A new fern species, Polystichum neoacutidens (Dryopteridaceae), is described and illustrated from a limestone area in northeastern Thailand. It is distinguished from its closest relative, P. acutidens, by the color of petioles and rachises, density of petiole scales, and position of sori.

Bolbitis is a pantropical fern genus of Dryopteridaceae with ca. 80 species mainly in tropical Asia. Earlier studies confirmed the monophyly of Bolbitis when Mickelia is excluded and identified three major clades in Bolbitis. However, earlier studies are based on relatively small sampling and the majority of Asian species are not sampled. In this study, DNA sequences of three plastid markers of 169 accessions representing ca. 68 (85 % of total) species of Bolbitis in nine out of the 10 series recognized by Hennipman (1977), and 54 accessions representing the five remaining bolbitidoid genera are used to infer a global phylogeny with a focus on Asian species. The major results include: (1) Bolbitis is strongly supported as monophyletic; (2) species of Bolbitis are resolved into four major clades and their relationships are: the Malagasy/Mascarene clade is sister to the rest, followed by the African clade which is sister to the American clade + the Asian clade; (3) six well-supported subclades are identified in the most speciose Asian clade; (4) the free-veined Egenolfia is embedded in Bolbitis and is paraphyletic in relation to species with anastomosing venation; (5) three series sensu Hennipman (1977), B. ser. Alienae, B. ser. Egenolfianae, and B. ser. Heteroclitae, are paraphyletic or polyphyletic; (6) evolution of six morphological characters is analyzed and free venation is found to have evolved from anastomosing venation and reversed to free venation in Bolbitis; and (7) biogeographical implications are drawn and it is shown that a single recent dispersal from Asia resulted in continental disjunction of closely related ferns of Bolbitis between Africa and America.

Two new

As an ancient lineage of ferns, Ophioglossaceae are evolutionarily among the most fascinating because they have the highest chromosome count of any known organism as well as the presence of sporophores, subterranean gametophytes, eusporangiate sporangia without annuli, and endophytic fungi. Previous studies have produced conflicting results, identifyingsome lineages with unresolved relationships, and have paid much attention to the subfamily Botrychioideae. But the other species-rich subfamily, Ophioglossoideae, has remained largely understudied and only up to 12 accessions of Ophioglossoideae have been sampled. In this study, DNA sequences of seven plastid markers of 149 accessions (75 in Ophioglossoideae) representing approximately 82 species (approximately 74% of estimated species diversity sensu J. Syst. Evol., 2016, 54, 563) in the family, and two Marattiaceae and two Psilotaceae, are used to infer a phylogeny. Our major results include: (1) Ophioglossaceae are resolved as monophyletic with strong support, and so are all four subfamilies and genera sensu PPG I except Botrypus and Ophioglossum; (2) a new genus Sahashia is segregated from Botrypus so that the monophyly of Botrypus can be retained; (3) the monophyly of Ophioglossum in its current circumscription is uncertain in spite of our large character sampling; (4) there is substantial cryptic speciation in Ophioderma detected by our molecular and morphological study; (5) the recognition of Holubiella is advocated based on its morphology and its sister relationship with Sceptridium; and (6) a novel sister relationship between Botrychium and the JHS clade (Japanobotrychium + (Holubiella + Sceptridium)) is discovered.

“Dok Hin” is the Thai local name for Selaginella species that form rosettes. They commonly distributes in Siberia, Manchuria, southern China, Japan, the Philippines and Thailand. Morphology of Dok Hin is very resemble leading to misidentification. So, exactly number of species of Dok Hin in Thailand and their differences in morphological characteristics is not well understood. Thus, revision of morphological characters and phylogenetic confirmation of the taxonomic identification are needed. This study aims to examine morphological charateristics and phylogenetic patterns in eight populations of the Dok Hin in Northern Thailand. Morphology of Dok Hin from each populations was quantitatively examined using 15 vegetative and 6 reproductive characters meanwhile phylogenetic analyses was explored by DNA barcode ITS2. The results of the phylogenetic analysis revealed the existence of two species of Dok Hin, S. tamariscina and S. pulvinata. Selaginella tamariscina can be distinguished from S. pulvinata by its presence of a pseudotrunk above ground and ridges of dorsal leaves. On the other hand, the results of phylogenetic analysis indicated the differences among populations of S. pulvinata as well. Chiang Mai populations of S. pulvinata was characterized by peculiar set of characters long leaves and leaf apices look like caudate, while the rest of their populations have shorter leaves and leaf apices look like aristate. It indicates that S. pulvinata has genetic and phenotypic divergence among populations. However, additional studies of Dok Hin populations in other parts of Thailand and studies on different genetic markers are necessary to confirm the taxonomic status of S. pulvinata. Two new nor-lignans siamensinols A-B (1–2) and seven known compounds agatharesinol (3), syringaresinol-glucoside (4), noreugenin (5), 8-methyleugenitol (6), melachromone (7), uncinoside A (8) and daucosterol (9) were isolated from Selaginella siamensis Hieron. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of comprehensive spectroscopic methods, including 1 D, 2 D-NMR, HR-ESI-MS and CD spectrometry. Compounds 1–2 showed moderate inhibitory effect on MOLT-3 cells while 8-methyleugenitol (6) exhibited moderate inhibitory effect on three tumor cells (HepG2, A549 and HuCCA-1). Compounds 2–3 showed the potent cancer chemoprevention in DPPH, XXO, IXO and AIA assays.

A new fern species, Diplazium thailandicum (Athyriaceae), is described. It was discovered from the North of Thailand. It is distinguished from the most similar species, D. chioui and D. lobatum, in having a pinnatisect base of the terminal pinna, 5–8 pairs of oblong lateral pinnae with stalk < 5 mm, and sori curved, 0.5–0.7 cm long, and borne half way between midribs and margins.

A new fern species, Hypodematium boonkerdii (Polypodiaceae subfamily Hypodematioideae), is described and illustrated from a limestone area in northeastern Thailand. It is distinguished from its closest relative, H. crenatum, by having a membranous lamina texture, sessile or subsessile pinnae and only one sorus per pinnule segment.

The sporophytes of Buxbaumia viridis are covered with a cuticle-like skin, which is peeling off when the capsules are ripe. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that the supposed peeling of the cuticle of ripe capsules is not restricted to the cuticle, but to the complete epidermis. Additionally the SEM investigations showed that the capsule epidermis is covered by epicuticular wax crystals in different morphologies. Wax crystal morphologies indicate the presence of massive wax layers with small embedded and superimposed platelets and granules on top. For bryophytes such wax crystals were so far reported only from the Polytrichales, but they are common wax types of various groups of several phanerogams. Based on these micro-morphological markers the phylogenetic relationship between the cuticles of moss sporophytes and tracheophytes is discussed here.

Seven species are reported to the bryoflora of Thailand for the first time, one hepatic (Aneura maxima) and six mosses (Bryum russulum, Campylopus flagelliferus, C. fragilis, C. laxitextus, Dicranodontium didyction and Pohlia leucostoma).
