In recent decades, antimicrobial resistance has become a major global public health problem. A distinct category of pathogens, known by the acronym ESKAPE, has become of particular concern because of their ability to escape the effects of available antimicrobial treatments. This acronym represents a select group of pathogenic bacteria, some of which are highly resistant to antibiotics and can cause severe and potentially fatal infections. The term "ESKAPE" is an acronym derived from the initials of these bacteria and includes Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter spp. Antimicrobial resistance in these pathogens is fuelled by several factors, including overuse and misuse of antibiotics, natural selection and transfer of resistance genes between bact. To meet this challenge, the global community is engaged in multiple efforts, including research and development of new antibiotics, improving practices in the use of these drugs and promoting antimicrobial research and education. In the fight against pathogens and their antimicrobial resistance, we face a constant challenge in contemporary medicine, with significant implications for healthcare delivery and public health.
