We show how to entangle the motion of optically levitated nanoparticles in distant optical tweezers. The scheme consists in coupling the inelastically scattered light of each particle into transmission lines and directing it towards the other particle. The interference between this light and the background field introduces an effective coupling between the two particles while simultaneously reducing the effect of recoil heating. We analyze the system dynamics, showing that both transient and conditional entanglement between remote particles can be achieved under realistic experimental conditions.

Every massive particle behaves like a wave, according to quantum physics. Yet, this characteristic wave nature has only been observed in double-slit experiments with microscopic systems, such as atoms and molecules. The key aspect is that the wavefunction describing the motion of these systems extends coherently over a distance comparable to the slit separation, much larger than the size of the system itself. Preparing these states of more massive and complex objects remains an outstanding challenge. While the motion of solid-state oscillators can now be controlled at the level of single quanta, their coherence length remains comparable to the zero-point motion, limited to subatomic distances. Here, we prepare a delocalized state of a levitating solid-state nanosphere with coherence length exceeding the zero-point motion. We first cool its motion to the ground state. Then, by modulating the stiffness of the confinement potential, we achieve more than a threefold increment of the initial coherence length with minimal added noise. Optical levitation gives us the necessary control over the confinement that other mechanical platforms lack. Our work is a stepping stone towards the generation of delocalization scales comparable to the object size, a crucial regime for macroscopic quantum experiments, and towards quantum-enhanced force sensing with levitated particles.

Levitated nanoparticles in vacuum are prime candidates for generating macroscopic quantum superposition states of massive objects. Most protocols for preparing these states necessitate coherent expansion beyond the scale of the zero-point motion to produce sufficiently delocalized and pure phase-space distributions. Here, we spatially expand and subsequently recontract the thermal state of a levitated nanoparticle by modifying the stiffness of the trap holding the particle. We achieve state-expansion factors of 25 in standard deviation for a particle initially feedback-cooled to a center-of-mass thermal state of \SI{155}{\milli\kelvin}. Our method relies on a hybrid scheme combining an optical trap, for cooling and measuring the particle's motion, with a Paul trap for expanding its state. Consequently, state expansion occurs devoid of measurement backaction from photon recoil, making this approach suitable for coherent wavefunction expansion in future experiments.

Generating macroscopic non-classical quantum states is a long-standing challenge in physics. Anharmonic dynamics is an essential ingredient to generate these states, but for large mechanical systems, the effect of the anharmonicity tends to become negligible compared to decoherence. As a possible solution to this challenge, we propose to use a motional squeezed state as a resource to effectively enhance the anharmonicity. We analyze the production of negativity in the Wigner distribution of a quantum anharmonic resonator initially in a squeezed state. We find that initial squeezing enhances the rate at which negativity is generated. We also analyze the effect of two common sources of decoherence, namely energy damping and dephasing, and find that the detrimental effects of energy damping are suppressed by strong squeezing. In the limit of large squeezing, which is needed for state-of-the-art systems, we find good approximations for the Wigner function. Our analysis is significant for current experiments attempting to prepare macroscopic mechanical systems in genuine quantum states. We provide an overview of several experimental platforms featuring nonlinear behaviors and low levels of decoherence. In particular, we discuss the feasibility of our proposal with carbon nanotubes and levitated nanoparticles.

We present a hybrid trapping platform that allows us to levitate a charged nanoparticle in high vacuum using either optical fields, radio-frequency fields, or a combination thereof. Our hybrid approach combines an optical dipole trap with a linear Paul trap while maintaining a large numerical aperture (0.77 NA). We detail a controlled transfer procedure that allows us to use the Paul trap as a safety net to recover particles lost from the optical trap at high vacuum. The presented hybrid platform adds to the toolbox of levitodynamics and represents an important step towards fully controllable dark potentials, providing control in the absence of decoherence due to photon recoil., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Supplying a piezoelectric transducer with constant voltage or constant power during a frequency sweep can lead to different results in the determination of the acoustofluidic resonance frequencies, which are observed when studying the acoustophoretic displacements and velocities of particles suspended in a liquid-filled microchannel. In this work, three cases are considered: (1) Constant input voltage into the power amplifier, (2) constant voltage across the piezoelectric transducer, and (3) constant average power dissipation in the transducer. For each case, the measured and the simulated responses are compared, and good agreement is obtained. It is shown that Case 1, the simplest and most frequently used approach, is largely affected by the impedance of the used amplifier and wiring, so it is therefore not suitable for a reproducible characterization of the intrinsic properties of the acoustofluidic device. Case 2 strongly favors resonances at frequencies yielding the lowest impedance of the piezoelectric transducer, so small details in the acoustic response at frequencies far from the transducer resonance can easily be missed. Coherence has been used as a resource for optical communications since its earliest days. It is widely used for multiplexing of data, but not for encoding of data. Here we introduce a coding scheme, which we call \textit{mutual coherence coding}, to encode information in the mutual coherence of spatially separated light beams. We describe its implementation and analyze its performance by deriving the relevant figures of merit (signal-to-noise ratio, maximum bit-rate, and spectral efficiency) with respect to the number of transmitted beams. Mutual coherence coding yields a quadratic scaling of the number of transmitted signals with the number of employed light beams, which might have benefits for cryptography and data security.

In recent years, pangenomes received increasing attention from the scientific community for their ability to incorporate population variation information and alleviate reference genome bias. Maximal Exact Matches (MEMs) and Maximal Unique Matches (MUMs) have proven themselves to be useful in multiple bioinformatic contexts, for example short-read alignment and multiple-genome alignment. However, standard techniques using suffix trees and FM-indexes do not scale to a pangenomic level. Recently, Gagie et al. [JACM 20] introduced the $r$-index that is a Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT)-based index able to handle hundreds of human genomes. Later, Rossi et al. [JCB 22] enabled the computation of MEMs using the $r$-index, and Boucher et al. [DCC 21] showed how to compute them in a streaming fashion. In this paper, we show how to augment Boucher et al.'s approach to enable the computation of MUMs on the $r$-index, while preserving the space and time bounds. We add additional $O(r)$ samples of the longest common prefix (LCP) array, where $r$ is the number of equal-letter runs of the BWT, that permits the computation of the second longest match of the pattern suffix with respect to the input text, which in turn allows the computation of candidate MUMs. We implemented a proof-of-concept of our approach, that we call mum-phinder, and tested on real-world datasets. We compared our approach with competing methods that are able to compute MUMs. We observe that our method is up to 8 times smaller, while up to 19 times slower when the dataset is not highly repetitive, while on highly repetitive data, our method is up to 6.5 times slower and uses up to 25 times less memory., Comment: Our code is available at: https://github.com/saragiuliani/mum-phinder

A mechanically compliant element can be set into motion by the interaction with light. In turn, this light-driven motion can give rise to ponderomotive correlations in the electromagnetic field. In optomechanical systems, cavities are often employed to enhance these correlations up to the point where they generate quantum squeezing of light. In free-space scenarios, where no cavity is used, observation of squeezing remains possible but challenging due to the weakness of the interaction, and has not been reported so far. Here, we measure the ponderomotively squeezed state of light scattered by a nanoparticle levitated in a free-space optical tweezer. We observe a reduction of the optical fluctuations by up to $25$~\% below the vacuum level, in a bandwidth of about $15$~kHz. Our results are well explained by a linearized dipole interaction between the nanoparticle and the electromagnetic continuum. These ponderomotive correlations open the door to quantum-enhanced sensing and metrology with levitated systems, such as force measurements below the standard quantum limit.

Until recently, most experts would probably have agreed we cannot backwards-step in constant time with a run-length compressed Burrows-Wheeler Transform (RLBWT), since doing so relies on rank queries on sparse bitvectors and those inherit lower bounds from predecessor queries. At ICALP '21, however, Nishimoto and Tabei described a new, simple and constant-time implementation. For a permutation $\pi$, it stores an $O (r)$-space table -- where $r$ is the number of positions $i$ where either $i = 0$ or $\pi (i + 1) \neq \pi (i) + 1$ -- that enables the computation of successive values of $\pi(i)$ by table look-ups and linear scans. Nishimoto and Tabei showed how to increase the number of rows in the table to bound the length of the linear scans such that the query time for computing $\pi(i)$ is constant while maintaining $O (r)$-space. In this paper we refine Nishimoto and Tabei's approach, including a time-space tradeoff, and experimentally evaluate different implementations demonstrating the practicality of part of their result. We show that even without adding rows to the table, in practice we almost always scan only a few entries during queries. We propose a decomposition scheme of the permutation $\pi$ corresponding to the LF-mapping that allows an improved compression of the data structure, while limiting the query time. We tested our implementation on real-world genomic datasets and found that without compression of the table, backward-stepping is drastically faster than with sparse bitvector implementations but, unfortunately, also uses drastically more space. Control over optical spatial coherence is a key requirement in diverse applications including imaging, optical trapping, and communications. Current approaches to controlling spatial coherence are constrained by speed or limited to a single pair of optical fields. Here, we propose a method to achieve single-shot control of the spatial coherence between an arbitrary number of fields. Our method employs a multi-port linear optical device, which we realize by shaping the wavefront of the input light fields and transmitting them through a complex medium. To demonstrate the capabilities of our method, we experimentally realize a 3x3-port system and use it to generate three output beams with desired mutual correlations., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

Mantaci et al. [TCS 2007] defined the eBWT to extend the definition of the BWT to a collection of strings, however, since this introduction, it has been used more generally to describe any BWT of a collection of strings and the fundamental property of the original definition (i.e., the independence from the input order) is frequently disregarded. In this paper, we propose a simple linear-time algorithm for the construction of the original eBWT, which does not require the preprocessing of Bannai et al. [CPM 2021]. As a byproduct, we obtain the first linear-time algorithm for computing the BWT of a single string that uses neither an end-of-string symbol nor Lyndon rotations. We combine our new eBWT construction with a variation of prefix-free parsing to allow for scalable construction of the eBWT. We evaluate our algorithm (pfpebwt) on sets of human chromosomes 19, Salmonella, and SARS-CoV2 genomes, and demonstrate that it is the fastest method for all collections, with a maximum speedup of 7.6x on the second best method. The peak memory is at most 2x larger than the second best method. Comparing with methods that are also, as our algorithm, able to report suffix array samples, we obtain a 57.1x improvement in peak memory. The dynamics of wetting and dewetting is largely determined by the velocity field near the contact lines. For water drops it has been observed that adding surfactant decreases the dynamic receding contact angle even at a concentration much lower than the critical micelle concentration (CMC). To better understand why surfactants have such a drastic effect on drop dynamics, we constructed a dedicated a setup on an inverted microscope, in which an aqueous drop is held stationary while the transparent substrate is moved horizontally. Using astigmatism particle tracking velocimetry, we track the 3D displacement of the tracer particles in the flow. We study how surfactants alter the flow dynamics near the receding contact line of a moving drop for capillary numbers in the order of $10^{-6}$. Even for surfactant concentrations $c$ far below the critical micelle concentration ($c \ll$ CMC) Marangoni stresses change the flow drastically. We discuss our results first in a 2D model that considers advective and diffusive surfactant transport and deduce estimates of the magnitude and scaling of the Marangoni stress from this. Modeling and experiment agree that a tiny gradient in surface tension of a few $\mu N \, m^{-1}$ is enough to alter the flow profile significantly. The variation of the Marangoni stress with the distance from the contact line suggests that the 2D advection-diffusion model has to be extended to a full 3D model. Tests of quantum mechanics on a macroscopic scale require extreme control over mechanical motion and its decoherence. Quantum control of mechanical motion has been achieved by engineering the radiation-pressure coupling between a micromechanical oscillator and the electromagnetic field in a resonator. Furthermore, measurement-based feedback control relying on cavity-enhanced detection schemes has been used to cool micromechanical oscillators to their quantum ground states. In contrast to mechanically tethered systems, optically levitated nanoparticles are particularly promising candidates for matter-wave experiments with massive objects, since their trapping potential is fully controllable. In this work, we optically levitate a femto-gram dielectric particle in cryogenic free space, which suppresses thermal effects sufficiently to make the measurement backaction the dominant decoherence mechanism. With an efficient quantum measurement, we exert quantum control over the dynamics of the particle. We cool its center-of-mass motion by measurement-based feedback to an average occupancy of 0.65 motional quanta, corresponding to a state purity of 43%. The absence of an optical resonator and its bandwidth limitations holds promise to transfer the full quantum control available for electromagnetic fields to a mechanical system. Together with the fact that the optical trapping potential is highly controllable, our experimental platform offers a route to investigating quantum mechanics at macroscopic scales.

The need for single-camera 3D particle tracking methods is growing, among others, due to the increasing focus in biomedical research often relying on single-plane microscopy imaging. Defocusing-based methods are ideal for a wide-spread use as they rely on basic microscopy imaging rather than requiring additional non-standard optics. However, a wide-spread use has been limited by the lack of accessible and easy-to-use software. DefocusTracker is an open-source toolbox based on the universal principles of General Defocusing Particle Tracking (GDPT) relying solely on a reference look-up table and image recognition to connect a particle's image and its respective out-of-plane depth coordinate. The toolbox is built in a modular fashion, allowing for easy addition of new image recognition methods, while maintaining the same workflow and external user interface. Dissipation dilution enables extremely low linear loss in stressed, high-aspect ratio nanomechanical resonators, such as strings or membranes. Here, we report on the observation and theoretical modelling of nonlinear dissipation in such structures. We introduce an analytical model based on von K\'arm\'an theory, which can be numerically evaluated using finite-element models for arbitrary geometries. We use this approach to predict nonlinear loss and (Duffing) frequency shift in ultracoherent phononic membrane resonators. A set of systematic measurements with silicon nitride membranes shows good agreement with the model for low-order soft-clamped modes. Our analysis also reveals quantitative connections between these nonlinearities and dissipation dilution. This is of interest for future device design, and can provide important insight when diagnosing the performance of dissipation dilution in an experimental setting.

Computing the matching statistics of patterns with respect to a text is a fundamental task in bioinformatics, but a formidable one when the text is a highly compressed genomic database. Bannai et al. gave an efficient solution for this case, which Rossi et al. recently implemented, but it uses two passes over the patterns and buffers a pointer for each character during the first pass. In this paper, we simplify their solution and make it streaming, at the cost of slowing it down slightly. This means that, first, we can compute the matching statistics of several long patterns (such as whole human chromosomes) in parallel while still using a reasonable amount of RAM; second, we can compute matching statistics online with low latency and thus quickly recognize when a pattern becomes incompressible relative to the database., Comment: Our code is available at https://github.com/koeppl/phoni

A technique devised some years ago permits to study a theory in a regime of strong perturbations. This translates into a gradient expansion that, at the leading order, can recover the BKL solution in general relativity. We solve exactly the leading order Einstein equations in a spherical symmetric case, assuming a Schwarzschild metric under the effect of a time-dependent perturbation, and we show that the 4-velocity in such a case is multiplied by an exponential warp factor when the perturbation is properly applied. Acoustically actuated sessile bubbles can be used as a tool to manipulate microparticles, vesicles and cells. In this work, using acoustically actuated sessile semi-cylindrical microbubbles, we demonstrate experimentally that finite-sized microparticles undergo size-sensitive migration and trapping towards specific spatial positions in three dimensions with high reproducibility. The particle trajectories are successfully reproduced by passive advection of the particles in a steady three-dimensional streaming flow field augmented with volume exclusion from the confining boundaries. For different particle sizes, this volume exclusion mechanism leads to three regimes of qualitatively different migratory behavior, suggesting applications for separating, trapping, and sorting of particles in three dimensions., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

The binary neutron star coalescence GW170817 was observed by gravitational wave detectors during the inspiral phase but sensitivity in the 1-5 kHz band was insufficient to observe the expected nuclear matter signature of the merger itself, and the process of black hole formation. This provides strong motivation for improving 1--5 kHz sensitivity which is currently limited by photon shot noise. Resonant enhancement by signal recycling normally improves the signal to noise ratio at the expense of bandwidth. The concept of optomechanical white light signal recycling (WLSR) has been proposed, but all schemes to date have been reliant on the development of suitable ultra-low mechanical loss components. Here for the first time we show demonstrated optomechanical resonator structures that meet the loss requirements for a WLSR interferometer with strain sensitivity below 10$^{-24}$ Hz$^{-1/2}$ at a few kHz. Experimental data for two resonators are combined with analytic models of 4km interferometers similar to LIGO, to demonstrate sensitivity enhancement across a much broader band of neutron star coalescence frequencies than dual-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson detectors of the same length. One candidate resonator is a silicon nitride membrane acoustically isolated from the environment by a phononic crystal. The other is a single-crystal quartz lens that supports bulk acoustic longitudinal waves. Optical power requirements could prefer the membrane resonator, although the bulk acoustic wave resonator gives somewhat better thermal noise performance. Both could be implemented as add-on components to existing detectors.

Prefix-free parsing (PFP) was introduced by Boucher et al. (2019) as a preprocessing step to ease the computation of Burrows-Wheeler Transforms (BWTs) of genomic databases. Given a string $S$, it produces a dictionary $D$ and a parse $P$ of overlapping phrases such that $\mathrm{BWT} (S)$ can be computed from $D$ and $P$ in time and workspace bounded in terms of their combined size $|\mathrm{PFP} (S)|$. In practice $D$ and $P$ are significantly smaller than $S$ and computing $\mathrm{BWT} (S)$ from them is more efficient than computing it from $S$ directly, at least when $S$ consists of genomes from individuals of the same species. In this paper, we consider $\mathrm{PFP} (S)$ as a {\em data structure} and show how it can be augmented to support the following queries quickly, still in $O (|\mathrm{PFP} (S)|)$ space: longest common extension (LCE), suffix array (SA), longest common prefix (LCP) and BWT. Lastly, we provide experimental evidence that the PFP data structure can be efficiently constructed for very large repetitive datasets: it takes one hour and 54 GB peak memory for $1000$ variants of human chromosome 19, initially occupying roughly 56 GB.

A basic problem in metagenomics is to assign a sequenced read to the correct species in the reference collection. In typical applications in genomic epidemiology and viral metagenomics the reference collection consists of set of species with each species represented by its highly similar strains. It has been recently shown that accurate read assignment can be achieved with $k$-mer hashing-based pseudoalignment: A read is assigned to species A if each of its $k$-mer hits to reference collection is located only on strains of A. We study the underlying primitives required in pseudoalignment and related tasks. We propose three space-efficient solutions building upon the document listing with frequencies problem. All the solutions use an $r$-index (Gagie et al., SODA 2018) as an underlying index structure for the text obtained as concatenation of the set of species, as well as for each species. Given $t$ species whose concatenation length is $n$, and whose Burrows-Wheeler transform contains $r$ runs, our first solution, based on a grammar-compressed document array with precomputed queries at non terminal symbols, reports the frequencies for the ${\tt ndoc}$ distinct documents in which the pattern of length $m$ occurs in ${\cal O}(m + \log(n){\tt ndoc}) $ time. Our second solution is also based on a grammar-compressed document array, but enhanced with bitvectors and reports the frequencies in ${\cal O}(m + ((t/w)\log n + \log(n/r)){\tt ndoc})$ time, over a machine with wordsize $w$. Our third solution, based on the interleaved LCP array, answers the same query in ${\cal O}(m + \log(n/r){\tt ndoc})$. We implemented our solutions and tested them on real-world and synthetic datasets. The results show that all the solutions are fast on highly-repetitive data, and the size overhead introduced by the indexes are comparable with the size of the $r$-index., Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

The information on a quantum process acquired through measurements plays a crucial role in the determination of its non-equilibrium thermodynamic properties. We report on the experimental inference of the stochastic entropy production rate for a continuously monitored mesoscopic quantum system. We consider an optomechanical system subjected to continuous displacement Gaussian measurements and characterise the entropy production rate of the individual trajectories followed by the system in its stochastic dynamics, employing a phase-space description in terms of the Wigner entropy. Owing to the specific regime of our experiment, we are able to single out the informational contribution to the entropy production arising from conditioning the state on the measurement outcomes. In this paper, we consider the problem of identifying patterns of interest in colored strings. A colored string is a string where each position is assigned one of a finite set of colors. Our task is to find substrings of the colored string that always occur followed by the same color at the same distance. The problem is motivated by applications in embedded systems verification, in particular, assertion mining. The goal there is to automatically find properties of the embedded system from the analysis of its simulation traces. We show that, in our setting, the number of patterns of interest is upper-bounded by $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$, where $n$ is the length of the string. We introduce a baseline algorithm, running in $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$ time, which identifies all patterns of interest satisfying certain minimality conditions, for all colors in the string. For the case where one is interested in patterns related to one color only, we also provide a second algorithm which runs in $\mathcal{O}(n^2\log n)$ time in the worst case but is faster than the baseline algorithm in practice. Both solutions use suffix trees, and the second algorithm also uses an appropriately defined priority queue, which allows us to reduce the number of computations. We performed an experimental evaluation of the proposed approaches over both synthetic and real-world datasets, and found that the second algorithm outperforms the first algorithm on all simulated data, while on the real-world data, the performance varies between a slight slowdown (on half of the datasets) and a speedup by a factor of up to 11., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, published in ACM Journal of Experimental Algorithmics. The increasing use of microfluidics in industrial, biomedical, and clinical applications requires a more and more precise control of the microfluidic flows and suspended particles or cells. This leads to higher demands in three-dimensional and automated particle tracking methods, e.g. for use in feedback-control systems. General defocusing particle tracking (GDPT) is a 3D particle tracking method based on defocused particle images which is easy to use and requires standard laboratory equipment. In this work, we describe in detail a fast and robust algorithm for performing GDPT, which is suitable for automatized and real-time applications. Its key feature is a fast, segmentation-free approach to identify particles and estimate their 3D position. This detection step is followed by a refinement and iteration step to improve accuracy and identification of overlapping particles. We show that the algorithm is versatile and can be applied to different types of images (darkfield and brightfield). We use synthetic image sets of varying particle concentration to evaluate the performance of the algorithm in terms of detected depth coordinate uncertainty, particle detection rate, and processing time. The algorithm is applied and validated on experimental images showing that it is robust towards background or illumination fluctuations. Finally, to test the algorithm on real-time applications, we use synthetic images to set up a simulation framework with experimentally-relevant parameters and where the true particle positions are known., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

General Defocusing Particle Tracking (GDPT) is a single-camera, three-dimensional particle tracking method that determines the particle depth positions from the defocusing patterns of the corresponding particle images. GDPT relies on a reference set of experimental particle images which is used to predict the depth position of measured particle images of similar shape. While several implementations of the method are possible, its accuracy is ultimately limited by some intrinsic properties of the acquired data, such as the signal-to-noise ratio, the particle concentration, as well as the characteristics of the defocusing patterns. GDPT has been applied in different fields by different research groups, however, a deeper description and analysis of the method fundamentals has hitherto not been available. In this work, we first identity the fundamental elements that characterize a GDPT measurement. Afterwards, we present a standardized framework based on synthetic images to assess the performance of GDPT implementations in terms of measurement uncertainty and relative number of measured particles. Finally, we provide guidelines to assess the uncertainty of experimental GDPT measurements, where true values are not accessible and additional image aberrations can lead to bias errors. The data were processed using DefocusTracker, an open-source GDPT software. The datasets were created using the synthetic image generator MicroSIG and have been shared in a freely-accessible repository.

Many applications of quantum information processing (QIP) require distribution of quantum states in networks, both within and between distant nodes. Optical quantum states are uniquely suited for this purpose, as they propagate with ultralow attenuation and are resilient to ubiquitous thermal noise. Mechanical systems are then envisioned as versatile interfaces between photons and a variety of solid-state QIP platforms. Here, we demonstrate a key step towards this vision, and generate entanglement between two propagating optical modes, by coupling them to the same, cryogenic mechanical system. The entanglement persists at room temperature, where we verify the inseparability of the bipartite state and fully characterize its logarithmic negativity by homodyne tomography. We detect, without any corrections, correlations corresponding to a logarithmic negativity of $E_\mathrm{N}=0.35$. Combined with quantum interfaces between mechanical systems and solid-state qubit processors already available or under development, this paves the way for mechanical systems enabling long-distance quantum information networking over optical fiber networks., Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures

Liquid flow in sessile evaporating droplets of ultrapure water typically results from two main contributions: a capillary flow pushing the liquid towards the contact line from the bulk and a thermal Marangoni flow pulling the drop free surface towards the summit. Current analytical and numerical models are in good qualitative agreement with experimental observations however they overestimate the interfacial velocity values by 2-3 orders of magnitude. This discrepancy is generally ascribed to contamination of the water samples with non-soluble surfactants, however an experimental confirmation of this assumption has not yet been provided. In this work, we show that a small "ionic contamination" can cause a significant effect in the flow pattern inside the droplet. To provide the proof, we compare the flow in evaporating droplets of ultrapure water with commercially available bottled water of different mineralization levels. Mineral waters are bottled at natural springs, are micro-biologically pure, and contain only traces of minerals (as well as traces of other possible contaminants), therefore one would expect a slower interfacial flow as the amount of "contaminants" increase. Surprisingly, our results show that the magnitude of the interfacial flow is practically the same for mineral waters with low content of minerals as that of ultrapure water. However, for waters with larger content of minerals, the interfacial flow tends to slow down due to the presence of ionic concentration gradients. Our results show a much more complex scenario than it has been typically suspected, and therefore a deeper and more comprehensive analysis of the huge differences between numerical models and experiments is necessary., Comment: 8 pages, 4 appendices included

Continuous weak measurement allows localizing open quantum systems in state space, and tracing out their quantum trajectory as they evolve in time. Efficient quantum measurement schemes have previously enabled recording quantum trajectories of microwave photon and qubit states. We apply these concepts to a macroscopic mechanical resonator, and follow the quantum trajectory of its motional state conditioned on a continuous optical measurement record. Starting with a thermal mixture, we eventually obtain coherent states of 78% purity--comparable to a displaced thermal state of occupation 0.14. We introduce a retrodictive measurement protocol to directly verify state purity along the trajectory, and furthermore observe state collapse and decoherence. This opens the door to measurement-based creation of advanced quantum states, and potential tests of gravitational decoherence models., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Quantum mechanics dictates that the precision of physical measurements must be subject to certain constraints. In the case of inteferometric displacement measurements, these restrictions impose a 'standard quantum limit' (SQL), which optimally balances the precision of a measurement with its unwanted backaction. To go beyond this limit, one must devise more sophisticated measurement techniques, which either 'evade' the backaction of the measurement, or achieve clever cancellation of the unwanted noise at the detector. In the half-century since the SQL was established, systems ranging from LIGO to ultracold atoms and nanomechanical devices have pushed displacement measurements towards this limit, and a variety of sub-SQL techniques have been tested in proof-of-principle experiments. However, to-date, no experimental system has successfully demonstrated an interferometric displacement measurement with sensitivity (including all relevant noise sources: thermal, backaction, and imprecision) below the SQL. Here, we exploit strong quantum correlations in an ultracoherent optomechanical system to demonstrate off-resonant force and displacement sensitivity reaching 1.5dB below the SQL. This achieves an outstanding goal in mechanical quantum sensing, and further enhances the prospects of using such devices for state-of-the-art force sensing applications., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Evaporating salty droplets are ubiquitous in nature, in our home and in the laboratory. Interestingly, the transport processes in such apparently simple systems differ strongly from evaporating "freshwater" droplets since convection is partly inverted due to Marangoni stresses. Such an effect has crucial consequences to the salt crystallization process and to the deposits left behind. In this work we show unprecedented measurements that, not only confirm clearly the patterns of the flow inversion, but also elucidate their impact on the distribution of non-volatile solutes. Contrary to what has been often reported in the literature, such a flow reversal does not prevent the formation of ring-shaped stains: particles accumulate at the contact line driven solely by the interfacial flow. We can therefore conclude that the classical "coffee-stain effect" is not the only mechanism that can generate ring-shaped stains in evaporating droplets.
