Aquest estudi consisteix en un anàlisi exploratori que té per objectiu principal la realització d'una reconstrucció de la temperatura de l'aigua i l'aire del llac Baikal durant els últims 40.000 anys. El treball s'ha dut a terme mitjançant l'ús de les proxys de reconstrucció de la temperatura y la utilització dels mètodes TEX86, MAAT, i la d'aportació de matèria orgànica d'origen terrestre, el BIT, aplicant-les a la mostra VER93-2 st GC-24, extreta pel Baikal Drilling Project a la conca central, amb l'objectiu de fer una aportació de dades paleoclimàtiques per tal d'aconseguir una millora en les interpretacions de futurs esdeveniments climàtics, i d'identificar esdeveniments climàtics sobtats, tals com els Heinrich events i els Youngers Dryas. Abans de la realització de l'anàlisi de les mostres s'ha dut a terme una extrapolació de l'edat en el testimoni, degut a que l'edat del core BDP VER93-2.st.GC-24 havia estat extrapolada fins a 277,5 cm de profunditat i en el present estudi s'ha ampliat l'anàlisi fins als 460 cm. de profunditat. Un cop obtinguts els resultats s'ha realitzat un càlcul de precisió i reproductibilitat per tal de conèixer una estimació quantitativa de la variabilitat de les dades obtingudes en les diferents proxys, en el qual ha estat demostrat una baixa variabilitat de les dades, exceptuant la variabilitat del TEX86 i la precisió del MAAT. Per a la localització dels diferents esdeveniments climàtics donats durant l'Holocè i el Plistocè s'han realitzat anàlisis gràfics dels propis resultats, juntament i en comparació dels resultats realitzats per Escala et al. (r.n.p [resultats no publicats]) en la conca sud, i de l'estudi publicat per Prokopenko et al., en el que s'analitza la presència de diatomees i matèria orgànica l'Atlàntic Nord. Els resultats integrats d'Escala et al.,(r.n.p) i els d'aquest estudi coincideixen en la datació dels diferents esdeveniments, amb alguna variació hipotèticament produïda per l'extrapolació d'edat realitzada en el present estudi i la gran aportació de matèria orgànica en el lloc d'extracció del testimoni per part del riu Selenga. Aquests resultats mostren una possible relació entre els esdeveniments climàtics i la variació de la temperatura de l'aigua. Este estudio consiste en un análisis exploratorio que tiene por objetivo principal la realización de una reconstrucción de la temperatura del agua y el aire del lago Baikal durante los últimos 40.000 años. El trabajo se ha llevado a cabo mediante el uso de proxys de reconstrucción de la temperatura y la utilización de los métodos TEX86, MAAT, y la de aportación de materia orgánica de origen terrestre, el BIT, aplicándose a la muestra VER93-2 st GC-24, extraída por Baikal Drilling Project en la cuenca central, con el objetivo de hacer una aportación de datos paleoclimáticos para conseguir una mejora en las interpretaciones de futuros eventos climáticos, y de identificar eventos climáticos repentinos, tales como los Heinrich Events y los Youngers Dryas. Antes de la realización del análisis de las muestras se ha llevado a cabo una extrapolación de la edad en el testimonio, debido a que la edad del core BDP VER93-2.st.GC-24 había sido extrapolada hasta 277,5 cm de profundidad y en el presente estudio se ha ampliado el análisis hasta los 460 cm. de profundidad. Una vez obtenidos los resultados se ha realizado un cálculo de precisión y reproducibilidad para conocer una estimación cuantitativa de la variabilidad de los datos obtenidos en las diferentes proxys, en el cual ha sido demostrado una baja variabilidad de los datos, exceptuando la variabilidad del TEX86 y la precisión del MAAT. Para la localización de los diferentes eventos climáticos dados durante el Holoceno y el Pleistoceno se han realizado análisis gráficos de los propios resultados, junto y en comparación de los resultados realizados por Escala et al. (rnp [resultados no publicados]) en la cuenca sur, y del estudio publicado por Prokopenko et al., en el que se analiza la presencia de diatomeas y materia orgánica del Atlántico Norte. Los resultados integrados de Escala et al., (rnp) y los de este estudio coinciden en la datación de los diferentes eventos, con alguna variación hipotéticamente producida por la extrapolación de edad realizada en el presente estudio y la gran aportación de materia orgánica en el lugar de extracción del testigo por parte del río Selenga. Estos resultados muestran una posible relación entre los eventos climáticos y la variación de la temperatura del agua. This study is an exploratory analysis so as to make a reconstruction of the water and air temperature in the Baikal lake during the latest 40.000 years, through temperature reconstruction proxies TEX86 and MAAT and the contribution of terrestrial organic materials, the BIT. The general objective of this project is to realize an exploratory study considering the VER93-2 st.GC-24 sampling testimony, extracted by the Baikal Drilling Project from the central basin, in order to contribute with paleoclimatic data so as to improve the interpretation of future climatic events and to identify sudden climatic events, as are Heinrich events and Youngers Dryas. Before analysing the samples we have made an age extrapolation since the age of the core BDP VER93-2.st.GC-24 was determined up to 277,5 cm depth and in this study the analysis has been made up to 460 cm depth. Once the results obtained I realized a precision and reproductibility calculation to get a quantitative estimation of the variability of the different proxies obtained data. A low variability of the data has been proved with the exception of TEX86 variability and MAAT precision. In order to locate the various Holocene and Pleistocene climatic events, graphic analysis of the results have been made, and at the same time the results have been compared with those of Escala et al. (n.p.r [non published results]) in the southern basin and a study published by Prokopenko et al., where it has been analysed the presence of diatomees and organic materials in the Northern Atlantic Ocean. The integrated results in Escala et al.'s and the ones of this study coincide in the dates of the different events, with some divergences produced, hypothetically, by the extrapolation of age assumed in this study and the huge apportation of organic material from the Selenga river in the location of samples extraction. The results show a possible relation between climatic events and temperature variation in the water temperature.

The alkenone unsaturation index, U37K', has now proven its worth as a tool for paleothermometry. U37K' measured in most modern sediments throughout the World Ocean can be translated using established calibrations into realistic, seemingly reliable estimates of mean annual temperature at the sea surface (SST). However, it remains mysterious why water temperature estimates based on this biotic index correspond to "mean annual" SST and whether such estimates apply back in geological time. Solving these mysteries is imperative and will require thoughtful, concerted research effort by the biological, chemical, and geological oceanographic community. This report summarizes what is now known about alkenones, in particular, their use in estimating the growth temperature of specific haptophyte algae that synthesize and export these compounds to the marine sediment record. It highlights future field and laboratory research directions that should be taken to clarify and bolster utility of alkenones as a generally valued paleoceanographic tool.

Unidad de excelencia María de Maeztu CEX2019-000940-M Marine primary productivity is the driving factor in the global marine carbon cycle. Its 31 reconstruction in past climates relies on biogeochemical proxies that are not considered to 32 provide an unequivocal signal. These are often based on the water column flux of biogenic 33 components to sediments (organic carbon, biogenic opal, biomarkers), although other factors 34 than productivity are posited to control the sedimentary contents of the components, and their flux 35 is related to the fraction of export production buried in sediments. Moreover, most flux proxies 36 have not been globally appraised. Here we assess for the first time a proxy to quantify past 37 phytoplankton biomass by correlating the concentration of C37 alkenones in a global suite of 38 core-top sediments with sea-surface chlorophyll-a (SSchla) estimates over the last 20 years. 39 SSchla is the central metric to calculate phytoplankton biomass and is directly related to primary 40 productivity. We show that the global spatial distribution of sedimentary alkenones is primarily 41 correlated to SSchla rather than diagenetic factors such as the oxygen concentration in bottom 42 waters, which challenges previous assumptions on the role of preservation on driving 43 concentrations of sedimentary organic compounds. Moreover, our results suggest that the rate of 44 global carbon export to sediments is not regionally constrained, and that alkenones producers 45 play a dominant role in the global export of carbon buried in the sea-floor. This study shows the 46 potential of using sedimentary alkenones to estimate past phytoplankton biomass, which in turn 47 can be used to infer past primary productivity (PP) in the global ocean.

Past surface ocean circulation changes associated with the mid-Pleistocene transition, 0.9-0.6 Ma, were reconstructed in the northern North Atlantic (ODP 983) and the northwest Pacific (ODP 882), using proxies for subarctic/subpolar water mass distributions (%C37:4 alkenone) and sea surface temperature (U37K). Both sites experienced a secular expansion of subarctic waters from ∼1.15 Ma, spanning both glacial and interglacial intervals. After 0.9 Ma, low %C37:4 at Site 983 records a northward retreat of subarctic waters during interglacials in the Atlantic, while continued high glacial %C37:4 indicate extensive subarctic waters during glacial maxima associated with the development of the larger late Pleistocene ice sheets. In contrast, a secular decline in %C37:4 occurred at Site 882 from 0.9 to 0.5 Ma, marking a more gradual retreat of subarctic conditions in the Pacific. It is proposed that the expansion of subarctic waters between 1.15 and 0.9 Ma exerted negative feedbacks to the moisture supply to the ice sheet source regions and may account for the apparent delayed ice sheet response to atmosphere-ocean circulation changes associated with the mid-Pleistocene transition that began as early as 1.2 Ma.
