Declines in European bird populations are reported for decades but the direct effect of major anthropogenic pressures on such declines remains unquantified. Causal relationships between pressures and bird population responses are difficult to identify as pressures interact at different spatial scales and responses vary among species. Here, we uncover direct relationships between population time-series of 170 common bird species, monitored at more than 20,000 sites in 28 European countries, over 37 y, and four widespread anthropogenic pressures: agricultural intensification, change in forest cover, urbanisation and temperature change over the last decades. We quantify the influence of each pressure on population time-series and its importance relative to other pressures, and we identify traits of most affected species. We find that agricultural intensification, in particular pesticides and fertiliser use, is the main pressure for most bird population declines, especially for invertebrate feeders. Responses to changes in forest cover, urbanisation and temperature are more species-specific. Specifically, forest cover is associated with a positive effect and growing urbanisation with a negative effect on population dynamics, while temperature change has an effect on the dynamics of a large number of bird populations, the magnitude and direction of which depend on species' thermal preferences. Our results not only confirm the pervasive and strong effects of anthropogenic pressures on common breeding birds, but quantify the relative strength of these effects stressing the urgent need for transformative changes in the way of inhabiting the world in European countries, if bird populations shall have a chance of recovering.

International audience; Passive Acoustic Monitoring offers promising opportunities for biodiversity assessments and species conservation and is still in development. The robustness of community metrics depends on sampling effort and acoustic surveys should be adjusted for cost-effectiveness. Using a large-scale acoustic survey of bat assemblages conducted along 5487 survey nights across France, we assessed the effect of sampling duration on the level of confidence of four community metrics (total bat activity, species of conservation concern activity, species richness, and community specialisation index). We further investigated whether this effect varied across habitats and seasons. Overall, a high level of confidence (i.e., 95% similarity between cumulated survey nights) was reached after 2 to >20 sampling nights, depending on the community metric, the habitat and the season considered. CSI required the lowest sampling duration. A higher sampling duration was required in three-dimensionally structured habitats (e.g., forests) and habitats unfavourable to bats (e.g., intensive farmlands), while a high degree of confidence was reached earlier in more favourable habitats and non-intensive farmlands, and during the season of higher activity. Beyond providing recommendations for the design of context-dependent minimum sampling duration in acoustic surveys, we show that weighted community indices such as the CSI are efficient summary measures, and advocate for their use when monitoring resources are limited.

We report nine cases of brood parasitism in the endangered Jankowski’s Bunting Emberiza jankowskii by cuckoos in Inner Mongolia Province, China in 2018 and 2019. DNA-based and morphological evidence suggested that five chicks and four eggs of brood parasites were all Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus, for which the Jankowski’s Bunting is a regular host.

Acoustic detectors have become increasingly used by bat workers to investigate bat ecology and assess the impacts of anthropogenic pressures. Within these studies, the metric used, ‘bat activity’, is based on the number of bat passes, without considering the bat pass duration (i.e. each event of a bat detected within the range of an ultrasonic detector). We expected that bat pass duration may contain information about site quality in terms of foraging potential. Because bats are expected to have a more sinuous trajectory and slower velocity when they exhibit foraging behaviour, as opposed to commuting behaviour, we hypothesize a longer bat pass duration in favourable habitats; during seasons with important energetic demands; or during night peak activity. We used datasets from a large-scale acoustic bat survey (n = 2890 sites), with a total of 24,597 bat pass measures from 6 taxa, and performed GLMM modelling. We detected a significant effect of habitat type on bat pass duration for five taxa. Shorter bat pass durations were detected at the beginning of the night. We detected longer pass durations during the lactation period or just before hibernating, while weather conditions or ageing and wear of the detector rarely influenced bat pass duration. Bat pass duration appears to be a simple and easy measure for position calls on a gradient between commuting vs. foraging behaviour. We suggest that the traditional measure of bat activity may be weighted by bat pass duration by giving more weight to events with potentially stronger links to foraging behaviour.

To test the role of connectivity, a diversity of scales accounting for the different processes underlying species distribution needs to be considered. Several approaches exist for accounting for the potential connectivity, mainly based on structural versus functional methods. Based on occupancy data, our aim was to assess the relative power of connectivity metrics in explaining amphibian distribution when accounting for cross‐scale effects from pond to network scales, and to identify network features relevant to amphibian conservation in agricultural landscapes in the Seine‐et‐Marne department (east of Paris, France).We propose an original analytical framework that allows examining different spatial scales of influence, with a focus on connectivity. We analyse the distribution of three amphibian species (Bufo bufo, Rana dalmatina, and Lissotriton vulgaris) in relation to various pond conditions (fish presence, water quality, and nearby woodland habitat) as well as connectivity using three connectivity approaches: (1) structural, (2) area‐functional based on potential migration areas, and (3) path‐functional based on the least accumulated cost paths. Values of landscape resistance were assigned according to a biological risk‐based approach that is proposed as an enhanced, transparent expert‐based approach. We further investigated cross‐scale effects in amphibian responses to the environment by assessing the relative importance of pond and network characteristics as well as their interactions.Despite some species‐specific characteristics, the area‐functional approach of connectivity was generally the most effective in explaining species distribution by emphasising the relevance of potential migration areas as conservation units. Although pond conditions usually had a greater influence than network connectivity, we highlighted important cross‐scale and threshold effects in species’ response to local conditions, to pond connectivity, and to the availability of potentially suitable terrestrial habitats in the networks.Our cross‐scale approach accounts for scale‐dependent processes that potentially underlie amphibian distribution such as habitat selection and metapopulation dynamics. Both structural and functional connectivity should be considered as complementary features of pond connectivity when dispersal traits are likely to be less limiting. From a management perspective, our results encourage conservation plans to combine functional network‐centred strategies with the preservation of local conditions. We give guidelines as to the features of such networks to help maintain amphibian populations in agricultural landscapes.

Anthropogenic activities, such as agricultural intensification, caused large declines in biodiversity, including farmland birds. In addition to demographic consequences, anthropogenic activities can result in loss of genetic diversity, reduction of gene flow and altered genetic structure. We investigated the distribution of the genetic variation of a declining farmland and long- distance migratory bird, the ortolan bunting Emberiza hortulana, across its European breeding range to assess the impact of human-driven population declines on genetic diversity and structure in order to advise conservation priorities. The large population declines observed have not resulted in dramatic loss of genetic diversity, which is moderate to high and constant across all sampled breeding sites. Extensive gene flow occurs across the breeding range, even across a migratory divide, which contributes little to genetic structuring. However, gene flow is asymmetric, with the large eastern populations acting as source populations for the smaller western ones. Furthermore, breeding populations that underwent the largest declines, in Fennoscandia and Baltic countries, appear to be recently isolated, with no gene exchange occurring with the eastern or the western populations. These are signs for concern as declines in the eastern populations could affect the strength of gene flow and in turn affect the western populations. The genetic, and demographic, isolation of the northern populations make them particularly sensitive to loss of genetic diversity and to extinction as no immigration is occurring to counter-act the drastic declines. In such a situation, conservation efforts are needed across the whole breeding range: in particular, protect- ing the eastern populations due to their key role in maintaining gene flow across the range, and focussing on the northern populations due to their recent isolation and endangered status.

a b s t r a c t The use of forward scenarios to forecast the environmental implications of potential changes in climate and land use is a useful tool for policy development. In this paper, we projected the potential responses of bird communities to both climate and agricultural changes. We created four scenarios of agricultural changes (current trends, biofuel development, livestock extensification and agricultural extensification), each developed at national or regional level of policy-making. We further considered three climatic scenarios (A1B, A2 and B1) from among the IPCC 4th Assessment Report scenarios. We assessed changes in bird communities based on the predicted changes in agricultural land use and climatic suitability using various indicators, including the European Farmland Bird Indicator (FBI) and the Community Specialisation Index (CSI). We found that trends in the different indicators differed greatly from each other depending on the agricultural scenarios and policy-making scale. Our results suggest that public policies that promote extensive agricultural practices are more appropriate for improving the fate of bird communities in agricultural landscapes, especially with the regionalisation of agricultural policy. These results provide a readily accessible visualisation of the potential impacts of land use and climate change on farmland bird communities.

Human activities are expected to result in a diversity of directional or stochastic constraints that affect species either directly or by indirectly impacting their resources. However, there is no theoretical framework to predict the complex and various effects of these constraints on ecological communities. We developed a dynamic model that mimics the use of different resource types by a community of competing species. We investigated the effects of different environmental constraints (affecting either directly the growth rate of species or having indirect effects on their resources) on several biodiversity indicators. Our results indicate that (i) in realistic community models (assuming uneven resource requirements among species) the effects of perturbations are strongly buffered compared to neutral models; (ii) the species richness of communities can be maximized for intermediate levels of direct constraints (unimodal response), even in the absence of trade-off between competitive ability and tolerance to constraints; (iii) no such unimodal response occurs with indirect constraints; (iv) an increase in the environmental (e.g., climatic) variance may have different effects on community biomass and species richness.

In many countries, the implementation of measures to protect declining species has led to the recolonization of some areas by bird species within their historic range. There is, however, a lack of quantitative tools for exploring and projecting such large-scale dynamics. Here, we present an approach that makes use of both census and habitat suitability data and integrates them into a spatially explicit model of colonization dynamics (cellular automaton). The Grey Heron Ardea cinerea, which has recently recolonized much of France following legal protection measures, was used as a focal species. Data analysis allowed us to quantify the positive effects of habitat quality on the probability of colonization, and to uncover both positive and negative density-dependent colony settlement processes. Projective simulations then allowed us to determine an inflection point in global colonization dynamics and predict a significant reduction in the colonization rate during the next 50 years. This makes it possible to project the spatial distribution of the species at different timescales, and to estimate the carrying capacity of France for the species (around 1500 colonies).

International audience; Climate and land use changes are key drivers of current biodiversity trends, but interactions between these drivers are poorly modeled, even though they could amplify or mitigate negative impacts of climate change. Here, we attempt to predict the impacts of different agricultural change scenarios on common breeding birds within farmland included in the potential future climatic suitable areas for these species. We used the Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) to integrate likely changes in species climatic suitability, based on species distribution models, and changes in area of farmland, based on the IMAGE model, inside future climatic suitable areas. We also developed six farmland cover scenarios, based on expert opinion, which cover a wide spectrum of potential changes in livestock farming and cropping patterns by 2050. We ran generalized linear mixed models to calibrate the effects of farmland cover and climate change on bird specific abundance within 386 small agricultural regions. We used model outputs to predict potential changes in bird populations on the basis of predicted changes in regional farmland cover, in area of farmland and in species climatic suitability. We then examined the species sensitivity according to their habitat requirements. A scenario based on extensification of agricultural systems (i.e., low-intensity agriculture) showed the greatest potential to reduce reverse current declines in breeding birds. To meet ecological requirements of a larger number of species, agricultural policies accounting for regional disparities and landscape structure appear more efficient than global policies uniformly implemented at national scale. Interestingly, we also found evidence that farmland cover changes can mitigate the negative effect of climate change. Here, we confirm that there is a potential for countering negative effects of climate change by adap-tive management of landscape. We argue that such studies will help inform sustainable agricultural policies for the future.

Landscape connectivity, defined as the degree to which the landscape facilitates or impedes movement among resource patches, has been considered to be a key issue for biodiversity conservation. However, the use of landscape connectivity measurements has been strongly criticised due to uncertainties in the methods used and the lack of validation. Moreover, measurements are typically restricted to the population level, whereas management is generally carried out at the community level. Here, we used satellite imagery and network metrics to predict the landscape connectivity at community level for semi-natural herbaceous patches in an urban area near Paris (France). We tested different measurement methods, both taking into account and ignoring the spatial heterogeneity of matrix resistance estimated by the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), and quantifying the link strength between patches with the shortest path and flow metrics. We assessed the fit of these connectivity predictions with empirical data on plant communities embedded in an urban matrix. Our results indicate that the best fit with the empirical data is obtained when the connectivity is estimated with the flow metric and takes into account the matrix heterogeneity. Overall, our study helps to estimate the landscape connectivity of urban areas and makes recommendations for ways in which we might optimise landscape planning with respect to conservation of urban biodiversity.

International audience; A number of recent authors have emphasised the increasing disconnection from conservation issues among urban dwellers. In a global increase of urbanisation, this disconnect can have an impact on conservation practices. Here, we discuss how managers of public green spaces can contribute to global biodiversity preservation, through combined efforts to preserve local biodiversity and educate the public about conservation issues. We compared several management strategies, including those that mixed direct action on local biodiversity with public education and those that did not. Two kinds of one-way communication were considered as well as a two-way communication process, which take into account different perceptions and practices of nature. We based our model on the introduction of the red-eared slider turtle, Trachemys scripta elegans, into urban French freshwater ecosystems. We found that direct actions only had a limited, short term effect on the abundance of feral turtles in green spaces and had no effect on the level of public concern about environmental questions. We also showed that a mix of different communication strategies improved people's awareness and altered behaviour with respect to introduced species issues. Finally, we showed the importance of a two-way communication that takes into account the diversity of personal perceptions and practices as regards nature in urban areas in order to achieve sustainable conservation measures and objectives.
