1. NeFF-BioNet: Crop Biomass Prediction from Point Cloud to Drone Imagery

Abstract: Crop biomass offers crucial insights into plant health and yield, making it essential for crop science, farming systems, and agricultural research. However, current measurement methods, which are labor-intensive, destructive, and imprecise, hinder large-scale quantification of this trait. To address this limitation, we present a biomass prediction network (BioNet), designed for adaptation across different data modalities, including point clouds and drone imagery. Our BioNet, utilizing a sparse 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) and a transformer-based prediction module, processes point clouds and other 3D data representations to predict biomass. To further extend BioNet for drone imagery, we integrate a neural feature field (NeFF) module, enabling 3D structure reconstruction and the transformation of 2D semantic features from vision foundation models into the corresponding 3D surfaces. For the point cloud modality, BioNet demonstrates superior performance on two public datasets, with an approximate 6.1% relative improvement (RI) over the state-of-the-art. In the RGB image modality, the combination of BioNet and NeFF achieves a 7.9% RI. Additionally, the NeFF-based approach utilizes inexpensive, portable drone-mounted cameras, providing a scalable solution for large field applications.

2. Modelling vehicle and pedestrian collective dynamics: Challenges and advancements

Abstract: In our urbanised societies, the management and regulation of traffic and pedestrian flows is of considerable interest for public safety, economic development, and the conservation of the environment. However, modelling and controlling the collective dynamics of vehicles and pedestrians raises several challenges. Not only are the individual entities self-propelled and hard to describe, but their complex nonlinear physical and social interactions makes the multi-agent problem of crowd and traffic flow even more involved. In this chapter, we purport to review the suitability and limitations of classical modelling approaches through four examples of collective behaviour: stop-and-go waves in traffic flow, lane formation, long-term avoidance behaviour, and load balancing in pedestrian dynamics. While stop-and-go dynamics and lane formation can both be addressed by basic reactive models (at least to some extent), the latter two require anticipation and/or coordination at the level of the group. The results highlight the limitations of classical force-based models, but also the need for long-term anticipation mechanisms and multiscale modelling approaches. Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. 4. Dual wavelength brillouin laser terahertz source stabilized to carbonyl sulfide rotational transition

Abstract: Optical-based terahertz sources are important for many burgeoning scientific and technological applications. Among such applications is precision spectroscopy of molecules, which exhibit rotational transitions at terahertz frequencies. Stemming from precision spectroscopy is frequency discrimination and stabilization of terahertz sources. Because many molecular species exist in the gas phase at room temperature, their transitions are prime candidates for practical terahertz frequency references. We demonstrate the stabilization of a low phase-noise, dual-wavelength Brillouin laser (DWBL) terahertz oscillator to a rotational transition of carbonyl sulfide (\ce{OCS}). We achieve an instability of $1.2\times10^{-12}/\sqrt{\tau}$, where $\tau$ is the averaging time in seconds. The signal-to-noise ratio and intermodulation limitations of the experiment are also discussed. We thus demonstrate a highly stable and spectrally pure terahertz frequency source. Our presented architecture will likely benefit metrology, spectroscopy, precision terahertz studies, and beyond.

5. Chaining Multiplications in Finite Fields with Chudnovsky-type Algorithms and Tensor Rank of the k-multiplication

Abstract: We design a class of Chudnovsky-type algorithms multiplying k elements of a finite extension of order n a finite field K. We prove that these algorithms give a tensor decomposition of the k-multiplication for which the rank is linear in n uniformly in $q$. We give uniform upper bounds of the rank of k-multiplication in finite fields. They use interpolation on algebraic curves which transforms the problem in computing the Hadamard product of $k$ vectors with components in K. This generalization of the widely studied case of $k=2$ is based on a modification of the Riemann-Roch spaces involved and the use of towers of function fields having a lot of places of high degree.

Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. 7. Torsion at the Threshold for Mapping Class Groups

Abstract: The mapping class group ${\Gamma}_g^ 1$ of a closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 1$ with one marked point can be identified, by the Nielsen action, with a subgroup of the group of orientation preserving homeomorphims of the circle. This inclusion pulls back the powers of the discrete universal Euler class producing classes $\text{E}^n \in H^{2n}({\Gamma}_g^1;\mathbb{Z})$ for all $n\geq 1$. In this paper we study the power $n=g,$ and prove: $\text{E}^g$ is a torsion class which generates a cyclic subgroup of $H^{2g}({\Gamma}_g^1;\mathbb{Z})$ whose order is a positive integer multiple of $4g(2g+1)(2g-1)$., Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures. Abstract: We present Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM 2), a foundation model towards solving promptable visual segmentation in images and videos. We build a data engine, which improves model and data via user interaction, to collect the largest video segmentation dataset to date. Our model is a simple transformer architecture with streaming memory for real-time video processing. SAM 2 trained on our data provides strong performance across a wide range of tasks. In video segmentation, we observe better accuracy, using 3x fewer interactions than prior approaches. In image segmentation, our model is more accurate and 6x faster than the Segment Anything Model (SAM). We believe that our data, model, and insights will serve as a significant milestone for video segmentation and related perception tasks. 10. Eliminating Bias in Pedestrian Density Estimation: A Voronoi Cell Perspective

Abstract: For pedestrians moving without spatial constraints, extensive research has been devoted to develop methods of density estimation. In this paper we present a new approach based on Voronoi cells, offering a means to estimate density for individuals in small, unbounded pedestrian groups. A thorough evaluation of existing methods, encompassing both Lagrangian and Eulerian approaches employed in similar contexts, reveals notable limitations. Specifically, these methods turn out to be ill-defined for realistic density estimation along a pedestrian's trajectory, exhibiting systematic biases and fluctuations that depend on the choice of parameters. There is thus a need for a parameter-independent method to eliminate this bias. We propose a modification of the widely used Voronoi-cell based density estimate to accommodate pedestrian groups, irrespective of their size. The advantages of this modified Voronoi method are that it is an instantaneous method that requires only knowledge of the pedestrians' positions at a give time, does not depend on the choice of parameter values, gives us a realistic estimate of density in an individual's neighborhood, and has appropriate physical meaning for both small and large human crowds in a wide variety of situations. Abstract: We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

12. Diff-MST: Differentiable Mixing Style Transfer

Abstract: Mixing style transfer automates the generation of a multitrack mix for a given set of tracks by inferring production attributes from a reference song. However, existing systems for mixing style transfer are limited in that they often operate only on a fixed number of tracks, introduce artifacts, and produce mixes in an end-to-end fashion, without grounding in traditional audio effects, prohibiting interpretability and controllability. To overcome these challenges, we introduce Diff-MST, a framework comprising a differentiable mixing console, a transformer controller, and an audio production style loss function. By inputting raw tracks and a reference song, our model estimates control parameters for audio effects within a differentiable mixing console, producing high-quality mixes and enabling post-hoc adjustments. Moreover, our architecture supports an arbitrary number of input tracks without source labelling, enabling real-world applications. 13. Difference Autocorrelation: A Novel Approach to Estimate Shear Wave Speed in the Presence of Compression Waves

Abstract: In share wave elastography (SWE), the aim is to measure the velocity of shear waves, however unwanted compression waves and bulk tissue motion pose challenges in evaluating tissue stiffness. Conventional approaches often struggle to discriminate between shear and compression waves, leading to inaccurate shear wave speed (SWS) estimation. In this study, we propose a novel approach known as the difference autocorrelation estimator to accurately estimate reverberant SWS in the presence of compression waves and noise. Methods: The difference autocorrelation estimator, unlike conventional techniques, computes the subtraction of velocity between neighboring particles, effectively minimizing the impact of long wavelength compression waves and other wide-area movements such as those caused by respiration. We evaluated the effectiveness of the integrated difference autocorrelation (IDA) by: (1) using k-Wave simulations of a branching cylinder in a soft background, (2) using ultrasound elastography on a breast phantom, (3) using ultrasound elastography in the human liver-kidney region, and (4) using magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) on a brain phantom. Results: By applying IDA on the unfiltered contaminated wave fields of simulation and elastography experiments, the estimated SWSs are in good agreement with the ground truth values (i.e., less than 2% error for the simulation, 9% error for ultrasound elastography of breast phantom and 19% error for MRE). Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that IDA accurately estimates SWS, revealing the existence of a lesion, even in the presence of strong compression waves. Significance: IDA exhibits consistency in SWS estimation across different modalities and excitation scenarios, highlighting its robustness and potential clinical utility.

14. Economical representation of spatial networks

Abstract: Network visualization is essential for many scientific, societal, technological and artistic domains. The primary goal is to highlight patterns out of nodes interconnected by edges that are easy to understand, facilitate communication and support decision-making. This is typically achieved by rearranging the nodes to minimize the edge crossings responsible of unintelligible and often unaesthetic trends. But when the nodes cannot be moved, as in spatial and physical networks, this procedure is not viable. Here, we overcome this situation by turning the edge crossing problem into a graph filtering optimization. We demonstrate that the presence of longer connections prompt the optimal solution to yield sparser networks, thereby limiting the number of intersections and getting more readable layouts. 16. Roots in the semiring of finite deterministic dynamical systems

Abstract: Finite discrete-time dynamical systems (FDDS) model phenomena that evolve deterministically in discrete time. It is possible to define sum and product operations on these systems (disjoint union and direct product, respectively) giving a commutative semiring. This algebraic structure led to several works employing polynomial equations to model hypotheses on phenomena modelled using FDDS. To solve these equations, algorithms for performing the division and computing $k$-th roots are needed. In this paper, we propose two polynomial algorithms for these tasks, under the condition that the result is a connected FDDS. This ultimately leads to an efficient solution to equations of the type $AX^k=B$ for connected $X$. These results are some of the important final steps for solving more general polynomial equations on FDDS.

Abstract: A system was recently implemented in the Virgo detector to cancel noise in its data produced by seismic waves directly coupling with the suspended test masses through gravitational interaction. The data from seismometers are being filtered to produce a coherent estimate of the associated gravitational noise also known as Newtonian noise. The first implementation of the system uses a time-invariant (static) Wiener filter, which is the optimal filter for Newtonian-noise cancellation assuming that the noise is stationary. However, time variations in the form of transients and slow changes in correlations between sensors are possible and while time-variant filters are expected to cope with these variations better than a static Wiener filter, the question is what the limitations are of time-variant noise cancellation. In this study, we present a framework to study the performance limitations of time-variant noise cancellation filters and carry out a proof-of-concept with adaptive filters on seismic data at the Virgo site. We demonstrate that the adaptive filters, at least those with superior architecture, indeed significantly outperform the static Wiener filter with the residual noise remaining above the statistical error bound.

18. MMCBE: Multi-modality Dataset for Crop Biomass Prediction and Beyond

Abstract: Crop biomass, a critical indicator of plant growth, health, and productivity, is invaluable for crop breeding programs and agronomic research. However, the accurate and scalable quantification of crop biomass remains inaccessible due to limitations in existing measurement methods. One of the obstacles impeding the advancement of current crop biomass prediction methodologies is the scarcity of publicly available datasets. Addressing this gap, we introduce a new dataset in this domain, i.e. Multi-modality dataset for crop biomass estimation (MMCBE). Comprising 216 sets of multi-view drone images, coupled with LiDAR point clouds, and hand-labelled ground truth, MMCBE represents the first multi-modality one in the field. This dataset aims to establish benchmark methods for crop biomass quantification and foster the development of vision-based approaches. We have rigorously evaluated state-of-the-art crop biomass estimation methods using MMCBE and ventured into additional potential applications, such as 3D crop reconstruction from drone imagery and novel-view rendering. Abstract: We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. The discovery of this system implies an increase in the expected rate of neutron star-black hole mergers with electromagnetic counterparts and provides further evidence for compact objects existing within the purported lower mass gap., Comment: 45 pages (10 pages author list, 13 pages main text, 1 page acknowledgements, 13 pages appendices, 8 pages bibliography), 17 figures, 16 tables. 20. Symmetry groups of hyperbolic links and their complements

Abstract: We explicitly construct a sequence of hyperbolic links $\{ L_{4n} \}$ where the number of symmetries of each $\mathbb{S}^{3} \setminus L_{4n}$ that are not induced by symmetries of the pair $(\mathbb{S}^{3}, L_{4n})$ grows linearly with n. Specifically, $[Sym(\mathbb{S}^{3} \setminus L_{4n}) : Sym(\mathbb{S}^{3}, L_{4n})] =8n \rightarrow \infty$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. For this construction, we start with a family of minimally twisted chain links, $\{ C_{4n} \}$, where $Sym(\mathbb{S}^{3}, C_{4n})$ and $Sym(\mathbb{S}^{3} \setminus C_{4n})$ coincide and grow linearly with $n$. We then perform a particular type of homeomorphism on $\mathbb{S}^{3} \setminus C_{4n}$ to produce another link complement $\mathbb{S}^{3} \setminus L_{4n}$ where we can uniformly bound $|Sym(\mathbb{S}^{3}, L_{4n})|$ using a combinatorial condition based on linking number. Abstract: Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Understanding and modeling pedestrian dynamics in dense crowds is a complex yet essential aspect of crowd management and urban planning. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of a dense crowd crossed by a cylindrical intruder using a Mean-Field Game (MFG) model. By incorporating a discount factor to account for pedestrians' limited anticipation and information processing, we examine the model's ability to simulate two distinct experimental configurations: pedestrians facing the obstacle and pedestrians giving their back to the intruder. 30. On the validity of fMRI studies with subject-level data processed through different pipelines

Abstract: In recent years, the lack of reproducibility of research findings has become an important source of concerns in many scientific fields, including functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). The low statistical power often observed in fMRI studies was identified as one of the leading causes of irreproducibility. The development of data sharing opens up new opportunities to achieve larger sample sizes by reusing existing data. FMRI studies proceed by first preparing subject-level data using a given analysis pipeline and then combining those into a group analysis. Historically the subject-level analysis pipeline was identical for all subjects. As practices evolve towards more data reuse, researchers might want to directly combine subject-level data thata were processed using different pipelines. Here, we investigate the impact of combining subject-level data processed with different pipelines in between-group fMRI studies. We used the HCP Young-Adult dataset (N=1,080 participants) processed with 24 different pipelines. We then performed between-group analyses comparing subject data processed with different pipelines. We worked under the null hypothesis of no differences between subjects and compared the estimated false-positive rates obtained with the nominal rates. We showed that the analytical variability induced by the parameters explored in this dataset increases the false positive rates of studies combining data from different pipelines. We conclude that different processed subject data cannot be combined without taking into account the processing applied on these data.

31. Angular Integral Autocorrelation for Speed Estimation in Shear Wave Elastography

Abstract: The utilization of a reverberant shear wave field in shear wave elastography has emerged as a promising technique for achieving robust shear wave speed (SWS) estimation. However, accurately measuring SWS within such a complex wave field remains challenging. This study introduces an advanced autocorrelation estimator based on angular integration known as the angular integral autocorrelation (AIA) approach to address this issue. The AIA approach incorporates all the au-tocorrelation data from various angles during measurements, resulting in enhanced robustness to both noise and imperfect distributions in SWS estimation. The effectiveness of the AIA estimator for SWS estimation is first validated using a k-Wave simulation of a stiff branching tube in a uniform background. Furthermore, the AIA estimator is applied to ultrasound elastography experiments, MRI experiments, and OCT studies across a range of different excitation frequencies on tissues and phantoms, including in vivo scans. The results verify the capacity of the AIA approach to enhance the accuracy of SWS estimation and SNR, even within an imperfect reverberant shear wave field. Compared to simple autocorrelation approaches, the AIA approach can also successfully visualize and define lesions while significantly improving the estimated SWS and SNR in homogeneous background materials, thus providing improved elastic contrast between structures within the scans. These findings demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the AIA approach across a wide range of applications, including ultrasound elastography, MRE, and OCE, for accurately identifying the elastic properties of biological tissues in diverse excitation scenarios.

32. Does rare, noise-induced, bypass transition in plane Couette flow bypass instantons ?

Abstract: We study rare noise induced paths that go all the way from stable laminar to transitional turbulent plane Couette flow and investigate whether these paths share the properties of classical noise induced transitions. The rare paths from laminar to turbulent flow are computed using Adaptive Multilevel Splitting, a rare event simulation method, and are validated against Direct Numerical Simulations at moderately small energy injection rate. The flow is forced outside its natural scales and redistribute energy to the unforced large scales so that the reactive trajectories display forced streamwise velocity tubes at the natural scale of velocity streaks. As the trajectory proceeds, these tubes gradually grow in amplitude until they cross the separatrix between laminar and turbulent flow. Streamwise vortices are visible after velocity tubes have reached near turbulent amplitude. As the domain size is increased from Lx * Lz=6 *4 to 36*24, spatial localisation then extension of the generated coherent streaks and vortices in the spanwise direction is observed. The paths computed in MFU display many of the characteristics of instantons, that often structure noise induced transitions: concentration of trajectories, exponentially increasing waiting times before transition, and Gumbel distribution of trajectory durations. However, bisections started on the reactive trajectories indicate that the trajectory lack two key ingredients of instantons. They do not visit the neighbourhood of the nearest saddle point and do not display the natural relaxation path from that saddle to transitional wall turbulence. The reactive paths do not concentrate more and more around the same trajectory as energy injection rate is decreased, but instead gradually move in phase space. They might reconnect with instantons at very small energy injection rate and exceedingly long waiting times., Comment: 46 pages and 18 figures

Abstract: BackgroundPreterm birth is the leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years worldwide. WHO recommends kangaroo mother care (KMC); however, its effects on mortality in sub-Saharan Africa and its relative costs remain unclear. We aimed to compare the effectiveness, safety, costs, and cost-effectiveness of KMC initiated before clinical stabilisation versus standard care in neonates weighing up to 2000 g.MethodsWe conducted a parallel-group, individually randomised controlled trial in five hospitals across Uganda. Singleton or twin neonates aged younger than 48 h weighing 700-2000 g without life-threatening clinical instability were eligible for inclusion. We randomly assigned (1:1) neonates to either KMC initiated before stabilisation (intervention group) or standard care (control group) via a computer-generated random allocation sequence with permuted blocks of varying sizes, stratified by birthweight and recruitment site. Parents, caregivers, and health-care workers were unmasked to treatment allocation; however, the independent statistician who conducted the analyses was masked. After randomisation, neonates in the intervention group were placed prone and skin-to-skin on the caregiver's chest, secured with a KMC wrap. Neonates in the control group were cared for in an incubator or radiant heater, as per hospital practice; KMC was not initiated until stability criteria were met. The primary outcome was all-cause neonatal mortality at 7 days, analysed by intention to treat. The economic evaluation assessed incremental costs and cost-effectiveness from a disaggregated societal perspective. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02811432.FindingsBetween Oct 9, 2019, and July 31, 2022, 2221 neonates were randomly assigned: 1110 (50·0%) neonates to the intervention group and 1111 (50·0%) neonates to the control group. From randomisation to age 7 days, 81 (7·5%) of 1083 neonates in the intervention group and 83 (7·5%) of 1102 neonates in the control group died (adjusted relative risk [RR] 0·97 [95% CI 0·74-1·28]; p=0·85). From randomisation to 28 days, 119 (11·3%) of 1051 neonates in the intervention group and 134 (12·8%) of 1049 neonates in the control group died (RR 0·88 [0·71-1·09]; p=0·23). Even if policy makers place no value on averting neonatal deaths, the intervention would have 97% probability from the provider perspective and 84% probability from the societal perspective of being more cost-effective than standard care.InterpretationKMC initiated before stabilisation did not reduce early neonatal mortality; however, it was cost-effective from the societal and provider perspectives compared with standard care. Abstract: Ecological and evolutionary theories have proposed that species traits should be important in mediating species responses to contemporary climate change; yet, empirical evidence has so far provided mixed evidence for the role of behavioral, life history, or ecological characteristics in facilitating or hindering species range shifts. As such, the utility of trait-based approaches to predict species redistribution under climate change has been called into question. We develop the perspective, supported by evidence, that trait variation, if used carefully can have high potential utility, but that past analyses have in many cases failed to identify an explanatory value for traits by not fully embracing the complexity of species range shifts. First, we discuss the relevant theory linking species traits to range shift processes at the leading (expansion) and trailing (contraction) edges of species distributions and highlight the need to clarify the mechanistic basis of trait-based approaches. Second, we provide a brief overview of range shift-trait studies and identify new opportunities for trait integration that consider range-specific processes and intraspecific variability. Third, we explore the circumstances under which environmental and biotic context dependencies are likely to affect our ability to identify the contribution of species traits to range shift processes. Finally, we propose that revealing the role of traits in shaping species redistribution may likely require accounting for methodological variation arising from the range shift estimation process as well as addressing existing functional, geographical, and phylogenetic biases. We provide a series of considerations for more effectively integrating traits as well as extrinsic and methodological factors into species redistribution research. Together, these analytical approaches promise stronger mechanistic and predictive understanding that can help society mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change on biodiversity.

Abstract: Tensor completion refers to the problem of recovering the missing, corrupted or unobserved entries in data represented by tensors. In this paper, we tackle the tensor completion problem in the scenario in which multiple tensor acquisitions are available and do so without placing constraints on the underlying tensor's rank. Whereas previous tensor completion work primarily focuses on low-rank completion methods, we propose a novel graph-based diffusion approach to the problem. Referred to as GraphProp, the method propagates observed entries around a graph-based representation of the tensor in order to recover the missing entries. A series of experiments have been performed to validate the presented approach, including a synthetically-generated tensor recovery experiment which shows that the method can be used to recover both low and high rank tensor entries. The successful tensor completion capabilities of the approach are also demonstrated on a real-world completion problem from the field of multispectral remote sensing completion. Using data acquired from the Landsat 7 platform, we synthetically obscure image sections in order to simulate the scenario in which image acquisitions overlap only partially. In these tests, we benchmark against alternative tensor completion approaches as well as existing graph signal recovery methods, demonstrating the superior reconstruction performance of our method versus the state of the art.

Abstract: Given two orientable, cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds containing certain thrice-punctured spheres, Adams gave a diagrammatic definition for a third such manifold, their belted sum. Fully augmented links, or FALs, are hyperbolic links constructed by augmenting a link diagram. This work considers belted sum decompositions in which all manifolds involved are FAL complements. To do so, we provide explicit classifications of thrice punctured spheres in FAL complements, making them easily recognizable. These classifications are used to characterize belted sum prime FALs geometrically, combinatorially and diagrammatically. Finally we prove that, in the context of belted sums, every FAL complement canonically decomposes into FALs which are either prime or two-fold covers of the Whitehead link.

43. Brillouin laser-driven terahertz oscillator up to 3~THz with femtosecond-level timing jitter

Abstract: The terahertz (THz) frequency range, spanning 0.1 to 10 THz, is a field ripe for innovation with vast, developing potential in areas like wireless communication and molecular spectroscopy. Our work introduces a novel dual-wavelength laser design that utilizes stimulated Brillouin scattering in an optical fiber cavity to effectively generate two highly coherent optical waves with inherently mitigated differential phase noise. To guarantee robust operation, the Stokes waves are optically injected into their respective pump lasers, which also serves to greatly improve the resulting coherence. The frequency difference between the two wavelengths is converted into THz waves through a uni-traveling-carrier photodiode. This innovative design facilitates the creation of THz waves with phase noise levels of less than -100 dBc/Hz, translating to timing noise below 100 $\mathrm{as} / \sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ at 10 kHz Fourier frequency, over a carrier frequency range from 300 GHz to 3 THz. This development in phase noise reduction establishes a new benchmark in the spectral purity of tunable THz sources. Such advances are pivotal for applications to move beyond oscillator constraints, notably in advanced wireless communication systems and molecular spectroscopy.

Abstract: Terrestrial gravity perturbations caused by seismic fields produce the so-called Newtonian noise in gravitational-wave detectors, which is predicted to limit their sensitivity in the upcoming observing runs. In the past, this noise was seen as an infrastructural limitation, i.e., something that cannot be overcome without major investments to improve a detector's infrastructure. However, it is possible to have at least an indirect estimate of this noise by using the data from a large number of seismometers deployed around a detector's suspended test masses. The noise estimate can be subtracted from the gravitational-wave data; a process called Newtonian-noise cancellation (NNC). In this article, we present the design and implementation of the first NNC system at the Virgo detector as part of its AdV+ upgrade. It uses data from 110 vertical geophones deployed inside the Virgo buildings in optimized array configurations. We use a separate tiltmeter channel to test the pipeline in a proof-of-principle. The system has been running with good performance over months.

Abstract: Metasurfaces are a promising technology that can serve as a compact alternative to conventional optics while providing multiple functions depending on the properties of the incident light, such as the wavelength, polarization, and incident angle. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid VIS-NIR dielectric metasurface that can reflect 940 nm light into a specified direction while transmitting visible light (450-750 nm). The dual functionality is realized by combining an aperiodic distributed Bragg reflector with dielectric meta-tokens. 46. The production of uncertainty in three-dimensional Navier-Stokes turbulence

Abstract: We derive the evolution equation of the average uncertainty energy for periodic/homogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes turbulence and show that uncertainty is increased by strain rate compression and decreased by strain rate stretching. We use three different direct numerical simulations (DNS) of non-decaying periodic turbulence and identify a similarity regime where (a) the production and dissipation rates of uncertainty grow together in time, (b) the parts of the uncertainty production rate accountable to average strain rate properties on the one hand and fluctuating strain rate properties on the other also grow together in time, (c) the average uncertainty energies along the three different strain rate principal axes remain constant as a ratio of the total average uncertainty energy, (d) the uncertainty energy spectrum's evolution is self-similar if normalised by the uncertainty's average uncertainty energy and characteristic length and (e) the uncertainty production rate is extremely intermittent and skewed towards extreme compression events even though the most likely uncertainty production rate is zero. Properties (a), (b) and (c) imply that the average uncertainty energy grows exponentially in this similarity time range. The Lyapunov exponent depends on both the Kolmogorov time scale and the smallest Eulerian time scale, indicating a dependence on random large-scale sweeping of dissipative eddies. In the two DNS cases of statistically stationary turbulence, this exponential growth is followed by an exponential of exponential growth, which is in turn followed by a linear growth in the one DNS case where the Navier-Stokes forcing also produces uncertainty.

47. On the large scale geometry of big mapping class groups of surfaces with a unique maximal end

Abstract: Building on the work of K. Mann and K. Rafi, we analyze the large scale geometry of big mapping class groups of surfaces with a unique maximal end. We obtain a complete characterization of those that are globally CB, which does not require the tameness condition. We prove that, for surfaces with a unique maximal end, any locally CB big mapping class group is CB generated, and we give an explicit criterion for determining which big mapping class groups are CB generated. Finally, we give an example of a non-tame surface whose mapping class group is CB generated but is not globally CB., Comment: New Section 7 has been added with the proof of Theorem 1.5 as well as a discussion of the equivalence of the tame surface definitions. 14 pages, 4 figures

48. The Role of Communication and Reference Songs in the Mixing Process: Insights from Professional Mix Engineers

Abstract: Effective music mixing requires technical and creative finesse, but clear communication with the client is crucial. The mixing engineer must grasp the client's expectations, and preferences, and collaborate to achieve the desired sound. The tacit agreement for the desired sound of the mix is often established using guides like reference songs and demo mixes exchanged between the artist and the engineer and sometimes verbalised using semantic terms. This paper presents the findings of a two-phased exploratory study aimed at understanding how professional mixing engineers interact with clients and use their feedback to guide the mixing process. For phase one, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five mixing engineers with the aim of gathering insights about their communication strategies, creative processes, and decision-making criteria. Based on the inferences from these interviews, an online questionnaire was designed and administered to a larger group of 22 mixing engineers during the second phase. The results of this study shed light on the importance of collaboration, empathy, and intention in the mixing process, and can inform the development of smart multi-track mixing systems that better support these practices. By highlighting the significance of these findings, this paper contributes to the growing body of research on the collaborative nature of music production and provides actionable recommendations for the design and implementation of innovative mixing tools.

Abstract: Abstract A Rural Observatory System (ROS) was established in Madagascar to address the lack of socioeconomic data on rural areas. It collected, analyzed, and disseminated data to help formulate and evaluate development policies. From 1995 to 2015, the ROS surveyed a total of 26 areas. The ROS methodology involved annual household panel surveys using consistent questionnaires supplemented by modules covering new themes. Qualitative community surveys were used to understand local features and dynamics. The site selection combined quantitative and qualitative insights to reflect the diversity of Madagascar’s rural challenges. Quality control was comprehensive, with measures such as limiting the number of daily surveyor interviews and daily field supervision. By making this data available for 21 consecutive years, along with documentation, metadata, and code with analysis examples, we aim to facilitate their discovery, assessment, and understanding by researchers, policymakers, and social organizations. To our knowledge, this is the only available data for an in-depth analysis of the situation and trends in the rural areas of Madagascar.
