Abstract

By 2035, the need for battery-grade lithium is expected to quadruple. About half of this lithium is currently sourced from brines and must be converted from a chloride into lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) through a process called softening. Conventional softening methods using sodium or potassium salts contribute to carbon emissions during reagent mining and battery manufacturing, exacerbating global warming. This study introduces an alternative approach using carbon dioxide (CO2(g)) as the carbonating reagent in the lithium softening process, offering a carbon capture solution. We employed an active learning-driven high-throughput method to rapidly capture CO2(g) and convert it to lithium carbonate. The model was simplified by focusing on the elemental concentrations of C, Li, and N for practical measurement and tracking, avoiding the complexities of ion speciation equilibria. This approach led to an optimized lithium carbonate process that capitalizes on CO2(g) capture and improves the battery metal supply chain's carbon efficiency.

Abstract

This study proposed using enamel surface texture and thickness for the objective detection and monitoring of erosive tooth wear (ETW), comparing them to the standard subjective Basic Erosive Wear Evaluation (BEWE). Thirty-two subjects (n = 597 teeth) were enrolled in this longitudinal observational clinical study. Enamel thickness (by cross-polarization optical coherence tomography, CP-OCT) and 3D dental microwear parameters, i.e., area-scale fractal complexity (Asfc), anisotropy (Str), and roughness (Sa) (by white-light scanning confocal profilometry), were obtained from buccal surfaces. Buccal, occlusal, and lingual surfaces were scored for BEWE and the maximum score per tooth (BEWEMax) was determined at baseline and 12 months (M12). Data outcome relationships were evaluated (alpha = 0.05). Enamel thickness decreased (p < 0.001), BEWE scores, Sa, and Str increased (p < 0.001), while Asfc did not change at M12. Baseline BEWEBuccal correlated strongly with BEWEMax (r = 0.86, p < 0.001) and moderately with BEWELingual (r = 0.42, p < 0.001), but not with enamel thickness (r = 0.03, p = 0.43). Change (Δ) in surface texture outcomes correlated poorly but significantly with ΔBEWEBuccal (r = -0.15-0.16, p < 0.001) and did not correlate with Δenamel thickness (r = 0.02-0.09, p > 0.06). Teeth with BEWE progression revealed a greater increase in ΔSa and ΔStr. These findings suggest that enamel surface roughness can potentially determine ETW severity, and CP-OCT may be relevant for clinically monitoring enamel thickness.

Abstract

Arguments for the FAIR principles have mostly been based on appeals to values. However, the work of onboarding diverse researchers to make efficient and effective implementations of FAIR requires different appeals. In our recent effort to transform the institution into a FAIR University by 2025, here we report on the experiences of the Community of Data Driven Insights (CDDI). We describe these experiences from the perspectives of a data steward in social sciences and a data scientist, both of whom have been working in parallel to provide research data management and data science support to different research groups. We initially identified 5 challenges for FAIR implementation. Abstract

The alignment of Business and Information Technology (BITa) has permeated almost all companies today, mainly due to the benefits that are perceived in their effectiveness and efficiency of their processes, both internal and external. Therefore, higher education must ensure the best settings for equipping IT-related professionals with appropriate BITa knowledge and skills. Consequently, practices related to course quality assessment emerge as critical and helpful since they are capable of generating information to improve teaching and learning processes. This study aims to describe and discuss quality assessment paths for three essential aspects in a large enrollment BITa course: examinations' design, workload, and alignment of activities and concepts to learning objectives. The course includes three main activities to promote the learning process: consultancy project development, examinations, and practical sessions with IT. We developed mixed-method research to analyze through surveys (N=110), focus groups (four sessions), workload estimator (N=251), and expert consultation (nine experts), the quality of the three aspects of interest. Data indicates that the course curriculum is well-designed, facilitating the development of BITa knowledge and skills in students. The results also uncover interesting information on helpful pedagogical practices to improve the course curriculum. The proposed approach could be extrapolated to other BITa courses and other courses with large enrollment to understand the students' experiences in relation to the three critical characteristics of learning and teaching practices studied.

Abstract

The conversion of biomass to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) holds substantial promise as a renewable energy source. Notably, HMF can be transformed into 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), a crucial reactant in biofuel production, but requires harsh operating conditions, H2, and precious metal catalysts. A recently reported Cannizzaro reaction of HMF to BHMF, characterized by its efficiency, mild conditions, and eco-friendliness, instead employed ionic liquids (ILs) to achieve high yields. In this study, combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical (QM/MM) simulations in conjunction with Metropolis Monte Carlo statistical mechanics and free-energy perturbation theory utilized M06-2X/6-31+G(d), PDDG/PM3, and the OPLS-VSIL force field to uncover important solute–solvent interactions present in the HMF to BHMF reaction pathway. The Cannizzaro reaction was examined in water and in five ILs composed of the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium [BMIM] cation coupled to hexafluorophosphate, tetrafluoroborate, thiocyanate, chloride, and bromide. Energetic and structural analysis of the rate-determining hydride transfer between HMF and the hydride-donor anion HMFOH− attributed the enhanced reactivity to highly organized solvent interactions featuring (1) hydrogen bonding between the ring protons of [BMIM] and the negatively charged carbonyl oxygen atoms on the transition structure, (2) favorable electrostatic interactions between the IL anions and solute hydroxyl groups, and (3) beneficial π–π stacking interactions between [BMIM] and the two aromatic rings present in HMF and HMFOH−. Abstract

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to assess pain catastrophizing and functional disability in pediatric patients with epidermolysis bullosa (EB) and their parents/guardians. Secondary objectives included examining relationships between pain catastrophizing, functional disability, and correlations with other factors (e.g., age, disease severity, and percent of body surface area (BSA) involved). METHODS: Patients with EB ages 8-16 and their parents/guardians who were English or Spanish speaking completed a one-time online survey. Parent measures included: demographics questionnaire, Pain Catastrophizing Scale-Parent (PCS), and Parent Functional Disability Inventory (FDI). Child measures included: PCS child and child FDI. Higher scores on both scales indicate higher levels of catastrophizing and functional disability. RESULTS: Of 31 children, the mean age was 11.47 years and the majority (70.97%) had dystrophic EB. Mean scores were: 35.84 = PCS parent; 34.58 = PCS child; 30.87 = parent FDI; 29.77 = child FDI. Abstract

This clinical study tested cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) monitoring of erosive tooth wear (ETW). Twenty participants completed a 14-day/arm, 3-arm crossover study simulating different ETW severities. Participants received two enamel specimens (per arm) and were randomized to: severe (s-ETW, lemon juice/pH:2.5/4.25%wt/vol citric acid), moderate (m-ETW, grapefruit juice/pH:3.5/1.03%wt/vol citric acid), and non-ETW (water). Enamel thickness was measured with CP-OCT (day[D] 0, 7, 14) and micro-computed tomography (μ-CT; D14). Enamel surface loss was determined with CP-OCT and optical profilometry (OP; D7, D14). CP-OCT showed higher enamel surface loss for D14 than D7 for m-ETW (P = .009) and s-ETW (P = .040) and differentiated severity at D14 (s-ETW > non-ETW, P = .027).
