1. Production of hypernuclei from antiproton capture within a relativistic transport model

Abstract

Production yields of single-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei from simulated peripheral annihilations of antiprotons after capture on various target nuclei are reported. The initial annihilation process and the production of excited hypernuclei are estimated within the GiBUU transport framework, while their deexcitation process is treated with the ABLA++ code. The yield of excited hypernuclei range from $\sim$ 0.3% for $^{16}$O to $\sim$ 1.2% for $^{132}$Xe per annihilation, consistent with previous measurements at LEAR, CERN. The yield of specific ground state hypernuclei after deexcitation reaches up to a few 10$^{-4}$ per annihilation. The hypernuclei are produced in strangeness exchange reactions occuring between a nucleon of the target and the kaons originating from the annihilation in $\sim$ 80% of the cases, while the strangeness pair production in secondary pion-nucleon collision contributes to the remaining $\sim$ 20%. The simulations indicate that antiproton annihilations at rest on different nuclei could populate a wide range of so-far unexplored hypernuclei.

Abstract

The accuracy and precision of high-energy spallation models are key issues for the design and development of new applications and experiments. We present a method to estimate model parameters and associated uncertainties by leveraging the Bayesian version of the Generalised Least Squares method, which enables us to incorporate prior knowledge on the parameter values. This approach is designed to adjust parameters based on experimental data, accounting for experimental uncertainty information, and providing uncertainties for all adjusted parameters. This approach is designed in order both to improve the accuracy of models through the modification of free parameters of these models, which results in a better reproduction of experimental data, and to estimate the uncertainties of these parameters and, by extension, their impacts on the model output. We aim at demonstrating the Generalised Least Square method can be applied in the case of Monte Carlo models. We present a proof-of-concept for Monte Carlo models in the specific case of nuclear physics with the model combination INCL/ABLA. We discuss the challenges in the application of this method to high-energy spallation models, notably the large runtime and the stochasticity of the models. Our results indicate this framework can also be applied to analogous situations where parameters of a computationally expensive Monte Carlo code should be inferred/improved.

Abstract

Present and next generation of long-baseline accelerator experiments are bringing the measurement of neutrino oscillations into the precision era with ever-increasing statistics. One of the most challenging aspects of achieving such measurements is developing relevant systematic uncertainties in the modeling of nuclear effects in neutrino-nucleus interactions. To address this problem, state-of-the-art detectors are being developed to extract detailed information about all particles produced in neutrino interactions. To fully profit from these experimental advancements, it is essential to have reliable models of propagation of the outgoing hadrons through nuclear matter able to predict how the energy is distributed between all the final-state observed particles. In this article, we investigate the role of nuclear de-excitation in neutrino-nucleus scattering using two Monte Carlo cascade models: NuWro and INCL coupled with the de-excitation code ABLA. The ablation model ABLA is used here for the first time to model de-excitation in neutrino interactions. As input to ABLA, we develop a consistent simulation of nuclear excitation energy tuned to electron-scattering data. The paper includes the characterization of the leading proton kinematics and of the nuclear cluster production during cascade and de-excitation. Abstract

We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section 16O(α,γ)12C, which is the time reversed reaction to 12C(α,γ)16O. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the R3B setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity 16O beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted 16O ions pass, while detecting the 12C and 4He.

Abstract

[Abstract] Despite the recent experimental and theoretical progress in the investigation of the nuclear fission process, a complete description still represents a challenge in nuclear physics because it involves the coupling between intrinsic and collective degrees of freedom as well as different quantummechanical phenomena. In the last decade, unprecedented fission experiments have been carried out within the Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams (R3B) Collaboration at the GSI facility by using the inverse kinematics technique in combination with state-of-the-art detectors especially designed to measure the fission products with high detection efficiency and acceptance.

Abstract

19 pags., 16 figs., 8 tabs., We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R3B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σΔE/ ΔE of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Together with an elaborate particle-tracking system, the full identification of relativistic ions from hydrogen up to uranium in mass and nuclear charge is possible., This work received support from BMBF (05P19RFFN1, 05P15RDFN1, 05P19RDFN1) and HIC for FAIR. Abstract

B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is a hematological malignancy characterized by the accumulation of mature CD5 + B lymphocytes with a defective apoptosis. A subset of blood monocyte-derived adherent cells generated in vitro protects B-CLL cells from apoptosis playing a role as nurse-like cells (NLCs). Fludarabine (9-β- D -arabinofuranosyl-2-fluoroadenine; F-ara-A) is an adenine nucleoside analog used to treat B-CLL. To gain insight into the mechanisms implicated in the antitumoral effect of fludarabine in B-CLL cells, we performed cross-cultures with B-CLL cells and NLCs treated and untreated with fludarabine. Our results showed that fludarabine blocked the development of NLCs and induced apoptosis in these cells when they were present in culture. Moreover, CD19 + /CD5 + B-CLL cells treated with fludarabine underwent apoptosis and this event was not related with the presence of NLCs whether treated or not with fludarabine. In conclusion, apoptosis induced by fludarabine in CD19 + /CD5 + B-CLL cells was due to a direct effect on these cells and not due to its effect in the NLCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

31. HK-ATPase Expression in the Susceptible BALB/c and the Resistant DBA/2 Strains of Mice to Autoimmune Gastritis.

Abstract

Neonatal thymectomy (NTx) in mice induces a group of alterations in the immune system homeostasis that results in the development of a variety of organ-specific autoimmune diseases such as gastritis, thyroiditis, oophoritis and orchitis. Given the importance of self-antigen expression in thymus for the control of autoreactive cells and generation of regulatory cells, we have compared the expression of parietal cell antigen in two strains of mice with the same H-2: BALB/c (susceptible to develop gastritis after NTx) and DBA/2 (resistant). We detected mRNA of HK-ATPase α and β chains in day 1 thymi of both strains. Fifty percent of BALB/c mice presented mRNA levels similar to DBA/2. However, lower mRNA levels were found in the remaining BALB/c mice that may correspond to those that would develop AIG after NTx. Since the presence of the antigen in periphery is also necessary for the induction of regulatory cells, we have compared both strains observing in day 1 stomachs from resistant DBA/2 strain, a significantly higher content of positive cells for HK-ATPase subunits than stomachs from susceptible BALB/c strain. Also, the presence of antinuclear Abs in NTx BALB/c mice makes this model a useful experimental system for analyzing the responsible mechanisms breaking the non-specific self-tolerance.
