Abstract

A sample of Roman glass found in Regio I, Insula 14, during the 1950’s Pompeii excavation was examined by Raman and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The analyzed specimen was selected based on its intense blue color and its well-preserved aspect. The purpose of the work was the chemical characterization of Pompeii’s glass in correlation to the actual knowledge of Roman glassmaking technology from the Mediterranean area. The results suggested that the Pompeii’s glass was a soda-lime-silica glass, but with a higher calcium content that, given the low content of lead, was used to stabilize the glass. The sample was in origin produced most likely as non-decolorized primary raw materials from eastern Mediterranean sites. Moreover, the intense blue color was related to the use mainly of cobalt, present in a weighty amount, and likely used as important coloring agents in the ancient secondary glass-making workshop.

Abstract

The knowledge on the material production from archaeological sites contains valuable information on the technological advances and on the commercial routes of a civilization. Archaeologists can face some ambiguities in the assessment of the productive function of furnaces emerging from excavation when archaeological markers are not available due to a poor conservation state. A protocol to discriminate among the production of lime and ceramics is the major aim of this work. Indeed, herein, we address the possibility to assist archaeologists by a vibrational spectroscopy‐based identification of furnace productive function using a proper sampling, particularly to discriminate between kiln for ceramics from calcara. The proposed analytical procedure supported by a geological survey of the area was established, defining also the application limits, by investigating four cases, one from the sanctuary of Hera at the mouth of river Sele (Paestum), two from Velia (Eastern and Southern quarters), and the fourth from Roscigno. Some care during sampling from furnaces and in the interpretation of possible interferences in Raman and FT‐IR spectra are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A crystal-chemistry survey on natural aluminium phosphates, carried out by combining EMPA micronalysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy, was performed starting from our studies on whiteite CaFeMgAl2(PO4)4(OH)2∙8H2O, augelite Al2(PO4)(OH)3, wardite NaAl3(PO4)2(OH)4∙2H2O, lazulite MgAl2(PO4)2(OH)2 and wavellite Al3(PO4)2(OH,F)3·5H2O, and extending the investigation to the most common Al phosphates phases. Main crystallographic features (bonds, angles, interactions) were examined according to the results of structural refinements, and the presence of networks of O-H…O hydrogen bonds with in the structures, based on the Libowitzky (1999) relationship, for the range of D-H...A bond systems in the structure, in order to compare results of OH frequencies from FTIR spectra with those observed by X-ray refinement.
