Recent studies have suggested that diet may affect the gut microbiome, subsequently influencing mental health. While several systematic reviews have been done on the effects of diet on mental health via the gut microbiome, there are focused on either specific diets or mental disorders. This systematic review examines the effect of diet and broad-based mental health via the gut microbiome. 21 out of 99 studies published prior to 2023 and listed in PubMed are included. Our analysis suggests that a vegan diet, a Mediterranean-style diet, fiber, probiotics, dietary vitamin D, unpasteurized milk, foods with a low omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, and Xiao Yan Sanmay have positive effects on gut microbiome, leading to a positive influence on mental health, while a meat-rich diet, a high-fat diet, high fructose intake, and zinc deficiency may have negative effects on gut microbiome, leading to a negative influence on mental health. Collectively, the effects of diet on mental health via gut microbiome may be explained by the composition of gut microbiome and the metabolites produced by gut microbiome on gut permeability. Background: Late-life suicide is a severe public health problem in rural China; however, knowledge regarding the specific characteristics and risk factors for completed suicide via violent and non-violent methods among elderly individuals in rural China is limited.Methods: Subjects aged 60 years or older were selected from rural areas in Shandong, Hunan, and Guangxi provinces in China. This study was a 1:1 matched case-control design conducted by using the psychological autopsy method.Results: According to the univariate analyses, the presence of mental disorder, higher degree of depression, loneliness, lack of social support, hopelessness, impulsivity, and increased quantity of life events were associated with suicide in both violent and non-violent methods. For violent suicide, another risk factor was the lack of pesticides at home. For non-violent suicide, other risk factors were not currently married, family suicide history, and alcohol use disorder (P < 0.05). Variables that remained in the logistic regression model were the severity of depressive symptoms for both violent and non-violent suicide. For non-violent suicide, the degree of hopelessness was another independent risk factor. In addition, violent suicides were more likely to lack pesticides at home, choose the spring season and have an increased quantity of life events than those who died by suicide via non-violent methods.Conclusion: The major risk factor for both violent and non-violent suicide was the severity of depressive symptoms. Suicide prevention measures that focus on depression among this vulnerable population are urgently needed. Moreover, the characteristics of suicides via violent methods differed from those via non-violent methods among elderly individuals. Suicide prevention efforts should be tailored to the specific characteristics of the different suicide methods utilized by older adults in rural areas.

Two new Stenus species of the cirrus group collected from Zhejiang Province, East China, are described, S. wuyanlingus Liu, Tang & Luo, sp. n., S. yuyimingi Liu, Tang & Luo, sp. n. and a new distributional locality for S. ovalis Tang, Li & Zhao, 2005 was discovered. The diagnostic characters of the new species are illustrated, and a key to species of the group from Zhejiang Province is provided.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) can modulate the memory enhancement process during stressful events, and this modulation requires arousal-induced norepinephrine (NE) activation in the basolateral amygdale (BLA). Our previous study found that an intrahippocampal infusion of propranolol dose-dependently induced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like memory impairments. To explore the role of the noradrenergic system of the BLA in PTSD-like memory impairment, we injected various doses of NE into the BLA. We found that only a specific quantity of NE (0.3 μg) could induce PTSD-like memory impairments, accompanied by a reduction in phosphorylation of GluR1 at Ser845 and Ser831. Moreover, this phenomenon could be blocked by a protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor or calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMK II) inhibitor. These findings demonstrate that NE could induce PTSD-like memory impairments via regulation of the β-adrenoceptor receptor (β-AR)-3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP)/PKA and CaMK II/PKC signaling pathways.

Assessing bone quality and quantity at the location of dental implants before dental implantation is crucial. In recent years, dental cone-beam computed tomography (dental CBCT) has often been used to assess bone quality and quantity prior to dental implant. However, the effect of scanning resolution on the prediction of trabecular bone microarchitectural parameters (TBMPs) remains unclear. The objective of this study was to examine how dental CBCT with various scanning resolution differs with regard to predicting TBMPs. This study used micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) with 18 μm resolution and dental CBCT with 100 μm and 150 μm resolutions on 28 fresh bovine vertebrae cancellous bone specimens. Subsequently, all images were input into the ImageJ software to measure four TBMPs: bone volume total volume fraction (BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number (Tb.N), and trabecular separation (Tb.Sp). One-way analysis of variance and Tukey’s test were subsequently used to assess the differences between three scanning modes for the four TBMPs. In addition, correlations between measurement results obtained from micro-CT and dental CBCT with two resolutions were measured. The experimental results indicated that significant differences in four TBMPs were observed between micro-CT and dental CBCT (p < 0.05). The correlation coefficients between BV/TV, Tb.N, and Tb.Sp obtained from micro-CT and from dental CBCT with 100 μm resolution (0.840, 0.739, and 0.820, respectively) were greater than the correlation coefficients between BV/TV, Tb.N, and Tb.Sp obtained from micro-CT and from dental CBCT with 150 μm resolution (0.758, 0.367, and 0.724, respectively). The experimental results revealed that the TBMPs measured with dental CBCT with two resolutions differed from ideal values, but a higher resolution could provide more accurate prediction results, particularly for BV/TV, Tb.N, and Tb.Sp.

We report a clinical case of a solitary fibrous tumour of the pleura (SFTP) in a 67-year-old female patient complaining of chest pain for 2 months. A localized large mass was found in the left inferior hemithorax by computed tomography scan. The patient underwent a thoracotomy at the left side with endotracheal anaesthesia. During surgical resection, the tumour was located in the left inferior hemithorax and was attached to the inferior lobe of the left lung and diaphragmatic pleura by a fibrous pedicle. A wedge resection of the left lower lobe was undertaken to completely remove the tumour. Diagnosis of the SFTP was confirmed by the surgical findings and subsequent histological and immunohistochemical examinations. At the 6-month follow-up, no signs of local tumour recurrence or metastasis were documented. After a 3-year follow-up, this patient remains in good health.
