Abstract

This paper presents a highly sensitive, energy efficient, and low-cost distributed methane (CH4) sensor system (DMSS) for continuous monitoring, detection, and localization of CH4 leaks in natural gas infrastructure, such as transmission and distribution pipelines, wells, and production pads. The CH4 sensing element, a key component of the DMSS, consists of a metal-oxide nanocrystal functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube mesh, which, in comparison with the existing literature, shows stronger relative resistance change while interacting with lower parts per million concentration of CH4. A Gaussian plume triangulation algorithm has been developed for the DMSS. Given a geometric model of the surrounding environment, the algorithm can precisely detect and localize a CH4 leak as well as estimate its mass emission rate. A UV-based surface recovery technique making the sensor recover ten times faster than the reported ones is presented for the DMSS. A control algorithm based on the UV-accelerated recovery is developed, which facilitates faster leak detection.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel atomic layer deposition (ALD) based ZnO functionalization of surface pretreated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for highly sensitive methane chemoresistive sensors. The temperature optimization of the ALD process leads to enhanced ZnO nanoparticle functionalization and improvement in their crystalline quality as shown by energy dispersive x-ray and Raman spectroscopy. The behavior of ZnO-MWCNT sensors in presence of methane concentrations down to 2 ppm level has been compared with that of pristine MWCNTs demonstrating that ZnO functionalization is an essential factor behind the highly sensitive chemoresistive nature of the ZnO-MWCNT heterostructures. The sensor is currently being tested under a range of conditions that include potentially interfering gases and changes to relative humidity.

Abstract

We have engineered an antiferromagnetic domain wall by utilizing a magnetic frustration effect of a thin iron cap layer deposited on a chromium film. Through lithography and wet etching we selectively remove areas of the Fe cap layer to form a patterned ferromagnetic mask over the Cr film. Removing the Fe locally removes magnetic frustration in user-defined regions of the Cr film. We present x-ray microdiffraction microscopy results confirming the formation of a 90{\deg} spin-density wave propagation domain wall in Cr. This domain wall nucleates at the boundary defined by our Fe mask., Comment: submitted to APL

Abstract

The dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc of CaC6 has been determined as a function of hydrostatic pressure in both helium-loaded gas and diamond-anvil cells to 0.6 and 32 GPa, respectively. Following an initial increase at the rate +0.39(1) K/GPa, Tc drops abruptly from 15 K to 4 K at 10 GPa. Synchrotron x-ray measurements to 15 GPa point to a structural transition near 10 GPa from a rhombohedral to a higher symmetry phase.

Abstract

We report temperature- and magnetic field-dependent bulk muon spin rotation measurements in a c-axis oriented superconductor CaC6 in the mixed state. Using both a simple second moment analysis and the more precise analytical Ginzburg-Landau model, we obtained a field independent in-plane magnetic penetration depth {\lambda}ab (0) = 72(3) nm. The temperature dependencies of the normalized muon spin relaxation rate and of the normalized superfluid density result to be identical, and both are well represented by the clean limit BCS model with 2\Delta/kB Tc = 3.6(1), suggesting that CaC6 is a fully gapped BCS superconductor in the clean limit regime., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRB

We demonstrate a unique prospect for inducing anisotropic vortex pinning and manipulating the directional motion of vortices using the stripe domain patterns of a uniaxial magnetic film in a the superconducting/ferromagnetic hybrid. Abstract

We report on a resistance anomaly in disordered superconducting films containing arrays of irregularly distributed nanoscale holes. At high driving currents, peaks appear in the resistance as a function of temperature, with peak values up to 2% above the classic normal-state resistance. We attribute the observed resistance anomaly to dissipation-induced granularity which enhances the contributions from fluctuation-induced reduction of the density of states of the quasiparticles. The granular feature of a disordered superconducting film originates from the inhomogeneous temperature distribution caused by the variation of the local dissipation and/or heat transfer., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Applied Physics Letters

Abstract

Point-contact tunneling on CaC$_6$ crystals reproducibly reveals superconducting gaps, $\Delta$, of 2.3$\pm$0.2 meV which are $\sim$~40% larger than earlier reports. That puts CaC$_6$ into the class of very strong-coupled superconductors since 2$\Delta$/kT$_c\sim$~4.6. Thus soft Ca phonons will be primarily involved in the superconductivity, a conclusion that explains the large Ca isotope effect found recently for CaC$_6$. Consistency among superconductor-insulator-normal metal (SIN), SIS and Andreev reflection (SN) junctions reinforces the intrinsic nature of this result., Comment: 2nd version, 4 pages, 4 figures, re-submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract

We have measured the Ca isotope effect in the newly discovered superconductor CaC6. The isotope effect coefficient is 0.50(7). If one assumes that this material is a conventional electron-phonon coupled superconductor, this result shows that the superconductivity is dominated by coupling of the electrons by Ca phonon modes and that C phonons contribute very little. Thus, in contrast to MgB2, where phonons in the B layers are responsible for the superconductivity, in CaC6 the phonons are primarily modes of the intercalated Ca., Comment: 11 pages including 2 Figures

13. Magnetic circuit for Abrikosov vortices : Vortex motion in a periodic labyrinth of magnetic T and I-shaped elements under a superconducting film

Abstract

We explore tailored labyrinth-like vortex motion in a niobium film placed on top of periodic arrays of T and I -shaped permalloy elements by imaging the vortex distribution in magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the superconducting layer under different in-plane polarizations of the TI structure. At low temperatures, we observe pronounced meandering of vortex motion around the TI elements. Remarkably, vortices can easily penetrate the sample along the TI columns even though the average vortex pinning in the patterned area is larger than in a bare niobium film. Accordingly, at temperatures close to the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, the voltage-current curves in the patterned area show an earlier departure from the zero-resistivity state at small currents, followed by slower growth with increasing current as compared to the un-patterned film. We present a model based on magnetostatic interactions between magnetic charges at the edges of the polarized TI-elements and single magnetic charges of induced vortices to account for this behavior. We expect that similar magnetic structures imposing labyrinth-like vortex motion could be used for collective entanglement of vortices envisioned in quantum circuit operations.

Abstract

Metasurfaces offer a versatile platform for engineering the wavefront of light using nanostructures with subwavelength dimensions and hold great promise for dramatically miniaturizing conventional optical elements due to their small footprint and broad functionality. However, metasurfaces so far have been mainly demonstrated on bulky and planar substrates that are often orders of magnitude thicker than the metasurface itself. Conventional substrates not only nullify the reduced footprint advantage of metasurfaces, but also limit their application scenarios. The bulk substrate also determines the metasurface dielectric environment, with potentially undesired optical effects that undermine the optical performance. Here we develop a universal polymer-assisted transfer technique to tackle this challenge by decoupling the substrate employed on the fabrication of metasurfaces from that used for the target application. As an example, Huygens’ metasurfaces with 120 nm thickness in the visible range (532 nm) are demonstrated to be transferred onto a 100 nm thick freestanding SiNx membrane while maintaining excellent structural integrity and optical performance of diffraction-limited focusing. This transfer method not only enables the thinnest dielectric metalens to the best of our knowledge, but also opens up new opportunities in integrating cascaded and multilayer metasurfaces, as well as the heterogeneous integration with nonconventional substrates and various electronic/photonic devices.

Abstract

We report a pronounced peak effect in the magnetization of CoxNbSe2 single crystals with critical temperatures T-c ranging between 7.1 and 5.0 K, and MnxNbSe2 single crystals with critical temperatures down to 3.4 K. We correlate the peak effect in magnetization with the structure of the vortex lattice across the peak-effect region using scanning-tunneling microscopy. Magnetization measurements show that the amplitude of the peak effect in the case of CoxNbSe2 exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior as a function of the Co content, reaching a maximum for concentration of Co of about 0.4 at. % (corresponding to a T-c of 5.7 K) and after that gradually decreasing in amplitude with the increase in the Co content. The normalized value of the peak position H-p/H-c2 has weak dependence on Co concentration. In the case of MnxNbSe2 the features of the peak effect as a function of the Mn content are different and they can be understood in terms of strong pinning.
