In the Cordillera Darwin, southernmost South America, we used 10Be and 14C dating, dendrochronology, and historical observations to reconstruct the glacial history of the Dalla Vedova valley from deglacial time to the present. After deglacial recession into northeastern Darwin and Dalla Vedova, by ~16 ka, evidence indicates a glacial advance at ~13 ka coeval with the Antarctic Cold Reversal. The next robustly dated glacial expansion occurred at 870 ± 60 calendar yr ago (approximately AD 1150), followed by less-extensive dendrochronologically constrained advances from shortly before AD 1836 to the mid-twentieth century. Our record is consistent with most studies within the Cordillera Darwin that show that the Holocene glacial maximum occurred during the last millennium. This pattern contrasts with the extensive early- and mid-Holocene glacier expansions farther north in Patagonia; furthermore, an advance at 870 ± 60 yr ago may suggest out-of-phase glacial advances occurred within the Cordillera Darwin relative to Patagonia. We speculate that a southward shift of westerlies and associated climate regimes toward the southernmost tip of the continent, about 900–800 yr ago, provides a mechanism by which some glaciers advanced in the Cordillera Darwin during what is generally considered a warm and dry period to the north in Patagonia.

Sometime during the middle to late Holocene (8.2 ka to ∼ 1850–1900 CE), the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) was smaller than its current configuration. Determining the exact dimensions of the Holocene ice-sheet minimum and the duration that the ice margin rested inboard of its current position remains challenging. Contemporary retreat of the GrIS from its historical maximum extent in southwestern Greenland is exposing a landscape that holds clues regarding the configuration and timing of past ice-sheet minima. To quantify the duration of the time the GrIS margin was near its modern extent we develop a new technique for Greenland that utilizes in situ cosmogenic 10Be – 14C – 26Al in bedrock samples that have become ice-free only in the last few decades due to the retreating ice-sheet margin at Kangiata Nunaata Sermia ( n=12 sites, 36 measurements; KNS), southwest Greenland. To maximize the utility of this approach, we refine the deglaciation history of the region with stand-alone 10Be measurements ( n=49 ) and traditional 14C ages from sedimentary deposits contained in proglacial–threshold lakes. We combine our reconstructed ice-margin history in the KNS region with additional geologic records from southwestern Greenland and recent model simulations of GrIS change to constrain the timing of the GrIS minimum in southwest Greenland and the magnitude of Holocene inland GrIS retreat, as well as to explore the regional climate history influencing Holocene ice-sheet behavior. Our 10Be – 14C – 26Al measurements reveal that (1) KNS retreated behind its modern margin just before 10 ka , but it likely stabilized near the present GrIS margin for several thousand years before retreating farther inland, and (2) pre-Holocene 10Be detected in several of our sample sites is most easily explained by several thousand years of surface exposure during the last interglaciation. Moreover, our new results indicate that the minimum extent of the GrIS likely occurred after ∼5 ka , and the GrIS margin may have approached its eventual historical maximum extent as early as ∼2 ka . Recent simulations of GrIS change are able to match the geologic record of ice-sheet change in regions dominated by surface mass balance, but they produce a poorer model–data fit in areas influenced by oceanic and dynamic processes. Simulations that achieve the best model–data fit suggest that inland retreat of the ice margin driven by early to middle Holocene warmth may have been mitigated by increased precipitation. Triple 10Be – 14C – 26Al measurements in recently deglaciated bedrock provide a new tool to help decipher the duration of smaller-than-present ice over multiple timescales. Modern retreat of the GrIS margin in southwest Greenland is revealing a bedrock landscape that was also exposed during the migration of the GrIS margin towards its Holocene minimum extent, but it has yet to tap into a landscape that remained ice-covered throughout the entire Holocene.

A well-resolved glacial chronology is crucial to compare sequences of glacial/climate events within and between regions, and thus, to unravel mechanisms underlying past climate changes. Important efforts have been made towards understanding the Holocene climate evolution of the Southern Andes; however, the timing, patterns and causes of glacial fluctuations during this period remain elusive. Advances in surface exposure dating techniques, together with the establishment of a Patagonian 10Be production rate, have opened new possibilities for establishing high-resolution glacial chronologies at centennial/decadal scale. Here we present a new comprehensive Holocene moraine chronology from Mt. San Lorenzo (47°S) in central Patagonia, Southern Hemisphere. Twenty-four new 10Be ages, together with three published ages, indicate that the Río Tranquilo glacier approached its Holocene maximum position sometime, or possibly on multiple occasions, between 9860 ± 180 and 6730 ± 130 yr. This event(s) was followed by a sequence of slightly smaller advances at 5750 ± 220, 4290 ± 100 (?), 3490 ± 140, 1440 ± 60, between 670 ± 20 and 430 ± 20, and at 390 ± 10 yr ago. By comparing our results with other glacier chronologies from central and southern Patagonia, we explore the role of the Southern Westerly Winds as a pacemaker of the Holocene glacier fluctuation in southern South America.

We have developed a method for routine processing of pyroxenes for cosmogenic 10Be analyses, offering a multi-nuclide (3He/10Be) approach for mafic terranes. Analyzing multiple cosmogenic nuclides from the same rock/mineral (most commonly, 26Al/10Be and 10Be/21Ne in quartz) enables quantification of complex exposure histories, including burial times, and erosion and denudation rates. This requires measurement of at least two cosmogenic nuclides whose production ratios and systematics are well known. For example, in quartz-bearing lithologies, the 26Al-10Be pair is routinely used because the production ratio of ~7 is relatively well constrained. In mafic lithologies, the 3He-10Be pair is a viable candidate for multi-nuclide studies because 3He is routinely measured in pyroxenes, and preliminary studies demonstrate that beryllium extraction from pyroxene grains is possible. Despite the potential of this nuclide pair, there is not yet a simple method for extracting beryllium from pyroxenes given that this mineral has high elemental concentrations and retains meteoric 10Be within the crystal lattice. Here, we present a method for beryllium extraction from pyroxenes, modified from the extraction method in quartz, that will enable routine use of the 3He-10Be pair. We demonstrate that hydrofluoric acid leaching not only allows for separation of large amounts of clean pyroxene, even from fine-grained lithologies such as Ferrar Dolerite, but also successfully removes meteoric 10Be. The addition of a simple precipitation step prior to ion exchange chromatography adequately reduces the cation load, allowing us to proceed with the same beryllium extraction chemistry used for quartz. Together, this approach allows for routine processing for 10Be analyses in pyroxene. Using our 10Be measurements, we present a preliminary 10Be production rate in pyroxene, referenced to 3He, for the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, meaning that the 3He-10Be pair can already be used to evaluate complex exposure histories. With this result, we are optimistic that the presented extraction method opens new opportunities for multi-nuclide applications in mafic lithologies.

Alpine glaciers are sensitive indicators of changes in climate, and their ubiquity in mountainous regions make them valuable proxies for terrestrial climate reconstructions worldwide. However, the timing and extent of glacier change across the South American mid-latitudes through the Holocene are still poorly constrained relative to their counterparts in the Northern Hemisphere. Here we report a new 10Be surface exposure-based chronology of moraines recording a series of progressively less-extensive glacier advances of Glaciar Torre (Argentina, 49.3°S/73.0°W) since the Last Glacial Maximum, with expansions culminating at 17,600 ± 900, 13,500 ± 500, 9700 ± 400, 6900 ± 200, 6100 ± 300, 4500 ± 200, and 530 ± 60 yr BP. The declining magnitude of Holocene glacier expansions parallels a gradual rise in local summer insolation intensity during the Holocene, while individual advances occurred during inferred negative Southern Annular Mode (SAM)-like states at centennial to millennial timescales. These observations suggest that (i) summer insolation intensity modulated antiphased trends in glacier extent in the polar hemispheres during the Holocene, and that (ii) centennial-scale ‘SAM-like’ temperature and precipitation anomalies paced glacier fluctuations throughout Patagonia. Given the persistence of the inferred ’SAM-like’ anomalies throughout the Holocene, the modern measured trend towards positive SAM index conditions could mark the onset of a fundamental shift in the climate of the Southern Hemisphere midlatitudes that warrants consideration in projections of future climate.

We undertook geomorphological mapping in conjunction with 10Be surface-exposure dating in a previously unstudied sector of the left-lateral moraine sequence of the ice-age Pukaki glacier in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. The mapping and dating approach enabled the identification of six distinct moraine belts that were formed during maxima of glacier extent during the last glaciation. The chronology implies that ice recession occurred during Northern Hemisphere Heinrich stadials, while expansion occurred between Heinrich stadials. The ages of the moraine belts identified here are 44,000 ± 1000 yrs; 41,800 ± 1100 yrs; 36,450 ± 940 yrs 26,730 ± 740 yrs; 20,030 ± 460 yrs; and 18,000 ± 400 yrs. This moraine chronology is consistent with previous dating results from other sectors of the Pukaki moraine sequence, except that the c. 44,000 yr old moraine belt has not previously been detected elsewhere in the Pukaki moraines. Collectively with previously published 10Be chronologies from the Pukaki glacier, and the adjacent Ohau glacier valley, the results demonstrate that there were several millennial-scale episodes of ice advance to full-glacial extent, and subsequent ice recession, during Marine Isotope Stages 3 and 2. This millennial-scale pulsebeat of oscillations of the Pukaki and Ohau glaciers in sympathy with the North Atlantic Heinrich episodes is further emphasized by rapid ice recession in the Southern Alps early in the last glacial termination, coeval with the onset of Heinrich stadial 1 (HS 1) in the Northern Hemisphere. That this pattern is widespread in mid-latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere is highlighted by similar chronologies of glacier variation for Andean ice lobes in the Chilean Lake District of South America.

Beryllium-10 has become the premiere cosmogenic nuclide for quantifying Earth-surface process. Routine measurement of 10Be at the ≤ 2–3% precision level, coupled with precise 10Be production-rate calibrations, now allow for 10Be-based records of glacier and ice-sheet change to be reliably compared to independent records of climate variability. Here, we review efforts over the last 10+ years to characterize the Holocene behavior of ice sheets and glaciers fringing Baffin Bay using in situ 10Be. Hundreds of 10Be measurements present a detailed picture of ice-margin migration through the early Holocene. Widespread net deglaciation was interrupted by ice-margin readvances or stillstands, marked by modes of moraine deposition, near the end of the Younger Dryas (12.9–11.7 ka BP), 10.4–10.2 ka BP, 9.3 ka BP, and 8.2 ka BP, with perhaps additional widespread moraine deposition occurring ca. 9.7 ka BP and 7.3 ka BP. Modes of moraine deposition encompass independent and glaciologically distinct ice masses – the Greenland and Laurentide ice sheets and local alpine glaciers situated on Baffin Island and western Greenland – providing a robust, albeit discontinuous, record of widespread climatic changes in the Baffin Bay region in the early Holocene. Periods of glacier advance coincide with abrupt cooling events documented in Summit Greenland ice cores indicating that i) Baffin Bay ice masses largely followed the pattern of temperature change displayed in Greenland ice cores, ii) abrupt cooling events were of sufficient magnitude and duration to briefly synchronize the behavior of independent and glaciologically distinct ice masses across Baffin Bay despite varying degrees of dynamical influence, and iii) centennial-scale synchronization of ice masses requires that abrupt temperature changes recorded at Summit Greenland also occurred during the summertime within glacier ablation zones. Advancements in 10Be methodology combined with an environment conducive towards developing 10Be-based records of ice-margin change has resulted in ice-margin reconstructions that identify a potentially fundamental negative feedback mechanism inherent to melting ice sheets in the Baffin Bay region – elevated and episodic meltwater delivery into the Labrador Sea results in a decrease in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and regional cooling, which, in turn, drives a brief reversal of deglaciation. Under the right conditions 10Be can be used to develop centennial-scale, climatically relevant records of glacier and ice-sheet change.

Robust glacial chronologies are needed to address the fundamental questions of when and why Ice Age climates begin and end. Well-preserved glacial deposits left by large ice sheet lobes adjacent to Estrecho de Magallanes (53°S; Chile) in southernmost South America provide a unique opportunity to reconstruct the timing and fine structure of the last two major glaciations, as well as the last termination. We present a new precise 10Be surface exposure dataset of 34 moraine boulders directly tied to a recently published, high resolution glacial geomorphic map of the deposits left by the Magallanes lobe. We find that the southern section of the Patagonian Ice Sheet was more extensive during Marine Isotope Stage 4 (MIS 4) than during MIS 2, representing the first direct dating of the MIS 4 glacier culmination in South America. Similar to the MIS 2 glacial maxima, within MIS 4 there were multiple advances that we date (n = 6 samples) to between 67.5 ± 2.1 and 62.1 ± 2.0 ka. A similarly timed MIS 4 advance was identified in New Zealand, indicating that this is a hemisphere-wide glacier-climate signal, which is further corroborated by South Atlantic and Pacific temperature proxy records. Inboard of the MIS 4 moraine complex, we date a sequence of geomorphically distinct MIS 2 moraines that represent separate major periods of glacial stability. The MIS 2 maximum extent occurred by 27.4 ± 0.8 ka (n = 4; arithmetic mean, with the standard error of the mean and 3% propagated production rate error) and was followed by at least four more full glacial culminations at 25.7 ± 0.8 (n = 3), 23.9 ± 0.8 (n = 5), 19.1 ± 0.7 (n = 3), and 18.1 ± 0.6 ka (n = 3), which represent periods when the glacier was in equilibrium with the climate for long enough to form major moraines. About 18 km inboard, this sequence is followed by smaller-scale recessional moraine crests, deposited on drumlinized terrain rather than a moraine drift, that we date to 18.0 ± 0.8 ka, indicating the glacier was in net retreat at this time. Tentative results from a 2D ice sheet model suggest that the Magallanes lobe may have reached mapped inner and outer MIS 2 moraines from a climate with approximately 4.5 °C and 5.5 °C cooler summers, respectively, assuming ∼25% less annual precipitation, relative to modern climate. We hypothesize that during the last glacial cycle, shifts in the subtropical and subantarctic fronts, and related ocean-atmosphere patterns, explain MIS 4 to 2 glacial behavior in the southern mid-latitudes.

Measurements of cosmic-ray-produced 10Be and 26Al in a bedrock core from beneath the summit of the Greenland Ice Sheet show that Greenland was nearly ice-free for extended periods under Pleistocene climate forcing. The Greenland Ice Sheet is a main contributor to modern sea-level rise, but its stability during past warm periods is uncertain, thus compromising our ability to robustly predict future rates and magnitudes of ice loss. Joerg Schaefer and colleagues present cosmogenic isotope evidence, from bedrock samples from beneath an ice core near the summit of the ice sheet, to show that the Greenland Ice Sheet was largely ice-free at some point during the Pleistocene. The data cannot constrain the time or duration of ice-free conditions, and seem incompatible with our current understanding of ice-sheet behaviour. Nevertheless, alternative explanations for the cosmogenic data are lacking, suggesting that our understanding of the response of the Greenland Ice Sheet to past warmth remains incomplete. The Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) contains the equivalent of 7.4 metres of global sea-level rise1. Its stability in our warming climate is therefore a pressing concern. However, the sparse proxy evidence of the palaeo-stability of the GIS means that its history is controversial (compare refs 2 and 3 to ref. 4). Here we show that Greenland was deglaciated for extended periods during the Pleistocene epoch (from 2.6 million years ago to 11,700 years ago), based on new measurements of cosmic-ray-produced beryllium and aluminium isotopes (10Be and 26Al) in a bedrock core from beneath an ice core near the GIS summit. Models indicate that when this bedrock site is ice-free, any remaining ice is concentrated in the eastern Greenland highlands and the GIS is reduced to less than ten per cent of its current volume. Our results narrow the spectrum of possible GIS histories: the longest period of stability of the present ice sheet that is consistent with the measurements is 1.1 million years, assuming that this was preceded by more than 280,000 years of ice-free conditions. Other scenarios, in which Greenland was ice-free during any or all Pleistocene interglacials, may be more realistic. Our observations are incompatible with most existing model simulations that present a continuously existing Pleistocene GIS. Future simulations of the GIS should take into account that Greenland was nearly ice-free for extended periods under Pleistocene climate forcing.

We present a comprehensive 10Be chronology for Holocene moraines in the Lago Argentino basin, on the east side of the South Patagonian Icefield. We focus on three different areas, where prior studies show ample glacier moraine records exist because they were formed by outlet glaciers sensitive to climate change. The 10Be dated records are from the Lago Pearson, Herminita Península-Brazo Upsala, and Lago Frías areas, which span a distance of almost 100 km adjacent to the modern Icefield. New 10Be ages show that expanded glaciers and moraine building events occurred at least at 6120 ± 390 (n = 13), 4450 ± 220 (n = 7), 1450 or 1410 ± 110 (n = 18), 360 ± 30 (n = 5), and 240 ± 20 (n = 8) years ago. Furthermore, other less well-dated glacier expansions of the Upsala Glacier occurred between ~1400 and ∼1000 and ∼2300 and ∼2000 years ago. The most extensive glaciers occurred over the interval from ∼6100 to ∼4500 years ago, and their margins over the last ∼600 years were well within and lower than those in the middle Holocene. The 10Be ages agree with 14C-limiting data for the glacier histories in this area. We then link southern South American, adjacent South Atlantic, and other Southern Hemisphere records to elucidate broader regional patterns of climate and their possible causes. In the early Holocene, a far southward position of the westerly winds fostered warmth, small Patagonian glaciers, and reduced sea ice coverage over the South Atlantic. Although we infer a pronounced southward displacement of the westerlies during the early Holocene, these conditions did not occur throughout the southern mid-high latitudes, an important exception being over the southwest Pacific sector. Subsequently, a northward locus and/or expansion of the winds over the Patagonia-South Atlantic sector promoted the largest glaciers between ∼6100 and ∼4500 years ago and greatest sea ice coverage. Over the last few millennia, the South Patagonian Icefield has experienced successive century-scale advances superimposed on a long-term net decrease in size. Our findings indicate that glaciers and sea ice in the Patagonian-South Atlantic sector of the Southern Hemisphere did not achieve their largest Holocene extents over the last millennium. We conclude that a pattern of more extensive Holocene ice prior to the last millennium is characteristic of the Southern Hemisphere middle latitudes, which differs from the glacier history traditionally thought for the Northern Hemisphere. The Nipigon channels, located to the west and northwest of Lake Nipigon, Ontario, are thought to have enabled the eastward drainage of meltwater from glacial Lake Agassiz during the last deglaciation. Here we present the first direct ages of flood deposits in two of these channels using 10Be surface exposure dating. Five 10Be ages of a coarse-grained deposit near the Roaring River in the Kaiashk channel complex indicate deglaciation and cessation of water flow by ∼11 070 ± 430 years. To test for inherited nuclides in boulder samples, we also measured the 10Be concentrations of the undersides of two boulders at the Roaring River site. Five 10Be ages of boulders atop a large bedform near Mundell Lake in the Pillar channel complex indicate deglaciation and cessation of water flow by ∼10 770 ± 240 years. Two 10Be ages of nearby bedrock are slightly younger (10 340 ± 260 and 9860 ± 270 years). The 10Be ages from the two sites are statistically indistinguishable and indicate that Laurentide Ice Sheet recession occurred rapidly in the region. We used clast diameters and channel dimensions at the Mundell Lake site to estimate paleodischarge and evaluate the possibility that meltwater drainage influenced climate conditions. We estimate a large maximum discharge of 119 000–159 000 m3·s−1 at the site. However, the timing of meltwater discharge at both Roaring River and Mundell Lake is not contemporaneous with abrupt climate events.

Southern Hemisphere Holocene glacier chronologies are important for unraveling past climate change, mid-to-high latitude teleconnections, and regional to global climate forcing. At present, a significant number of glacier chronologies for Patagonia are based on 14C dating, which may afford only maximum- or minimum-limiting dates. Here, we combine geomorphology and stratigraphy with radiocarbon (14C) and beryllium-10 (10Be) surface exposure-age dating at three outlet glaciers, Zapata, Tyndall, and Pingo. These glaciers drain the southernmost tip of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field at Torres del Paine National Park, Chile (51°S). After an expansion that we date at 3200 yr. B.P., the Torres del Paine glaciers expanded to their last major Late Holocene maxima at 600 and 340 yr. B.P., with the final dated readvance after 190 yr. B.P. We use these data, together with other Patagonian glacier records, to define the early, mid and final glacial stages of the last millennium. These cold events were separated by warm conditions that allowed the Nothofagus forest to colonize deglaciated land. The presence of near-concurrent glacier fluctuations in Patagonia and Antarctic Peninsula indicates widespread cooling punctuated the Late Holocene, including the last millennium, across much of the extratropical Southern Hemisphere. We link this cooling to cold oceanographic-atmospheric conditions forced by a northern shift or intensification of the Southern Westerly Winds. Such scenario increased northward advection of cold Antarctic circumpolar water along western Patagonia and favored decreased upwelling of warm circumpolar deep water together with expanded sea ice around the Antarctic Peninsula.

Climate changes during the Late Glacial period (LG; 15-11 ka) as recorded in Greenland and Antarctic ice cores show a bipolar pattern. Between 14.5 ka and 13 ka ago, the northern latitudes experienced the Bølling/Allerød (BA) warm period, while southern records feature the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR). Between 12.9 ka and 11.7 ka ago, the north was under the Younger Dryas (YD) cold spell while southern latitude temperature rose in parallel to atmospheric CO2 concentrations. While the southern hemisphere pattern is well documented in mountain glacier moraine records from New Zealand and Patagonia, in northern mid-latitudes and the Arctic, the LG glacier culmination has been connected to the YD stadial, apparently confirming the bipolar pattern. We present a geomorphic map of mountain glaciers in Arctic Norway, a cosmogenic nuclide chronology from 71 moraine boulders from the LG and the Holocene, and first-order glacier modeling experiments. The model and dating results show that the studied mountain glaciers are most sensitive to summer-temperature change, that their response to those changes is highly correlated to a wider region and that these mountain glaciers in Arctic Norway reached their maximum LG extent about 14 ka ago, prior to the YD. Following considerable retreat through the first part of the YD, glaciers re-stabilized in the mid-YD and showed slower oscillatory retreat through the latter part of the YD. We compare this glacier pattern to updated earlier glacier records in the wider Arctic and North Atlantic region and propose a pattern of coherent glacier response to climate changes during this interval. The LG results from Arctic glaciers show consistency to the glacier record from New Zealand and Patagonia. This first-order interhemispheric coherency of LG mountain glacier fluctuations driven mainly by summer temperature would support the view that the bipolar seesaw was primarily a northern winter phenomenon during the LG period, and the YD in particular. We obtained 49 new 10Be ages that document the activity of the former Northern Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet, and subsequently the James Ross Island Ice Cap and nearby glaciers, from the end of the last glacial period until the last ∼100 years. The data indicate that from >11 to ∼8 ka marked recession of glacier systems occurred around James Ross Island, including tidewater and local land-terminating glaciers. Glaciers reached heads of bays and fjords by 8-7 ka. Subsequently, local glaciers were larger than present around (at least) 7.5-7 ka and ∼5-4 ka, at times between 3.9 and 3.6 ka and just after 3 ka, between ∼2.4 and ∼1 ka, and from ∼300 to ∼100 years ago. After deglaciation, the largest local glacier extents occurred between ∼7 ka and ∼4 ka. Comparison with other paleoclimate records, including of sea ice extent, reveals coherent climate changes over ∼15° of latitude. In the early Holocene, most of the time a swath of warmth spanned from southern South America to the Antarctic Peninsula sector. We infer such intervals are times of weakening and/or poleward expansion of the band of stronger westerlies, associated with contraction of the polar vortex. Conversely, increased sea ice and equatorward expansion of the westerlies and the polar vortex favor larger glaciers from Patagonia to the Antarctic Peninsula, which typically occurred after ∼8 ka, although warm stretches did take place. For example, on the Antarctic Peninsula and in Patagonia the interval from 4 to ∼3 ka was typically warm, but conditions were not uniform in either region. We also infer that reduced and expanded glacier extents in Patagonia and the eastern Antarctic Peninsula tend to occur when conditions resemble a persistent positive and negative southern annular mode, respectively.

Here we address a long-standing puzzle of ice-age climate called the “fly in the ointment of the Milankovitch theory.” Using geomorphic mapping and 10Be surface-exposure dating, we show that five moraine belts were formed during maxima of the last ice age by the Pukaki glacier in New Zealand’s Southern Alps. They afford ages of 41.76 ± 1.09 ka, 35.50 ± 1.26 ka, 27.17 ± 0.68 ka, 20.27 ± 0.60 ka, and 18.29 ± 0.49 ka. These five maxima spanned an entire precessional cycle in summer insolation intensity at the latitude of the Southern Alps. A similar mismatch between summer insolation and glacier extent also characterized the Chilean Lake District in the mid-latitudes of South America. Thus, in apparent contrast to northern ice sheets linked by Milankovitch to summer insolation at 65°N latitude, the behavior of southern mid-latitude glaciers was not tied to local summer insolation intensity. Instead, glacier extent between 41.76 ka and 18.29 ka, as well as during the last termination, was aligned with Southern Ocean surface temperature and with atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Glacial maxima and their terminations provide key insights into inter-hemispheric climate dynamics and the coupling of atmosphere, surface and deep ocean, hydrology, and cryosphere, which is fundamental for evaluating the robustness of earth's climate in view of ongoing climate change. The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ∼26–19 ka ago) is widely seen as the global cold peak during the last glacial cycle, and its transition to the Holocene interglacial, dubbed 'Termination 1 (T1)', as the most dramatic climate reorganization during this interval. Climate records show that over the last 800 ka, ice ages peaked and terminated on average every 100 ka (‘100 ka world’). However, the mechanisms pacing glacial–interglacial transitions remain controversial and in particular the hemispheric manifestations and underlying orbital to regional driving forces of glacial maxima and subsequent terminations remain poorly understood.

Interhemispheric differences in the timing of pauses or reversals in the temperature rise at the end of the last ice age can help to clarify the mechanisms that influence glacial terminations. Our beryllium-10 (10Be) surface-exposure chronology for the moraines of the upper Rakaia valley of New Zealand's Southern Alps, combined with glaciological modeling, show that late-glacial temperature change in the atmosphere over the Southern Alps exhibited an Antarctic-like pattern. During the Antarctic Cold Reversal, the upper Rakaia glacier built two well-defined, closely-spaced moraines on Reischek knob at 13,900 ± 120 [1σ; ± 310 yrs when including a 2.1% production-rate (PR) uncertainty] and 13,140 ± 250 (±370) yrs ago, in positions consistent with mean annual temperature approximately 2 °C cooler than modern values. The formation of distinct, widely-spaced moraines at 12,140 ± 200 (±320) and 11,620 ± 160 (±290) yrs ago on Meins Knob, 2 km up-valley from the Reischek knob moraines, indicates that the glacier thinned by ∼250 m during Heinrich Stadial 0 (HS 0, coeval with the Younger Dryas 12,900 to 11,600 yrs ago). The glacier-inferred temperature rise in the upper Rakaia valley during HS 0 was about 1 °C. Because a similar pattern is documented by well-dated glacial geomorphologic records from the Andes of South America, the implication is that this late-glacial atmospheric climate signal extended from 79°S north to at least 36°S, and thus was a major feature of Southern Hemisphere paleoclimate during the last glacial termination.

The termination of the last ice age featured a major reconfiguration of Earthʼs climate and cryosphere, yet the underlying causes of these massive changes continue to be debated. Documenting the spatial and temporal variations of atmospheric temperature during deglaciation can help discriminate among potential drivers. Here, we present a 10Be surface-exposure chronology and glaciological reconstruction of ice recession following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in the Rakaia valley, Southern Alps of New Zealand. Innermost LGM moraines at Big Ben have an age of 17,840 ± 240 yrs, whereas ice-marginal moraines or ice-molded bedrock surfaces at distances up-valley from Big Ben of 12.5 km (Lake Coleridge), ∼25 km (Castle Hill), ∼28 km (Double Hill), ∼43 km (Prospect Hill), and ∼58 km (Reischek knob) have ages of 17,020 ± 70 yrs, 17,100 ± 110 yrs, 16,960 ± 370 yrs, 16,250 ± 340 yrs, and 15,660 ± 160 yrs, respectively. These results indicate extensive recession of the Rakaia glacier, which we attribute primarily to the effects of climatic warming. In conjunction with geomorphological maps and a glaciological reconstruction for the Rakaia valley, we use our chronology to infer timing and magnitude of past atmospheric temperature changes. Compared to an overall temperature rise of ∼4.65 °C between the end of the LGM and the start of the Holocene, the glacier recession between ∼17,840 and ∼15,660 yrs ago is attributable to a net temperature increase of ∼4.0 °C (from −6.25 to −2.25 °C), accounting for ∼86% of the overall warming. Approximately 3.75 °C (∼70%) of the warming occurred between ∼17,840 and ∼16,250 yrs ago, with a further 0.75 °C (∼16%) increase between ∼16,250 and ∼15,660 yrs ago. A sustained southward shift of the Subtropical Front (STF) south of Australia between ∼17,800 and ∼16,000 yrs ago coincides with the warming over the Rakaia valley, and suggests a close link between Southern Ocean frontal boundary positions and southern mid-latitude climate. Most of the deglacial warming in the Southern Alps occurred during the early part of Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1) of the North Atlantic region. Because the STF is associated with the position of the westerly wind belt, our findings support the concept that a southward shift of Earthʼs wind belts accompanied the early part of HS1 cooling in the North Atlantic, leading to warming and deglaciation in southern middle latitudes.

The timing and magnitude of postglacial climatic changes around the globe provide insights into the underlying drivers of natural climate change. Using geomorphologic mapping of moraines, 10 Be surface-exposure dating, snowline reconstructions, and numerical modeling, we quantified glacier behavior during Late Glacial (15–11.5 ka) and Holocene (the past ∼11.5 k.y.) time in the Ben Ohau Range, New Zealand. Glaciers were more extensive during the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR), than subsequently, and the margins underwent a punctuated net withdrawal over the Holocene. Numerical modeling experiments that achieve the best fit to the moraines suggest that air temperature during the ACR was between 1.8 °C and 2.6 °C cooler than today, with similar (±20%) prescribed precipitation. After the ACR, a net snowline rise of ∼100 m through the Younger Dryas stadial (12.9–11.7 ka) was succeeded by a further "long-term," or net, rise of ∼100 m between ∼11 k.y. and ∼500 yr ago. Glacier snowline records in New Zealand show generally coherent Late Glacial and Holocene climate trends. However, the paleoclimate record in the southwest Pacific region shows important differences from that in the Northern Hemisphere.

Determining whether glaciers registered the classic Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ∼26,500–∼19,000 yrs ago) coevally between the hemispheres can help to discriminate among hypothesized drivers of ice-age climate. Here, we present a record of glacier behavior from the Southern Alps of New Zealand during the ‘local LGM’ (LLGM). We used 10 Be surface-exposure dating methods and detailed glacial geomorphologic mapping to produce a robust chronology of well-preserved terminal moraines deposited during the LLGM near Lake Ohau on central South Island. We then used a glaciological model to estimate a LLGM glacier snowline and atmospheric temperature from the Ohau glacier record. Seventy-three 10 Be surface-exposure ages place culminations of terminal moraine construction, and hence completions of glacier advances to positions outboard of present-day Lake Ohau, at 138,600 ± 10,600 yrs, 32,520 ± 970 yrs ago, 27,400 ± 1300 yrs ago, 22,510 ± 660 yrs ago, and 18,220 ± 500 yrs ago. Recessional moraines document glacier recession into the Lake Ohau trough by 17,690 ± 350 yrs ago. Exposure of an ice-molded bedrock bench located inboard of the innermost LLGM moraines by 17,380 ± 510 yrs ago indicates that the ice tongue had receded about 40% of its overall length by that time. Comparing our chronology with distances of retreat suggests that the Ohau glacier terminus receded at a mean net rate of about 77 m yr −1 and its surface lowered by 200 m between 17,690 and 17,380 yrs ago. A long-term continuation of ice retreat in the Ohau glacier catchment is implied by moraine records at the head of Irishman Stream valley, a tributary of the Ohau glacier valley. The Irishman Stream cirque glacier advanced to produce a set of Lateglacial moraines at 13,000 ± 500 yrs ago, implying that the cirque glacier was less extensive prior to that advance. We employed a glaciological model, fit to these mapped and dated LLGM moraines, to derive snowline elevations and temperature parameters from the Ohau glacier record. The modeling experiments indicate that a snowline lowering of 920 ± 50 m and temperature depression of 6.25 ± 0.5 °C below modern values allows for the Ohau glacier to grow to an equilibrium position within the LGM moraine belt. Taken together with a glaciological simulation reported from the Irishman Stream valley, snowlines and temperatures increased by at least ∼520 m and ∼3.6 °C, respectively, between ∼18,000 and ∼13,000 yrs ago. Climate parameters derived from the Ohau glacier reconstruction are similar to those derived from glacier records from Patagonia, to air temperature indicators from Antarctica, as well as to sea-surface temperature and stratification signatures of the Southern Ocean. We think that the best explanation for the observed southern LLGM is that southern winter duration modulated Southern Ocean sea ice, which in turn influenced Southern Ocean stratification and made the surface ocean cooler. Orbitally induced cooling of the Southern Ocean provides an explanation for the LLGM in the Southern Alps having been coincident with the northern LGM. We argue further that the global effect of North Atlantic stadials led to disturbance of Southern Ocean stratification, southward shifts of the subtropical front, and retreat of Southern Alps glaciers. Collapse of Southern Ocean stratification during Heinrich Stadial-1, along with attendant sea-surface warming, triggered the onset of the Last Glacial termination in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.

Resolving debated climate changes in the southern middle latitudes and potential teleconnections between southern temperate and polar latitudes during the last glacial-interglacial transition is required to help understand the cause of the termination of ice ages. Outlet glaciers of the Patagonian Ice Fields are primarily sensitive to atmospheric temperature and also precipitation, thus former ice margins record the extent and timing of past climate changes. 38 10 Be exposure ages from moraines show that outlet glaciers in Torres del Paine (51°S, south Patagonia, Chile) advanced during the time of the Antarctic cold reversal (ACR; ca. 14.6– 12.8 ka), reaching a maximum extent by ~14,200 ± 560 yr ago. The evidence here indicates that the South Patagonian Ice Field was responding to late glacial climate change distinctly earlier than the onset of the European Younger Dryas stadial (ca. 12.9 ka). Major glacier recession and deglaciation in the Torres del Paine region occurred by 12.5 ka and thus early in the Younger Dryas. We provide direct evidence for extensive ice in Patagonia at the very start of the ACR that agrees with atmospheric and marine records from the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. Atmospheric conditions responsible for the early late glacial expansion at Torres del Paine resulted from a climate reorganization that prompted a northern migration of the south westerly wind belt to the latitude of Torres del Paine at the onset of the ACR chronozone.

When calculated with the commonly accepted average Northern Hemisphere production rate, 10 Be dates of surface boulders on moraines in the Lago Argentino area of Patagonia are younger than minimum-limiting 14 C ages for the same landforms. This disagreement could result from the lack of a regional 10 Be production-rate calibration site. To assess this possibility, we here present high-precision measurements of 10 Be in samples collected from surface boulders on the Herminita and Puerto Bandera moraine complexes deposited alongside Lago Argentino on the eastern flank of the Andes at 50°S in Patagonia. Together with maximum- and minimum-limiting 14 C ages for the two moraine systems, these measurements confine the local 10 Be production rate to between 3.60 and 3.82 atoms/g/yr (midpoint = 3.71 ± 0.11 atoms/g/yr) when using a time-dependent scaling method that incorporates a high-resolution geomagnetic model. This range includes upper and lower error bounds of acceptable production rates derived from both the Herminita and the Puerto Bandera sites. The upper limit of this range is more than 12% below the average Northern Hemisphere production rate, as calculated using the same scaling method, given in Balco et al. [Quat. Geochron 3 (2008) 174–195]. Other scaling models yield production rates with similarly large offsets from the Balco et al. (2008) rate. On the other hand, the range of acceptable production rate values determined from Patagonia overlaps at 1σ with, and encompasses, the production rate recently derived in Macaulay valley in the Southern Alps of New Zealand [A. Putnam et al., Quat. Geochron. 5 (2010a) 392–409]. Within uncertainties (i.e., overlap at 1 sigma) this Patagonian production rate range also agrees with a recently determined production rate from low-elevation sites in northeastern North America and northern Norway. When the Macaulay production rate is used to calculate Patagonian exposure dates, 14 C and 10 Be chronologies are mutually compatible for late-glacial moraine systems. Both chronologies then indicate that outlet glaciers of the Southern Patagonian Icefield achieved a late-glacial maximum in the western reaches of Lago Argentino at 13,000 cal. yr BP at the end of the Antarctic Cold Reversal (14,500–12,900 cal. yr BP). Outlet glaciers subsequently receded to near present-day ice margins during the Younger Dryas stadial (12,900–11,700 cal. yr BP). This general retreat was interrupted about 12,200 cal. yr BP when Upsala Glacier constructed an interlobate complex of moraine ridges on Herminita Peninsula. Mountain glaciers in Patagonia and New Zealand, on both sides of the South Pacific Ocean, exhibited a coherent pattern of late-glacial ice-margin fluctuations.

The geographic extent of cooling associated with the Antarctic Cold Reversal is unclear. Dating of glacial moraines in New Zealand suggests that the cooling extended into the southern mid-latitudes, possibly as a result of the northward migration of the southern subtropical front.

The Younger Dryas — a period of sudden cooling in the Northern Hemisphere about 12,900 years ago — is perhaps the best-known example of abrupt climate change. But the global extent of the Younger Dryas is a topic of intense debate, particularly in the record of glacial behaviour in New Zealand. A new reconstruction of the growth and retreat patterns of glaciers in the Southern Alps in New Zealand at the time of the Younger Dryas supports the suggestion that temperature reductions in the north caused warming and glacial retreat in the Southern Hemisphere through a series of climate feedbacks. The Younger Dryas — during which Northern Hemisphere temperatures cooled drastically in just a few years — is perhaps the best-known example of abrupt climate change, but its global extent is under debate, particularly in the record of glacial behaviour in New Zealand. These authors present evidence for glacial retreat in New Zealand during the Younger Dryas, supporting the hypothesis that Northern Hemisphere climate changes caused Southern Hemisphere warming through a series of climate feedbacks. Millennial-scale cold reversals in the high latitudes of both hemispheres interrupted the last transition from full glacial to interglacial climate conditions. The presence of the Younger Dryas stadial (∼12.9 to ∼11.7 kyr ago) is established throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere, but the global timing, nature and extent of the event are not well established. Evidence in mid to low latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere, in particular, has remained perplexing1,2,3,4,5,6. The debate has in part focused on the behaviour of mountain glaciers in New Zealand, where previous research has found equivocal evidence for the precise timing of increased or reduced ice extent1,2,3. The interhemispheric behaviour of the climate system during the Younger Dryas thus remains an open question, fundamentally limiting our ability to formulate realistic models of global climate dynamics for this time period. Here we show that New Zealand’s glaciers retreated after ∼13 kyr bp, at the onset of the Younger Dryas, and in general over the subsequent ∼1.5-kyr period. Our evidence is based on detailed landform mapping, a high-precision 10Be chronology7 and reconstruction of former ice extents and snow lines from well-preserved cirque moraines. Our late-glacial glacier chronology matches climatic trends in Antarctica, Southern Ocean behaviour and variations in atmospheric CO2. The evidence points to a distinct warming of the southern mid-latitude atmosphere during the Younger Dryas and a close coupling between New Zealand’s cryosphere and southern high-latitude climate. These findings support the hypothesis that extensive winter sea ice and curtailed meridional ocean overturning in the North Atlantic led to a strong interhemispheric thermal gradient8 during late-glacial times, in turn leading to increased upwelling and CO2 release from the Southern Ocean9, thereby triggering Southern Hemisphere warming during the northern Younger Dryas.

We present a 10 Be production-rate calibration derived from an early Holocene debris-flow deposit at about 1000 m above sea level in the central Southern Alps, New Zealand, in the mid-latitude Southern Hemisphere. Ten radiocarbon ages on macrofossils from a soil horizon buried by the deposit date the deposit to 9690 ± 50 calendar years before AD2008. Surface 10 Be concentrations of seven large boulders partially embedded in the stable surface of the deposit are tightly distributed, yielding a standard deviation of ∼2%. Conversion of the 10 Be measurements to sea level/high-latitude values using each of five standard scaling methods indicates 10 Be production rates of 3.84 ± 0.08, 3.87 ± 0.08, 3.83 ± 0.08, 4.15 ± 0.09, and 3.74 ± 0.08 atoms g −1 a −1 , relative to the ‘07KNSTD’ 10 Be AMS standard, and including only the local time-integrated production-rate uncertainties. When including a sea level high-latitude scaling uncertainty the overall error is ∼2.5% (1 σ ) for each rate. To test the regional applicability of this production-rate calibration, we measured 10 Be concentrations in a set of nearby moraines deposited before 18 060 ± 200 years before AD2008. The 10 Be ages are only consistent with minimum-limiting 14 C age data when calculated using the new production rates. This also suggests that terrestrial in situ cosmogenic-nuclide production did not change significantly from Last Glacial Maximum to Holocene time in New Zealand. Our production rates agree well with those of a recent calibration study from northeastern North America, but are 12–14% lower than other commonly adopted values. The production-rate values presented here can be used elsewhere in New Zealand for rock surfaces exposed during or since the last glacial period.

Vive La Différence How closely do climate changes in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres resemble each other? Much discussion has concentrated on the Holocene, the warm period of the past 11,500 years in which we now live, which represents a baseline to which contemporary climate change can be compared. Schaefer et al. (p. 622 ; see the Perspective by Balco ) present a chronology of glacial movement over the last 7000 years in New Zealand, which they compare to similar records from the Northern Hemisphere. Clear differences are observed between the histories of glaciers in the opposing hemispheres, which may be owing to regional controls. Thus, neither of two popular arguments—that the hemispheres change in-phase or that they change in an anti-phased manner—appear to be correct.

The amplitude and timing of past glacier culminations are sensitive recorders of key climate events on a regional scale. Precisely dating young moraines using cosmogenic nuclides to investigate Holocene glacier chronologies has proven challenging, but progress in the high-sensitivity 10 Be technique has recently been shown to enable the precise dating of moraines as young as a few hundred years. In this study we use 10 Be moraine dating to reconstruct culminations of the Steingletscher, a small mountain glacier in the central Swiss Alps, throughout the Holocene. The outermost-recorded positions of Steingletscher most likely occurred in the Early Holocene and appear nearly synchronous with glacier culminations reported from other regions in the Alps. A Late-Holocene position corroborates the evidence for a significant glacier advance of similar extent to that of the Little Ice Age (LIA) ∼ 3 kyr ago. Finally, fourteen boulders from different moraines yield 10 Be ages between 580 and 140 years with analytical precisions mostly 10 % , dating Steingletscher advances during the LIA. Because these LIA 10 Be ages are in stratigraphic order, we tentatively distinguish four LIA glacier culminations: about 1470 CE, 1650 CE, 1750 CE and 1820 CE, which are in good agreement with existing independent records during the LIA in the Swiss Alps. These findings illustrate the high potential of the 10 Be moraine dating method to directly link paleo-glacier-chronologies to historical records and thus present-day glacier evolution.

Mountain glaciers worldwide have undergone net recession over the past century in response to atmospheric warming(1), but the extent to which this warming reflects natural versus anthropogenic climate change remains uncertain(2,3). Between about 11,500 years ago and the nineteenth century, progressive atmospheric cooling over the European Alps induced glacier expansion(2,4-6), culminating with several large-scale advances during the seventeen to nineteenth centuries(3). However, it is unclear whether this glacier behaviour reflects global or a more regional forcing. Here we reconstruct glacier fluctuations in the Southern Alps of New Zealand for the past 11,000 years using Be-10 exposure ages. We use those fluctuations to estimate the associated temperature variations. On orbital to submillennial timescales, changes in glacier snowlines in New Zealand were linked to regional climate and oceanographic variability and were asynchronous with snowline variations in European glaciers. We attribute this asynchrony to the migration of the intertropical convergence zone. In light of this persistent asynchrony, we suggest that the net glacier recession and atmospheric warming in both regions over the past century is anomalous in the context of earlier Holocene variability and corresponds with anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases.

In spring and summer, high iron concentrations in surface waters were associated with both cold and saline, recently upwelled waters, and with fresh, relatively warm water influenced by the Columbia River. Comparison of total dissolvable iron in 0.45 mm filtered and in unfiltered samples indicated a substantial contribution from particulate iron. Iron concentrations in summer were generally lower than in spring throughout the water column, with the exception of the near-bottom, where concentrations were generally higher in summer than spring. Optical backscatter data from moored sensors were used to infer the vertical and cross-shelf transport of iron-bearing particles during the upwelling season over a steep shelf. Cross-correlation analysis showed downslope movement of particles from the deep inner shelf to the deep midshelf. There was also evidence for sinking of biogenic particles at the midshelf and inner shelf, but we found no evidence of upslope transport of benthic particles. Sufficient iron is available in this system to meet the demands of the phytoplankton, which are able to make full use of available nitrate. Citation: Chase, Z., B. Hales, T. J. Cowles, R. International audience; Couplé au 10Be cosmogéniques in situ, le 14C produit au sein de quartz (14C in situ) offre du fait de sa courte demi-vie (5.7 ka) l’opportunité unique de déterminer des historiques d’exposition, simples ou complexes (incluant l’enfouissement et l’érosion), à des échelles temporelles jusqu’à ~20 ka. Cette échelle de temps est particulièrement importante dans le contexte des variations paléoclimatiques caractéristiques de l’interglaciaire actuel, « l’Holocène », qui a commencé il y a ~12 ka. Néanmoins, la mesure en routine de la concentration du 14C in situ est actuellement maitrisée par peu de laboratoires dans le monde, le principal défi consistant à extraire du quartz les quantités infimes du 14C in situ tout en les séparant du radiocarbone atmosphérique. Au CEREGE, la première ligne d’extraction 14C in situ en France est actuellement en train d’être mise au point quant à son niveau de blanc et de la reproductibilité des extractions et sera présentée dans cette exposée. Nous allons également présenter l’approche émergeante qui permet de déterminer les phases de retrait glaciaire au cours de l’holocène, à l’exemple de l’étude du Steingletscher (Alpes centrales, Suisse) (Schimmelpfennig et al., 2021). L’approche consiste à coupler les mesures des deux nucléides 14C in situ et 10Be produits dans le quartz du substrat rocheux récemment déglacé. Grâce à leurs demi-vies très différentes, les concentrations des deux nucléides évoluent différemment en fonction de la durée d’exposition, la durée d’enfouissement et de l’érosion subie par la surface rocheuse sous la glace. Ces mesures combinées permettent in fine de tenir compte des effets de l’érosion sur les concentrations des deux nucléides. Associés à la datation de moraines dans la marge glaciaires du Steingletscher (Schimmelpfennig et al., 2014), les résultats montrent que, suite à la déglaciation progressive au début de l’holocène, le glacier s’est retiré vers 10 ka et a gardé une extension similaire ou plus petite que celle de l’année 2000 pendant ~7 ka. Vers 3 ka, le glacier a avancé au-delà de son extension maximale du Petit Âge Glaciaire (PAG, 13e-19e siècle), puis jusqu’au 19e siècle il est principalement resté confiné entre son extensions du PAG et de l’année 2000.
