We perform readout of a quantum-dot hybrid qubit coupled to a superconducting resonator through a parametric, longitudinal interaction mechanism. Superconducting cavities have emerged as a key tool for measuring the spin states of quantum dots. So far however, few experiments have explored longitudinal couplings between dots and cavities, and no solid-state qubit experiments have explicitly probed the "adiabatic" regime, where the Purcell decay is strongly suppressed. Here, we report measurements of a double-quantum-dot charge qubit coupled to a high-impedance resonator via a "flip-chip" design geometry. By applying an adiabatic ac drive to the qubit through two different channels, and studying the effects of qubit energy detuning, interdot tunneling, and driving strength, we are able to unequivocally confirm the presence of a longitudinal coupling between the qubit and cavity, while the qubit remains in its ground state. Since this coupling is proportional to the driving amplitude, and is therefore switchable, it has the potential to become a powerful new tool in qubit experiments., Comment: Main text and Supplementary Materials, 16 pages, 10 figures

Dynamical decoupling (DD) is a widely-used quantum control technique that takes advantage of temporal symmetries in order to partially suppress quantum errors without the need resource-intensive error detection and correction protocols. This and other open-loop error mitigation techniques are critical for quantum information processing in the era of Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum technology. However, despite its utility, dynamical decoupling does not address errors which occur at unstructured times during a circuit, including certain commonly-encountered noise mechanisms such as cross-talk and imperfectly calibrated control pulses. Here, we introduce and demonstrate an alternative technique - `quantum measurement emulation' (QME) - that effectively emulates the measurement of stabilizer operators via stochastic gate application, leading to a first-order insensitivity to coherent errors. The QME protocol enables error suppression based on the stabilizer code formalism without the need for costly measurements and feedback, and it is particularly well-suited to discrete coherent errors that are challenging for DD to address.

Spins in semiconductor quantum dots are a candidate for cryogenic quantum processors due to their exceptionally long coherence times. One major challenge to scaling quantum dot spin qubits is the dense wiring requirements, making it difficult to envision fabricating large arrays of nearest-neighbor-coupled qubits necessary for error correction. We describe a method to solve this problem by spacing the qubits out using high-impedance superconducting resonators with a 2D grid unit cell area of $0.16~\text{mm}^2$ using 3D integration. To prove the viability of this approach, we demonstrate 3D integration of a high-impedance TiN resonator coupled to a double quantum dot in a Si/SiGe heterostructure. Using the resonator as a dispersive gate sensor, we tune the device down to the single electron regime with an SNR = 5.36 limited by the resonator-dot capacitance. Characterization of the dot and resonator systems shows such integration can be done while maintaining low charge noise metrics for the quantum dots and with improved loaded quality factors for the superconducting resonator ($Q_L = 2.14 \times 10^4$), allowing for high-sensitivity charge detection and the potential for high fidelity 2-qubit gates. Developing a packaging scheme that meets all of the requirements for operation of solid-state qubits in a cryogenic environment can be a formidable challenge. In this article, we discuss work being done in our group as well as in the broader community, focusing on the role of 3D integration and packaging in quantum processing with solid-state qubits.

Analyzing a large data base of high-resolution three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of decaying rotating stratified flows, we show that anomalous mixing and dissipation, marked anisotropy, and strong intermittency are all observed simultaneously in an intermediate regime of parameters in which both waves and eddies interact nonlinearly. A critical behavior governed by the stratification occurs at Richardson numbers of order unity, and with the flow close to being in a state of instability. This confirms the central dynamical role, in rotating stratified turbulence, of large-scale intermittency, which occurs in the vertical velocity and temperature fluctuations, as an adjustment mechanism of the energy transfer in the presence of strong waves.

We briefly review helicity dynamics, inverse and bi-directional cascades in fluid and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, with an emphasis on the latter. The energy of a turbulent system, an invariant in the non-dissipative case, is transferred to small scales through nonlinear mode coupling. Fifty years ago, it was realized that, for a two-dimensional fluid, energy cascades instead to larger scales, and so does magnetic helicity in three-dimensional MHD. However, evidence obtained recently indicates that in fact, for a range of governing parameters, there are systems for which their ideal invariants can be transferred, with constant fluxes, to both the large scales and the small scales, as for MHD or rotating stratified flows, in the latter case including with quasi-geostrophic forcing. Such bi-directional, split, cascades directly affect the rate at which mixing and dissipation occur in these flows in which nonlinear eddies interact with fast waves with anisotropic dispersion laws, due for example to imposed rotation, stratification or uniform magnetic fields. The directions of cascades can be obtained in some cases through the use of phenomenological arguments, one of which we derive here following classical lines in the case of the inverse magnetic helicity cascade in electron MHD. With more highly-resolved data sets stemming from large laboratory experiments, high-performance computing and in-situ satellite observations, machine-learning tools are bringing novel perspectives to turbulence research, e.g. in helping devise new explicit sub-grid scale parameterizations, which may lead to enhanced physical insight, including in the future in the case of these new bi-directional cascades.

We investigate the large-scale intermittency of vertical velocity and temperature, and the mixing properties of stably stratified turbulent flows using both Lagrangian and Eulerian fields from direct numerical simulations, in a parameter space relevant for the atmosphere and the oceans. Over a range of Froude numbers of geophysical interest ($\approx 0.05-0.3$) we observe very large fluctuations of the vertical components of the velocity and the potential temperature, localized in space and time, with a sharp transition leading to non-Gaussian wings of the probability distribution functions. This behavior is captured by a simple model representing the competition between gravity waves on a fast time-scale and nonlinear steepening on a slower time-scale. The existence of a resonant regime characterized by enhanced large-scale intermittency, as understood within the framework of the proposed model, is then linked to the emergence of structures in the velocity and potential temperature fields, localized overturning and mixing. Finally, in the same regime we observe a linear scaling of the mixing efficiency with the Froude number and an increase of its value of roughly one order of magnitude.

We present a model for the scaling of mixing in weakly rotating stratified flows characterized by their Rossby, Froude and Reynolds numbers Ro, Fr, Re. It is based on quasi-equipartition between kinetic and potential modes, sub-dominant vertical velocity and lessening of the energy transfer to small scales as measured by the ratio rE of kinetic energy dissipation to its dimensional expression. We determine their domains of validity for a numerical study of the unforced Boussinesq equations mostly on grids of 10243 points, with Ro/Fr> 2.5 and with 1600< Re<1.9x104; the Prandtl number is one, initial conditions are either isotropic and at large scale for the velocity, and zero for the temperature {\theta}, or in geostrophic balance. Three regimes in Fr are observed: dominant waves, eddy-wave interactions and strong turbulence. A wave-turbulence balance for the transfer time leads to rE growing linearly with Fr in the intermediate regime, with a saturation at ~0.3 or more, depending on initial conditions for larger Froude numbers. The Ellison scale is also found to scale linearly with Fr, and the flux Richardson number Rf transitions for roughly the same parameter values as well. Putting together the 3 relationships of the model allows for the prediction of mixing efficiency scaling as Fr-2~RB-1 in the low and intermediate regimes, whereas for higher Fr, it scales as RB-1/2, as already observed: as turbulence strengthens, rE~1, the velocity is isotropic and smaller buoyancy fluxes altogether correspond to a decoupling of velocity and temperature fluctuations, the latter becoming passive.

As the field of superconducting quantum computing advances from the few-qubit stage to larger-scale processors, qubit addressability and extensibility will necessitate the use of 3D integration and packaging. While 3D integration is well-developed for commercial electronics, relatively little work has been performed to determine its compatibility with high-coherence solid-state qubits. Of particular concern, qubit coherence times can be suppressed by the requisite processing steps and close proximity of another chip. In this work, we use a flip-chip process to bond a chip with superconducting flux qubits to another chip containing structures for qubit readout and control. We demonstrate that high qubit coherence ($T_1$, $T_{2,\rm{echo}} > 20\,\mu$s) is maintained in a flip-chip geometry in the presence of galvanic, capacitive, and inductive coupling between the chips.

The scalable application of quantum information science will stand on reproducible and controllable high-coherence quantum bits (qubits). Here, we revisit the design and fabrication of the superconducting flux qubit, achieving a planar device with broad frequency tunability, strong anharmonicity, high reproducibility, and relaxation times in excess of $40\,\mu$s at its flux-insensitive point. Qubit relaxation times $T_1$ across 22 qubits are consistently matched with a single model involving resonator loss, ohmic charge noise, and 1/f flux noise, a noise source previously considered primarily in the context of dephasing. We furthermore demonstrate that qubit dephasing at the flux-insensitive point is dominated by residual thermal photons in the readout resonator. The resulting photon shot noise is mitigated using a dynamical decoupling protocol, resulting in $T_2\approx 85\,\mu$s, approximately the $2T_1$ limit. In addition to realizing an improved flux qubit, our results uniquely identify photon shot noise as limiting $T_2$ in contemporary qubits based on transverse qubit-resonator interaction.

We report results on rotating stratified turbulence in the absence of forcing, with large-scale isotropic initial conditions, using direct numerical simulations computed on grids of up to 4096^3 points. The Reynolds and Froude numbers are respectively equal to Re=5.4 x 10^4 and Fr=0.0242. The ratio of the Brunt-V\"ais\"al\"a to the inertial wave frequency, N/f, is taken to be equal to 4.95, a choice appropriate to model the dynamics of the southern abyssal ocean at mid latitudes. This gives a global buoyancy Reynolds number R_B=ReFr^2=32, a value sufficient for some isotropy to be recovered in the small scales beyond the Ozmidov scale, but still moderate enough that the intermediate scales where waves are prevalent are well resolved. We concentrate on the large-scale dynamics, for which we find a spectrum compatible with the Bolgiano-Obukhov scaling, and confirm that the Froude number based on a typical vertical length scale is of order unity, with strong gradients in the vertical. Two characteristic scales emerge from this computation, and are identified from sharp variations in the spectral distribution of either total energy or helicity. A spectral break is also observed at a scale at which the partition of energy between the kinetic and potential modes changes abruptly, and beyond which a Kolmogorov-like spectrum recovers. Large slanted layers are ubiquitous in the flow in the velocity and temperature fields, with local overturning events indicated by small Richardson numbers, and a small large-scale enhancement of energy directly attributable to the effect of rotation is also observed., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures (including compound figures)

We present results from direct numerical simulations of the Boussinesq equations in the presence of rotation and/or stratification, both in the vertical direction. The runs are forced isotropically and randomly at small scales and have spatial resolutions of up to $1024^3$ grid points and Reynolds numbers of $\approx 1000$. We first show that solutions with negative energy flux and inverse cascades develop in rotating turbulence, whether or not stratification is present. However, the purely stratified case is characterized instead by an early-time, highly anisotropic transfer to large scales with almost zero net isotropic energy flux. This is consistent with previous studies that observed the development of vertically sheared horizontal winds, although only at substantially later times. However, and unlike previous works, when sufficient scale separation is allowed between the forcing scale and the domain size, the total energy displays a perpendicular (horizontal) spectrum with power law behavior compatible with $\sim k_\perp^{-5/3}$, including in the absence of rotation. In this latter purely stratified case, such a spectrum is the result of a direct cascade of the energy contained in the large-scale horizontal wind, as is evidenced by a strong positive flux of energy in the parallel direction at all scales including the largest resolved scales.

A numerical study of decaying stably-stratified flows is performed. Relatively high stratification and moderate Reynolds numbers are considered, and a particular emphasis is placed on the role of helicity (velocity-vorticity correlations). The problem is tackled by integrating the Boussinesq equations in a periodic cubical domain using different initial conditions: a non-helical Taylor-Green (TG) flow, a fully helical Beltrami (ABC) flow, and random flows with a tunable helicity. We show that for stratified ABC flows helicity undergoes a substantially slower decay than for unstratified ABC flows. This fact is likely associated to the combined effect of stratification and large scale coherent structures. Indeed, when the latter are missing, as in random flows, helicity is rapidly destroyed by the onset of gravitational waves. A type of large-scale dissipative "cyclostrophic" balance can be invoked to explain this behavior. When helicity survives in the system it strongly affects the temporal energy decay and the energy distribution among Fourier modes. We discover in fact that the decay rate of energy for stratified helical flows is much slower than for stratified non-helical flows and can be considered with a phenomenological model in a way similar to what is done for unstratified rotating flows. We also show that helicity, when strong, has a measurable effect on the Fourier spectra, in particular at scales larger than the buoyancy scale for which it displays a rather flat scaling associated with vertical shear.

We investigate the ideal and incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in three space dimensions for the development of potentially singular structures. The methodology consists in implementing the four-fold symmetries of the Taylor-Green vortex generalized to MHD, leading to substantial computer time and memory savings at a given resolution; we also use a re-gridding method that allows for lower-resolution runs at early times, with no loss of spectral accuracy. One magnetic configuration is examined at an equivalent resolution of $6144^3$ points, and three different configurations on grids of $4096^3$ points. At the highest resolution, two different current and vorticity sheet systems are found to collide, producing two successive accelerations in the development of small scales. At the latest time, a convergence of magnetic field lines to the location of maximum current is probably leading locally to a strong bending and directional variability of such lines. A novel analytical method, based on sharp analysis inequalities, is used to assess the validity of the finite-time singularity scenario. This method allows one to rule out spurious singularities by evaluating the rate at which the logarithmic decrement of the analyticity-strip method goes to zero. The result is that the finite-time singularity scenario cannot be ruled out, and the singularity time could be somewhere between $t=2.33$ and $t=2.70.$ More robust conclusions will require higher resolution runs and grid-point interpolation measurements of maximum current and vorticity., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables; submitted to Physical Review E

We first summarize briefly several properties concerning the dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) turbulence, with an emphasis on the inverse cascade of energy to the largest accessible scale of the system. In order to study a similar phenomenon in three-dimensional (3D) turbulence undergoing strong solid-body rotation, we test a previously developed Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model against a high-resolution direct numerical simulation of rotating turbulence on a grid of $3072^3$ points. We then describe new numerical results on the inverse energy cascade in rotating flows using this LES model and contrast the case of 2D versus 3D forcing, as well as non-helical forcing (i.e., with weak overall alignment between velocity and vorticity) versus the fully helical Beltrami case, both for deterministic and random forcing. The different scaling of the inverse energy cascade can be attributed to the dimensionality of the forcing, with, in general, either a $k_{\perp}^{-3}$ or a $k_{\perp}^{-5/3}$ energy spectrum of slow modes at large scales, perpendicular referring to the direction of rotation. We finally invoke the role of shear in the case of a strongly anisotropic deterministic forcing, using the so-called ABC flow., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

We present numerical evidence of how three-dimensionalization occurs at small scale in rotating turbulence with Beltrami (ABC) forcing, creating helical flow. The Zeman scale $\ell_{\Omega}$ at which the inertial and eddy turn-over times are equal is more than one order of magnitude larger than the dissipation scale, with the relevant domains (large-scale inverse cascade of energy, dual regime in the direct cascade of energy $E$ and helicity $H$, and dissipation) each moderately resolved. These results stem from the analysis of a large direct numerical simulation on a grid of $3072^3$ points, with Rossby and Reynolds numbers respectively equal to 0.07 and $2.7\times 10^4$. At scales smaller than the forcing, a helical wave-modulated inertial law for the energy and helicity spectra is followed beyond $\ell_{\Omega}$ by Kolmogorov spectra for $E$ and $H$. Looking at the two-dimensional slow manifold, we also show that the helicity spectrum breaks down at $\ell_{\Omega}$, a clear sign of recovery of three-dimensionality in the small scales., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

We examine three--dimensional turbulent flows in the presence of solid-body rotation and helical forcing in the framework of stochastic Schramm-L\"owner evolution curves (SLE). The data stems from a run on a grid of $1536^3$ points, with Reynolds and Rossby numbers of respectively 5100 and 0.06. We average the parallel component of the vorticity in the direction parallel to that of rotation, and examine the resulting $<\omega_\textrm{z}>_\textrm{z}$ field for scaling properties of its zero-value contours. We find for the first time for three-dimensional fluid turbulence evidence of nodal curves being conformal invariant, belonging to a SLE class with associated Brownian diffusivity $\kappa=3.6\pm 0.1$. SLE behavior is related to the self-similarity of the direct cascade of energy to small scales in this flow, and to the partial bi-dimensionalization of the flow because of rotation. We recover the value of $\kappa$ with a heuristic argument and show that this value is consistent with several non-trivial SLE predictions., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRL

We present a study of spectral laws for helical turbulence in the presence of solid body rotation up to Reynolds numbers Re~1*10^5 and down to Rossby numbers Ro~3*10^-3. The forcing function is a fully helical flow that can also be viewed as mimicking the effect of atmospheric convective motions. We test in the helical case variants of a model developed previously (Baerenzung et al. 2008a) against direct numerical simulations (DNS), using data from a run on a grid of 15363 points; we also contrast its efficiency against a spectral Large Eddy Simulation (LES) (Chollet and Lesieur 1981) as well as an under-resolved DNS. The model including the contribution of helicity to the spectral eddy dissipation and eddy noise behaves best, allowing to recover statistical features of the flow. An exploration of parameter space is then performed beyond what is feasible today using DNS. At fixed Reynolds number, lowering the Rossby number leads to a regime of wave-mediated inertial helicity cascade to small scales. However, at fixed Rossby number, increasing the Reynolds number leads the system to be dominated by turbulent energy exchanges where the role of inertial waves is to weaken the direct cascade of energy while strengthening the large scales. We find that a useful parameter for partitioning the data is NC = ReRo = U2rms/[nu Omega], with Urms, nu and Omega the rms velocity, the viscosity and the rotation rate respectively. The parameter that determines how much the energy cascade is direct or inverse in which case the cascade to small scales is predominantly that of helicity is linked to Ro., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Using computations of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence with a Taylor-Green flow, whose inherent time-independent symmetries are implemented numerically, and in the absence of either a forcing function or an imposed uniform magnetic field, we show that three different inertial ranges for the energy spectrum may emerge for three different initial magnetic fields, the selecting parameter being the ratio of the Alfven to the eddy turnover time. Equivalent computational grids range from 128^3 to 2048^3 points with a unit magnetic Prandtl number and a Taylor Reynolds number of up to 1500 at the peak of dissipation. We also show convergence of our results with Reynolds number. Our study is consistent with previous findings of a variety of energy spectra in MHD turbulence by studies performed in the presence of both a forcing term with a given correlation time and a strong, uniform magnetic field. In contrast to the previous studies, however, the ratio of characteristic time scales here can only be ascribed to the intrinsic nonlinear dynamics of the flows under study., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figs, 2 tables

We study decaying magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) turbulence stemming from the evolution of the Taylor-Green (TG) flow generalized recently to MHD, with equal viscosity and magnetic resistivity and up to equivalent grid resolutions of 2048^3 points. A pseudo-spectral code is used in which the symmetries of the velocity and magnetic fields have been implemented, allowing for sizable savings in both computer time and usage of memory at a given Reynolds number. The flow is non-helical, and at initial time the kinetic and magnetic energies are taken to be equal and concentrated in the large scales. After testing the validity of the method on grids of 512^3 points, we analyze the data on the large grids up to Taylor Reynolds numbers of ~2200. We find that the global temporal evolution is accelerated in MHD, compared to the corresponding neutral fluid case. We also observe an interval of time when such configurations have quasi-constant total dissipation, time during which statistical properties are determined after averaging over of the order of two turn-over times. A weak turbulence spectrum obtains which is also given in terms of its anisotropic components. Finally, we contrast the development of small-scale eddies with two other initial conditions for the magnetic field and briefly discuss the structures that develop, and which display a complex array of current and vorticity sheets with clear rolling-up and folding., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. Quantum key distribution (QKD) has the potential for widespread real-world applications. To date no secure long-distance experiment has demonstrated the truly practical operation needed to move QKD from the laboratory to the real world due largely to limitations in synchronization and poor detector performance. Here we report results obtained using a fully automated, robust QKD system based on the Bennett Brassard 1984 protocol (BB84) with low-noise superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) and decoy levels. Secret key is produced with unconditional security over a record 144.3 km of optical fibre, an increase of more than a factor of five compared to the previous record for unconditionally secure key generation in a practical QKD system., Comment: 9 pages

We propose two sets of initial conditions for magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in which both the velocity and the magnetic fields have spatial symmetries that are preserved by the dynamical equations as the system evolves. When implemented numerically they allow for substantial savings in CPU time and memory storage requirements for a given resolved scale separation. Basic properties of these Taylor-Green flows generalized to MHD are given, and the ideal non-dissipative case is studied up to the equivalent of 2048^3 grid points for one of these flows. The temporal evolution of the logarithmic decrements, delta, of the energy spectrum remains exponential at the highest spatial resolution considered, for which an acceleration is observed briefly before the grid resolution is reached. Up to the end of the exponential decay of delta, the behavior is consistent with a regular flow with no appearance of a singularity. The subsequent short acceleration in the formation of small magnetic scales can be associated with a near collision of two current sheets driven together by magnetic pressure. It leads to strong gradients with a fast rotation of the direction of the magnetic field, a feature also observed in the solar wind., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

A recently developed spectral-element adaptive refinement incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code [Rosenberg, Fournier, Fischer, Pouquet, J. Comp. Phys. 215, 59-80 (2006)] is applied to simulate the problem of MHD island coalescence instability (MICI) in two dimensions. MICI is a fundamental MHD process that can produce sharp current layers and subsequent reconnection and heating in a high-Lundquist number plasma such as the solar corona [Ng and Bhattacharjee, Phys. Plasmas, 5, 4028 (1998)]. Due to the formation of thin current layers, it is highly desirable to use adaptively or statically refined grids to resolve them, and to maintain accuracy at the same time. The output of the spectral-element static adaptive refinement simulations are compared with simulations using a finite difference method on the same refinement grids, and both methods are compared to pseudo-spectral simulations with uniform grids as baselines. It is shown that with the statically refined grids roughly scaling linearly with effective resolution, spectral element runs can maintain accuracy significantly higher than that of the finite difference runs, in some cases achieving close to full spectral accuracy., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Astrophys. We examine the effect of accuracy of high-order spectral element methods, with or without adaptive mesh refinement (AMR), in the context of a classical configuration of magnetic reconnection in two space dimensions, the so-called Orszag-Tang vortex made up of a magnetic X-point centered on a stagnation point of the velocity. A recently developed spectral-element adaptive refinement incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code is applied to simulate this problem. The MHD solver is explicit, and uses the Elsasser formulation on high-order elements. It automatically takes advantage of the adaptive grid mechanics that have been described elsewhere in the fluid context [Rosenberg, Fournier, Fischer, Pouquet, J. Comp. Phys. 215, 59-80 (2006)]; the code allows both statically refined and dynamically refined grids. Tests of the algorithm using analytic solutions are described, and comparisons of the Orszag-Tang solutions with pseudo-spectral computations are performed. We demonstrate for moderate Reynolds numbers that the algorithms using both static and refined grids reproduce the pseudo--spectral solutions quite well. We show that low-order truncation--even with a comparable number of global degrees of freedom--fails to correctly model some strong (sup--norm) quantities in this problem, even though it satisfies adequately the weak (integrated) balance diagnostics., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. Use of low-noise detectors can both increase the secret bit rate of long-distance quantum key distribution (QKD) and dramatically extend the length of a fibre optic link over which secure key can be distributed. Previous work has demonstrated use of ultra-low-noise transition-edge sensors (TESs) in a QKD system with transmission over 50 km. In this work, we demonstrate the potential of the TESs by successfully generating error-corrected, privacy-amplified key over 148.7 km of dark optical fibre at a mean photon number mu = 0.1, or 184.6 km of dark optical fibre at a mean photon number of 0.5. At temperatures below 1 K, the capacitance of a glass sample changes due to the application of a DC field in accordance with A. Burins dipole gap theory. However, we now report that below 20 mK, during the first sweep cycle of the DC electric field the capacitance is smaller by about $10^{-5}$ compared to any subsequent sweep. Despite this overall shift the field dependence follows the dipole gap predictions. In a subsequent sweep to higher DC fields the dielectric constant drops by about $10^{-5}$ as soon as the applied field is higher than any field previously applied. After a strong electric bias field was applied to a glass sample at temperatures in the millikelvin range its AC-dielectric constant increases and then decays logarithmically with time. For the polyester glass mylar we have observed the relaxation of the dielectric constant back to its initial value for several temperatures and histories of the bias field. Starting from the dipole gap theory we have developed a model suggesting that the change of the dielectric constant after transient application of a bias field is only partly due to relaxational processes. In addition, non-adiabatic driving of tunneling states (TSs) by applied electric fields causes long lasting changes in the dielectric constant.
