In this poster we would like to present the new architecture and features of EVT 3 (Edition Visualization Technology), an open source Angular-based tool for the visualization of TEI-XML Digital Scholarly Editions. We will use and showcase two digital philology projects as test bed for the new functionalities.

Although EVT has slowly evolved into a versatile and powerful tool for publishing historical sources and literary texts on the basis of the XML/TEI format, none of the modifications - and periodic rewrites - of its code base has significantly changed the way in which edition data is handled. Even today, in fact, the main goal is to visualise and navigate such data, no doubt in a sophisticated way (support for multiple edition levels, support for named entities management, text-image linking), but in any case limited to what we might call “core functionalities” of a DSE. Texts encoded in XML/TEI, on the other hand, are a potential treasure trove of information just waiting to be interrogated and made available to the user. In this article I identify three use cases – the processing of special characters encoded by means of the and elements; the management of named entities, realia and other interesting elements of the text; the use of ontologies within an XML/TEI document – related to literary texts in Old English in order to propose a TEI encoding and a subsequent processing able to put the user in a position to receive answers to complex, transversal queries involving cross-links between different types of elements.

Current digital scholarly editions (DSEs) have the opportunity of evolving to dynamic objects interacting with other Internet-based resources thanks to open frameworks such as IIIF and LOD. This paper showcases and discusses two new functionalities of EVT (Edition Visualization Technology), version 2: one improving the management of named entities (f.i. personal names) through the use of LOD resources such as FOAF and DBpedia; the other, providing integration of the published text with digital images of the textual primary sources accessed from online repositories (e.g. e-codices or digital libraries such as the Vaticana or the Ambrosiana) via the IIIF protocol.

Per quanto EVT si sia pian piano evoluto in uno strumento versatile e potente per la pubblicazione di fonti e testi letterari sulla base del formato XML/TEI, nessuna delle modifiche – e periodiche riscritture – della sua base di codice ha cambiato significativamente il modo in cui vengono trattati i dati dell’edizione. Ancora oggi, infatti, l’obiettivo è quello di visualizzare e navigare tali dati, senza dubbio in maniera sofisticata (gestione dei livelli di edizione, delle named entities, del rapporto testo-immagine), ma limitandosi in ogni caso a queste che potremmo definire funzionalità di base per una DSE. I testi codificati in XML/TEI, viceversa, rappresentano un potenziale tesoro di informazioni che attende solo di essere interrogato e messo a disposizione dell’utente. In questo articolo individuo tre casi d’uso – l’elaborazione dei dati relativi ai caratteri speciali inseriti per mezzo della e ; la gestione di named entities, realia e altri elementi del testo; l’uso di ontologie all’interno di un documento XML/TEI – relativi a testi letterari in inglese antico per proporre una codifica TEI e una successiva elaborazione che permetta all’utente di ricevere risposte a interrogazioni complesse, query trasversali che implicano collegamenti incrociati fra tipi diversi di elementi., Umanistica Digitale, No. 10 (2021)

A lecture discussing the "Good things" approach to small data humanities projects, the Visionary Cross Project, and new developments in Edition Visualisation Technology.

We discuss an approach to publishing heterogeneous file data and long-form humanities research as both linked open data and a (human readable) digital scholarly edition using Zenodo and Github. This approach is broadly generalisable and answers a number of long-standing issues surrounding the publication of data and results in DH: It promotes the discovery and long-term survival of published data and results with no requirement for future maintenance; It conforms to archival standards and principles; It is fully available for future extension, addition, excerption, reuse, repurposing, or reanalysis by others without negotiation; It ensures that data and contextual analysis are linked bi-directionally meaning that users are always able both to access the discrete data points from which a Humanities-focused analysis and commentary is build and understand each data point in the context of these larger synthetic research products. The present volume “Digital Scholarly Editions as Interfaces” is the follow-up publication of the same-titled symposium that was held in 2016 at the University of Graz and the twelfth volume of the publication series of the Institute for Documentology and Scholarly Editing (IDE). It is the result of a successful collaboration between members of the Centre for Information Modelling at the University of Graz, the Digital Scholarly Editions Initial Training Network DiXiT, a EC Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action, and the IDE. All articles have undergone a peer reviewing process and are published in Open Access. They document the current state of research on design, application and implications of both user and machine interfaces in the context of digital scholarly editions. The editors of the volume are grateful to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions for enabling not only the symposium in 2016 but also the publication of the present volume with their financial support. Edizione critica digitale del Codice Pelavicino, un manoscritto della fine del XIII secolo conservato presso l’Archivio Capitolare Lunense (Sarzana) e contenente diversi documenti tra cui il Liber Iurium della Chiesa di Luni. L'opera si compone di un insieme di testi di corredo, materiali di consultazione, le immagini del manoscritto e l’edizione critica vera e propria, ed è consultabile sul web grazie al software open source EVT. L’edizione digitale del codice consente lo studio del manoscritto senza richiedere la sua consultazione fisica e presenta tutte le caratteristiche – potenziate – di una tradizionale pubblicazione cartacea. Il sito che ne consente l’accesso è costruito per favorire la partecipazione di studiosi e appassionati al lavoro stesso di lettura e interpretazione dei documenti ivi trascritti., A digital critical edition of the Codice Pelavicino, a manuscript dating back to the end of the XIII century preserved in the Archivio Capitolare Lunense (Sarzana) and containing several documents, among which the Liber Iurium related to the Bishop of Luni. The edition includes several accessory texts, digitized images of the codex and the actual critical edition. The EVT open source software has been used to build the web-based edition. This digital edition of the manuscript allows to browse and study it without requiring physical access. It also presents all features of a traditional printed edition, enhanced thanks to the digital medium. The web site hosting the edition has been designed to foster participation and sharing of comments among all interested scholars and enthusiasts who intend to read and interpret the transcribed documents.
