Abstract

We present the spectral and timing evolution of the persistent black hole X-ray binary GRS 1758-258 based on almost 12 years of observations using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array. While the source was predominantly found in the hard state during this time, it entered the thermally dominated soft state seven times. In the soft state GRS 1758-258 shows a strong decline in flux above 3 keV rather than the pivoting flux around 10 keV more commonly shown by black hole transients. In its 3-20 keV hardness intensity diagram, GRS 1758-258 shows a hysteresis of hard and soft state fluxes typical for transient sources in outburst. The RXTE-PCA and RXTE-ASM long-term light curves do not show any orbital modulations in the range of 2 to 30 d. However, in the dynamic power spectra significant peaks drift between 18.47d and 18.04d for the PCA data, while less significant signatures between 19d and 20d are seen for the ASM data as well as for the Swift/BAT data. Abstract

We have assembled a tiled array (220 cm2) of fine pixel (0.6 mm) imaging CZT detectors for a balloon borne wide-field hard X-ray telescope, ProtoEXIST2. ProtoEXIST2 is a prototype experiment for a next generation hard X-ray imager MIRAX-HXI on board Lattes, a spacecraft from the Agencia Espacial Brasilieira. MIRAX will survey the 5 to 200 keV sky of Galactic bulge, adjoining southern Galactic plane and the extragalactic sky with 6' angular resolution. This survey will open a vast discovery space in timing studies of accretion neutron stars and black holes. The ProtoEXIST2 CZT detector plane consists of 64 of 5 mm thick 2 cm x 2 cm CZT crystals tiled with a minimal gap. MIRAX will consist of 4 such detector planes, each of which will be imaged with its own coded-aperture mask. We present the packaging architecture and assembly procedure of the ProtoEXIST2 detector. On 2012, Oct 10, we conducted a successful high altitude balloon experiment of the ProtoEXIST1 and 2 telescopes, which demonstrates their technology readiness for space application. During the flight both telescopes performed as well as on the ground. Abstract

The MIRAX X-ray observatory, the first Brazilian-led astrophysics space mission, is designed to perform an unprecedented wide-field, wide-band hard X-ray (5-200 keV) survey of Galactic X-ray transient sources. In the current configuration, MIRAX will carry a set of four coded-mask telescopes with high spatial resolution Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detector planes, each one consisting of an array of 64 closely tiled CZT pixelated detectors. Taken together, the four telescopes will have a total detection area of 959 cm^2, a large field of view (60x60 degrees FWHM), high angular resolution for this energy range (6 arcmin) and very good spectral resolution (~2 keV @ 60 keV). A stratospheric balloon-borne prototype of one of the MIRAX telescopes has been developed, tested and flown by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) as part of the ProtoEXIST program. In this paper we show results of validation and calibration tests with individual CZT detectors of the ProtoEXIST second generation experiment (P2). Each one of 64 detector units of the P2 detector plane consists of an ASIC, developed by Caltech for the NuSTAR telescope, hybridized to a CZT crystal with 0.6 mm pixel size. The performance of each detector was evaluated using radioactive sources in the laboratory. The calibration results show that the P2 detectors have average energy resolution of ~2.1 keV @ 60 keV and ~2.3 keV @ 122 keV. P2 was also successfully tested on near-space environment on a balloon flight, demonstrating the detector unit readiness for integration on a space mission telescope, as well as satisfying all MIRAX mission requirements., Comment: accepted for publication in Journal of Instrumentation

Abstract

Context. Although beef consumption has been linked to increased blood cholesterol, it has positive impacts on human health and provides essential nutrients of high biological value. Aims. This study investigated the effects of aging time on beef quality, the chemical composition of the Longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle, and the metabolite and fatty acid profile of the subcutaneous fat from young bulls finished in feedlot with a high-lipid diet. Methods. Fifty young bulls were divided into groups following their breed composition, Nellore (n = 25) and Angus × Nellore crossbred (n = 25), and randomly assigned into four pens. The feedlot phase consisted of 105 days of feed, and the diet (80% concentrate) was formulated to meet or safely exceed the requirements of beef cattle to achieve an average daily gain of 1.6 kg/day. After slaughter, meat samples were collected between the 11th and 13th ribs 24 h postmortem. Steaks were aged for 1, 14, 28, and 42 days. Key results. No differences were observed for total weight loss, drip loss, and cooking loss between the genetic groups (P > 0.05). An increase in lipid oxidation was observed for TBARS in the LT beef and subcutaneous fat (P < 0.01). Shear force was influenced by breed and aging time (P < 0.01). There was a significant interaction between aging time and the parameters L* a*, b* c*, and h* (P < 0.01). The crossbred animals had greater (P < 0.01) concentrations of collagen, and Nellore had greater (P < 0.01) concentration of moisture in their LT beef. In total, 33 metabolites were identified in beef extract, and differences were observed in beef from both groups. Nellore animals had higher concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid. Conclusions. The shear force, collagen concentration, and moisture were affected by breeds, while the aging time affected lipid oxidation, shear force, and colour parameters. Different breeds and a high-lipid diet modified the metabolite profile of meat and the profile of subcutaneous fat. Implications. Resumo Este artigo se propõe a abordar o uso dos espaços públicos pelos movimentos organizados que conduziram milhares de pessoas às ruas entre março de 2015 e março de 2016, situações que culminaram no impeachment da Presidenta Dilma Rousseff. Parte da premissa de que, embora a organização dessas manifestações tenha ocorrido por meio das redes sociais, foi na apropriação do espaço público pelos respectivos grupos que elas se concretizaram. De uma forma mais tímida, por conta da pandemia de COVID-19, os manifestantes voltaram às ruas no ano de 2020. Para a pesquisa, utilizou-se do aporte teórico acerca da estruturação do espaço urbano e de sua dimensão simbólica, seguida da compilação das informações referentes às manifestações por meio dos grandes jornais em circulação. O balanço que se faz é que o local das manifestações seguiu a lógica simbólica da estruturação do espaço urbano, pois o grupo contrário ao impeachment teve seu espaço de manifestação associado ao centro principal das cidades e os grupos que exigiam a retirada da Presidenta se ocuparam dos espaços identificados com a reprodução do capital financeiro e/ou moradia das elites - lógica mantida durante as manifestações ocorridas no ano de 2020. Resumen Este artículo se propone abordar el uso de los espacios públicos por parte de los movimientos organizados que llevaron a miles de personas a las calles entre marzo de 2015 y marzo de 2016 y que culminaron con la destitución de la presidenta Dilma Rousseff. Parte de la premisa de que aunque la organización de estas manifestaciones se produjo a través de las redes sociales, fue en la apropiación del espacio público por parte de los respectivos grupos donde se materializaron. De forma más tímida, debido a la pandemia de COVID 19, los manifestantes volvieron a las calles en 2020. Para la investigación, utilizamos el aporte teórico sobre la estructuración del espacio urbano y su dimensión simbólica, seguido de la recopilación de información sobre las manifestaciones a través de los principales periódicos en circulación. El balance es que la localización de las manifestaciones siguió la lógica simbólica de la estructuración del espacio urbano, donde el grupo contra el impeachment tuvo su espacio de manifestación asociado al centro principal de las ciudades y los grupos que exigían la destitución de la presidenta ocuparon los espacios identificados con la reproducción del capital financiero y/o la vivienda de las élites. Esta lógica se mantuvo durante las manifestaciones que tuvieron lugar en 2020. Abstract This article addresses the use of public spaces by organized movements that led thousands of people to the streets between March 2015 and March 2016 and culminated in the President Dilma Rousseff impeachment. It starts from the premise that although the organization of these manifestations occurred through social networks, it was in the appropriation of public space by respective groups that they took place. In a timider way, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the protesters returned to the streets in 2020. For the research, we used the theoretical contribution of urban space structuration and its symbolic dimension, followed by the compilation of information regarding protests published at major newspapers in circulation. The balance shows that the location of social manifestations followed the symbolic logic of urban space structuration, where the group opposed to the impeachment had its space of demonstration associated with the main center of cities and the groups that demanded the withdrawal of President Roussef occupied the spaces identified with the reproduction of financial capital and/or elite housing. This logic was maintained during the demonstrations that took place in 2020. Résumé Cet article propose d'aborder l'utilisation des espaces publics par des mouvements organisés qui ont conduit des milliers de personnes dans la rue entre mars 2015 et mars 2016, situations qui ont abouti à la destitution de la présidente Dilma Rousseff. Elle part du postulat que, si l'organisation de ces manifestations s'est faite à travers les réseaux sociaux, c'est dans l'appropriation de l'espace public par les groupes respectifs qu'elles ont eu lieu. De manière plus timide, en raison de la pandémie de COVID-19, les manifestants sont revenus dans la rue en 2020. Pour la recherche, on a utilisé l'apport théorique sur la structuration de l'espace urbain et sa dimension symbolique, suivi de la compilation d'informations sur les manifestations à travers les principaux journaux en circulation. Le bilan fait est que le lieu des manifestations suivait la logique symbolique de la structuration de l'espace urbain, puisque le groupe opposé à la destitution avait son espace de manifestation associé au centre principal des villes et aux groupes qui réclamaient la destitution du Président a occupé les espaces identifiés à la reproduction du capital financier et/ou du logement élitiste - logique maintenue lors des manifestations qui ont eu lieu en 2020.
