One of the important factors in the success of True Seed of Shallot (TSS)-based shallot production is the right seeding technology. The study aimed to obtain appropriate nursery techniques for producing high-quality seedlings to increase shallot productivity. The experiment was conducted in Cirebon Regency, West Java, Indonesia, from May to October 2021, using a factorial randomized block design with three treatment factors and three replications. They consisted of shallot varieties (V) (Trisula, Bima, Lokananta, and Maserati); seedlings age (U) (45 and 60 days); and seedling population density (P) (5, 7.5, and 10 g m−2 of TSS). The results revealed that seedling performance was negatively correlated to the bulb yield and revenue cost ratio (R/C). The use of young seedlings enhanced bulb production and R/C ratio in all varieties but had varied effects on cluster alterations in Maserati, Bima, and Trisula varieties. Young Lokananta seedlings prepared in the nursery at a seed density of 7.5 g m−2 proved to be the best treatment to generate the highest bulb production (39.92 t ha−1) and the highest R/C (3.62). Farmers are expected to implement seedling preparation techniques using young seedlings and managing seed populations in diverse varieties to maximize bulb production and R/C.

Garlic is usually propagated asexually from the cloves. Clove as the propagation source for garlic has many weaknesses. Alternatively, bulbils could be used for the propagation. The aim of this study was to know the effect of temperature and time of vernalization from several clones of Indonesian garlic to bulbil production. This research was conducted at a farmer’s field at Banjarnegara, Central Java, Indonesia. The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Block Design with three factors: temperature of vernalization, i.e., 0, 5, and 10°C, duration of vernalization, i.e., 20, 40, and 60 days, and on 12 garlic varieties/clones (V1–V12). Cloves of garlic were vernalized in cold storage according to the treatments and then planted in the field. The results revealed that a temperature of 5°C and duration of 20 days of vernalization independently single factor increased the number of bulbils of V3. Bulbil variables of V4 and V7 were enhanced with vernalization at 0°C for 20 days, although it did not significantly differ from the control. Therefore, these clones do not need particular vernalization treatment in order to produce bulbils.

Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) are a vegetable crop that is the third most important carbohydrate food source in the world after rice and wheat. Potatoes growth and yield may be improved by applying plant growth regulators. This study purpose was to determine the outcome of several gibberellin plant growth regulator applications on the growth and yield of ‘Granola’ potato grown during the dry season. The study used a randomized completely block design with six factors, which were combinations of gibberellin (GA) doses and forms, namely: 1) liquid GA form with a dose of 0.1 ml.L-1, 2) liquid GA form with a dose of 0.2 ml.L-1, 3) liquid GA form with a dose of 0.4 ml.L-1, 4) powdered GA form with a dose of 0.01 g.L-1, 5) powdered GA form with a dose of 0.02 g.L-1, 6) powdered GA form with a dose of 0.04 g.L-1, and 7) Control (without GA application). All GA treatments, both liquid and powder, could increase tuber weight and yield per plot compared to the control plants. GA affects growth by increasing leaf area index, while plant height was not significantly affected. The treatment of 0.2 ml. L-1 liquid GA was the finest in producing the largest tuber size, tuber weight per plant, and tuber weight per plot. This treatment could increase the yield by 57.46% compared to ‘Granola’ that did not receive GA3 treatment. The results of this study can be used to improve potato tuber yield during the dry season.

Management of True Seed of Shallot (TSS) production is an important part of supporting Indonesia shallot seed availability. It should involve various parties such as governments, privates, and shallot farmers to guarantee TSS quality and quantity of TSS. The study aims to identify governments' and farmers' preferences toward TSS institutional model in Indonesia. The study was undertaken in East Java from March to August 2016. Twenty-eight respondents from around East Java were purposively selected. Four options of the institution model of shallot seed were offered. The data was analyzed using the Analytical Hierarchy Process. The result showed that the preferred institution model for TSS by the respondents was the first option. In the model, Indonesian Vegetables Research Institute provided the high quality of shallot bulb seed and produced TSS for Breeder Seed. Meanwhile, other Indonesian government seed bodies/private generated bulb seed for Breeder Seed. Then, the University/Assessment Institute of Agricultural Technology/private produced TSS and bulb seed for Foundation Seed.Furthermore, selected shallot breeders produced TSS and bulb seed for Stock Seed and Extension Seed. The model could solve shallot seed quality and quantity problems' as it engaged the competent institutions. Therefore, the model could be recommended for TSS production nationally.

True seed of shallot (TSS) can be an alternative source of shallot seeds. But the use of TSS in Indonesia is still limited because not many people produce TSS because of high input production. This research aimed to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of input saving TSS production technology packages. The research was carried out in Ciwidey district, Bandung Regency, West Java, Indonesia from June to October 2016. The research consisted of two factors arranged in a split plot with a randomized block design and eight replications. The main plot was technology packages, namely farmer, recommendation and input saving. The subplot was harvest time, which were 80, 90, and 100 weeks after planting. The observed variables were yield component and yield, soil status, climate data, and farming data. The technical data were analyzed by ANOVA test and continued using the Duncan test at a 95% confidence level. Farming data was analyzed by RC ratio. The results showed that input saving package did not meet seed standards with an RC ratio of 1.07. Savings input on TSS production in Indonesia were only possible by choosing the right location and planting time and must be followed by climate prediction.

The availability of qualified and sustainable seeds is one of the determinants of the success of shallot farming. One of the constraints factor in the supply of shallot seeds is the short storage period that is about 2-3 months. This study aims to determine the effect of varieties and seed storage period on growth and yield shallots. This research was conducted at Indonesian Vegetables Research Institute, Lembang, West Java, Indonesia. The study was designed using split plot design with four replications. The main plot was seed storage period for four months, five months and six months after harvest and the subplot was varieties, consisting of seven varieties that have been released, namely Bima Brebes, Katumi, Kuning, Pikatan, Trisula, Pancasona and Mentes. The results showed that the yield of wet bulbs per hectare of five-months-storage period bulb seeds was significantly higher than six months storage period for the varieties of Bima Brebes, Katumi, Kuning, Pikatan, Pancasona and Mentes. Five-months-storage period of shallot bulb seeds can still be used as a source of seeds for the varieties of Bima Brebes, Katumi, Kuning, Pikatan, Pancasona and Mentes.

Shallot can be propagated generatively in the form True Seed of Shallot (TSS). The research purpose was to study phytohormone and sown seed density's effect on growth, disease, and bulbs yield. The research was conducted at Indonesian Vegetables Research Institute (1,250 m asl), Lembang-West Java, from August 2017 until April 2018. The research used a factorial randomized completely block design with two factors repeated three times. The first factor was kind of phytohormone (A1 = BAP, A2 = NAA, A3 = GA3, A4 = control) and the second factor was the sown seed density (B1 = 5 g/m2, B2 = 7 g/m2, B3 = 9 g/m2). The result showed that: Phytohormone application did not affect germination and growth of TSS, living plant number, and bulb yield. The best-sown seed density to plant growth was 7 g seeds/m2. Elisa’s test result did not detect the viruses as seed-borne diseases such as SYSV, OYDV, or LYSV. The intensity of disease symptoms Alternaria porri (11%), Stemphylium vesicatorium, Colletotrichum gleosporiodes, and Peronospora destructor each (12%). In general, the most bulb yield was informed single cloves.

Chili has become a high-value economic commodity in Indonesia. Indonesian chili consumption is increasing every year. In order to fulfill the demand, chili commonly is planted on fertile land. Meanwhile, Indonesia has a vast less fertile land, such as the acid dry land that has not been utilized for a long time. This land can be utilized to plant chili. However, there are many challenges to be faced that need to be solved. The study aims to identify farmers' challenges on chili farming an acid dry land, viewed from social-economic aspects, natural conditions, biology, and land. The study was conducted from April to October 2016 in Pasir Madang, Sukajaya sub-district, Bogor, Indonesia. About 49 chili farmers were involved in the study. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results of the study showed that the farmers planted chili because it was profitable. Area for planting chili commonly less fertile/infertile. To solve the problem, farmers used manure and chemical fertilizers. Meanwhile, challenges faced by the chili farmers were pest and disease attacks. Other obstacles were capital, farmers' knowledge on chili cultivation, and choosing effective and efficient fungicides and insecticides to control the chili pests and diseases.

Limited agricultural land areas combined with increasing demands for food require breakthroughs in land use development using agroforestry systems. Intercropping root crops with trees could be an alternative for food production in forest areas. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott) farming on dry land within 12- and 42-year-old teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) forests to support local food security. The feasibility assessment took into account both productivity and socio-economic aspects. The agroforestry land productivity was measured using the land equivalent ratio (LER), and our analysis of the cocoyam farming within the teak stands was carried out using the revenue/cost ratio (R/C) at the demonstration plot scale. Furthermore, we also surveyed farmers' perceptions of the production of cocoyam for food security. The results showed that the R/C values of cocoyam tuber production in agroforestry systems were lower than 1. However, the production rates of cocoyam tubers in the 12-year-old teak stand (48.3% light intensity) and the 42-year-old teak stand (62.5% light intensity) were 2.64 and 2.76 tons/ha, respectively. The overall yields from the teak and cocoyam agroforestry systems were more profitable than those of the monoculture system, as indicated by the LER values of 1.61 and 1.85. Cocoyam production was socially acceptable (77% of respondents) as a smallholder subsistence agroforestry practice to meet food demand. Increasing cocoyam productivity in teak forests requires the adoption of agroforestry silvicultural technology to achieve food security for rural communities. To increase their farming production and income, farmers could apply intensive silvicultural practices. Governmental support that could be provided includes encouraging product diversification and providing assistance for the processing and marketing of cocoyam products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
