Abstract

Models of the mind are based on the possibility of computing in brain microtubules. From this point of view, information processing is the fundamental issue for understanding the brain mechanisms that produce consciousness. The cytoskeleton polymers could store and process information through their dynamic coupling mediated by mechanical energy. We analyze the problem of information transfer and storage in brain microtubules, considering them as a communication channel. 5. Quantum Models of Mind: Are They Compatible with Environment Decoherence?

Abstract

We criticize the Hameroff Penrose model in the context of quantum brain model by gravitational collapse orchestrated objective reduction, orch. OR, assumed by Penrose, and we propose instead that the decoherence process is caused by interaction with the environment. We consider it useful to exploit this possibility because of the growing importance of decoherence theory in quantum measurement, and also because quantum mechanics can be applied to brain study independently of the Hameroff Penrose model for mind and consciousness. Our conclusion is that the Hameroff Penrose model is not compatible with decoherence, but nevertheless quantum brain can still be considered if we replace gravitational collapse orch .OR with decoherence., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

In the course of the history of science, some concepts have forged theoretical foundations, constituting paradigms that hold sway for substantial periods of time. Research on the history of explanations of the action of one body on another is a testament to the periodic revival of one theory in particular, namely, the theory of ether. Even after the foundation of modern Physics, the notion of ether has directly and indirectly withstood the test of time. Abstract

A study of the question of accounting for the anthropogenic contribution of different countries or groups of countries to the increase of global temperature, instead of being restricted to their carbon emissions as adopted in the Kyoto protocol on sharing of responsibility are discussed. A discussion on the methodology and scientific aspects of the Brazilian Proposal (BP) by SBSTA/UNFCCC and results of energy sector and land use change contributions to the climate response by different countries is also presented.

Abstract

Research shows that greenhouse gas emissions can be significantly reduced through fuels derived from ethyl alcohol and sugarcane bagasse. This combination can be used as gasoline and for electricity generation. Although alcohol is more costly than regular gasoline due to low 1998 oil prices, its expense may be mitigated through technological advancements.

Different plans are developed for the use of bagasse and fuel alcohol to determine the various carbon dioxide abatement costs for each different plan. Fuel alcohol for this program in Brazil is manufactured from sugar cane and thermoelectricity is generated from bagasse. Abatement costs decrease over the period of the plans.
