Abstract

With the decreasing cost of consumer display technologies making it easier for universities to have larger displays in classrooms, and the ubiquitous use of online tools such as collaborative whiteboards for remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, combining the two can be useful in higher education. This is especially true in visually intensive classes, such as data visualization courses, that can benefit from additional "space to teach," coined after the "space to think" sense-making idiom. In this paper, we reflect on our approach to using SAGE3, a collaborative whiteboard with advanced features, in higher education to teach visually intensive classes, provide examples of activities from our own visually-intensive courses, and present student feedback. 13. Grover's Algorithm with Diffusion and Amplitude Steering

Abstract

We review the basic theoretical underpinnings of the Grover algorithm, providing a rigorous and well motivated derivation. We then present a generalization of Grover's algorithm that searches an arbitrary subspace of the multi-dimensional Hilbert space using a diffusion operation and an amplitude amplification procedure that has been biased by unitary {\em steering operators}. We also outline a generalized Grover's algorithm that takes into account higher level correlations that could exist between database elements. In the traditional Grover algorithm, the Hadamard gate selects a uniform sample of computational basis elements when performing the phase selection and diffusion. In contrast, steered operators bias the selection process, thereby providing more flexibility in selecting the target state. Abstract

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to search for genes/variants that modify the effect of LRRK2 mutations in terms of penetrance and age-at-onset of Parkinson's disease.MethodsWe performed the first genomewide association study of penetrance and age-at-onset of Parkinson's disease in LRRK2 mutation carriers (776 cases and 1,103 non-cases at their last evaluation). Cox proportional hazard models and linear mixed models were used to identify modifiers of penetrance and age-at-onset of LRRK2 mutations, respectively. We also investigated whether a polygenic risk score derived from a published genomewide association study of Parkinson's disease was able to explain variability in penetrance and age-at-onset in LRRK2 mutation carriers.ResultsA variant located in the intronic region of CORO1C on chromosome 12 (rs77395454; p value = 2.5E-08, beta = 1.27, SE = 0.23, risk allele: C) met genomewide significance for the penetrance model. Co-immunoprecipitation analyses of LRRK2 and CORO1C supported an interaction between these 2 proteins. A region on chromosome 3, within a previously reported linkage peak for Parkinson's disease susceptibility, showed suggestive associations in both models (penetrance top variant: p value = 1.1E-07; age-at-onset top variant: p value = 9.3E-07). A polygenic risk score derived from publicly available Parkinson's disease summary statistics was a significant predictor of penetrance, but not of age-at-onset.InterpretationThis study suggests that variants within or near CORO1C may modify the penetrance of LRRK2 mutations. In addition, common Parkinson's disease associated variants collectively increase the penetrance of LRRK2 mutations. ANN NEUROL 2021;90:82-94.

43. Floating-Point Calculations on a Quantum Annealer: Division and Matrix Inversion

Abstract

Systems of linear equations are employed almost universally across a wide range of disciplines, from physics and engineering to biology, chemistry and statistics. Traditional solution methods such as Gaussian elimination become very time consuming for large matrices, and more efficient computational methods are desired. In the twilight of Moore's Law, quantum computing is perhaps the most direct path out of the darkness. There are two complementary paradigms for quantum computing, namely, gated systems and quantum annealers. In this paper, we express floating point operations such as division and matrix inversion in terms of a quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problem, a formulation that is ideal for a quantum annealer. We first address floating point division, and then move on to matrix inversion. We provide a general algorithm for any number of dimensions, but we provide results from the D-Wave quantum anneler for $2\times 2$ and $3 \times 3$ general matrices. Our algorithm scales to very large numbers of linear equations. We should also mention that our algorithm provides the full solution the the matrix problem, while HHL provides only an expectation value., Comment: 36 pages, 18 figures
