Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive review of both the theory and experimental successes of Quantum Chromodynamics, starting with its emergence as a well defined theory in 1972-73 and following developments and results up to the present day. Topics include a review of the earliest theoretical and experimental foundations; the fundamental constants of QCD; an introductory discussion of lattice QCD, the only known method for obtaining exact predictions from QCD; methods for approximating QCD, with special focus on effective field theories; QCD under extreme conditions; measurements and predictions of meson and baryon states; a special discussion of the structure of the nucleon; techniques for study of QCD at high energy, including treatment of jets and showers; measurements at colliders; weak decays and quark mixing; and a section on the future, which discusses new experimental facilities or upgrades currently funded. The paper is intended to provide a broad background for Ph.D. students and postdocs starting their career. Abstract

The interaction of decavanadate with the cationic organic dyes methylene blue (MB), toluidine blue (TB) and rhodamine B (RB) was explored. For that purpose, a novel decavanadate salt (2,3-ampH)6[V10O28]·4H2O (2,3-ampV10), where 2,3-ampH+ = 2-amino-3-methylpyridinium, and two salts with the organic dyes (MB)4[H2V10O28]·10.8H2O (MBV10) and (TB)4(H2V10O28)·10H2O (TBV10) were synthesized. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The salts 2,3-ampV10 and MBV10 were also characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, while TBV10 was isolated as an amorphous solid. The supramolecular features of MBV10 showed columns of MB cations connected to V10 through H-bond interactions that resulted in channels filled with water molecules. The absorption spectrum of MBV10 was studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the X3LYP/def2-TZVP level using the crystallographic data. The efficacy of 2,3-ampV10 to bleach MB solutions at pH 6.2–6.5 was outstanding, achieving nearly 90% discoloration in only 5 min, presenting moderate efficacy towards TB and quite negligible towards RB. Moreover, a metachromatic effect was observed in the TB solution at pH 3. The IR spectra of the isolated solids and the mass spectra of the supernatants suggest both adsorption and cation exchange as the main responsible processes for the bleaching of MB and TB solutions. Abstract

In this work, the study of the new ligand 3,3′-bis[N,N-bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)aminomethyl]-2,2′-dihydroxybiphenyl (L) is reported, where a central 2,2′-biphenol (BPH) fluorophore was functionalized at 3,3′-positions with two dipicolylamine (DPA) side arms as receptor units. Following the synthesis and full chemical–physical characterization, the acid–base and Zn2+-coordination abilities of L were investigated through a combination of potentiometric, UV-Vis, fluorescence, NMR, XRD and DFT measurements. The optical properties of the ligand turned out to be strongly dependent on the pH, being straightforwardly associated with the protonation state of the BPH moiety, whereas its peculiar design allowed to form stable mono and dinuclear Zn2+ complexes. In the latter species, the presence of two Zn2+ ions coordinatively unsaturated and placed at close distance to each other, prompted us to test their usefulness as metallo-receptors for two environmental pollutants of great relevance, ibuprofen and ketoprofen. Potentiometric and fluorescence investigations evidenced that these important non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are effectively coordinated by the metallo-receptors and, of relevance, both the stability and the fluorescence properties of the resulting ternary adducts are markedly affected by the different chemical architectures of the two substrates. This study aims at highlighting the promising perspectives arising from the use of polyamino phenolic ligands as chemosensors for H+/Zn2+ and other additional anionic targets in their metal-complexed forms. Abstract

We report the first extraction of the pion-nucleon multipoles near the production threshold for the $n\pi^+$ channel at relatively high momentum transfer ($Q^2$ up to 4.2 $\rm{GeV^2}$). The dominance of the s-wave transverse multipole ($E_{0+}$), expected in this region, allowed us to access the generalized form factor $G_1$ within the light-cone sum rule (LCSR) framework as well as the axial form factor $G_A$. The data analyzed in this work were collected by the nearly $4\pi$ CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using a 5.754 $\rm{GeV}$ electron beam on a proton target. The differential cross section and the $\pi-N$-multipole $E_{0+}/G_D$ were measured using two different methods, the LCSR and a direct multipole fit. 22. Highly stable CsPbBr3 perovskite phases from new lead β-diketonate glyme adducts.

Abstract

Lead is one of the key metals of the all-inorganic lead halide perovskites. This work tailors novel architectures of lead's coordination sphere using a β-diketone (H-hfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione) and a glyme (monoglyme, diglyme, triglyme, or tetraglyme) ligand. The coordination chemistry and thermal behaviour of these "Pb(hfa)2·glyme" adducts have been analysed through FT-IR spectroscopy, 1H and 13C NMR analyses, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies provide evidence of the formation of a monomeric Pb(hfa)2·monoglyme structure. In order to validate the potentiality of these "Pb(hfa)2·glyme" precursors for the fabrication of Pb-based halide perovskites, a facile, one-step and low-temperature solution approach has been applied to prepare CsPbBr3 microcrystals with a process carried out in air under atmospheric pressure. Pure stoichiometric CsPbBr3 powders, obtained using Cs(hfa) and Br2 as cesium and bromide sources, respectively, show excellent stability under atmospheric conditions. Better results are obtained in terms of yield and stability from the diglyme and tetraglyme lead adducts. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) indicates a good uniform morphology of cubic grains, while the structure and the 1 : 1 : 3 stoichiometry of Cs : Pb : Br are confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), respectively. Tauc plots derived from absorption spectroscopy point to optical energy band-gaps (Eg) in the 2.21–2.27 eV range, in agreement with literature data. The present research elucidates the potential of these novel "Pb(hfa)2·glyme" adducts as promising lead precursors for CsPbBr3 perovskite synthesis, paving the way for their implementation in various technological applications. Abstract

The CLAS collaboration in Hall B at the Thomas Jeffeson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) has a broad scientific program. Recent results on the main topics are presented. These concern the electromagnetic exitation of nucleon resonances, the measurement of inclusive spin structrure functions in the nucleon resonance region, the first signature of the Generalized Parton Distributions through the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering measurement and the deuteron photodisintegration and photoproduction of light vector mesons., Comment: LaTex, 11 pages, 11 figures. 26. Deuteron Photodisintegration in the Quark-Hadron Picture

Abstract

The study of the two-body photodisintegration of the deuteron in the few GeV region is the ideal reaction to clarify the transition from the nucleonic degrees of freedom to the QCD picture of hadrons. The CLAS large angle spectrometer of Hall B at Jlab allowed for the first time the complete measurement of the angular distribution of the differential cross section at photon energy between 0.5 and 3 GeV. Preliminary results of the E93-017 experiment from the analysis of the 30% of the total statistic accumulated show persistent forward-backward asymmetry and are well described by the recent calculation of the deuteron photodisintegration cross section derived in the framework of the Quark Gluon String Model., Comment: LaTeX, 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The design of new pharmaceutical solids with improved physical and chemical properties can be reached through in-detail knowledge of the noncovalent intermolecular interactions between the molecules in the context of crystal packing. Although crystallization from solutions is well-known for obtaining new solids, the effect of some variables on crystallization is not yet thoroughly understood. Among these variables, solvents are noteworthy. In this context, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of ethanol (EtOH), acetonitrile (MeCN), and acetone (ACTN) on obtaining irbesartan (IBS) crystal forms with 2,3-dibromosuccinic acid. Crystal structures were solved by single-crystal diffraction, and the intermolecular interactions were analyzed using the Hirshfeld surfaces analysis. The characterization of physicochemical properties was carried out by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal analysis, and solution-state NMR techniques. Two different IBS salts were obtained, one from MeCN and ACTN (compound 1) and a different one from EtOH (compound 2). The experimental results were in agreement with the findings obtained through quantum mechanics continuum solvation models. Compound 1 crystallized as a monoclinic system P21/c, whereas compound 2 in a triclinic system P1̅. In both structures, a net of strong hydrogen bonds is present, and their existence was confirmed by the FT-IR results. In addition, the IBS cation acts as a H-bond donor through the N1 and N6 nitrogen atoms which interact with the bromide anion and the water molecule O1W in compound 1. Meanwhile, N1 and N6 nitrogen atoms interact with the oxygen atoms provided by two symmetry-related 2,3-dibromo succinate anions in compound 2. Solution-state NMR data agreed with the protonation of the imidazolone ring in the crystal structure of compound 1. Both salts presented a different thermal behavior not only in melting temperature but also in thermal stability.

Abstract

High-efficacy disease-modifying therapies have been proven to slow disability accrual in adults with relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis. However, their impact on disability worsening in paediatric-onset multiple sclerosis, particularly during the early phases, is not well understood. We evaluated how high-efficacy therapies influence transitions across five disability states, ranging from minimal disability to gait impairment and secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, in people with paediatric-onset multiple sclerosis.

30. On the defect of an analytic disc

Abstract

Although the concept of defect of an analytic disc attached to a generic manifold of $\C^{n}$ seems to play a merely technical role, it turns out to be a rather deep and fruitful notion for the extendability of CR functions defined on the manifold. In this paper we give a new geometric description of defect, drawing attention to the behaviour of the interior points of the disc by infinitesimal perturbations. For hypersurfaces a stronger result holds because these perturbations describe a complex vector space of $\C^{n}$. For a big analytic disc the defect does not need to be smaller than the codimension of the manifold. Indeed we show by an example that it can be arbitrarily large independently of the codimension of the manifold. Nevertheless we also prove that the defect is always finite. In the case of a hypersurface we give a geometric upper bound for the defect.

Abstract

Human neutrophil elastase (HNE) plays an essential role in host defense against bacteria but is also involved in several respiratory diseases. Recent reports suggest that compounds exhibiting a combination of HNE inhibitory activity with antiradical properties may be therapeutically beneficial for the treatment of respiratory diseases involving inflammation and oxidative stress. We report here the synthesis and biological evaluation of novel ebselen analogues exhibiting HNE inhibitory and antiradical activities. HNE inhibition was evaluated in an enzymatic system using human HNE, whereas antiradical activity was evaluated in a cell-based assay system using phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)-stimulated murine bone marrow leukocytes as the source of reactive oxygen species (ROS). HNE inhibition was due to the N–CO group targeting Ser195-OH at position 2 of the scaffold, while antiradical activity was due to the presence of the selenium atom. The most active compounds 4d, 4f, and 4jexhibited a good balance between anti-HNE (IC50= 0.9–1.4 μM) and antiradical activity (IC50= 0.05–0.7 μM). Additionally, the solid-state structure of 4dwas determined and compared to that of the similar compound N-propionyl-1,2-benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-one.

Abstract

Gene expression manipulation of specific metabolic pathways can be used to obtain bioaccumulation of valuable molecules and desired quality traits in plants. A single-gene approach to impact different traits would be greatly desirable in agrospace applications, where several aspects of plant physiology can be affected, influencing growth. In this work, MicroTom hairy root cultures expressing a MYB-like transcription factor that regulates the biosynthesis of anthocyanins in Petunia hybrida (PhAN4), were considered as a testbed for bio-fortified tomato whole plants aimed at agrospace applications. Ectopic expression of PhAN4 promoted biosynthesis of anthocyanins, allowing to profile 5 major derivatives of delphinidin and petunidin together with pelargonidin and malvidin-based anthocyanins, unusual in tomato. Consistent with PhAN4 features, transcriptomic profiling indicated upregulation of genes correlated to anthocyanin biosynthesis. Interestingly, a transcriptome reprogramming oriented to positive regulation of cell response to biotic, abiotic, and redox stimuli was evidenced. PhAN4 hairy root cultures showed the significant capability to counteract reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and protein misfolding upon high-dose gamma irradiation, which is among the most potent pro-oxidant stress that can be encountered in space. These results may have significance in the engineering of whole tomato plants that can benefit space agriculture.
