Abstract

Grazing annual forages in dryland cropping systems has been used to integrate crop and livestock systems, rejuvenate soils, enhance in-field nutrient cycling and soil organic carbon (SOC), and increase net returns by eliminating harvest expenses and feed delivery. However, cattle (Bos taurus) could potentially degrade soil physical properties by increasing compaction and reducing water infiltration in no-tillage (NT) systems. Minimum tillage (MT) may help correct some of these potential soil quality concerns. The objective of this study was to quantify MT effects on soil properties, forage mass, and weeds compared to NT in a grazed winter triticale [×Triticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus (Secale × Triticum)] annual forage system from 2020 to 2022 near Jetmore, KS. The experiment had two tillage treatments, NT and MT (sweep plow to a depth of 5–13 cm twice during summer fallow), in a grazed continuous winter triticale cropping system. Bulk density was greater in June, pre-till (1.31 g cm−3), compared to August, post-till (1.23 g cm−3), across tillage treatments. The mean weight diameter of dry aggregates decreased, and wind-erodible fraction increased with MT. Across years, the mean weight diameter of water-stable aggregates was greater with NT compared to MT. The SOC stocks did not differ between tillage practices near the soil surface, but MT increased SOC at the 5- to 15-cm depth. Nitrate (NO3-N) concentration was 28% higher with MT compared to NT across depths at the August sampling time. Soil pH was slightly lower in NT (5.81) compared to MT (5.94). Penetration resistance was high due to frequently dry soil conditions, but there were no differences between tillage systems. Early-season forage biomass was greater in MT compared to NT in one out of two seasons. Our findings suggest that MT could be used to mitigate adverse effects of grazing on soil bulk density in NT systems but could cause short-term decreases in dry and wet aggregate stability and increased wind-erodible fraction. 12. Cover crops impact phosphorus cycling and environmental efficiency in a corn–soybean system.

Abstract

Solutions to simultaneously meet crop phosphorus (P) demand and reduce P loss from agricultural systems are required to improve the sustainability of our production. Our objective was to determine the effect of cover crop addition (with cover crop [CC], and without cover crop [NC]) and P fertilizer management (zero P control [CN], fall broadcast [FB], and spring injected [SI]) on P cycling, agronomic P use efficiency (PUE), and environmental P use efficiency (EPUE), measured as the percent of P lost in runoff water, in a no‐till corn (Zea mays)–soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotation. The experiment was a 2 × 3 factorial. Both FB and SI increased P cycling through the main crop and cover crop tissue, compared to the CN. Cover crop did not affect main crop P uptake, removal in grain, or return to soil in crop residue, but CC treatment increased total P uptake and return in the system. Cover crop effects on P uptake, removal, and return were the same regardless of P fertilization treatments. Phosphorus fertilizer and CC treatments did not affect PUE. Both FB and SI P fertilizer management decreased EPUE, although SI tended to decrease EPUE less than FB. Cover crop significantly improved EPUE only in 2019, when CC reduced erosion losses. Therefore, cover crops were not consistently beneficial for reducing the environmental effects of P fertilization, and their use cannot replace the importance of sound P fertilizer stewardship, including sub‐surface P placement. However, cover crops play an important role in improving EPUE in years with high erosion loss potential. Abstract

Selection of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes requires testing programs with complementary locations that sample environments of interest with minimal duplication. The goal of the current study was to improve prediction of genotype performance in the highly variable environments of the central Great Plains in the United States by estimating the contributions of genotype, location, and year to wheat yield variability and identifying subgroups of test locations that minimize crossover genotype-by-environment interaction. Variance components were estimated from Kansas wheat performance data from 17 locations from 1982 to 2002. Annual data sets balanced for genotypes and environments were used to generate genotype, genotype-by-environment biplots that could objectively separate locations into groups with the same top-yielding genotype. Location, year, and their interaction introduced the greatest proportion of the variability in wheat performance test yields. Frequency of common grouping during the 21-year period was used to construct six groups of test locations representing unique target environments. Evaluation of the six groups using results from two subsequent years revealed that they generally agreed with location groups observed in the previous 21 years. Smaller regional genotype-by-environment variance component estimates compared with statewide estimates further confirmed the effectiveness of the pro posed six regions for reducing genotype-by-environment interaction.

Abstract

The effects of supplemental nitrogen (N) on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seed yield have been the focus of much research over the past four decades. However, most experiments were region-specific and focused on the effect of a single N-related management choice, thus resulting in a limited inference space. Here, we composited data from individual experiments conducted across the US that examined the effect of N fertilization on soybean yield. The combined database included 207 environments (experiment x year combinations) for a total of 5991 N-treated soybean yields. We used hierarchical modeling and conditional inference tree analysis on the combined dataset to establish the relationship and contribution of several N management choices on soybean yield. The N treatment variables were: N-application (single or split), N-method (soil incorporated, foliar, etc.), N-timing (pre-plant, at a reproductive stage, etc.), and N-rate (from a 0 N control to as much as 560 kg ha−1). Of the total yield variability, 68% was associated with the effect of environment, whereas only a small fraction of that variability (< 1%) was attributable to each N variable. Averaged over all experiments, a single N application and the split N application were 60 and 110 kg ha−1 greater yielding than the zero N control treatment, respectively. A split N application with more than one method (e.g., soil incorporated and foliar) resulted in 120 kg ha−1 greater yield than zero N plots. Split N application between planting and reproductive stages (Rn) resulted in greater yield than zero N and single application during a Rn; however, the effect was not significantly different than N application at other growth stages. Increasing the N rate increased the environment average soybean yield; however, 93% of the environment-specific N-rate responses were not significant which suggested a minimal effect of N across the examined region. A large yield variability was observed among environments within the same N rates, which was attributed to growing environment differences (e.g., in-season weather conditions, soil type etc.) and non-N related management (e.g., irrigation). Conditional inference tree analysis identified N-timing and N-rate to be conditional to irrigation, and to seeding rates >420,000 seeds ha−1, indicating that N management decisions should take into account major, non-N related management practices. Overall, the analysis revealed that N management decisions had a measurable, but small, effect on soybean yield. Given the growing pressure for increasing food production, it is imperative to further examine all soybean N decisions (application method, timing, and rate) in environment- and cropping system-specific randomized trials in important agricultural regions. 34. Phytostabilization of a contaminated military site using Miscanthusand soil amendments

Abstract

Military activities can contaminate productive land with potentially toxic substances. The most common trace metal contaminant on military bases is lead (Pb). A field experiment was begun in 2016 at Fort Riley, KS, in an area with total soil Pb concentrations ranging from 900 to 1,500 mg kg–1and near‐neutral pH. The main objectives were to test the potential of Miscanthussp. for phytostabilization of the site and to evaluate the effects of soil amendments on Miscanthusgrowth, soil–plant Pb transfer, bioaccessibility of soil Pb, and soil health. The experimental design was a randomized complete block, with five treatments and four replications. Treatments were (a) existing vegetation; (b) Miscanthusplanted in untilled soil, no amendments; (c) Miscanthusplanted in tilled soil; (d) Miscanthus planted in tilled soil amended with inorganic P (triple superphosphate applied at 5:3 Pb:P); and (e) Miscanthusplanted in tilled soil amended with organic P (Class B biosolids applied at 45 Mg ha–1). Tilling and soil amendments increased dry matter yields only in the establishment year. Total Pb uptake, plant tissue Pb concentration, and soil Pb bioaccessibility were significantly less in the Miscanthusplots amended with biosolids than the Miscanthusplots with no added P across all 3 yr. Enzyme activities, organic carbon, and microbial biomass were also greater in biosolids‐treated plots. Results show that planting‐time addition of soil amendments to Pb‐contaminated soil supported Miscanthusestablishment, stabilized and reduced bioaccessibility of soil Pb, reduced concentration and uptake of Pb by Miscanthus, and enhanced soil health parameters. Lead phytoavailability and bioaccessibility were evaluated in contaminated skeet‐range soil.Phosphate amendments were effective in reducing both Pb phytoavailability and bioaccessibility.One‐time application of biosolids helped improve Miscanthusgrowth for more than 3 yr.

Abstract

Cover crops (CCs) have been promoted as a key strategy to reduce nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions by scavenging excess mineral nitrogen (N) after cash crop harvest. Optimum N fertilizer application rates are also critical to minimize N2O emissions. Integrating these strategies requires research to understand how they interact to drive N2O emissions. The objective was to evaluate N2O emissions from winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) harvest through the subsequent fallow period and grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] production phase of a long‐term, no‐till winter wheat–grain sorghum–soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr] cropping system. Fallow management treatments included chemical fallow (CF), double‐crop soybean (DSB), and two CCs: sorghum‐sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor × sorghum bicolor var. sudanese) and daikon radish (Raphanus sativus L.). Nitrogen fertilizer rates (0, 90, and 180 kg ha−1) were applied within 1 wk after sorghum planting. Soil nitrate‐N was consistently greater in CF than in the other treatments during the fallow period. Although, on average, CCs and DSB decreased cumulative N2O emissions (cN2O) by 1.75‐fold, during the fallow period compared to CF, they significantly increased cN2O in the following sorghum crop. Emissions increased with greater applications of N regardless of how the fallow was managed, indicating that N fertilizer application in the following sorghum tended to offset any potential mitigating effects of CCs and DSB. These results highlight the importance of evaluating N2O emissions for the system (fallow + following cash crop) to account for potential tradeoffs that could offset cN2O mitigation when N fertilizer is applied. Abstract

The economic feasibility of soybeans, grain sorghum, and corn in annual rotation with winter wheat using reduced tillage and no-tillage systems in the Central Great Plains was evaluated, with continuous wheat and grain sorghum also analyzed. Net returns were calculated using simulated yield and price distributions based on historical yields, two historical annual price series, and 2011 costs. Stochastic Efficiency with Respect to a Function was used to determine the preferred strategies under various risk preferences. The no-till wheat-soybean and reduced-till wheatsoybean systems are the first and second most preferred, regardless of the level of risk aversion.
