupo CHX Bio (p < .05) quando testados após 1 ano. O envelhecimento das amostras só foi significativo (p < .05) para os substratos cariados, de forma que houve menor RU após 6 meses para o grupo P45 Bio e após 1 ano para o grupo CHX Bio. As imagens em MEV demonstraram que substratos hígidos apresentam padrão clássico de condicionamento obtido com sistemas self-etch. Nos cariados, nota-se maior remoção da smear layer e formação dos tags de resina em maior quantidade. Encontraram-se túbulos mais expostos e fibrilas colágenas desorganizadas. Foi possível identificar partículas de Biosilicato nos grupos tratados com esse biomaterial. Nos substratos cariados, foi possível identificar partículas de própolis sobre a dentina tratada. Na MET foi observada boa interação do adesivo com as fibrilas colágenas e a formação da camada híbrida. No substrato cariado percebe-se um tecido conjuntivo mais frouxo e desorganizado. Foi também possível identificar partículas de Biosilicato e do extrato de própolis. O tratamento com própolis com baixo teor de polifenóis, resultou em melhor resistência de união em substrato hígido após 6 meses de envelhecimento. A associação de tratamentos com Biosilicato promove melhor resistência de união após 24 horas em substratos cariados. Não houve diferença na resistência de união em virtude do envelhecimento no substrato hígido. O padrão de fratura mais prevalente foi o não adesivo, que aumentou à medida que houve maior tempo de envelhecimento. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of the use of propolis associated with Biosilicate suspension on the bond strength (BS) of composite restorations to dentin. 320 sound human molars were selected and occlusal cavities (5 mm length, 4 mm width and 4 mm depth) were prepared with carbide burs. Half of them were submitted to Des-Re protocols for development of artificial caries. Then, all teeth were separated into eight groups (n = 20) according to the treatment received before the adhesive system (Single Bond Universal - 3M ESPE): Control Group - Adhesive System; CHX Group - 0,12% Chlorhexidine (CHX); Bio Group - 10% Biosilicate suspension (Bio); P16 Group - Propolis extract with low levels of polyphenols (P16); P45 Group - Propolis extract with high levels of polyphenols (P45); CHX Bio Group - CHX + Bio; P16 Bio Group - P16 + Bio; P45 Bio Group - P45 + Bio. After restorations (Filtek Z350, 3M ESPE), samples were sectioned into sticks, separated and stored in distilled water at 37 ºC for 24 hours, 6 months and 1 year. After that, the sticks were submitted to microtensile test (0,5 mm/min). Data was analyzed (2-way ANOVA, Bonferroni\'s Test, p < .05), fracture patterns were observed with optical microscope (VH-M100, Keyence) and SEM (EVO MA10, ZEISS); and the adhesive interface, under TEM (JEM-1010, JEOL). In caries-affected dentin (CAD), the association of treatments resulted in higher BS (p < .05) compared to Control group, tested after 24 hours, with no difference among them (p > .05). Among the sound dentin (SD) tested after 6 months, P16 group showed higher BS than Bio and Control groups (p < .05). On CAD tested after 1 year, P45 group presented higher BS than CHX Bio Group (p < .05). Aging was significant (p < .05) for CAD; thus, there was lower BS after 6 months for P45 Bio group and after 1 year for CHX Bio group. SEM displayed that SD present the classical etching pattern obtained with self-etch systems. Among CAD, there was greater removal of smear layer and higher amount of resin tags. It was also found dentinal tubules more exposed and disorganized collagen fibrils. It was identified Biosilicate particles in groups treated with this biomaterial. On CAD, it was possible to identify propolis particles on the treated dentin. TEM showed good interaction between adhesive and collagen fibrils, and the formation of the hybrid layer. In CAD, a looser and more disorganized connective tissue was noticed. It was also identified Biosilicate and propolis particles. The treatment with propolis with low levels of polyphenols resulted in the best bond strength on sound dentin after 6 months of aging. The association of treatments with Biosilicate promoted the best bond strength after 24 hours on caries-affected dentin. On sound substrates, there was no difference in bond strength due to aging. The most prevalent fracture pattern was the non-adhesive fracture, which increased with longer aging periods.

This study evaluated the effect of propolis associated with Biosilicate on the bond strength (BS) and gelatinolytic activity at the adhesive/dentin interface.Occlusal cavities were prepared in 320 human molars. Half of them were submitted to cariogenic challenge. All the teeth were separated into eight groups (n = 20): Control - Adhesive System (Single Bond Universal, 3 MESPE); CHX - 0.12 % Chlorhexidine; Bio - 10 % Biosilicate; P16 - Propolis with low levels of polyphenols; P45 - Propolis with high levels of polyphenols; CHX Bio - CHX + Bio; P16 Bio - P16+Bio; P45 Bio - P45+Bio. The adhesive was applied (self-etch mode) after treatments. Restorations (Filtek Z350, 3 MESPE) were performed and samples sectioned into sticks, separated and stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h, 6 months and 1 year. Microtensile BS (0.5 mm/min) was tested and analyzed (2-way ANOVA, Bonferroni's Test, p.05 and Weibull analysis). Fracture patterns (VH-M100, Keyence) and adhesive interfaces (SEM, EVO-MA10, ZEISS and TEM, JEM-1010, JEOL) were observed; and biodegradation and in situ zymography performed.P16 presented the highest BS values on sound dentin after 6 months. In caries-affected dentin (CAD), the association of treatments promoted the highest BS after 24 h. Sound dentin obtained significantly higher Weibull modulus than CAD. SEM displayed resin tags in P16, P45 and association of treatments. TEM showed good interaction between adhesive and dentin. According to the in situ zymography and biodegradation assay all natural primers reduced the gelatinolytic activity. P45 presented the lowest biodegradation and enzymatic activity.Propolis and the association of treatments promoted the highest bond strength results and preserved the dentin. All the experimental groups exhibited low gelatinolytic activity.Propolis and the association of treatments with Biosilicate could preserve the dentin substrate and improve the longevity of composite restorations.
