Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3, BFO) is one of the few single-phase crystalline compounds exhibiting strong multiferroic properties at room temperature, which makes it promising for use in various fields of science and technology. The remarkable characteristics of BFO at the nanoscale position it as a compelling candidate for enhancing the functionalities of polymeric nanocomposite materials. In this study, we explore the fabrication of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites with a variable content of BFO nanopowders (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt%) by solution casting in the form of thin films with the thickness of ~60 µm. Our findings reveal that the presence of BFO nanoparticles slightly facilitates the formation of β- and γ-phases of PVDF, known for their enhanced piezoelectric properties, thereby potentially expanding the utility of PVDF-based materials in sensors, actuators, and energy harvesting devices. On the other hand, the increase in filler concentration leads to enlarged spherulite diameter and porosity of PVDF, as well as an increase in filler content above 20 wt% resulting in a decrease in the degree of crystallinity. The structural changes in the surface were found to increase the hydrophobicity of the nanocomposite surface. Magnetometry indicates that the magnetic properties of nanocomposite are influenced by the BFO nanoparticle content with the saturation magnetization at ~295 K ranging from ~0.08 emu/g to ~0.8 emu/g for samples with the lowest and higher BFO content, respectively. The study encompasses an investigation of optical, photothermal and biocompatibility properties of a composite consisting of golden cores surrounded by superparamagnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. Accompanied with the experiment, the computational modeling reveals that each adjusted magnetic nanoparticle redshifts the plasmon resonance frequency in gold and nonlinearly increases the extinction cross‐section at ~800 nm. The concentration dependent photothermal study demonstrates a temperature increase of 8.2 K and the photothermal conversion efficiency of 51% for the 100 μg/mL aqueous solution of the composite nanoparticles, when subjected to a laser power of 0.5 W at 815 nm. During an in vitro photothermal therapy, a portion of the composite nanoparticles, initially seeded at this concentration, remained associated with the cells after washing. These retained nanoparticles effectively heated the cell culture medium, resulting in a 22% reduction in cell viability after 15 min of the treatment. In the context of the extensive application prospect of two-dimensional (2D) chalcogenides, we synthesized layered SnSe2+δ bulks with defects employing a hybrid chemical vapor transport-melt approach. Both the Eg and A1g Raman characteristic peaks in SnSe2+δ are dominated by cubic anharmonicity, coupled with nonlinear temperature dependencies below 140 K. Notably, the reduction in phonon energy observed in these vibrational modes can be ascribed to defect-mediated Raman scattering, irrespective of deficient or excess Se defects. However, the lower consistency in the Raman shifts of the in-plane Eg vibrations compared to the out-of-plane A1g modes suggests that the defects predominantly entail the absence of Se atoms and the substitutions of Sn by Se, delineating a continuum of Se-deficient and Se-enriched compositions. Furthermore, Se defects induce the contraction of the indirect bandgaps, facilitating a transition from medium to narrow bandgap semiconductors in SnSe2+δ, which underscores the tunable nature of the bandgaps through the incorporation of Se defects. These discoveries present an avenue for bandgap engineering and foster a deeper comprehension of the phonon and thermal properties of layered chalcogenides for further advanced technologies. This work reports an approach of highly active sonophotocatalysts through the combined Zn-doping and heterojunction of CoFe2O4/α-Fe2O3 heterostructures. The novelty lies in the combined Zn-doping and α-Fe2O3 coupling strategy to tune the electronic structure and enhance charge separation of spinel-based magnetic nanocatalyst. A sol–gel auto-combustion method was used to synthesize Zn0.3Co0.7Fe2O4 nanoparticles with ~12% α-Fe2O3 content. The Zn-doping increased the magnetization saturation from ~65 to 86 emu/g and narrowed the optical bandgap from ~1.48 to 1.62 eV compared to undoped CoFe2O4, indicating a modified electronic structure. Under sonophotocatalysis, near complete methylene blue decomposition was achieved in 45 min for both catalysts, with a 30% synergistic effect observed. The Zn-doping also activated the semiconductor photocatalysis mechanism. The combined Zn-doping and heterojunction approach enables highly active sonophotocatalysts to effectively degrade dye pollutants and mitigate water pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ti3C2Tx MXene is one of the most comprehensively studied 2D materials in terms of its adsorptive, transport, and catalytic properties, cytotoxic performance, etc. Still, conventional MXene synthesis approaches provide low single-flake MXene yield and frequently uncontrollable properties, demanding further post-processing. The MXene family also lacks magnetism, which is helpful for producing effective nanoadsorbents as their magnetic decantation is the cheapest and most convenient way to remove the spent adsorbent from water. Composite materials consisting of magnetic nanoparticles grown on top of MXene flakes are commonly used to provide magnetic properties to the resulting nanocomposite. In this paper, we study the possibility to delaminate multilayer Ti3C2Tx MXene sheets directly by growing iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles inside their interlayer spacing. We find out that, with a mass fraction of particles comparable or exceeding that of MXenes, their growth is accompanied by an effective enhancement of single-layer MXene yield and suitable magnetic properties of the resulting composite. The developed approach can be further used for simplifying synthesis protocols to obtain magnetic MXene-based nanoadsorbents with tunable properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mapping of magnetic fields is an important task for characterizing permanent magnets, their systems, and the various devices that use magnets. However, commercial devices for this task are quite expensive and difficult to acquire. In this study, a design process for an automatized magnetic mapping setup utilizing a 3D printer was proposed via a do-it-yourself approach using common parts found in a laboratory. We used a 3D printer for two purposes: to create instrument parts to fix the Hall probe instead of the printer extruder, and to use the same 3D printer as the position controller of the magnetic probe. We describe the device assembly process, including hardware and software aspects. Several tests of the assembled setup were performed on samples with different magnetic texture dimensions from several centimeters (graduated permanent magnet) to tens of micrometers (flexible magnet with a planar Halbach structure and a 5¼ inch floppy disk). The spatial resolution was in the sub-millimeter range. The parameters of the mapping, such as the number of points and data acquisition time, were optimized for such samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The creation of multi-stimuli-sensitive composite polymer–inorganic materials is a practical scientific task. The combination of photoactive magneto-piezoelectric nanomaterials and ferroelectric polymers offers new properties that can help solve environmental and energy problems. Using the doctor blade casting method with the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) technique, we synthesized a hybrid polymer–inorganic nanocomposite porous membrane based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3/BFO). We studied the samples using transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM/SEM), infrared Fourier spectroscopy (FTIR), total transmission and diffuse reflection, fluorescence microscopy, photoluminescence (PL), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and piezopotential measurements. Our results demonstrate that the addition of BFO increases the proportion of the polar phase from 76.2% to 93.8% due to surface ion–dipole interaction. We also found that the sample exhibits laser-induced fluorescence, with maxima at 475 and 665 nm depending on the presence of nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, our piezo-photocatalytic experiments showed that under the combined actions of ultrasonic treatment and UV–visible light irradiation, the reaction rate increased by factors of 68, 13, 4.2, and 1.6 compared to sonolysis, photolysis, piezocatalysis, and photocatalysis, respectively. This behavior is explained by the piezoelectric potential and the narrowing of the band gap of the composite due to the mechanical stress caused by ultrasound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New composite materials consisting of polymer matrix with PZT and NdFeB microparticles were prepared and investigated in the work. It was found that magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization, coercivity, permeability, depend on mass concentration of the ferromagnetic particles in the samples. Also it was found that all samples had electrical polarization in DC external electric field. The electric properties such as coercivity, remanent polarization, the maximum polarization value, had changes in the external constant magnetic field 1.1 kOe. These changes depended on both concentrations of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric particles. This type of magnetoelectric transformation allows us to classify new materials as multiferroic materials. These new composite materials can easily be prepared of any shape, the final materials are flexible and resistant to external chemical influences. The area of application of new multiferroic materials varies from sensors to autonomous energy sources.

Polymer-based multiferroics, combining magnetic and piezoelectric properties, are studied experimentally—from synthesis to multi-parameter characterization—in view of their prospects for fabricating biocompatible scaffolds. The main advantage of these systems is facile generation of mechanical deformations and electric signals in response to external magnetic fields. Herein, we address the composites based on PVDF-TrFE polymer matrices filled with a combination of piezoelectric (BaTiO3, BTO) and/or ferrimagnetic (Zn0.25Co0.75Fe2O4, ZCFO) particles. It is shown that the presence of BTO micron-size particles favors stripe-type structuring of the ZCFO filler and enhances the magnetoelectric response of the sample up to 18.6 mV/(cm∙Oe). Besides that, the admixing of BTO particles is crucial because the mechanical properties of the composite filled with only ZCFO is much less efficient in transforming magnetic excitations into the mechanical and electric responses. Attention is focused on the local surfacial mechanical properties since those, to a great extent, determine the fate of stem cells cultivated on these surfaces. The nano-indentation tests are accomplished with the aid of scanning probe microscopy technique. With their proven suitable mechanical properties, a high level of magnetoelectric conversion and also biocompatibility, the composites of the considered type are enticing as the materials for multiferroic-based polymer scaffolds.
