Wine is a temperature, light, and oxygen-sensitive product, so its physicochemical characteristics can be modified by variations in temperature and time when samples are either sampled, transported, and/or analyzed. These changes can alter its metabolomic fingerprinting, impacting further classification tasks and quality/quantitative analyses. For these reasons, the aim of this work is to compare and analyze the information obtained by different chemometric methods used in a complementary form (PCA, ASCA, and PARAFAC) to study 1H-NMR spectra variations of four red wine samples kept at different temperatures and time lapses. In conjunction, distinctive changes in the spectra are satisfactorily tracked with each chemometric method. The chemometric analyses reveal variations related to the wine sample, temperature, and time, as well as the interactions among these factors. Moreover, the magnitude and statistical significance of the effects are satisfactorily accounted for by ASCA, while the time-related effects variations are encountered by PARAFAC modeling. Acetaldehyde, formic acid, polyphenols, carbohydrates, lactic acid, ethyl lactate, methanol, choline, succinic acid, proline, acetoin, acetic acid, 1,3-propanediol, isopentanol, and some amino acids are identified as some of the metabolites which present the most important variations. A free energy-based conceptual theoretical framework from which the conditional equilibrium constant can be comprehensibly understood is presented. This constant is found to be a weighted geometric mean of the equilibrium constants of the reactions of all forms of the conditioned species under buffering conditions, where the weight is given by a function of their predominance in terms of their mole fractions. Once it is shown that this type of equilibrium constant can be easily deduced form free energy functions, it is shown how corrections for activity coefficient can be incorporated as well. The framework additionally permits to interpret side-reactions coefficients as free energy terms related to the chemical speciation of the system, allowing the use of the generalization of Hess' law to obtain conditional constants and a straightforward deduction of multiconditional equilibrium constants. Furthermore, different uses of the conditional constants along the actual literature are reviewed as well allowing to have a complete and updated panorama of the employment of this important concept in chemical and speciation analysis in many areas of research. Preterm newborns are extremely vulnerable to morbidities, complications, and death. Preterm birth is a global public health problem due to its socioeconomic burden. Nurturing preterm newborns is a critical medical issue because they have limited nutrient stores and it is difficult to establish enteral feeding, which leads to inadequate growth frequently associated with poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. Parenteral nutrition (PN) provides nutrients to preterm newborns, but its biochemical effects are not completely known. To study the effect of PN treatment on preterm newborns, an untargeted metabolomic 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) assay was performed on 107 urine samples from 34 hospitalized patients. Multivariate data (Principal Component Analysis, PCA, Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis OPLS-DA, parallel factor analysis PARAFAC-2) and univariate analyses were used to identify the association of specific spectral data with different nutritional types (NTs) and gestational ages. Our results revealed changes in the metabolic profile related to the NT, with the tricarboxylic acid cycle and galactose metabolic pathways being the most impacted pathways. Low citrate and succinate levels, despite higher glucose relative urinary concentrations, seem to constitute the metabolic profile found in the studied critically ill preterm newborns who received PN, indicating an energetic dysfunction that must be taken into account for better nutritional management. A polymeric membrane-supported catalyst with immobilized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was prepared through the extraction and in situ reduction of AuIII salts in a one-step strategy. Polymeric inclusion membranes (PIMs) and polymeric nanoporous membranes (PNMs) were tested as different membrane-support systems. Transport experiments indicated that PIMs composed of cellulose triacetate, 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether, and an aliphatic tertiary amine (Adogen 364 or Alamine 336) were the most efficient supports for AuIII extraction. The simultaneous extraction and reduction processes were proven to be the result of a synergic phenomenon in which all the membrane components were involved. Scanning electron microscopy characterization of cross-sectional samples suggested a distribution of AuNPs throughout the membrane. Transmission electron microscopy characterization of the AuNPs indicated average particle sizes of 36.7 and 2.9 nm for the PIMs and PNMs, respectively. AuNPs supported on PIMs allowed for >95.4 % reduction of a 0.05 mmol L−1 4-nitrophenol aqueous solution with 10 mmol L−1 NaBH4 solution within 25 min. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New hybrid semi-interpenetrating proton-conducting membranes were obtained using sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) and inorganic-organic polysiloxane phases with the aim of improving the mechanical and thermal characteristics of the pristine polymer and to study the effects of crosslinking in the latter phase in several of their properties, mainly proton conductivity. Siloxane phases were prepared using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and PDMS with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) or phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS) as crosslinking agents. To study the crosslinking effect, membranes were prepared with different TEOS:PDMS and PTMS:PDMS mole ratios. The films obtained were characterized by FTIR, 29Si-HPDEC MAS-NMR, 13C-CP-MAS NMR, elemental and thermal analyses. Certain properties, such as water uptake (WU), ion exchange capacity (IEC) and the state of the water, were determined. The proton conductivity was measured at different temperatures (30°C and 80°C) and relative humidities (50-95%). The water content of the hybrid membranes declined significantly, compared with the SPS membranes, depending on the nature and amount of siloxane phase added. Nonetheless, the conductivity values remained relatively high (>100 mS cm−1 at 80°C and 95% RH) when compared to Nafion®117 presumably because of the formation of well developed proton channels, which makes them potentially promising as proton exchange membranes for fuel cells. These membranes proved to be thermally stable up to 350°C. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) for hydrogen and methanol have attracted the attention of research groups for many years mainly because they are promising candidates for clean and renewable power sources. The most common commercial product used as PEM is Nafion®. However, certain limitations and high production costs stimulate the research of new materials. In this work, new hybrid proton-conducting membranes for PEMFC based on sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) and an inorganic–organic polysiloxane phase were obtained with the objective of improving its mechanical, thermal, and chemical resistance properties. The hybrid membranes were prepared by dissolving the base polymer in DMSO and adding different amounts of the polysiloxane phase previously obtained from polydimethylsiloxane and a cross-linking agent (tetraethyl orthosilicate or phenyltrimetoxysilane). Membranes were characterized using infrared spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Macroscopic properties as water uptake, ion-exchange capacity, and proton conductivity were determined. The methanol permeabilities were in the range of 5.53 × 10−7 − 8.36 × 10−7 cm2/s, which is several times lower than that of Nafion®117 (1.55 × 10−6 cm2/s). The hybrid membranes with both cross-linkers also exhibited higher proton conductivity with respect to Nafion®117 (40 mS/cm) at 80°C and 90% relative humidity. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Polymer inclusion membranes containing cellulose triacetate as support, Ionquest® 801 ((2–ethylhexyl acid) -mono (2–ethylhexyl) phosphonic ester) as extractant, and 2NPOE (o–nitrophenyl octyl ether) or TBEP (tri (2–butoxyethyl phosphate)) as plasticizers were characterized using several instrumental techniques (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT–IR), Reflection Infrared Mapping Microscopy (RIMM), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)) with the aim of determining physical and chemical parameters (structure, electric resistance, dielectric constant, thickness, components' distributions, glass transition temperature, stability) that allow a better comprehension of the role that the plasticizer plays in PIMs designed for In(III) transport. In comparison to TBEP, 2NPOE presents less dispersion and affinity in the PIMs, a plasticizer effect at higher content, higher membrane resistance and less permittivity, and a pronounced drop in the glass transition temperature. However, the increase in permittivity with In (III) sorption is more noticeable and, in general, PIMs with 2NPOE present higher permeability values. These facts indicate that In (III) transport is favored in membranes with chemical environment of high polarity and efficiently plasticized. A drawback is the decrease in stability because of the minor affinity among the components in 2NPOE–PIMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
