15. A Live Interior: Environments, Assemblies, Materialities

Abstract

This paper examines the interior as a condition that is continuously in production through the arrangement of objects and furniture. This is done along two lines of inquiry. First by examining a few different historical and contemporary conceptions of the domestic interior through the lens of architectural representation. Second by using the technique of laser scanning to document a number of inhabited interiors in two apartment buildings. Through a series of representations, or cloud drawings, produced from the scans, the paper presents three ways of reading the interior: as environments, as assemblies, and as materialities. Departing from Robin Evans’ writing on drawing techniques for representing the interior and their correlation to ways of inhabitation, the paper poses questions around how the understanding of the interior may shift when using emerging techniques for architectural representation. Through readings of Walter Benjamin as well as Sylvia Lavin, the paper discusses such shifts in relation to changes in the conception of the interior and the objects that it contains.

Abstract

Methane (CH4) emissions from manure management on livestock farms are a key source of greenhouse gas emissions in some regions and for some production systems, and the opportunities for mitigation may be significant if emissions can be adequately documented. We investigated a method for estimating CH4 emissions from liquid manure (slurry) that is based on anaerobic incubation of slurry collected from commercial farms. Methane production rates were used to derive a parameter of the Arrhenius temperature response function, lnA', representing the CH4 production potential of the slurry at the time of sampling. Results were used for parameterization of an empirical model to estimate annual emissions with daily time steps, where CH4 emissions from individual sources (barns, outside storage tanks) can be calculated separately. A monitoring program was conducted in four countries, i.e., Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands, during a 12-month period where slurry was sampled to represent barn and outside storage on finishing pig and dairy farms. Across the four countries, lnA' was higher in pig slurry compared to cattle slurry (p < 0.01), and higher in slurry from barns compared to outside storage (p < 0.01). In a separate evaluation of the incubation method, in-vitro CH4 production rates were comparable with in-situ emissions. The results indicate that lnA' in barns increases with slurry age, probably due to growth or adaptation of the methanogenic microbial community. Using lnA' values determined experimentally, empirical models with daily time steps were constructed for finishing pig and dairy farms and used for scenario analyses. Annual emissions from pig slurry were predicted to be 2.5 times higher than those from cattle slurry. Changing the frequency of slurry export from the barn on the model pig farm from 40 to 7 d intervals reduced total annual CH4 emissions by 46 %; this effect would be much less on cattle farms with natural ventilation. Abstract

Rare diseases are, despite their name, collectively common and millions of people are affected daily of conditions where treatment often is unavailable. Sulfatases are a large family of activating enzymes related to several of these diseases. Heritable genetic variations in sulfatases may lead to impaired activity and a reduced macromolecular breakdown within the lysosome, with several severe and lethal conditions as a consequence. While therapeutic options are scarce, treatment for some sulfatase deficiencies by recombinant enzyme replacement are available. The recombinant production of such sulfatases suffers greatly from both low product activity and yield, further limiting accessibility for patient groups. To mitigate the low product activity, we have investigated cellular properties through computational evaluation of cultures with varying media conditions and comparison of two CHO clones with different levels of one active sulfatase variant. Transcriptome analysis identified 18 genes in secretory pathways correlating with increased sulfatase production. Experimental validation by upregulation of a set of three key genes improved the specific enzymatic activity at varying degree up to 150-fold in another sulfatase variant, broadcasting general production benefits. We also identified a correlation between product mRNA levels and sulfatase activity that generated an increase in sulfatase activity when expressed with a weaker promoter. 23. Dog-owner interactions during a staged veterinary consultation

Abstract

This study investigated the role of dog owners’ adult attachment style and personality on dog-owner interactions during a staged veterinary visit. A total number of 20 healthy, non-aggressive dogs and their owners participated in a standardised, non-invasive, veterinary consultation. Owners’ scores in two questionnaires, Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ, reflecting adult attachment style) and Big Five Inventory (BFI, reflecting personality), were investigated with regards to correlations with their own and their dogs’ behaviour using video recordings. The consultation was divided into four parts, mirroring events in a real veterinary consultation: pre-examination phase (owners were not allowed to interact with their dog), examination phase and post-examination phase which consisted of two parts: one where the owner was available to interact with their dog, and one where they were allowed to interact but given a task that redirected their attention away from the dog. Owners who scored higher in subscales related to more avoidant adult attachment had dogs who spent less time in their proximity during the pre-examination phase. Moreover, these dogs were more frequently in contact with the door after the examination. These results may be interpreted as these dogs being more independent and less reliant on their owners. This is in line with previous findings in children and dogs of caregivers with a more avoidant attachment style. Owners who scored higher in conscientiousness (BFI) interacted less with their dogs during the examination, which supports previous research indicating that this personality trait affect owners’ caregiving behaviour. This study suggests that owners’ adult attachment style and personality may influence the beha-viour of the owner and the dog during a staged veterinary visit. This study is limited by a small sample size and the fact that all dogs were healthy. Further research, including e.g. physiological measures, is required to investigate

24. Vaginalundersökningar under förlossning - Barnmorskors attityder och erfarenheter

Abstrakt Bakgrund: Ett övergripande mål inom förlossningsvården är att mor och barn ska må bra och att kvinnan ska få en positiv förlossningsupplevelse och en förlossning med så få interventioner som möjligt. Enligt kompetensbeskrivning för legitimerad barnmorska ska barnmorskan ha kompetens att bedöma förlossningens progress och identifiera avvikelser samt bedöma behov av vårdåtgärder. Det vanligaste sättet att bedöma förlossningens progress är genom vaginalundersökning. Barnmorskans perspektiv på vaginalundersökning är mindre studerat men det är av intresse att lyfta barnmorskors erfarenheter och attityder kring detta för att sätta ord på en komplex undersökning som dessutom kan ha påverkan på kvinnans förlossningsupplevelse. Syfte: Att undersöka barnmorskors attityder till och erfarenheter av vaginalundersökning under förlossning. Metod: En kvalitativ ansats användes i studien. Enskilda intervjuer med 12 barnmorskor från tre förlossningskliniker i södra Sverige genomfördes. Materialet analyserades med kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultat: Analysen resulterade i tre huvudkategorier: Ett redskap för att följa progress, Kvinnans perspektiv i centrum samt “Barnmorskeri” i en arbetsplatskontext. Barnmorskorna beskrev vaginalundersökningen som en del av sin kompetens, och att det är viktigt att alltid ha med kvinnans perspektiv. Arbetsplatskontexten innehöll olika faktorer som påverkade barnmorskan i sin handläggning gällande vaginalundersökningar. Konklusion: Vaginalundersökning är en undersökning som barnmorskan ofta gör, men hur och varför man gör det diskuteras inte alltid med kollegor. Genom att sätta ord på barnmorskors erfarenheter och attityder kan deras kompetens lyftas och en ökad medvetenhet skapas och öppna upp för diskussion om vaginalundersökning under förlossning.

Abstract

Climate change is not only about changes in means of climatic variables such as temperature, precipitation and wind, but also their extreme values which are of critical importance to human society and ecosystems. To inspire the Swedish climate research community and to promote assessments of international research on past and future changes in extreme weather events against the global climate change background, the Earth Science Class of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences organized a workshop entitled ‘Extreme weather events in a warming world’ in 2019. This article summarizes and synthesizes the key points from the presentations and discussions of the workshop on changes in floods, droughts, heat waves, as well as on tropical cyclones and extratropical storms. In addition to reviewing past achievements in these research fields and identifying research gaps with a focus on Sweden, future challenges and opportunities for the Swedish climate research community are highlighted.
