Abstract Spin squeezing is a key resource in quantum metrology, allowing improvements of measurement signal-to-noise ratio. Its generation is a challenging task because the experimental realization of the required squeezing interaction remains difficult. Here, we propose a generic scheme to synthesize spin squeezing in non-squeezing systems. By using periodical rotation pulses, the original non-squeezing interaction can be transformed into squeezing interaction, with significantly enhanced interaction strength. The sign of the interaction coefficient is also flippable, facilitating time-reversal readout protocol for nonlinear interferometers. The generated spin squeezing is capable of achieving the Heisenberg limit with measurement precision ∝ 1/N for N particles and its robustness to noises of pulse areas and separations has been verified as well. This work offers a path to extending the scope of Heisenberg-limited quantum precision measurements in non-squeezing systems.

Abstract The measured branching ratio of the D meson semileptonic decay $$D \rightarrow \rho e^+ \nu _e$$ D→ρe+νe , which is based on the $$0.82~{\mathrm{fb}^{-1}}$$ 0.82fb-1 CLEO data taken at the peak of $$\psi (3770)$$ ψ(3770) resonance, disagrees with the traditional SVZ sum rules analysis by about three times. In the paper, we show that this discrepancy can be eliminated by applying the QCD light-cone sum rules (LCSR) approach to calculate the $$D\rightarrow \rho $$ D→ρ transition form factors $$A_{1,2}(q^2)$$ A1,2(q2) and $$V(q^2)$$ V(q2) . After extrapolating the LCSR predictions of these TFFs to whole $$q^2$$ q2 -region, we obtain $$1/|V_{\mathrm{cd}}|^2 \times \Gamma (D \rightarrow \rho e \nu _e) =(55.45^{+13.34}_{-9.41})\times 10^{-15}~\mathrm{GeV}$$ 1/|Vcd|2×Γ(D→ρeνe)=(55.45-9.41+13.34)×10-15GeV . Using the CKM matrix element and the $$D^0(D^+)$$ D0(D+) lifetime from the Particle Data Group, we obtain $$\mathcal{B} (D^0\rightarrow \rho ^- e^+ \nu _e) = (1.749^{+0.421}_{-0.297}\pm 0.006)\times 10^{-3}$$ B(D0→ρ-e+νe)=(1.749-0.297+0.421±0.006)×10-3 and $$\mathcal{B} (D^+ \rightarrow \rho ^0 e^+ \nu _e) = (2.217^{+0.534}_{-0.376}\pm 0.015)\times 10^{-3}$$ B(D+→ρ0e+νe)=(2.217-0.376+0.534±0.015)×10-3 , which agree with the CLEO measurements within errors. We also calculate the branching ratios of the two D meson radiative processes and obtain $$\mathcal{B}(D^0\rightarrow \rho ^0 \gamma )= (1.744^{+0.598}_{-0.704})\times 10^{-5}$$ B(D0→ρ0γ)=(1.744-0.704+0.598)×10-5 and $$\mathcal{B}(D^+ \rightarrow \rho ^+ \gamma ) = (5.034^{+0.939}_{-0.958})\times 10^{-5}$$ B(D+→ρ+γ)=(5.034-0.958+0.939)×10-5 , which also agree with the Belle measurements within errors. Thus we think the LCSR approach is applicable for dealing with the D meson decays.

We introduce the one-dimensional quasireciprocal lattices where the forward hopping amplitudes between nearest neighboring sites { t + t _jR } are chosen to be a random permutation of the backward hopping { t + t _jL } or vice versa. The values of { t _jL } (or { t _jR }) can be periodic, quasiperiodic, or randomly distributed. We show that the Hamiltonian matrices are pseudo-Hermitian and the energy spectra are real as long as { t _jL } (or { t _jR }) are smaller than the threshold value. While the non-Hermitian skin effect is always absent in the eigenstates due to the global cancellation of local nonreciprocity, the competition between the nonreciprocity and the accompanying disorders in hopping amplitudes gives rise to energy-dependent localization transitions. Moreover, in the quasireciprocal Su–Schrieffer–Heeger models with staggered hopping t _jL (or t _jR ), topologically nontrivial phases are found in the real-spectra regimes characterized by nonzero winding numbers. Finally, we propose an experimental scheme to realize the quasireciprocal models in electrical circuits. Our findings shed new light on the subtle interplay among nonreciprocity, disorder, and topology.

The Anderson localization phase transition in the Aubry–André–Harper (AAH) model with p -wave superconducting (SC) pairing is numerically investigated by suddenly changing the on-site potential from zero to various finite values which fall into the extended, critical and localized phase regimes shown in this model. The time evolution of entanglement entropy (EE), mean width of wave packets and Loschmidt echo of the system exhibit distinct but consistent dynamical signatures in those three phases. Specifically, the EE grows as a power function of time with the exponent of which varies in the extended phase but keeps almost unchanged in the critical phase for different quench parameters. However, if the system is in the localized phase after a quench, the EE grows much slower and will soon get saturated. The time-dependent width of wave packets in the system shows similar behaviors as the EE. In addition, from the perspective of the dynamical phase transition, we find that the Loschmidt echo oscillates and always keeps finite when the system is quenched in the extended phase. In contrast, in the critical or localized phase, the echo will reach to zero at some time intervals or will decay almost to zero after a long-time evolution. The universal features of these quantities in the critical phase of the system with various SC pairing amplitudes are also observed.

Abstract Background To establish a normative database for macular vessel density (VD) measured by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and explore the parameters related to the VD. Methods An observational study in epidemiology. 5840 healthy elderly participants in Beichen district, Tianjin, China underwent detailed ophthalmic and systemic examinations. OCTA was performed in all subjects using a 6 × 6-mm line scan mode centered on the macula and the built-in software was used to quantify VD and stratify the retina. Results One thousand four hundred sixty-one healthy elderly citizens (30.4% men) were included, with a median age of 60.0 years (8.0 years) and an age range of 50 to 87 years.VDs in the different plexuses: superficial capillary plexus (SCP) 43.9% (3.2%), deep capillary plexus (DCP) 44.3% (2.8%), outer capillary plexus (OCP) 21.9% (5.9%), choriocapillaris (CC) 52.1% (1.4%). 90% medical reference range of the VDs at different plexuses was reported. Abstract To analyze the current status of "pseudo" unplanned endotracheal extubation in ICU patients in China's tertiary hospitals and to provide a reference for improving the quality of medical care. Through the National Nursing Quality Data Platform, unplanned endotracheal extubation data reported by ICUs in China's tertiary hospitals from 2019 to 2022 were analyzed. The situation of reported hospitals, causes, and the current status of "pseudo" unplanned endotracheal extubation in ICU patients was analyzed. The indicator of unplanned endotracheal extubation in ICUs of China’s tertiary hospitals is mainly from first-class tertiary hospitals (74.9%), most of which are self-extractions by patients (74.6%). The proportion of "pseudo" unplanned endotracheal extubation is 45.1%. "Pseudo" unplanned endotracheal extubation is common in the ICUs of China's tertiary hospitals. As such, management blind spots deserve attention from managers and clinical staff.

Abstract Background Tumors exhibit metabolic heterogeneity, influencing cancer progression. However, understanding metabolic diversity in retinoblastoma (RB), the primary intraocular malignancy in children, remains limited. Methods The metabolic landscape of RB was constructed based on single-cell transcriptomic sequencing from 11 RB and 5 retina samples. Various analyses were conducted, including assessing overall metabolic activity, metabolic heterogeneity, and the correlation between hypoxia and metabolic pathways. Additionally, the expression pattern of the monocarboxylate transporter (MCT) family in different cell clusters was examined. Validation assays of MCT1 expression and function in RB cell lines were performed. The therapeutic potential of targeting MCT1 was evaluated using an orthotopic xenograft model. A cohort of 47 RB patients was analyzed to evaluate the relationship between MCT1 expression and tumor invasion. Results Distinct metabolic patterns in RB cells, notably increased glycolysis, were identified. This metabolic heterogeneity correlated closely with hypoxia. MCT1 emerged as the primary monocarboxylate transporter in RB cells. Disrupting MCT1 altered cell viability and energy metabolism. In vivo studies using the MCT1 inhibitor AZD3965 effectively suppressed RB tumor growth. Additionally, a correlation between MCT1 expression and optic nerve invasion in RB samples suggested prognostic implications. Conclusions This study enhances our understanding of RB metabolic characteristics at the single-cell level, highlighting the significance of MCT1 in RB pathogenesis. Targeting MCT1 holds promise as a therapeutic strategy for combating RB, with potential prognostic implications.

Abstract Background We aimed to investigate the anatomical features of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and vitreous cytokine levels as predictors of outcomes of combined phacovitrectomy with intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) implants for idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) treatment. Methods A prospective, single-masked, randomized, controlled clinical trial included 48 eyes. They were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to undergo the DEX group (combined phacovitrectomy with ERM peeling and Ozurdex implantation) and control group (phacovitrectomy only). Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macular thickness (CMT) were assessed at 1 d, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. The structural features of OCT before surgery were analysed for stratified analysis. Baseline soluble CD14 (sCD14) and sCD163 levels in the vitreous fluid were measured using ELISA. Results BCVA and CMT were not significantly different in the DEX and control groups. Eyes with hyperreflective foci (HRF) at baseline achieved better BCVA (P time*group=0.746; P group=0.043, Wald χ²=7.869) and lower CMT (Ptime*group = 0.079; Pgroup = 0.001, Wald χ²=6.774) responses to DEX during follow-up. In all patients, the mean vitreous level of sCD163 in eyes with HRF was significantly higher than that in eyes without HRF (P = 0.036, Z=-2.093) at baseline. In the DEX group, higher sCD163 predicted greater reduction in CMT from baseline to 1 month (r = 0.470, P = 0.049). Conclusions We found that intraoperative DEX implantation did not have beneficial effects on BCVA and CMT over a 3-month period in all patients with iERM, implying that the use of DEX for all iERM is not recommended. In contrast, for those with HRF on OCT responded better to DEX implants at the 3-month follow-up and thier vitreous fluid expressed higher levels of sCD163 at baseline. These data support the hypothesis that DEX implants may be particularly effective in treating cases where ERM is secondary to inflammation. Trial registration The trail has been registered at Chinese Clinical Trail Registry( https://www.chictr.org.cn ) on 2021/03/12 (ChiCTR2100044228). And all patients in the article were enrolled after registration.

Background and objective: The B19 virus is mainly transmitted through the respiratory tract; however, studies have shown that it can also be transmitted through blood transfusions or plasma products. This study investigated B19V antibodies, DNA, and gene typing in blood donors at a central blood station in China to evaluate the status of B19V infection. Materials and methods: A total of 7728 samples from Suzhou Blood Center were collected from July 2022 to April 2023. Samples were detected for the B19V DNA using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, 893 selected samples were screened for the seroprevalence of B19V antibodies using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The NS1-VP1u fragment of the B19V DNA-positive samples was amplified using nested PCR, and the sequences were determined. A B19V phylogenetic tree was constructed using neighborhood joint and maximum parsimony methods to discriminate genotypes using the NS1-VP1u sequences. Results: The percentages of IgG, IgM, and DNA were 19.4 %, 1.9 %, and 0.09 %, respectively. IgG positivity increased with age, and there was a significant difference among the blood groups. The IgG levels of repeat donors were greater than those of first-time donors. There were no apparent differences in the IgM levels in all the participants. Genotyping revealed that the B19 genotype was 1. Conclusions: The prevalence of B19V antibodies and DNA was lower in these areas than in rest of China, indicating that the risk of B19V transmission via transfusion may be relatively low. However, during transfusion, particular attention should be paid to the B19V-susceptible populations, especially those in high-risk groups.

Abstract Objective This study was based on a retrospective clinical observational cohort study of a two‐center application of nusinersen in China to evaluate the clinical efficacy and adverse effects of nusinersen in the treatment of SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) Types 1–3. Methods Clinical data from children with clinically and genetically confirmed 5qSMA from a double center in western China (the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University and the Second Hospital of West China of Sichuan University). All children were younger than 18 years of age. Patients were assessed for motor function and underwent blood and fluid tests before each nusinersen injection. Results At 14‐month follow‐up, 100% of children had improved their HFMSE (Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale Expanded) score, 83.6% had improved their CHOP INTEND (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Infant Test of Neuromuscular Disorders) score, and 66.6% had improved their RULM (Revised Upper Limb Module) score by ≥3 points from baseline, and their 6MWT (6‐min walk test) was 216.00 ± 52.08 m longer than at baseline. The age of the child at the start of treatment was negatively correlated with the clinical efficacy of nusinersen; the younger the child, the better the response to treatment. No significant adverse effects affecting the treatment and quality of life of the child were observed during the treatment of SMA with nusinersen. Conclusion This study concluded that nusinersen is clinically beneficial for children with SMA in western China, with mild adverse effects.

Objective: Obesity is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Understanding the associations between comprehensive health parameters and body mass index (BMI) may lead to targeted prevention efforts. Methods: Project Baseline Health Study (PBHS) participants were divided into six BMI categories: underweight (BMI 0, hypertension, diabetes, lower HDL-C, lower vitamin D, higher triglycerides, higher hsCRP, lower mean step counts, higher mean PHQ-9 scores, and higher mean GAD-7 scores. Conclusion: We identified associations of cardiometabolic and mental health characteristics with BMI, thereby providing a deeper understanding of cardiovascular health across BMI.

Abstract Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most prevalent ocular tumor of childhood, and its extraocular invasion significantly increases the risk of metastasis. Nevertheless, a single-cell characterization of RB local extension has been lacking. Here, we perform single-cell RNA sequencing on four RB samples (two from intraocular and two from extraocular RB patients), and integrate public datasets of five normal retina samples, four intraocular samples, and three extraocular RB samples to characterize RB local extension at the single-cell level. A total of 128,454 qualified cells are obtained in nine major cell types. Copy number variation inference reveals chromosome 6p amplification in cells derived from extraocular RB samples. In cellular heterogeneity analysis, we identified 10, 8, and 7 cell subpopulations in cone precursor like cells, retinoma like cells, and MKI67+ photoreceptorness decreased (MKI67+ PhrD) cells, respectively. A high expression level of SOX4 was detected in cells from extraocular samples, especially in MKI67+ PhrD cells, which was verified in additional clinical RB samples. These results suggest that SOX4 might drive RB local extension. Our study presents a single-cell transcriptomic landscape of intraocular and extraocular RB samples, improving our understanding of RB local extension at the single-cell resolution and providing potential therapeutic targets for RB patients.

Abstract Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) infection has many neurological manifestations, and its effects on the nervous system are increasingly recognized. There has been no systematic analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) characteristics in children exhibiting neurological symptoms of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The primary aim of this study was to describe the EEG characteristics caused by COVID-19 infection in children who were showing neurological symptoms and to assess the relationship between COVID-19-related EEG changes and clinical features in these children. Method: This study included 125 pediatric patients infected with SARS-CoV2 and showing neurological symptoms, and their continuous EEG was recorded. In addition, the demographic and clinical characteristics of these patients were analyzed and the correlation between the two was investigated. Results: Abnormal EEG findings were detected in 31.20% (N = 39) of the patients. Abnormal discharges (43.59%) were the most common EEG abnormalities, followed by background abnormalities (41.03%). The proportion of patients diagnosed with febrile seizure was higher in the normal EEG group than in the abnormal EEG group (P = 0.002), while the opposite was true for epilepsy and encephalitis/encephalopathy (P = 0.016 and P = 0.003, respectively). The ATR-Chk1 pathway is essential in cellular responses to DNA damage and replication stress, whereas the role of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in regulating this pathway remains largely unknown. In this study, we identify an ATR and Chk1 interacting lncRNA (ACIL, also known as LRRC75A-AS1 or SNHG29), which promotes the phosphorylation of Chk1 by ATR upon DNA damages. High ACIL levels are associated with chemoresistance to DNA damaging agents and poor outcome of breast cancer patients. ACIL knockdown sensitizes breast cancer cells to DNA damaging drugs in vitro and in vivo. ACIL protects cancer cells against DNA damages by inducing cell cycle arrest, stabilizing replication forks and inhibiting unscheduled origin firing, thereby guarding against replication catastrophe and contributing to DNA damage repair. These findings demonstrate a lncRNA-dependent mechanism of activating the ATR-Chk1 pathway and highlight the potential of utilizing ACIL as a predictive biomarker for chemotherapy sensitivity, as well as targeting ACIL to reverse chemoresistance in breast cancer.

PurposeTo investigate the primary causes and clinical characteristics of cystic encephalomalacia (CE) in children.MethodsThe clinical data of 50 children who were admitted to our hospital due to CE between January 2008 and December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Their primary causes, clinical manifestations and cranial magnetic resonance imaging features were analyzed.ResultsAmong all patients, 5 had prematurity, 19 had hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), 13 had intracranial infection, 14 had traumatic brain injury and hemorrhage, 4 had cerebral infarction, 2 had congenital genetic diseases, and 1 had hypoglycemia. The average time from primary disease onset to CE diagnosis was 70.1 ± 61.0 days. The clinical manifestations included speech or motor developmental delay (n = 33), epilepsy (n = 31), dystonia (n = 27), limb paralysis (n = 16), and visual or auditory impairment (n = 5). Patients with HIE as the primary cause of CE had a significantly higher occurrence of dystonia, while a significantly higher incidence of paralysis was observed in those with cerebral infarction as the primary cause.ConclusionCE in children is mainly caused by HIE, intracranial infection, and cerebral hemorrhage. The major clinical manifestations included speech or motor developmental delay, epilepsy, and dystonia. Magnetic resonance imaging is an important tool for the diagnosis of CE.

The aim of this study is to compare external fixation versus intramedullary (IM) nailing to determine which strategy was more suitable for patients with open tibial shaft fractures. Eleven RCTs that compared the therapeutic outcomes between external fixation and IM nailing in patients suffering from open tibial shaft fractures were screened out from the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library in this analysis. For open tibia fractures of Gustilo-Anderson I-IIIA, significantly lower incidence of malunion and superficial infection was revealed for the IM nailing group when compared with the external fixation group. Further subgroup analyses within I-IIIA fractures showed comparable results between fractures managed with IM nails and ring external fixators. In conclusion, IM nailing is recommended over external fixation for open tibia fractures of I-IIIA. In addition, the use of ring external fixators may be more suitable than the ordinary external fixators for the treatment of I-IIIA fractures.

Abstract Background The exact pathophysiology of TS is still elusive. Previous studies have identified default mode networks (DMN) abnormalities in patients with TS. However, these literatures investigated the neural activity during the tic suppression, not a true resting-state. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal the neural mechanism of Tourette's syndrome (TS) from the perspective of topological organization and functional connectivity within the DMN by electroencephalography (EEG) in resting-state. Methods The study was conducted by analyzing the EEG data of TS patients with graph theory approaches. Thirty children with TS and thirty healthy controls (HCs) were recruited, and all subjects underwent resting-state EEG data acquisition. Functional connectivity within the DMN was calculated, and network properties were measured. Abstract Background Recent studies have suggested a potential link between systemic inflammatory regulators and primary ovarian insufficiency (POI); however, a causal relationship between them remains unclear. In this study, we explored the causal link between systemic inflammatory regulators and POI risk using a bidirectional, two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) strategy. Results This approach utilized the most extensive genome-wide association study involving 41 systemic inflammatory regulators in a sample of 8,293 Finnish individuals and POI data from the FinnGen consortium (254 cases vs. 118,228 controls). The inverse variance weighting approach served as a primary MR method, and four additional MR techniques (Maximum Likelihood, MR-Egger, Weighted Median, and constrained maximum likelihood and model averaging Bayesian information criterion ) were applied to support and validate results. Cochran’s Q statistics were used to assess the heterogeneity of instrumental variables, whereas the MR-Egger and MR Pleiotropy Residual Sum and Outlier tests detected horizontal pleiotropy. The MR Steiger test evaluated the strength of a causal association. Our findings suggest that lower levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (odds ratio [OR] = 0.73, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.54–0.99, P = 0.046) and interleukin-10 (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.33–0.85, P = 0.021) are associated with an increased risk of POI. Reverse MR analysis revealed no significant effect of POI on the expression of these 41 systemic inflammatory regulators. No notable heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy was observed in the instrumental variables. Conclusions This study revealed a causal association between 41 systemic inflammatory regulators and POI, demonstrating that decreased levels of VEGF and IL-10 are linked to an elevated risk of POI. Further investigations are necessary to assess the potential of these biomarkers as early predictors, preventive strategies, and therapeutic targets for POI.

This paper employs a unique data set to analyze the trading behavior of wealthy individual investors across Mainland China and their impact on Chinese stock markets' tail risk. Results show that the wealthy individual investors' trading behavior can explain Chinese stock markets' tail risk, and the daily investment portfolios based on the network density of wealthy individual investors have significant excess returns. This paper also investigates the determinants of wealthy individual investors' trading behavior with the social network method and the spatial econometric model, and reveals that wealthy individuals benefit from the spillover effect of their trading behavior through the investor networks. The results of this paper not only reveal micro evidence for the formation mechanism of asset prices, but also provide insight into the behavior of wealthy individual investors.

Rapid urbanization is a global phenomenon that has altered many ecosystems and created ecological risks. Landscape ecological risk (LER) reflects the extent to which ecosystems are threatened by human activities and environmental change. LER can be also employed to effectively monitor and assess environmental quality. A large number of studies have been conducted to explore the LER in the basin from the perspective of Land Use and Land Cover (LUCC). Ecological environmental issues such as land degradation have seriously hindered the sustainable development of the Yellow River Basin (YRB). Based on the LUCC data of the YRB in the four periods of 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020, this study aims to determine the most suitable spatial analysis scale using the coefficient of variation and semi-variogram, and analyzes the landscape pattern and LER of the YRB. We found that the landscape pattern of the YRB exhibits obvious scale dependence, and the analysis effect is most effective at the scale of 90 km × 90 km. Throughout the study period, the landscape pattern exhibited increasing fragmentation, a decrease in the degree of aggregation and an increase in the heterogeneity of distribution. In terms of LER, it is in a better state as most of the LER levels have shifted from higher to lower levels, and the proportion of lower and lowest risk is constantly increasing. This study improves the precision of spatial scale investigations and offers valuable insights for future studies on landscape pattern and LER in the basin.

Introduction Interpregnancy weight change may impact two important adverse perinatal outcomes: stillbirth and infant mortality. This systematic review aims to synthesise the existing evidence on the association between interpregnancy weight change and stillbirth and infant mortality.Methods and analysis This systematic review and meta-analysis will be conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses Protocols guidelines and has been registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). A comprehensive literature search of four online databases (Embase, Cochrane Libraries, Web of Science and Medline) will be conducted from inception to October 2023. Observational (longitudinal, cohort, case–control) and randomised controlled trials will be included. Interpregnancy weight/body mass index change between two consecutive pregnancies will be the exposure. The primary outcomes will be the incidence of stillbirth and infant mortality in subsequent pregnancy. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool will be used to assess the risk of bias in the randomised controlled studies and the Risk of Bias in Non-Randomised Studies of Interventions tool will be used for observational studies. If there are sufficient data, a meta-analysis will be conducted to estimate the pooled effect size. Otherwise, qualitative descriptions of individual studies will be summarised. The heterogeneity will be statistically assessed using a χ2 test and I2 statistic.Ethics and dissemination Ethics approval is not required for this study as all results will be based on published papers. No primary data collection will be needed. Study findings will be presented at scientific conferences or published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.Trial registration number A registration for this review has been submitted to PROSPERO under CRD42020222977.

Although severe abdominal pain is the main symptom of acute pancreatitis, its mechanisms are poorly understood. An emerging body of literature evidence indicates that neurogenic inflammation might play a major role in modulating the perception of pain from the pancreas. Neurogenic inflammation is the result of a crosstalk between injured pancreatic tissue and activated neurons, which leads to an auto-amplification loop between inflammation and pain during the progression of acute pancreatitis. In this review, we summarize recent findings on the role of neuropeptides, ion channels, and the endocannabinoid system in acute pancreatitis-related pain. We also highlight potential therapeutic strategies that could be applied for managing severe pain in this disease.

ABSTRACT Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) can colonize the gastrointestinal tract and cause bloody diarrhea in children. Previous studies showed that its pathogenesis could be mediated by metabolites from both the host and microbiota. L-Glutamine (Gln) was found to be depleted in intestinal tissues as the main energy source according to previous studies. Hence, we aimed to determine the effects of Gln on EHEC infection and its underlying mode of action. In this study, a Gln-limited signal was found to activate the type 3 secretion system (T3SS), which is crucial for EHEC infection via perturbation of central metabolism. By shifting the phosphorylation of NtrC, a key regulator in bacterial nitrogen metabolism, Gln stimulates ler transcripts in a σS-PchA-dependent manner. Our in vivo experiments further demonstrated that Gln supplementation can reduce EHEC colonization in the gastrointestinal tract by repressing T3SS. Moreover, Gln could further attenuate bacterial infection by boosting host defense, which might be dependent on multiple pathways. Besides, our experiments demonstrated that Gln did not induce Shiga-like toxin (Stx) production or cause impairment of gut flora. In conclusion, our study presented evidence that Gln could act against EHEC infection by reducing bacterial virulence and strengthening host defense. Therefore, Gln serves as a promising therapeutic agent for EHEC infection. IMPORTANCE The type 3 secretion system (T3SS) was obtained in many Gram-negative bacterial pathogens, and it is crucial for their pathogenesis. Environmental signals were found to be involved in the expression regulation of T3SS, which was vital for successful bacterial infection in the host. Here, we discovered that L-glutamine (Gln), the most abundant amino acid in the human body, could repress enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) T3SS expression via nitrogen metabolism and therefore had potential as an antivirulence agent. Our in vitro and in vivo evidence demonstrated that Gln could decline EHEC infection by attenuating bacterial virulence and enhancing host defense simultaneously. We repurpose Gln as a potential treatment for EHEC infection accordingly.

This paper examined Chinese undergraduate students' perceptions of using videoconferencing in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were collected among 348 Chinese university students who attended sixteen-week learning of Integrated English Course through Tencent Meeting, the most widely used videoconferencing application in China. We adopted voluntary response sampling method in this cross-sectional study. Students completed an online survey on “Wenjuanxing”, China's biggest online questionnaire distribution platform. A structural equation model (SEM) was constructed and analyses revealed that perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness were significant predictors of students' satisfaction and participation intention. Students' computer self-efficacy had a positive effect on their perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and participation intention while their frequency of using videoconferencing did not influence these variables. This study contributes to the existing literature on the acceptance of videoconferencing in the context of EFL learning and offers insights for developing up-to-date videoconferencing teaching strategies.

Objective To investigate the infection of human parvovirus B19 in Suzhou voluntary blood donors under the current blood screening model. Methods A total of 893 blood donor samples from September to December 2022 were randomly collected. Samples were tested to determine the seroprevalence (anti-B19 IgG and IgM) of B19 antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), and B19 DNA of positive samples was further detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction(PCR) assay. Results Among 893 samples, the total seroprevalence of B19 antibody was 20.7% (185/893), with anti-B19 IgG and IgM positive rate at 19.4% (173/893) and 1.9% (17/893), respectively, showing significant difference (P0.05). The prevalence of anti-B19 IgG statistically increased with age (P0.05). No statistical difference was not found in anti-B19 IgG and IgM samples among different blood groups. The anti-B19 IgG in repeated blood donors was higher than that in first-time donors(21.5% vs 15.9%)(P0.05). Three cases were found to be positive for B19 DNA in the B19 antibody positive samples, with the positive rate at 1.6%(3/185). Conclusion Although the prevalence of B19 infection in Suzhou was lower than that in other areas and was mostly past infection, there was still a certain proportion of persistent infection and acute infection, which posed the potential risk of blood transfusion transmission. Therefore, attention should be paid to blood transfusions, especially for the high-risk and susceptible groups.

Objective To investigate whether the race and ethnicity of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) influences rheumatologists’ likelihood of choosing to initiate biologic disease‐modifying antirheumatic drug (bDMARD) treatment. Methods We conducted a randomized survey experiment in which identical brief case vignettes of hypothetical patients with RA were sent to US rheumatologists (respondents). Three of the four cases included some level of treatment decision ambiguity whereas the fourth case strongly favored bDMARD initiation. Each respondent was shown the four case vignettes, with the race and ethnicity (Black, Hispanic, White) randomly assigned for each case. Each vignette offered multiple choices for next therapeutic step, which we summarized using frequencies and proportions by race and ethnicity version. Results Among 159 US rheumatologists, we found that for the three cases with some level of treatment decision ambiguity, there was little to no variability in the proportions of respondents who chose to start a biologic for the Black and Hispanic variants (cases 1, 2, and 3). For case 4, respondents generally agreed to start a biologic with some minimal variability across the variants (92.6% for the Black version, 98.1% for the Hispanic version, and 96.2% for the White version). Conclusion There are conflicting data regarding bDMARD use and initiation in patients with RA based on the sex and race of the patient. This work adds to this conversation by examining how the next therapeutic step chosen by rheumatologists varied by the race and ethnicity of the hypothetical patient.

Abstract Background Induction at 38–40 weeks of gestation has been broadly suggested for women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), yet its benefits and risks remain unclear. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze existing evidence on the effect of induction at term gestation among women with GDM. Methods We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Libraries, and Web of Science from inception to June 2021. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies comparing induction with expectant management among GDM term pregnancies. Primary outcomes included caesarean section (CS) and macrosomia. All screening and extraction were conducted independently and in duplicates. Meta-analyses with random-effects models were conducted to generate the pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using the Mantel-Haenszel method. Methodological quality was assessed independently by two reviewers using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for RCTs and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for observational studies. Results Of the 4,791 citations, 11 studies were included (3 RCTs and 8 observational studies). Compared to expectant management, GDM women with induction had a significantly lower odds for macrosomia (RCTs 0.49 [0.30–0.81]); observational studies 0.64 [0.54–0.77]), but not for CS (RCTs 0.95 [0.64–1.43]); observational studies 1.03 [0.79–1.34]). Induction was associated with a lower odds of severe perineal lacerations in observational studies (0.59 [0.39–0.88]). No significant difference was observed for other maternal or neonatal morbidities, or perinatal mortality between groups. Conclusions For GDM women, induction may reduce the risk of macrosomia and severe perineal lacerations compared to expectant management. Further rigorous studies with large sample sizes are warranted to better inform clinical implications.

Abstract. Background:. Postoperative pulmonary complications often lead to increased mortality and financial burden. Residual paralysis plays a critical role in postoperative pulmonary complications. This meta-analysis was performed to determine whether sugammadex overmatches neostigmine in reducing postoperative pulmonary complications. Methods:. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Medline through Ovid, Cochrane Library, Wanfang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Chinese BioMedical Literature Databases were searched from their inception to 24 June, 2021. Random effects models were used for all analyses. Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess the quality of RCTs, while Newcastle Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale was used to assess for the quality of cohort studies. Results:. Seventeen studies were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled data from cohort studies showed reversing neuromuscular blocking with sugammadex had less risk of compound postoperative pulmonary complications (relative risk [RR]: 0.73; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.60–0.89; P = 0.002; I2 = 81%), pneumonia (RR: 0.64; 95% CI: 0.48–0.86; I2 = 42%) and respiratory failure (RR: 0.48; 95% CI: 0.41–0.56; I2 = 0%). However, pooled data from RCTs did not show any difference between the two groups in pneumonia (RR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.24–1.40; I2 = 0%) and no respiratory failure was reported in the included RCTs. The difference was not found between sugammadex and neostigmine about atelectasis in pooled data from either RCTs (RR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.69–1.05; I2 = 0%) or cohort studies (RR: 1.01; 95% CI: 0.87–1.18; I2 = 0%). Conclusion:. The evidence of superiority of sugammadex was limited by the confounding factors in cohort studies and small scale of RCTs. Whether sugammadex precedes neostigmine in preventing pulmonary complications after surgery is still unknown. Well-designed RCTs with large scale are needed. Registration:. AbstractContext The mechanisms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Guizhi-Gancao Decoction (GGD) remain unknown.Objective This study explores the mechanisms of GGD against cardiac hypertrophy.Materials and methods Network pharmacology analysis was carried out to identify the potential targets of GGD. In vivo experiments, C57BL/6J mice were divided into Con, phenylephrine (PE, 10 mg/kg/d), 2-chloroadenosine (CADO, the stable analogue of adenosine, 2 mg/kg/d), GGD (5.4 g/kg/d) and GGD (5.4 g/kg/d) + CGS15943 (a nonselective adenosine receptor antagonist, 4 mg/kg/d). In vitro experiments, primary neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCM) were divided into Con, PE (100 µM), CADO (5 µM), GGD (10−5 g/mL) and GGD (10−5 g/mL) + CGS15943 (5 µM). Ultrasound, H&E and Masson staining, hypertrophic genes expression and cell surface area were conducted to verify the GGD efficacy. Adenosine receptors (ADORs) expression were tested via real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), western blotting and immunofluorescence analysis.Results Network pharmacology identified ADORs among those of the core targets of GGD. In vitro experiments demonstrated that GGD attenuated PE-induced increased surface area (with an EC50 of 5.484 × 10−6 g/mL). In vivo data shown that GGD attenuated PE-induced ventricular wall thickening. In vitro and in vivo data indicated that GGD alleviated PE-induced hypertrophic gene expression (e.g., ANP, BNP and MYH7/MYH6), A1AR over-expression and A2aAR down-expression. Moreover, CADO exerts effects similar to GGD, whereas CGS15943 eliminated most effects of GGD.Discussion and conclusions Our findings suggest the mechanism by which GGD inhibits cardiac hypertrophy, highlighting regulation of ADORs as a potential therapeutic strategy for HF.
