The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of richness and abundance of edaphic macrofauna in five grassland agroecosystems in Granma province. Samplings were carried out twice a year, once during rainy season and once in dry season, in the period between July 2014 and March 2017. The edaphic macrofauna was collected according to the standard methodology proposed by the Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility (TSBF) and by pitfall traps. An amount of 28,030 individuals was captured in the five agroecosystems, in the three years of research, of them 6,423 in monoliths and 21,607 in pitfall traps. The abundance and richness showed variable performance in both climatic periods in all the studied agroecosystems, with the two sampling methods. During dry season of the second year, a superior performance of macrofauna with respect to rainy period was observed. In Estación de Pastos agroecosystem, the greatest abundance and diversity of edaphic macrofauna was found, which confirms the beneficial effect of silvopastoral systems in this group of edaphic biota. It was concluded that, in the studied grassland agroecosystems, edaphic macrofauna had a heterogeneous performance in the evaluated seasons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cryptococcosis, a mycotic infection, had a sporadic presentation worldwide, but in the last two decades there has been an increase in the incidence of AIDS-related opportunistic infection, even considering it as the most frequent fungal meningitis in these patients. It is a deep mycosis, of a sub acute or chronic course, considered as opportunistic. For such reasons a case of a 32 year old, black patient is presented, with antecedents of bronchial asthma, smoker from 21 years before, alcoholic from 17 years and hypertensive (three years of evolution) without regular treatment. Four days before admission he started with headache, he was unconscious and Sphincter relaxation. He came to the emergency room of the Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Hospital where he was found to have stiff neck and his BP was de 200/120 mm Hg. His BP was lowered and the patient improved his clinical picture. On questioning he was found to have a disordered life style, without stable partner, on physical examination it was observed oral candidiasis and herpes simple in the lower lip. A rapid test for IDS was realized which resulted positive. He was admitted and microbiological studies of cerebrospinal fluid with Chinese ink staining that showed capsulated levaduriform cells, sign of Cryptococcus meningoencephalitis. Cryptococcus neoformans is a yeast-capped fungus, with marked neurotropism; it is the causal agent of cryptococcosis, deep fungal infection, of sub-acute or chronic course, considered as opportunistic. Cryptococcal meningitis presents distinctive clinical characteristics. In most cases it is acquired out of the hospital and develops sub acutely. If it is not treated it can be fatal in a few weeks. For these reasons it was decided the publication of this case of a 60 year old female patient who was brought to the Gustavo Aldereguía Hospital in Cienfuegos, with headache and loss of consciousness. On questioning there was information of a personal antecedent of headaches without apparent cause for some time ago. She was admitted conscious at the ICU. Some tests were performed, among them, microbiological study of cerebrospinal fluid and blood culture samples were taken, according to the standards established, were Cryptococcus neoformans was isolated. In order to evaluate the impact of indicators that influence on milk production of a genetic enterprise "Valle del Perú" from Mayabeque province, Cuba, information was gathered related to technical, economical, social and environmental indicators of five years were obtained. The analysis of main components showed that the first fourth components allowed to explain 68.38% of the variability of this enterprise. The first component known as "Economical impact of technologies" groups 18 variables and explains 40.90% of the variability. Impact is positive from October, 2007 to December, 2010, coinciding with the introduction of new grass species, as well as with other factors that influenced on the increase of milk production and on economical indicators. The second component is "Milk production" and it groups four variables (53.33% of variability). A very unstable performance is determined due to the two climatic periods and a negative impact is appreciated. Causes of this behavior are argued. It can be concluded that the application of this methodology (SMIM) allowed to know the impact of the main indicators on milk production of the enterprise, demonstrating the factors of highest incidence in this process. A strategy is proposed to be followed by the enterprise for its perfecting during the next stages. This enterprise should continue working on the strategy of rehabilitation and sowing of cultured pastures, as well as applying technologies to fight the consequences of the dry period. Likewise, it is recommended to evaluate the application of this methodology in each productive unit of the enterprise, as well as include new environmental variables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Con el objetivo de evaluar el impacto de los indicadores que influyen en la producción de leche de la empresa genética “Valle del Perú" de la provincia Mayabeque en Cuba, se procedió a recopilar la información, y see obtuvieron los indicadores técnicos, económicos, sociales y ambientales de 5 años. El análisis de CP mostró que los primeros 4 componentes permitieron explicar el 68.38 % de la variabilidad de dicha empresa. La primera componente denominada “Impacto económico de las tecnologías" agrupa 18 variables y explica el 40.90 % de la variabilidad. El impacto es positivo desde octubre del año 2007 hasta diciembre del 2010, coincidiendo esta etapa con la introducción de nuevas especies de pastos, así como con otros factores que influyeron en el incremento de la producción de leche y en los indicadores económicos. La segunda componente “Producción de leche" agrupa cuatro variables (53.33 % de variabilidad). Se determina un comportamiento muy inestable, debido a los dos períodos climáticos y se aprecia un impacto negativo. Se discute las causas de este comportamiento. Se concluye que la aplicación de la metodología (MEMI) permitió conocer el impacto de los principales indicadores en la producción de leche de la empresa, demostrando los factores que más inciden en este proceso. Se propone la estrategia a seguir por parte de la empresa para su perfeccionamiento en las próximas etapas, la cual debe seguir trabajando en la estrategia de rehabilitación y siembra de pastos cultivados, así como continuar aplicando tecnologías que contrarresten los efectos del período de seca. A su vez se recomienda evaluar la aplicación de esta metodología en cada unidad productiva de la empresa, así como incluir nuevas variables medioambientales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For studying the below ground root biomass performance in different grasslands of Mayabeque province, six dairy production units located in San José de las Lajas municipality were selected. They had different types of soils, grasslands and management systems. Samplings were carried out in both climatic periods and in each unit the most representative areas were chosen. Through a transept three soil samples were collected with 50 mm diameter cylinders, at two depths (0-5 and 5-10) to determine the below ground root biomass. In the studied profiles more than 80 % of the below ground root biomass is found in the soil layer 0-5 cm. There was no interaction between season and soil layer in the different daily units. Results obtained are great interest, since they evidence the potential contribution of organic matter to the soil. Also, from them the indices and diagnoses of soil resource can be predicted. Para evaluar el comportamiento de los indicadores biológicos del suelo se seleccionaron seis unidades de producción vacuna, ubicadas en el municipio San José de las Lajas, en la provincia Mayabeque. Se tuvieron en cuenta las siguientes condiciones: tipo de suelo, pastizales y sistemas de manejo. Se estudiaron diferentes indicadores de la actividad de la microflora (respiración basal e inducida por diferentes sustratos y actividad celulolítica), la macro y mesofauna. La actividad de la biomasa microbiana presentó pocas diferencias entre las unidades. Las magnitudes de la respiración basal en los suelos fue alta (0.85-1.18 mg CO2· g suelo-1). Todos los suelos respondieron a la adición de carbono, nitrógeno y fósforo. Desde el punto de vista de la calidad microbiológica, los de las unidades cuatro y cinco presentaron las mejores condiciones. En los diferentes agroecosistemas de pastizales se encontraron poblaciones de mesofauna. No se pudo predecir la dinámica poblacional de estos grupos en los meses de muestreo. Se determinó el menor número de ácaros y chollébolos con respecto a otros insectos. En la macrofauna del suelo hubo diferencias (P < 0.001) en cuanto al número de individuos y la biomasa entre los dos estratos estudiados en todas las unidades, excepto en la uno y cuatro. Las unidades tres, cuatro y cinco mostraron valores superiores, entre 2.5 y 2.33 individuos m-2. Sin embargo, la uno (14 de Valle del Perú) y dos (Genético 4), que presentaron menores poblaciones, tuvieron valores de biomasa superiores. Las lombrices, las larvas de coleópteros y las hormigas constituyeron los grupos principales en los ecosistemas estudiados. Los suelos no presentan signos de degradación microbiológica y estuvieron presentes los demás grupos edáficos del suelo (meso y macrofauna). Se concluye que los indicadores biológicos en todas las unidades estudiadas son apropiados. Six cattle production units were selected to evaluate the soil biological indicators. They were located in the San José de las Lajas municipality, in the Mayabeque province. The following conditions were considered: soil type, grasslands, and management systems. Different indicators of the microflora activity (basal respiration and induced by different substrates and cellulolytic activity), and the macro and the mesofauna were studied. The microbial biomass activity had little differences between the units. The magnitudes of the basal respiration in the soils were high (0.85-1.18 mg CO2. g soil-1). All the soils responded to the addition of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. From the point of view of the microbiological quality, the units four and five had the best conditions. There were mesofauna populations in the different grassland agroecosystems. The population dynamics of these groups could not be predicted in the sampling months. The number of acari and collembolans was determined as compared with other insects. In the soil macrofauna, there were differences (P < 0.001) as to the number of individuals and the biomass between the two strata under study in all the units, except the one and the four. The units three, four, and five showed superior values, between 2.5 and 2.33 individuals m-1. However, the one (14 de Valle del Perú) and two (Genético 4), with smaller populations, had superior biomass values. The earthworms, the Coleoptera larvae, and the ants were the main groups in the ecosystems under study. The soils did not show signs of microbiological degradation and there was presence of the rest of the edaphic soil groups (meso and macrofauna). It was concluded that the biological indicators were appropriate in all the units under study. Further study is recommended, at long term, as well as making new studies with cultural practices that stimulate the species diversity in the grasslands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study was performed by part of a multidisciplinary team to assess the soil-plant compound in a dairy unit with silvopastoral system, located in the Havana province, in the western part of the country. It provides information about the soils and the grassland in respect to their integral characterization of chemical (content of N, P, Ca, Mg, and OM), physical (granulometry composition and microstructure, apparent density, field capacity, specific weight, total porosity per calculation, resistance to penetration, coefficient of dispersion) and biologic (basal respiration (BR)of the soil and induced by substrates, total number of individuals, population of acari, collembolans and other insects, number of individuals and biomass of the macrofauna) indicators. The integral study of the indicators permitted to determine with higher accuracy the degree of stability of the soil, as well as the influence of the grassland condition and the predominant type of soil. It was determined that there is a trend to the physical degradation of the soil. The values of apparent density were low (1.11 g/cm³ ) and there was trend to dispersion, which leads to the deterioration of the structural stability of the soil. In general terms, the chemical composition of the soil had acceptable levels. Ca, Mg and P were the most variable elements. The studies of the soil biology indicated that there are no signs of microbiological degradation. They are characterized by having biologically assimilable nitrogen sources and potentially active microfauna that responds to the addition of external sources of C, N, and P. Populations of meso and macrofauna were determined. The population of other insects were the most outstanding group of the mesofauna having the lowest number of acari and collembolans, although it was not possible to predict a population dynamics in these groups. In the macrofauna, among the main individuals, earth worms, coleopteran larvae and ants were noteworthy. As to the plant component, it was evidenced that natural pastures occupied 66 % of the species and the leaf litter accumulation did not surpass 25 g DM/m² . Leucaena was not available for the animals and the pasture availability was of approximately 1.2 t DM/m² . In general, the seasonal changes were the factor influencing the most the variation of underground phytomass. The evaluation of the degree of soil stability and the grassland productivity showed that in this system the low accumulation of leaf litter from the grassland and the low levels of infiltration were the most limiting factors. It is concluded that the silvopastoral system in this dairy unit contributed positively to the evaluation of some soil indicators. El estudio se realizó por parte de un equipo multidisciplinario, para evaluar el complejo suelo-planta en una unidad lechera con un sistema de silvopastoreo, ubicada en la provincia La Habana, en el occidente del país. Se ofrece información acerca de los suelos y del pastizal, en lo que respecta a su caracterización integral de indicadores químicos (contenido de N, P, Ca, Mg, pH y MO), físicos (composición granulométrica y microestructura, densidad aparente, capacidad de campo, peso específico, porosidad total por cálculo, resistencia a la penetración, coeficiente de dispersión) y biológicos (respiración basal del suelo (RB) e inducida por sustratos, número de individuos totales, población de ácaros, collembolos y otros insectos, número de individuos y biomasa de la macrofauna). El estudio integrado de los indicadores permitió determinar con mayor precisión el grado de estabilidad del suelo, así como la influencia de la condición del pastizal y el tipo de suelo predominante. Se determinó que existe tendencia a la degradación física del suelo. Los valores de la densidad aparente fueron bajos (1.11 g/cm³ ) y hubo tendencia a la dispersión, lo que conduce al deterioro de la estabilidad estructural del suelo. En términos generales, la composición química del suelo presentó niveles aceptables. El Ca, Mg y el P fueron los elementos más variables. Los estudios de biología del suelo indicaron que no hay signos de degradación microbiológica. Estos se caracterizan por presentar fuentes de nitrógeno biológicamente asimilables y una microflora potencialmente activa, que responde a la adición de fuentes externas de C, N y P. Se determinaron poblaciones de meso y macrofauna. Las poblaciones de otros insectos constituyeron el grupo más destacado en la mesofauna, donde se encontró un menor número de ácaros y collembolos, aunque no fue posible predecir una dinámica poblacional de estos grupos. En la macrofauna, entre los principales individuos, se destacaron las lombrices, las larvas de coleópteros y las hormigas. En cuanto al componente vegetal, se evidenció que los pastos naturales ocupan el 66 % de las especies presentes y la acumulación de hojarasca no superó los 25 g de MS/m² . La leucaena no se encuentra disponible para los animales y la disponibilidad del pasto es de 1.2 t de MS/ha, aproximadamente. Por lo general, los cambios estacionales constituyeron el factor que más influyó en la variación de la fitomasa subterránea. La evaluación del grado de estabilidad de los suelos y la productividad del pastizal mostró que en este sistema la baja acumulación de hojarasca del pastizal y los bajos niveles de infiltración fueron los factores que más la limitaron. Se concluye que la presencia del silvopastoreo en esta unidad contribuyó positivamente a la evaluación de algunos indicadores del suelo. A methodology is proposed according to fertility indicators of the soil (organic matter, total nitrogen, assimilable phosphorous, calcium, pH, resistance to penetration, leaf litter, infiltration and biological activity) previously selected in grasslands of six cattle units of Havana province. It is based on radial figures that represent, according to the value scale, the state of each indicator and allow estimating the general fertility state of the soil of the cattle unit. Results showed that, with higher frequency, infiltration and leaf litter were the less favourable indicators. The possible relations between the obtained points and the characteristics of the plants and the type of soil are discussed. The proposed methodology allows a more integral interpretation of the soil fertility and could be a favourable tool for the selection of sustainable techniques to improve the less favourable indicators. Se propone una metodología a partir de indicadores de fertilidad del suelo (materia orgánica, nitrógeno total, fósforo asimilable, calcio, pH, resistencia a la penetración, hojarasca, infiltración y actividad biológica), previamente seleccionados en pastizales de seis vaquerías de la provincia La Habana. Esta se basa en figuras radiales que representan, según la escala de valores, el estado de cada indicador, y permite estimar el estado general de fertilidad del suelo de la unidad ganadera. Los resultados indicaron que, con mayor frecuencia, la infiltración y la hojarasca, fueron los indicadores menos favorables. Se discuten las posibles relaciones entre las puntuaciones obtenidas y las características de la vegetación y el tipo de suelo. La metodología que se propone permite la interpretación más integral de la fertilidad del suelo, y podría constituir una favorable herramienta de trabajo para seleccionar técnicas sostenibles para el mejoramiento de los indicadores menos favorables. Se señalan los resultados obtenidos en el departamento de Pastos y Forrajes del Instituto de Ciencia Animal, relacionados con la evaluación de indicadores que permiten determinar el efecto de la producción ganadera en la estabilidad y sostenibilidad del sistema suelo-pasto-animal. Se refieren los principales indicadores seleccionados y se proponen tablas con rangos de valores que permiten su interpretación. La utilización de estas metodologías permite determinar la estabilidad del sistema suelo-planta en los ecosistemas de pastizales, así como trabajar con un número reducido de indicadores que constituyen una herramienta útil para los productores e investigadores. In the western region of the country, the software Recycling of Nutrients was applied in nine units of milk production in the provinces of Havana (6) and Matanzas (3). The compilation of the data needed for determining the balance of N, P and K was performed during a year in each of the units studied. It was observed that in all of the cases the balance of P was negative, both in the soil an in the system and frequently K had also negative unbalance. The balance of N in the soil was negative in years; however, at the system level it was positive in all the cases. The absence of N unbalance in four units may be associated mainly with the application of nitrogenous fertilization and the presence of leucaena in these units. The highest percentage of input of this nutrient was produced by the supplements provided to the animals (generally between 30 and 90 %), whereas the N fixed had an important participation in those cattle units in which leucaena was present. On the other hand, the excretions deposited by the animals out of the system (mainly in the shade pens) represented the highest percentage of output of this nutrient. Among the main sources of N incorporation in the soils, it may be highlighted that in most of the units the contribution of the excretions was the highest source of income (between 50 and 60 % of the total), except the units where nitrogenous fertilizer was also used and the presence of leucaena represented also an important proportion. The application of the software in different cattle units of the western region of the country demonstrated its potentials to obtain results that reflect the status of balance of nutrients both in the system and in the soil. On the whole, there was unbalance of P, which should be taken into account to recommend its application to keep the stability of the systems. Also, K showed unbalance in most of the cases. It is interesting to clarify that the nitrogen balance may be favourable in the units having leucaena and some amounts of nitrogenous fertilizer. The software showed that the excretions are one of the main sources of input of nutrients in the soil. However, it was possible to assess that the highest percentage of output of nutrients in the system occurs by the excreta accumulated in the facilities and that they are not return to the grassland. The article discusses a study which determines the effect of the dung patches and the micturitions, deposited on the grassland by the animals and artificially, on the yield and chemical composition of the pasture and the soil covered by them. A significant effect of the dung patches and the micturitions was found on the pasture yield in almost all the deposition months, both in the excretions deposited artificially and in those deposited directly by the cows in the grazing area.

The article provides information on a study which examined the activity of the mesofauna and the macrofauna in cow dung patches and on the soil covered by Cuban researchers during the process of decomposition in a grassland agroecosystem. A linear model was used to analyze the data of the macrofauna and the mesofauna. Also considered in the study were the effect of the moment or month of deposition, the number of dung patches collected and the days since they were deposited.

The article highlights the results of a study on the distribution of cattle dungs in two agroecosystems, namely a stargrass field and a grassland comprising star grasses and carob trees. The distribution of dungs in the first grassland was determined by counting 7,500 square meter paddock during 8 consecutive rotations. Dungs occupied 17.01 square meters as average in the paddock, which represented 0.23 percent in one rotation. The distribution of dungs was higher in the second grassland.

The article discusses research which determined the performance of biomass and the diversity of the soil macrofauna in different types of grasslands. The study found that there was interaction between the systems of bull fattening and dairying and the years studied for all the indicators. It suggests that the biomass was higher in the systems on calcimorphic humic and calcic brown soils which indicates that the macrofauna performance varied between the systems studied.

The article studies the amount, frequency and place of dairy cattle manure deposition and urination in a commercial dairy unit under rotational grazing system. The study used a completely randomized model to determine the differences between seasons. It recommends maximum permanence of the animals in the grassland to increase the recycling of nutrients from excretions.

The article deals with a study that examined the performance of the soil macrofauna in cattle production systems with or without leucaena in the native grasslands. This study used a linear model of fixed effects. Results of the study showed that there was a grassland type x year interaction in a number of soil macrofauna individuals. It also found that there was a greater biomass value and a higher soil humidity in the native grassland with leucaena.

The article discusses research which examined the different method using growth hormones that could stimulate the asexual reproduction of Leucaena leococephala. A random block design with six replications was used. The study found that a lower concentration of 1 kilogram of zeolite powder (F-ICA-1) produced a more integral biological result, and that it is feasible to use auxins for the asexual reproduction of Leucaena leococephala.

The results of the department of Pastures and Forages at the Institute of Animal Science are indicated and related to the assessment of indicators to determine the effect of livestock production on the stability and sustainability of the system soil-pasture-animal. The main indicators were selected and there is a proposal of tables with value ranges for their interpretation. The utilization of these methodologies helps to determine the stability of the system soil-plant on the grassland ecosystems, as well as to work with a reduced number of indicators being a useful tool for farmers and researchers. The article presents a study of the effect of the evolution of a leucaena-guinea grass system on the soil macrofauna. In the study, the number of individuals m&sup-2;, the macrofauna biomass (g m&sup-2), the species richness (S), the individual species, the soil humidity and the production of leaf litter were determined. The findings showed interaction between the sowing years and the different evolutionary times of the system for the number of individuals and the biomass of the soil macrofauna.

The article discusses research being done on the production of leaf litter and contribution of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in two grasslands with different species composition. The results of the study found that it is convenient to plant shrub and tree species in grasslands composed of grasses for increasing leaf litter production and make more efficient the biogeochemical cycle of nutrients.

The effect of the agroecosystems natural grassland, protein bank and sugarcane on the dynamics of the populations of L. terrestris was studied in a completely randomized design with three treatments (agroecosystems): natural grassland, protein bank and sugarcane in a factorial arrangement 3 x 3 x 2. The experiment was conducted in 1999, 2000 and 2001, at the beginning and end of the rainy season. The results showed significant (P < 0.001) interactions of the agroecosystems with the years. There was stability in the population density (earthworms m2 -1), with average at the third year of the study 128.75 and 86.25 in the natural grassland and the sugarcane, respectively. In the protein bank, there were differences between the first and the last year, with 98.75 individuals m2 -1 at the end of 2001. In regards to the interactions of the agroecosystems with the season (P < 0.05), no differences were observed between the natural grassland and the protein bank. The latter did not differ from sugarcane, compared to the samplings at the end of the rainy season. At the beginning of this season, there were no differences between the agroecosystems. Likewise, there were no differences between the seasons for each agroecosytem. The interactions of the years with the seasons (P < 0.001) showed differences between the first and the last year within each season, with an average of 99.16 and 137.00 individuals at the end of the rainy season and its beginnings, respectively. It is concluded that the agroecosystems natural grassland and sugarcane kept the earthworm density and they were increased in the protein bank, in agreement with the agroecological principles. The survival and density of these individuals in the different seasons allow confirming their great ecological flexibility, as well as the appropriate management of the agroecosystems studied. En un diseño completamente aleatorizado con tres tratamientos (agroecosistemas): pastizal natural (PN), banco de proteína (BP) y caña de azúcar (caña) y en arreglo factorial 3 x 3 x 2 se estudió el efecto de los agroecosistemas PN, BP y caña en la dinámica de las poblaciones de L. terrestris. El experimento se condujo durante los años 1999, 2000 y 2001, al inicio del período lluvioso (IPLL) y al finalizar el mismo (FPLL). Los resultados mostraron interacciones significativas (P < 0.001) para los agroecosistemas con los años. Hubo estabilidad en la densidad de población (lombrices m² -1), con un promedio al tercer año de estudio de 128.75 y 86.25 en el PN y caña, respectivamente. En el BP se evidenciaron diferencias entre el primer y último año, con 98.75 individuos m² -1 al final de 2001. Con respecto a las interacciones de los agroecosistemas con la época, (P < 0.05) no se observaron diferencias entre el PN y el BP. Este último no difirió de la caña, cuando se compararon los muestreos al final del período lluvioso. Al inicio del mismo no hubo diferencias entre los agroecosistemas. Asimismo, no hubo diferencias entre las épocas para cada uno de los agroecosistemas. Las interacciones de los años con las épocas (P < 0.001) mostraron diferencias entre el primer y último año, dentro de cada época, con un promedio de 99.16 y 137.00 individuos al final del período lluvioso y en sus inicios, respectivamente. Se concluye que los agroecosistemas de PN y caña mantuvieron la densidad de lombrices y se incrementaron en el BP conforme a los principios agroecológicos. La supervivencia y densidad de estos individuos en las distintas épocas nos permiten confirmar su gran plasticidad ecológica, así como el manejo apropiado de los agroecosistemas estudiados.
