Abstract

IC 417 is in the Galactic Plane, and likely part of the Aur OB2 association; it is ~2 kpc away. Stock 8 is one of the densest cluster constituents; off of it to the East, there is a 'Nebulous Stream' (NS) that is dramatic in the infrared (IR). We have assembled a list of literature-identified young stellar objects (YSOs), new candidate YSOs from the NS, and new candidate YSOs from IR excesses. We vetted this list via inspection of the images, spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and color-color/color-magnitude diagrams. We placed the 710 surviving YSOs and candidate YSOs in ranked bins, nearly two-thirds of which have more than 20 points defining their SEDs. The lowest-ranked bins include stars that are confused, or likely carbon stars. There are 503 in the higher-ranked bins; half are SED Class III, and $\sim$40\% are SED Class II. Our results agree with the literature in that we find that the NS and Stock 8 are at about the same distance as each other (and as the rest of the YSOs), and that the NS is the youngest region, with Stock 8 a little older. We do not find any evidence for an age spread within the NS, consistent with the idea that the star formation trigger came from the north. We do not find that the other literature-identified clusters here are as young as either the NS or Stock 8; at best they are older than Stock 8, and they may not all be legitimate clusters., Comment: Accepted by AAS Journals

VCFs often result in debilitating back pain and decreased mobility. Cement augmentation, a minimally invasive surgical technique, is widely used to stabilize fractures and restore vertebral height. Acrylic-based cements and calcium phosphate cements are currently the two primary fill materials utilized for these procedures. Despite their effectiveness, acrylic bone cements and calcium phosphate cements have been associated with various intraoperative and postoperative incidents impacting VCF treatment. Over the past decade, discoveries in the field of biomedical engineering and material science have shown advancements toward addressing these limitations. Abstract

Cancer cells are a major source of enzymes that modify collagen to create a stiff, fibrotic tumor stroma. High collagen lysyl hydroxylase 2 (LH2) expression promotes metastasis and is correlated with shorter survival in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and other tumor types. LH2 hydroxylates lysine (Lys) residues on fibrillar collagens amino- and carboxy-terminal telopeptides to create stable collagen cross-links. Here, we show that electrostatic interactions between the LH domain active site and collagen determine the unique telopeptidyl lysyl hydroxylase (tLH) activity of LH2. However, CRISPR/Cas-9-mediated inactivation of tLH activity does not fully recapitulate the inhibitory effect of LH2 knock out on LUAD growth and metastasis in mice, suggesting that LH2 drives LUAD progression, in part, through a tLH-independent mechanism. Protein homology modeling and biochemical studies identify an LH2 isoform (LH2b) that has previously undetected collagen galactosylhydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase (GGT) activity determined by a loop that enhances UDP-glucose-binding in the GLT active site and is encoded by alternatively spliced exon 13 A. CRISPR/Cas-9-mediated deletion of exon 13 A sharply reduces the growth and metastasis of LH2b-expressing LUADs in mice. These findings identify a previously unrecognized collagen GGT activity that drives LUAD progression.

Abstract

ObjectivesEvaluate differences in weight change by regimen among people living with HIV (PLWH) initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the current era.MethodsBetween 2012 and 2019, 3232 ART-naïve PLWH initiated ≥3-drug ART regimens in 8 Centers for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems sites. We estimated weight change by regimen for 11 regimens in the immediate (first 6 months) and extended (all follow-up on initial regimen) periods using linear mixed models adjusted for time on regimen, interaction between time and regimen, age, sex, race/ethnicity, hepatitis B/C coinfection, nadir CD4, smoking, diabetes, antipsychotic medication, and site. We included more recently approved regimens [eg, with tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF)] only in the immediate period analyses to ensure comparable follow-up time.ResultsMean follow-up was 1.9 years on initial ART regimen. In comparison to efavirenz/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)/emtricitabine (FTC), initiating bictegravir/TAF/FTC {3.9 kg [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.2 to 5.5]} and dolutegravir/TAF/FTC [4.4 kg (95% CI: 2.1 to 6.6)] were associated with the greatest weight gain in the immediate period, followed by darunavir/TDF/FTC [3.7 kg (95% CI: 2.1 to 5.2)] and dolutegravir/TDF/FTC [2.6 kg (95% CI: 1.3 to 3.9)]. In the extended period, compared with efavirenz/TDF/FTC, initiating darunavir/TDF/FTC was associated with a 1.0 kg (95% CI: 0.5 to 1.5) per 6-months greater weight gain, whereas dolutegravir/abacavir/FTC was associated with a 0.6-kg (95% CI: 0.3 to 0.9) and dolutegravir/TDF/FTC was associated with a 0.6-kg (95% CI: 0.1 to 1.1) per 6-months greater gain. Weight gain on dolutegravir/abacavir/FTC and darunavir/TDF/FTC was significantly greater than that for several integrase inhibitor-based regimens.ConclusionsThere is heterogeneity between regimens in weight gain following ART initiation among previously ART-naïve PLWH; we observed greater gain among PLWH taking newer integrase strand transfer inhibitors (DTG, BIC) and DRV-based regimens.

Abstract

Heightened secretion of protumorigenic effector proteins is a feature of malignant cells. Yet, the molecular underpinnings and therapeutic implications of this feature remain unclear. Here, we identify a chromosome 1q region that is frequently amplified in diverse cancer types and encodes multiple regulators of secretory vesicle biogenesis and trafficking, including the Golgi-dedicated enzyme phosphatidylinositol (PI)-4-kinase IIIβ (PI4KIIIβ). Molecular, biochemical, and cell biological studies show that PI4KIIIβ-derived PI-4-phosphate (PI4P) synthesis enhances secretion and accelerates lung adenocarcinoma progression by activating Golgi phosphoprotein 3 (GOLPH3)-dependent vesicular release from the Golgi. PI4KIIIβ-dependent secreted factors maintain 1q-amplified cancer cell survival and influence prometastatic processes in the tumor microenvironment. Disruption of this functional circuitry in 1q-amplified cancer cells with selective PI4KIIIβ antagonists induces apoptosis and suppresses tumor growth and metastasis. These results support a model in which chromosome 1q amplifications create a dependency on PI4KIIIβ-dependent secretion for cancer cell survival and tumor progression.

Abstract

We use an alternative approach to show that quantum entanglement-like correlations cannot be reproduced for any classical protocol. In our proposal, quantum geometric restrictions are impose over the physical system related to the existence of entanglement and we demonstrate that there is no classical local strategy that can reproduce them completely. Typically, the implementations of Bell inequalities have as a starting point the expectation of classical behavior and as conclusion the violation due to the quantum character of the system. We go the other way around. For this purpose, we build a computational simulation based on the scheme of non-communicating students. In this scheme, the students cannot manipulate the quantum systems but they may set up in advance a common strategy and share some common classical data in order to try to reproduce the given quantum correlations of such systems. By thoroughly searching in the whole space of classical strategies we conclude that local operations and classical communications does not satisfy the geometrical constraints imposed by quantum entanglement.

In this work, we present a multiple-scale perturbation technique suitable for the study of open quantum systems, which is easy to implement and in few iterative steps allows us to find excellent approximate solutions. For any time-local quantum master equation, whether markovian or non-markovian, in Lindblad form or not, we give a general procedure to construct analytical approximations to the corresponding dynamical map and, consequently, to the temporal evolution of the density matrix. As a simple illustrative example of the implementation of the method, we study an atom-cavity system described by a dissipative Jaynes-Cummings model. Performing a multiple-scale analysis we obtain approximate analytical expressions for the strong and weak coupling regimes that allow us to identify characteristic time scales in the state of the physical system., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We describe studies on the nanoscale transport dynamics of carriers in strained AlN/GaN/AlN quantum wells: an electron-hole bilayer charge system with large difference in transport properties between the two charge layers. From electronic band diagram analysis, the presence of spatially separated two-dimensional electron and hole charge layers is predicted at opposite interfaces. Since these charge layers exhibit distinct spectral signatures at terahertz frequencies, a combination of terahertz and far-infrared spectroscopy enables us to extract (a) individual contributions to the total conductivity, as well as (b) effective scattering rates for charge-carriers in each layer. Furthermore, by comparing direct-current and terahertz extracted conductivity levels, we are able to determine the extent to which structural defects affect charge transport. Our results evidence that (i) a non-unity Hall-factor and (ii) the considerable contribution of holes to the overall conductivity, lead to a lower apparent mobility in Hall-effect measurements. Overall, our work demonstrates that terahertz spectroscopy is a suitable technique for the study of bilayer charge systems with large differences in transport properties between layers, such as quantum wells in III-Nitride semiconductors., Comment: Applied Physics Letters

Abstract

Non-small cell lung cancers that harbor concurrent KRAS and TP53 (KP) mutations are immunologically warm tumors with partial responsiveness to anti-PD-(L)1 blockade; however, most patients observe little or no durable clinical benefit. To identify novel tumor-driven resistance mechanisms, we developed a panel of KP murine lung cancer models with intrinsic resistance to anti-PD-1 and queried differential gene expression between these tumors and anti-PD-1-sensitive tumors. We found that the enzyme autotaxin (ATX), and the metabolite it produces, lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), were significantly upregulated in resistant tumors and that ATX directly modulated antitumor immunity, with its expression negatively correlating with total and effector tumor-infiltrating [CD8.sup.+] T cells. Pharmacological inhibition of ATX, or the downstream receptor LPAR5, in combination with anti-PD-1 was sufficient to restore the antitumor immune response and efficaciously control lung tumor growth in multiple KP tumor models. Additionally, ATX was significantly correlated with inflammatory gene signatures, including a [CD8.sup.+] cytolytic score in multiple lung adenocarcinoma patient data sets, suggesting that an activated tumor-immune microenvironment upregulates ATX and thus provides an opportunity for cotargeting to prevent acquired resistance to anti-PD-1 treatment. Abstract

Dipolaritons are quasiparticles that arise in coupled quantum wells embedded in a microcavity, they are a superposition of a photon, a direct exciton and an indirect exciton. We propose the existence of dipolaritons in a system of two coupled quantum dots inside a microcavity in direct analogy with the quantum well case and find that, despite some similarities, dipolaritons in quantum dots have different properties and can lead to true dark polariton states. We use a finite system theory to study the effects of the magnetic field on the system, including the emission, and find that it can be used as a control parameter of the properties of excitons and dipolaritons, and the overall magnetic behaviour of the structure., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are enabling breakthroughs in several areas, including quantum computing, neuromorphic processors, wearable devices, and more. Nevertheless, existing PIC measurement methods lack the spectral precision, speed, and sensitivity required for refining current applications and exploring new frontiers such as point-of-care or wearable biosensors. Here, the “sweeping optical frequency mixing method (SOHO)” is presented, surpassing traditional PIC measurement methods with real-time operation, 30 dB higher sensitivity, and over 100 times better spectral resolution. Leveraging the frequency mixing process with a sweeping laser, SOHO excels in simplicity, eliminating the need for advanced optical components and additional calibration procedures. Its superior performance is demonstrated on ultrahigh-quality factor (Q) fiber-loop resonators (Q = 46 × 106), as well as microresonators, realized on a new optical waveguide platform. An experimental spectral resolution of 19.1 femtometers is demonstrated using an 85-meter-long unbalanced fiber Mach Zehnder Interferometer, constrained by noise resulting from the extended fiber length, while the theoretical resolution is calculated to be 6.2 femtometers, limited by the linewidth of the reference laser. El sistema modelado es un micropilar semiconductor que contiene un \'unico punto cu\'antico en el interior de la microcavidad, este sistema presenta p\'erdida de fotones a trav\'es de los espejos de la cavidad y bombeo de excitones al punto cu\'antico. Obtenemos una ecuaci\'on maestra de campo medio no lineal que nos permite calcular el espectro de emisi\'on. In this work, we deduce a numerical expression to calculate the emission spectrum for a quantum dot-microcavity system, using a mean field theory in the density matrix formalism. The open system modeled, is a typical semiconductor micropillar that contains a single quantum dot inside a microcavity, this system presents leakage of photons through cavity mirrors and pumping of excitons to the quantum dot.
