This paper reports a comprehensive study of single-phase polycrystalline chromium-doped zinc gallogermanate (ZGGO:Cr) synthesised by a high-temperature solid-state reaction, employing photoluminescence (PL), persistent luminescence (PersL) and thermoluminescence (TL) measurements. A bandgap energy of ∼4.77 eV (260 nm) was estimated by optical reflectance. The ZGGO:Cr luminescence was dominated by a red/near-infrared emission due to Cr3+ optical centres, which displayed well-resolved R1, R2, N1 and N2 lines, and a broad vibronic progression. PL excitation (PLE) data revealed that those centres were preferentially populated via intraionic absorption, being also excited via band-to-band absorption and by a defect excitation band at ∼0.9 eV below the conduction band, whose origin remains unknown. PersL of more than 10 h was identified and attributed to the N2 Cr3+-related defect. The TL results suggest a continuous distribution of electronic states with activation energies ranging from about 0.7 eV to 1.2 eV. An effective density of states was obtained for different delay times between irradiation and heating, revealing a rapid depopulation for activation energies below ∼1 eV. In short, this research contributes to a better understanding of traps in ZGGO:Cr and highlights the potential of the Cr3+-related emission in this material for dosimetric purposes, paving the way for developing novel ZGGO:Cr-based devices. Background/Objectives: Urinary tract infections (UTI) represent a highly frequent and debilitating disease. Immunoactive prophylaxis, such as the polyvalent bacterial whole-cell-based sublingual vaccine MV140, have been developed to avoid antibiotic use. However, the effectiveness of this tool in the Portuguese population is still unknown. This study aims at assessing the effectiveness of treatment with MV140 in a cohort of Portuguese patients presenting with recurrent UTIs. Methods: Prospective observational real-life study of 125 patients with complicated and uncomplicated recurrent UTIs treated with MV140. The primary outcome was a reduction in frequency and severity of UTIs after a follow-up of 12 months. Overall satisfaction, adverse events, and assessment of the effectiveness of MV140 in subgroups of patients with specific risk factors for UTIs were secondary outcomes. Results: In the 12 months after treatment outset, 38% of patients were UTI-free, 34% reported 1 or 2 UTI episodes, and the remaining 28% presented 3 or more UTIs, corresponding to a mean reduction of 3.20 (2.87–3.53, 95% C.I.; p < 0.001) UTI episodes per year per patient. The effectiveness of MV140 was the same regardless of sex, BMI, regular sexual activity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, depression, paraplegia, performance of intermittent self-catheterization, indwelling bladder catheter, or previous use of other UTI-preventing vaccines. We observed a higher effectiveness in post-menopausal women compared to pre-menopausal (74.7% vs. 59.4%, respectively, p = 0.029). A total of 73% of patients reported a reduction in symptom severity or days of disease, and the mean global satisfaction was 7.52/10. Conclusions: MV140 demonstrated to be effective in the reduction rate of recurrent UTIs in a cohort of adult Portuguese patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research data management is essential for safeguarding and prospecting data generated in a scientific context. Specific issues arise regarding data in image format, as this data typology poses particular challenges and opportunities; however, not much attention has been given to data as images. We reviewed 109 articles from several research domains where images were used either as data or metadata to understand how researchers specifically deal with this data format, and what are your habits and behaviors. We use the Web of Science (WoS), considering its five main areas of research. We included in the initial corpus the most relevant articles by research domain, selecting the ten most cited articles in WoS, by year, between 2010 and 2021. The selected articles should be in English and in open access. The results found that images have been used in scientific works numerous times, but, unfortunately, few are those in which they are the central element of the study. Photography is the type of image most used in most domains. In terms of the instruments used, the Technology and Life Sciences and Biomedicine domains use the microscope more, while the Arts and Humanities and Physical Sciences domains use the camera more. We found that the images are mostly produced in the context of the project, rather than reused by third parties. As for their collection scenario, these are mostly produced/used in a laboratory context. The overwhelming majority of the images present in the articles are digital, and only a small part is analog. We verify that Arts and Humanities are more likely to perform qualitative types of analyses, while Life Sciences and Biomedicine overwhelmingly use quantitative analyses. As for the issues of sharing and depositing, Life Sciences and Biomedicine is the domain that stands out the most in the tasks of depositing and sharing images. It was found that the licenses of a project are intrinsically related to the motivations for sharing results with third parties. Description, a fundamental step in the data management process, is neglected by a large number of researchers. The images are mostly not described or annotated and when this happens, researchers don’t provide much detail about this.
