Comparative Case Analysis (CCA) is an important tool for criminal investigation and crime theory extraction. It analyzes the commonalities and differences between a collection of crime reports in order to understand crime patterns and identify abnormal cases. A big challenge of CCA is the data processing and exploration. Traditional manual approach can no longer cope with the increasing volume and complexity of the data. In this paper we introduce a novel visual analytics system, Spherical Similarity Explorer (SSE) that automates the data processing process and provides interactive visualizations to support the data exploration. We illustrate the use of the system with uses cases that involve real world application data and evaluate the system with criminal intelligence analysts.

International audience; Ultra-high-resolution (Powerwall) displays offer a vast real estate for displaying data, but also present a new set of interaction issues. This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners in the research area of Powerwall technologies. The workshop focuses on four key research questions: how do the interaction metaphors change as we move away from desktop interaction? How do we make the most of the visual resolution for data visualization? How can the physical size support collaborative work? And what are the lessons learnt from installing such displays?

These proceedings document the various presentations at the Fourth Resilience Engineering Symposium held on June 8-10, 2011, in Sophia-Antipolis, France. The Symposium gathered participants from five continents and provided them with a forum to exchange experiences and problems, and to learn about Resilience Engineering from the latest scientific achievements to recent practical applications. The First Resilience Engineering Symposium was held in Söderköping, Sweden, on October 25-29 2004. The Second Resilience Engineering Symposium was held in Juan-les-Pins, France, on November 8-10 2006, The Third Resilience Engineering Symposium was held in Juan-les-Pins, France, on October 28-30 2008. Since the first Symposium, resilience engineering has fast become recognised as a valuable complement to the established approaches to safety. Both industry and academia have recognised that resilience engineering offers valuable conceptual and practical basis that can be used to attack the problems of interconnectedness and intractability of complex socio-technical systems. The concepts and principles of resilience engineering have been tested and refined by applications in such fields as air traffic management, offshore production, patient safety, and commercial fishing. Continued work has also made it clear that resilience is neither limited to handling threats and disturbances, nor confined to situations where something can go wrong. Today, resilience is understood as the intrinsic ability of a system to adjust its functioning prior to, during, or following changes and disturbances, so that it can sustain required operations under both expected and unexpected conditions. This definition emphasizes the ability to continue functioning, rather than simply to react and recover from disturbances and the ability to deal with diverse conditions of functioning, expected as well as unexpected. For anyone who is interested in learning more about Resilience Engineering, the books published in the Ashgate Studies in Resilience Engineering provide an excellent starting point. Another sign that Resilience Engineering is coming of age is the establishment of the Resilience Engineering Association. The goal of this association is to provide a forum for coordination and exchange of experiences, by bringing together researchers and professionals working in the Resilience Engineering domain and organisations applying or willing to apply Resilience Engineering principles in their operations. The Resilience Engineering Association held its first General Assembly during the Fourth Symposium, and will in the future play an active role in the organisation of symposia and other activities related to Resilience Engineering.

The Middlesex Spatial Interactive Visualisation Environment (M-Sieve) is a spatiotemporal visual analytics tool for exploring computer network activity. M-Sieve allows the user to filter and visualize data through facets to explore and find patterns. To help guide exploration, we developed a set of rules which are used to derive a variable we call the ‘Concern Level Assessment’ (CLA). The CLA is based on attributes of nodes on the network. The rules were developed by eliciting inferences from network security domain experts. The combination of M-Sieve and the CLA allowed us to address the problem presented by the VAST 2012 Competition - Mini Challenge 1.

This report describes the joint entry from Middlesex University and the University of Leeds for Mini Challenge 3 for the VAST Challenge 2011. In order to address the challenge question, the primary tool we used was Middlesex University’s Interactive Visual Search and Query Environment (INVISQUE), which served as the user interface to the Mini-Challenge 3 news corpus. INVISQUE was supported by corpus text analytics from the University of Leeds, which provided additional information that was visualised on the INVISQUE user interface.

In this report we described our visual analytics study of the pandemic spread data from the Mini Challenge 2 of the VAST Challenge 2010. We distinguished the countries with epidemic from those that are without, identified symptoms related to the epidemic, and compared the outbreak characteristics across countries. Several small visual analytics tools are developed for different analyses. Their integration and generalization are possible future work.

As researchers and designers of crisis management training in mobile learning settings, we need to consider ways in which principles of educational design and interaction design can co-exist, in order to reach a higher quality of the analysis and design process. The paper is an input to this discussion, where the empirical data have to do with first aid in general and training cardiocerebral resuscitation in office settings specifically. Consequently, the paper contains design ideas, analysis and evaluation of current work with mobile equipment and augmented reality features, utilizing experiences from Human Work Interaction Design.
