Background: Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) has been associated with longevity and protection against cardiometabolic diseases, but little is known about how it influences human vascular function. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of SIRT1 activation by resveratrol and energy restriction on vascular reactivity in adults. Methods: A randomized trial allocated 48 healthy adults (24 women and 24 men), aged 55 to 65 years, to resveratrol supplementation or energy restriction for 30 days. Blood lipids, glucose, insulin, C-reactive protein, noradrenaline, SIRT1 (circulating and gene expression), and flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) and nitrate-mediated vasodilation (NMD) were measured. Results: Both interventions increased circulating SIRT1 (p < 0.001). Pre- and post-tests changes of plasma noradrenaline were significant for both groups (resveratrol: p = 0.037; energy restriction: p = 0.008). Baseline circulating SIRT1 was inversely correlated with noradrenaline (r = −0.508; p < 0.01), and post-treatment circulating SIRT1 was correlated with NMD (r = 0.433; p < 0.01). Circulating SIRT1 was a predictor of FMD in men (p = 0.045), but not in women. SIRT1 was an independent predictor of NMD (p = 0.026) only in the energy restriction group. Conclusions: Energy restriction and resveratrol increased circulating SIRT1 and reduced sympathetic activity similarly in healthy adults. SIRT1 was independently associated with NMD only in the energy restriction group.

Os efeitos da interação entre aerossóis e nuvens foram estudados neste trabalho através da análise das propriedades ópticas de nuvens em função da profundidade óptica do aerossol (AOD). A região de trabalho foi a Amazônia, particularmente durante a estação seca e na transição entre a estação seca e a chuvosa, quando as queimadas lançam grande quantidade de partículas na atmosfera. Foram utilizados produtos derivados do MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), sendo dois artigos utilizados como referência (Yu et al., 2007 e Koren et al., 2008). Observou-se comportamento de correlação entre fração de cobertura de nuvens e AOD conforme previsto em Koren et al. (2008) para outros anos estudados (2002 a 2008), nas estações seca e de transição entre seca e úmida, e em seis áreas menores de estudo de diferentes regiões da Amazônia, utilizando resultados das passagens da manhã (satélite Terra) e da tarde (satélite Aqua). Essas análises também foram realizadas restringindo-se os dados a situações atmosféricas semelhantes, conforme conteúdo de vapor dágua e instabilidade atmosférica, sendo observado o efeito microfísico através de médias, mas o radiativo não foi observado. The effects of the interaction between aerosols and clouds are studied in this work by analyzing the optical properties of clouds as a function of the aerosol optical depth (AOD). The studied area is the Amazon region, particularly during the dry season and the transition between the dry to wet season, when fires release large amounts of particles in the atmosphere. MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) products are used and two papers are used as reference (Yu et al., 2007 and Koren et al., 2008). As observed by Koren et al. (2008), correlation between cloud cover fraction and AOD was observed in this study, for a larger database, including years 2002 to 2008, both during the dry seasons and the transition between dry to wet. Six smaller areas in the Amazon were also investigated, using results from morning (Terra satellite) and afternoon (Aqua satellite) overpasses. These tests were also conducted by restricting the data according to atmospheric conditions such as water vapor content intervals and atmospheric instability. In this case, only the microphysical effect was observed, but not the radiative.

This document presents a brief overview of the Sferics Timing and And Ranging NETwork (STARNET) measurements over South America in the last 9 years. Since its beginning, STARNET measured more than 610 millions of sferics in the entire South America. The main hot spots are found over Maracaibo - Venezuela, northern Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Corumba and Amazon basin in Brazil. The detection efficiency and location accuracy is highly dependent on the number of sensors available in the network that it is currently operating 11 VLF antennas.

As plantas foram pulverizadas duas vezes por semana. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado, com 4 repetições, e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. O índice de infecção das folhas foi determinado por escala diagramática além do peso e diâmetro das raízes. Os resultados de inibição do crescimento micelial para as doses do óleo foram 0; 56; 87; 83 e 99%, e os índices de infecção: 77,08; 35,62; 21,04; 19,37 e 20,00%, respectivamente, para a testemunha e as doses 0,13; 0,67; 0,80 e 1,00% do óleo. Somente na concentração de 0,80% o óleo proporcionou relação positiva entre o ganho de peso e o diâmetro das raízes. O óleo de Melaleuca foi eficaz no controle de C. beticola e, como consequência, houve produção de raízes de beterraba com melhor desenvolvimento. ABSTRACT The volatile oil from Melaleuca (Melaleuca alternifolia Maiden & Betche Cheel.) has antimicrobial properties and can promote several effects on plant cultivation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibition of the oil in Cercospora beticola Sacc. and if it favors the growth and development of beet root. The doses were 0.13, 0.67, 0.8 and 1% of oil, besides the control PDA (potato-dextrose-agar) in vitro (laboratory condition) and with water as treatment control in vivo (field conditions). The plants were sprayed twice a week. The treatments were completely randomized and the averages were compared using the Tukey test at 5%. The infection rate of leaves was measured by diagrammatic scale besides the weight and diameter of tubers. The inhibition results of the radial growth by oil treatments were 0; 56, 87, 83 and 99%, while the infection rate showed: 77.08, 35.62, 21.04, 19.37 and 20% respectively to the control and to the oil concentration of 0,13; 0,67; 0,80 e 1,00%. Only at concentration of 0.8% the tea tree oil showed a positive relationship between tuber´s weight and tuber´s diameter gains. It can be concluded that tea tree oil is effective to controlling C. beticola, and also promotes an increase on development in beet tubers. Introdução: Aneurisma de aorta é considerado uma doença inflamatória crônica, mas ainda é controverso se está relacionado a aterosclerose aos agentes infecciosos. Antígenos de Chlamydophila pneumoniae (CP) e Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) foram encontrados em grande quantidade nas placas instáveis que usualmente estão associadas a remodelamento positivo e inflamação do vaso. Metaloproteinase da matriz 9 (MMP-9) está implicada na fragilidade da parede vascular e na formação dos aneurismas. Os efeitos imunomodulatórios dos receptores ativados por proliferador de peroxissomo (PPARs) têm sido relacionados à aterosclerose. Objetivos: Comparar lesões ateroscleróticas graves com e sem aneurisma do ponto de vista inflamatório e infeccioso, analisando antígenos de MP e CP e expressão de MMP-9, TIMP-1 e PPARs. Métodos: No presente estudo quantificamos, através da técnica de imunoistoquímica, antígenos de MMP- 9, TIMP-1, PPARs a e , e dos agentes infecciosos CP e MP em fragmentos de aorta ateroscleróticos com aneurisma (n=14) e sem aneurisma (n=14). Resultados: A adventícia e o tecido adiposo periadventicial (TAP) dos aneurismas apresentaram intensa inflamação. Expressão de MMP-9 esteve aumentada no TAP e agentes infecciosos, TIMP-1 e PPAR a estiveram aumentados na adventícia e no TAP, sem diferença em relação a expressão de PPAR . Colágeno, TIMP-1 e PPARs estiveram positivamente correlacionados no grupo com aterosclerose, mas não no grupo com aneurisma. Conclusão: Nossos achados sugerem que aneurisma de aorta é uma complicação das lesões ateroscleróticas. Quantidade aumentada de Chlamydophila pneumoniae e Mycoplasma pneumoniae na adventícia e PAT sem correlação da resposta de TIMP-1 e PPARs são achados que estão associados com a presença de aneurisma nos segmentos de aorta ateroscleróticos Introduction: Aortic aneurysm is considered a chronic inflammatory disease, but remains a controversial matter if it is related to atherosclerosis and infectious agents. Chlamydophila pneumoniae (CP) and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) antigens were found in higher amount in unstable plaques that are usually associated to positive remodeling and vessel inflammation. Matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) has been implicated in vascular wall fragility and aneurysm development. The immunemodulator effects of peroxisome proliferators - activated receptor (PPARs) have been related to atherosclerosis. Objectives: To compare severe atherosclerotic lesions with and without aneurysms by inflammatory and infectious point of view, analyzing MP and CP, MMP-9, TIMP-1 and PPARs antigens. Methods: In the present study we quantified, using immunohistochemistry technique, MMP-9, TIMP-1, PPAR a and and infectious agents CP and MP antigens in aortic atherosclerotic fragments with aneurysms. (n=14) and without aneurysms (n=14). Results: Adventitia and periadventitial adipose tissue (PAT) from aneurysms showed intense inflammation. MMP-9 expression has increased in PAT and the infectious agents, TIMP-1 and PPAR a were increased in adventitia and PAT in aneurysmatic group, without difference related to PPAR expression. Collagen, TIMP-1 and PPARs were positively correlated in atherosclerotic group, but it was not observed in aneurysmatic group. Conclusion: Our data have suggested that aortic aneurysm is a complication of aortic atherosclerotic lesions. Increased amount of Chlamydophila pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae in the adventitia and PAT without a correlated TIMP-1 and PPARs response are findings that were associated with the presence of aneurysm in atherosclerotic aortic segments

A simple method for interferometric measurements of chromatic and polarization mode dispersion os single mode fibres and devices is presented. Accuracy of the method and resolution limits are discussed.
