Single-ion mass identification is important for atomic and nuclear physics experiments on ions produced with low yields. Cooling the ion to ultra-low temperatures by interacting with a laser-cooled ion will enhance the precision of the measurements. In this paper we present axial-common-mode frequency measurements of balanced and unbalanced Coulomb crystals from the Fourier transform of the fluorescence photons from a Doppler-cooling transition in calcium ions, after probing the ion/crystal with a 5-radiofrequency comb. A single ion non-destructively detected can be used for identification yielding a mass resolving power $m/\Delta m_\mathrm{FWHM}\approx 310$ from the axial common mode. Accurate measurements with implications in many branches in Physics have been accessed using Penning traps and conventional techniques within a temperature regime where each eigenmotion of a charged particle is still a classical harmonic oscillator. Cooling the particle directly or indirectly with lasers allows reaching the quantum regime of each oscillator, controlling subtle effects in the precision frontier by detecting photons instead of electric current. In this paper, we present a new in-vacuum optical system designed to detecting 397-nm fluorescence photons from individual calcium ions and Coulomb crystals in a 7-T Penning trap. Based on the outcome of computer simulations, our design shows diffraction-limited performance. The system has been characterized using a single laser-cooled ion as a point-like source, reaching a final resolution of 3.69(3) $\mu$m and 2.75(3) $\mu$m for the trap's axial and radial directions, respectively, after correcting aberrations.

The $GW$ approximation has become an important tool for predicting charged excitations of isolated molecules and condensed systems. Its popularity can be attributed to many factors, including a favorable scaling and relatively good accuracy. In practical applications, the $GW$ is often performed as a one-shot perturbation known as $G_0W_0$. Unfortunately, $G_0W_0$ suffers from a strong starting point dependence and is often not as accurate as one would need. Self-consistent $GW$ methodologies alleviate these problems but come with a marked increase in computational cost. In this manuscript, we propose the use of an estimate of the exchange-correlation derivative discontinuity to provide a remarkably good starting point for $G_0W_0$ calculations, yielding ionization potentials and electron affinities with eigenvalue self-consistent $GW$ quality at no additional cost. This work proposes a methodology to improve the extraction of coherent structures associated with the generation of acoustic fluctuations in turbulent jets from high-speed Schlieren images. This methodology employs the momentum potential theory of Doak to compute potential (acoustic and thermal) energy fluctuations from the Schlieren images by solving a Poisson equation, in the manner introduced by Prasad and Gaitonde. The calculation of momentum potential fluctuations is then combined with the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) technique: the cross-spectral density is defined based on the momentum potential field, instead of the Schlieren images. While the latter are dominated by a broad range of vortical fluctuations in the turbulent mixing region of unheated high-speed jets, the momentum potential field is governed by acoustic fluctuations and its spatial structure in the frequency domain is remarkably coherent. This approach is applied here to Schlieren visualizations of a twin-jet configuration with a small jet separation and two supersonic operation conditions: a perfectly-expanded and a overexpanded one. The SPOD modes based on momentum potential fluctuations retain the wavepacket structure including the direct Mach-wave radiation together with upstream- and downstream-traveling acoustic waves, similar to SPOD modes based on the Schlieren images. However, they result in a remarkably lower-rank decomposition than Schlieren-based SPOD and, as opposed to the latter, provide an effective separation of twin-jet fluctuations into independent toroidal and flapping oscillations that are recovered as different SPOD modes.

Naming tests represent an essential tool in gauging the severity of aphasia and monitoring the trajectory of recovery for individuals afflicted with this debilitating condition. In these assessments, patients are presented with images corresponding to common nouns, and their responses are evaluated for accuracy. The separated flow over a wall-mounted bump geometry under harmonic oscillations of the inflow stream is investigated by direct numerical simulations. The bump geometry gives rise to streamwise pressure gradients similar to those encountered on the suction side of low-pressure turbine (LPT) blades. Under steady inflow conditions, the separated-flow laminar-to-turbulent transition is initiated by self-sustained vortex shedding due to Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability. In LPTs, the dynamics are further complicated by the passage of the wakes shed by the previous stage of blades. The wake-passing effect is modeled here by introducing a harmonic variation of the inflow conditions. Three inflow oscillation frequencies and three amplitudes are considered. The frequencies are comparable to the wake-passing frequencies in practical LPTs. The amplitudes range from 1% to 10% of the inflow total pressure. The dynamics of the separated flow are studied by isolating the flow components that are respectively coherent with and uncorrelated to the inflow oscillation. Three scenarios are identified. The first one is analogous to the steady inflow case. In the second one, the KH vortex shedding is replaced during a part of the inflow period by the formation and release of a large vortex cluster. The third scenario consists solely of the periodic formation and release of the vortex cluster; it leads to a consistent reduction of the separated flow length over all the period compared to the steady inflow case and would be the most desirable flow condition in a practical application., Comment: 32 pages, 27 figures

We use an electric-dipole laser-driven transition to precisely measure the cyclotron-frequency ratios of the pairs $^{42}$Ca$^+$-$^{40}$Ca$^+$, $^{44}$Ca$^+$-$^{40}$Ca$^+$ and $^{48}$Ca$^+$-$^{40}$Ca$^+$ in a 7-tesla Penning trap. A single laser-cooled ($T\approx 1$~mK) ion serves, together with photon-counting and/or photon-imaging units, as a radiofrequency detector covering a broad-band frequency spectrum, in the present case from kHz to a few MHz. Such detectors ($^{40,42,44,48}$Ca$^{\scriptsize{+}}$) allow measuring extremely small forces, with measured normalized sensitivities down to $7.4(3.5)$ yN$/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ and $24.9(9.9)$ yN$/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ in the MHz and kHz regime, respectively. The direct determination of the ions' amplitudes makes a cyclotron-frequency measurement process more robust against inhomogeneities of the magnetic field and/or deviations of the electric quadrupole field due to mechanical imperfections of the trap., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

There is a growing interest in device-control systems that can interpret human natural language instructions and execute them on a digital device by directly controlling its user interface. We present a dataset for device-control research, Android in the Wild (AITW), which is orders of magnitude larger than current datasets. The dataset contains human demonstrations of device interactions, including the screens and actions, and corresponding natural language instructions. It consists of 715k episodes spanning 30k unique instructions, four versions of Android (v10-13),and eight device types (Pixel 2 XL to Pixel 6) with varying screen resolutions. It contains multi-step tasks that require semantic understanding of language and visual context. This dataset poses a new challenge: actions available through the user interface must be inferred from their visual appearance. And, instead of simple UI element-based actions, the action space consists of precise gestures (e.g., horizontal scrolls to operate carousel widgets). We organize our dataset to encourage robustness analysis of device-control systems, i.e., how well a system performs in the presence of new task descriptions, new applications, or new platform versions. We report computations of the vertical ionization potentials within the $GW$ approximation of the near-complete series of first-row transition metal (V-Cu) aqua ions in their most common oxidation states, i.e. V$^{3+}$, Cr$^{3+}$, Cr$^{2+}$, Mn$^{2+}$, Fe$^{3+}$, Fe$^{2+}$, Co$^{2+}$, Ni$^{2+}$, and Cu$^{2+}$. The $d$-orbital occupancy of these systems spans a broad range from $d^2$ to $d^9$. All the structures were first optimized at the density functional theory level using a large cluster of explicit water molecules that are embedded in a continuum solvation model. Vertical ionization potentials were computed with the one-shot $G_0W_0$ approach on a range of transition metal ion clusters (6, 18, 40, and 60 explicit water molecules) wherein the convergence with respect to the basis set size was evaluated using the systems with 40 water molecules. We assess the results using three different density functional approximations as starting points for the vertical ionization potential calculations, namely $G_0W_0$@PBE, $G_0W_0$@PBE0, and $G_0W_0$@r$^2$SCAN. While the predicted ground-state structures are similar with all three exchange-correlation functionals, the vertical ionization potentials were in closer agreement with the experiment when using the $G_0W_0$@PBE0 and $G_0W_0$@r$^2$SCAN approaches, with the r2SCAN based calculations being significantly less expensive. Computed bond distances and vertical ionization potentials for all structures were compared with available experimental data and are in good agreement.

Linear stability theory (LST) is often used to model the large-scale flow structures in the turbulent mixing region and near pressure field of high-speed jets. For perfectly-expanded single round jets, these models predict the dominance of $m=0$ and $m = 1$ helical modes for the lower frequency range, in agreement with empirical data. When LST is applied to twin-jet systems, four solution families appear following the odd/even behaviour of the pressure field about the symmetry planes. The interaction between the unsteady pressure fields of the two jets also results in their coupling. The individual modes of the different solution families no longer correspond to helical motions, but to flapping oscillations of the jet plumes. In the limit of large jet separations, when the jet coupling vanishes, the eigenvalues corresponding to the $m=1$ mode in each family are identical, and a linear combination of them recovers the helical motion. Conversely, as the jet separation decreases, the eigenvalues for the $m=1$ modes of each family diverge, thus favouring a particular flapping oscillation over the others and preventing the appearance of helical motions. The dominant mode of oscillation for a given jet Mach number $M_j$ and temperature ratio $T_R$ depends on the Strouhal number $St$ and jet separation $s$. Increasing both $M_j$ and $T_R$ independently is found to augment the jet coupling and modify the $(St,s)$ map of the preferred oscillation mode. Present results predict the preference of two modes when the jet interaction is relevant, namely varicose and especially sinuous flapping oscillations on the nozzles plane.

The changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of comprehensively considering its impacts and considering changes over time. Most COVID-19 related research addresses narrowly focused research questions and is therefore limited in addressing the complexities created by the interrelated impacts of the pandemic. Such research generally makes use of only one of either 1) actively collected data such as surveys, or 2) passively collected data. While a few studies make use of both actively and passively collected data, only one other study collects it longitudinally. Here we describe a rich panel dataset of active and passive data from U.S. residents collected between August 2020 and July 2021. Active data includes a repeated survey measuring travel behavior, compliance with COVID-19 mandates, physical health, economic well-being, vaccination status, and other factors. Passively collected data consists of all locations visited by study participants, taken from smartphone GPS data. We also closely tracked COVID-19 policies across counties of residence throughout the study period. Such a dataset allows important research questions to be answered; for example, to determine the factors underlying the heterogeneous behavioral responses to COVID-19 restrictions imposed by local governments. Better information about such responses is critical to our ability to understand the societal and economic impacts of this and future pandemics. The development of this data infrastructure can also help researchers explore new frontiers in behavioral science. The article explains how this approach fills gaps in COVID-19 related data collection; describes the study design and data collection procedures; presents key demographic characteristics of study participants; and shows how fusing different data streams helps uncover behavioral insights.

The novel application of a piezoelectric quartz resonator for the detection of trapped ions has developed in the observation of the quartz-ions interaction under non-equilibrium conditions, opening new perspectives for high-sensitive motional frequency measurements of radioactive particles. Energized quartz crystals have (long) constant-decay times in the order of milliseconds, permitting the coherent detection of charged particles within short times. In this publication we develop in detail a model governing the interaction between trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions and a quartz resonator connected to a low-noise amplifier. We apply this model to experimental data and extract relevant information like the coupling constant $g=2\pi \times 1.449(2)$~Hz and the ions' modified-cyclotron frequency in our 7-tesla Penning trap. The study on the latter is specially important for the use of this resonator in precision Penning-trap mass spectrometry. The improvement in sensitivity can be accomplished by increasing the coupling constant through the quality factor of the resonator. We develop matrix cryptography based on linear recurrent sequences of any order that allows securing encryption against brute force and chosen plaintext attacks. In particular, we solve the problem of generalizing error detection and correction algorithms of golden cryptography previously known only for recurrences of a special form. They are based on proving the checking relations (inequalities satisfied by the ciphertext) under the condition that the analog of the golden $Q$-matrix has the strong Perron-Frobenius property. These algorithms are proved to be especially efficient when the characteristic polynomial of the recurrence is a Pisot polynomial. Two-ion crystals constitute a platform for investigations of quantum nature that can be extended to any ion species or charged particle provided one of the ions in the crystal can be directly laser-cooled and manipulated with laser radiation. This paper presents the formation of two-ion crystals for quantum metrology in a 7-tesla open-ring Penning trap. $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions are produced either internally by photoionization or externally in a (Paul-trap) source, transported through the strong magnetic field gradient of the superconducting solenoid, and captured in-flight with a mean kinetic energy of a few electronvolts with respect to the minimum of the Penning-trap potential well. Laser cooling of the two-ion crystal in a strong magnetic field towards reaching the quantum regime is also presented with particular emphasis on the cooling of the radial modes.

The $GW$ approximation has been recently gaining popularity among the method for simulating molecular core-level X-ray photoemission spectra. Traditionally, $GW$ core-level binding energies have been computed using either the cc-pV$n$Z or def2-$n$ZVP basis set families, extrapolating the obtained results to the complete basis set limit, followed by a an element-specific relativistic correction. Despite of achieving good accuracy, these binding energies are chronically underestimated. By using first-row elements and standard techniques known to offer good cost-accuracy ratio in other theories, we show that the cc-pV$n$Z and def2-$n$ZVP families show large contraction errors and lead to unreliable complete basis set extrapolations. On the other hand, we demonstrate that uncontracted versions of these basis sets offer vastly improved convergence. Even faster convergence can be obtained using core-rich, property-optimized, basis sets families like pcSseg-$n$, pcJ-$n$ and ccX-$n$Z. Finally, we also show that the improvement over the core properties does not degrade the calculation of the valence excitations, and thus offer a balanced description of both core and valence regions.

We present a protocol to produce a class of non-thermal Fock state mixtures in trapped ions. This class of states features a clear metrological advantage with respect to the ground state, thus overcoming the standard quantum limit without the need for full sideband cooling and Fock-state preparation on a narrow electronic transition. The protocol consists in the cyclic repetition of red-sideband, measurement and preparation laser pulses. By means of the Kraus map representation of the protocol, it is possible to relate the length of the red sideband pulses to the specific class of states that can be generated. With the help of numerical simulations, we analyze the parametric regime where these states can be reliably reproduced., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures
